This week we talk about songs and albums by artists that the artists themselves have tried to lock away and bury! This is the continuation of our series that explores what happened when bands that had success in the 80s attempted to follow trends and remain relevant in the 1990s. Listen in as we discuss the varying degrees to which this worked, or where we had to ask, “What were they thinking?”What's this InObscuria thing? Our podcast exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. This time around we are bringing you the most lost of the lost. The decade of the 90s was such a polarizing time for older bands that were still trying to remain relevant. Options for 80s hard rock and glam metal bands: get heavier, go alternative or grunge, go