Anthrax guitarist Scott Ian is one of the true godfathers of thrash metal. While Metallica, Megadeth and Slayer represented the West Coast…Anthrax was the band that brought the East Coast attitude to the genre. But, at Scott's core, he is a true rock n roll fan…and it's the love of bands like KISS, AC/DC, Thin Lizzy and more that's reflected in his other band, Motor Sister. Alongside his wife Pearl Aday, singer/guitarist Jim Wilson (Mother Superior), bassist Joey Vera (Armored Saint) and drummer John Tempesta (White Zombie/The Cult), Motor Sister has just released the big riff rock and roll album of the year, “Get Off”…and we caught up with Scott as Motor Sister gears up to play the Welcome To Rockville festival!!
Scott Ian and Pearl Aday drop into Kyle Meredith With… to talk about the latest album from Motor Sister, Get Off. The pair talk about how they decided to take the band much further than just a tribute act to Mother Superior, playing in a different style compared to Anthrax, recording an homage to KISS with the song “Time's Up,” while and the mystery artists set in Aday's sights in the song “Come for You.” The interview also has a cameo from the husband-and-wife duo's son, Revel, who talks about his band Honeybee and their new single “Get Out of My Head." Ian also gives us an update on Anthrax's next album and upcoming tour with Black Label Society to celebrate their 40th anniversary (tickets for which are available here). Listen to Scott Ian and Pearl Aday discuss Motor Sister's Get Off, their stylistic influences, and more now, or via Consequence. Then, make sure to like and subscribe to Kyle Meredith With… wherever you get your podcasts, and you can also follow the Consequence Podcast Network for updates on all our shows. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

This week on the podcast, we had the pleasure to chat with Anthrax' Scott Ian along with Pearl Aday to talk about their band Motor Sister and the release of their latest album 'Get Off' comes out May 6 on Metal Blade Records. #Anthrax #MotorSister #ScottIan
Bass player par excellence Joey Vera is on hand to discuss his career, bass playing and the new album for 2022 from Motor Sister, titled Get Off. Motor Sister is a supergroup comprised of vocalist/guitarist Jim Wilson (Mother Superior/ Rollins Band), guitarist Scott Ian (Anthrax), drummer John Tempesta (White Zombie, The Cult) and vocalist Pearl Aday (daughter of Meat Loaf).

On this episode of The Fred Minnick Show, Scott Ian of the seminal thrash-metal band Anthrax takes time to chat with Fred. The band's co-founder and rhythm guitar player, Ian also is an author and spoken-word story teller. He also was a host on the VH1 show Rock Show for 48 episodes, interviewing rock greats such as Ozzy Osbourne, Ted Nugent and Tenacious D. When he and Fred get together, topics range from his first taste of whiskey (it didn't go well) to warning labels on music in the 1980s and '90s to a strange, private jet journey with Tommy Lee of Motley Crue. Naturally, whiskey is shared and discussed along the way. Whiskeys tasted: Maker's Mark 101 (7:14) Spirits of French Lick Unpretentious High Rye Bourbon Finished in Port Casks (17:54) Angel's Envy Finished in Tawny Port Casks (24:15) Barrell Bourbon Finished in Pear Brandy Barrels (42:14) Barrell Bourbon Armida finished in Pear Brandy, Jamaican Rum, and Sicilian Amaro Casks (52:18) Michter's Small Batch (1:00:39) Distillery 291 Whiskey (1:04:16) EPISODE SUMMARY Fred and Scott cover a number of topics, such as: Scott's first whiskey ever was a Jack and Coke with Lemmy Kilmister from Motorhead. He saw Lemmy in a pub in London, offered to buy him a drink and Lemmy steered him toward the whiskey mixer. The story didn't necessarily end well. He later began to drink whiskey more regularly with Dimebag Darrell of Pantera. Fred shares the story of how Brown-Forman came to create the Woodford Reserve brand of bourbon. Scott loves the Spirits of French Lick Unpretentious and is surprised to learn that it sells for up to $1,000 on the secondary whiskey market. In fact, the whiskey got popular with bourbon lovers even before Fred knew about it. While tasting the Angel's Envy Port Barrel finished whiskey, Fred talks about it being a "creative" whiskey, noting the distillery started aging in port barrels around 2013 that, at the time, was pushing the boundaries of whiskey-making. He notes that as recently as 2010, the finished whiskey market didn't really exist. "I think Angel's Envy deserves a lot of credit for everything that they have done to kind of propel the category," he says. That said, Fred doesn't believe such finished whiskeys should be called "bourbon." Fred also talks with Scott about Mexican whiskey and how the products continue to evolve. Of course, we all know Fred is a big tequila and mezcal fan, and Mexico is where those spirits truly begins. Scott's wife Pearl Aday makes a surprise appearance and they discuss the duo's acoustic performance at Fred's virtual Repeal Day Expo back in December. Scott likens Fred's preference for straight bourbon to his own liking of black coffee. "I want to taste the bean ... Same with whiskey. I wanted to taste IT." Fred again shares his disdain for vodka, a fact Scott already knew from following Fred's work. "The reason why, it's not because that the spirit truly genuinely in my heart sucks, it's because of the business behind vodka, and the history behind vodka and what it did to bourbon in the 1960s, taking it off the shelf." He also hates that vodka distillers are paying for placement in liquor stores and that distributors often require retail outlets to buy vodka products in order to procure allocated bourbons. "There's not a vodka magazine. You don't see vodka groups. It's an intoxicant and that's it. ... I would probably drink vodka over prisoner toilet wine, but that's about it." The conversation leads to Scott's experiences as a teen-ager getting ripped on vodka and telling his mom he had "the flu." He was hung over for four days with fevers, chills, no appetite ... now THAT'S a hangover. As a result, he stayed sober through the early years of Anthrax. When tasting the Barrell Bourbon Armida, both agree it's unique but not necessarily one they want to drink often - or more than one. Both felt the pear brandy casks were too...
We first met Pearl Aday at a dinner party at W.Earl Brown's house several years ago. Ward Davis and I were on the road and did the Conan O’Brien show and ended up having dinner with Pearl and her husband Scott and song swapping. Since then we’ve toured together and our families have become friends. Pearl has a cool story and we are glad she took the time with us for a couple in with Cody Jinks.
This episode is obviously rooted firmly in our Should Have Been category. Mother Superior may be the most obscure band that we’ve covered on a “Grave Mistakes…” episode yet. They may be recognized for their name from a Rollins Band or Motor Sister perspective, but their full discography as Mother Superior has been lost on most and needs some love! We hope we turn you on to this amazing rock n’ roll force!Songs this week include:“Can You Hear Me?” from Heavy Soul Experience Of Mother Superior (1996)“Got A Thing About Yout” from Kaleidoscope (1997)“Cool Cool Breeze” from Mother Superior (2001)“Strange Change” from Sin (2002)“Fuel The Fire” from 13 Violets (2004)“This Song Reminds Me Of You” from Moanin’ (2005)“Left For Dead” from Three Headed Dog (2007)“Beg Borrow Steal” from Grande (2008)Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts!Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://twitter.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it!: https://www.redbubble.com/people/inobscuria/og-shopIf you’d like to check out Kevin’s band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/If you want to hear Robert and Kevin’s band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/
Pearl Aday is a Honey-throated and soulful, and possessing a compelling growl full of grit and strut when she lets loose. Pearl follows up her critically acclaimed 2010 debut with her new release “Heartbreak and Canyon Revelry,” ushering in a new dawn of California Country Rock. Joining forces with the venerable Jim Wilson, (longtime bassist for Daniel Lanois, Emmylou Harris, and leader of Motor Sister and Mother Superior), Pearl once again proves how she is every inch a rock chanteuse who seamlessly moves from vulnerable to guttural in one measure. “Heartbreak and Canyon Revelry,” produced by Jay Ruston, is the natural evolution from 2010’s “Little Immaculate White Fox,” which was cited as not only “a noble debut” but tapped as leaving “a huge impact on the music scene” with “new female rock icon” Pearl likened to Ann Wilson, KT Tunstall, and Shania Twain. The album takes its title from two central events in Pearl’s life: her move to Topanga Canyon with her husband Scott and the birth of their son, Revel, Young, now 5 years old. Of this sophomore release, Pearl adds, “There’s something incredibly cathartic for me in this record. Writing and performing my music has always been my therapy, my safe place. In fact, I never sleep better than I do after a show after I’ve been given the privilege of singing my guts out. I’ve come to realize that we are all in ‘this’ together – this world, this place in time – and if these songs give someone the feeling that they are heard, understood, not alone, I’m elated.”
In this episode we are joined by Jim Wilson of Motor Sister. The former leader of Mother Superior returns to the podcast to talk about Motor Sister’s second album, working with Scott Ian on the new music, the power that John Tempesta and Joey Vera bring to the band, working with Pearl Aday, Anthrax, future touring plans, the status of his new music with Phil Jones, having different outlets for different styles of music, working with Marc Ford, playing with Daniel Lanois, his The Vinyl Shelf radio show, vinyl collecting, and a ton more! We kick the show off with a great 90s track from Slick Lilly. Thanks for listening, and please share! #podcast #motorsister #allkillernofiller This episode is brought to you by DEB Concerts. Whiskey & Cigarettes Interview W/Pearl Aday by DJ Nik
It’s your ol’ pal, Marc Hershon, once again and I’ve got Epi72 of Succotash, the Comedy Podcast Podcast right here for you. I don't spend a whole lot of time jabberin’ because — as usual —I’m WAY behind getting the episodes out. And I have a healthy backlog of interviews from the 2nd Annual Podcast Festival from about 3 weeks ago now, which I can really only put these out one an episode AND still play clips from podcasts that were featured at PodFest. In addition, I’m now running into a pipeline problem in that the pipeline is filling up with content. Non-podfest content. Which is a good problem to have, but it means I’m going to interrupt the podfest interviews later this week and put out a show featuring two filmmaker friends of mine – Gabriel Diani and Etta Devine – because they just popped the top on a Kickstarter campaign for the new comedy feature film they putting together. It’s called Diani And Devine Meet The Apocalypse and so next episode that chat will be our centerpiece. After a bunch of clips are played, I have an interview with our Special Guest Shawn Merek. I got to know Shawn last year at the FIRST LA PodFest, when he was the producer for the PodCrash podcast with Chris Gore. He’s still producing for Chris but he’s also one of the guys helping to make all the shows go over at the Sideshow Network. Shawn popped into the Podcast Lab at the PodFest and we talked about him, his life as a producer and also where podcasting may be heading in the future. OTHER THAN CLIPS This episode, besides clips and the interview, we also have our Burst O' Durst with comedian Will Durst, a new song just in time for the upcoming holiday, A Stormtrooper for Halloween by John Anealio. John just released an EP with that song as the title track - one of four songs - that you can download for FREE at http://JohnAnealio.com (or you can also opt to kick John some dollars if you wish. WE did, but who are we to ask you for money?), and we also have a brand new Henderson's Pants commercial. TOP 10 MOST ACTIVE PODCASTS IN THE STITCHER TOP 100 COMEDY PODCAST LIST Exclusively from the Comedy Podcast Podcast, here's a list of the comedy podcasts that showed the most action - either up OR down the chart - from Stitcher's Top 100 Comedy Podcasts: 44. The Champs with Neal Brennan & Moshe Kasher +6048. The Artie Lange Show +1367. The Comedy Button +4468. The Dead Authors Podcast +11269. The Bone Zone +2289. The Dana Gould Hour -3294. Where’s My 40 Acres: Ratchet & Real +2395. Thrilling Adventure Hour -1397. Wits +1299. Kevin Pollak’s Chat Show +31 (Anyone have tips on how to get your Stitcher numbers up? Succotash is at 5859 this week. Which is up a thousand or so from last week, but still...) THE CLIPS Inverse DeliriumI like to think it’s a measure of this show's success that my supporting players are getting more airtime in Podcast Land than I am. Just this past week, Geoffrey Welchman over at the Inverse Delirium podcast tapped both my booth announcer Bill Heywatt AND the host of our Burst O’ Durst feature, comedian Will Durst, to provide their voices for a couple of characters in a sketch! Man SchoolJumping back a few weeks to the LA PodFest, we have a clip from Caleb Bacon’s Man School podcast which was done live at the Fest. You may remember that Caleb was the host of the Gentlemen’s Club podcast but hung up his bouncer’s dud for a professor’s hat when he debuted Man School. In this clip, we hear him with guest Chris Gore and Jason Smith, with kind of a sports/cosplay mashup chat going on. My Wife Hates MeTyson Saner - who continues to amaze me and delight you with his ability to send along multiple clips every week for this show - grabbed a clip from My Wife Hates Me with husband-and-wife comedians Rich Vos and Bonnie McFarlane, along with their guest (and past Succotash visitor) Andy Kindler. But we’re not done with Rich Vos yet. While at the LA PodFest, he hopped over and guested on… Road Stories with Murray ValerianoMurray was performing his podcaast live and I guess Rich Vos doesn’t just have it tough at home – he shared a couple of road horror stories from working gigs on the road… Story WorthyI ran into Christine Blackburn from the Story Worthy podcast in the Podcast Lab at the Festival. She hung out for a little bit – long enough to record an ID for the show but not a real interview. She had to run off to do her show, where one of the guest spinning a tale was Pearl Aday, who talked about meeting and bowling with Michael Jackson when she was just 10 years old. I Am IdiotI was trying to keep the clips on this episode reined in to just Podcast Festival shows, but there’s just too much going on. I like to celeberate when podcasts hit their Episode 100 but this time it’s a bittersweet hurrah. Our friends Howard, Keith and Ben in England, the brains behind the I Am Idiot podcast just dropped their centennial epi but, at the same time, they’ve announced it will be their LAST episode as well. Bummer. I swapped a couple of tweets with them and I found out that they had always planned to put in 100 shows and then move on to something else. So here’s a taste of the Final Idiot… Phil Hendrie's Hmm Mmmm with Bobby DooleyBack to the LA Podcast Festival, where Phil Hendrie was on hand with Phil Hendrie’s Hmm Mmmm with Bobby Dooley, one of the better known characters from Phil’s long running radio show. I’ve heard Phil as a guest on a couple of podcasts and, although he’s still doing some radio, he is embracing the podcast model. Here he is, as Bobby Dooley and her husband occasionally, along with his guest and Podcast Festival co-organizer Graham Elwood. The Science JerksTyson Saner found us a two-fer! One of the live shows at the PodFest was Stuff You Should Know with Josh Clark and Chuck Bryant. But they haven’t dropped their festival episode yet. They did sit down with Dave Ciaccio and Robert Chan, hosts of The Science Jerks podcast, for an interview in the Podcast Lab. Funny enough, I saw this interview going down about 6 feet away from where the Succotash table was set up. The guys talk about the theft of Einstein’s brain. Hope you don't mind that this show runs about an hour and a half with everything we've got going on. Once you've heard the clips, take some time out to go listen to these shows in their entirety. And, when you get done with that…don't forget to please pass the Succotash! — Marc Hershon
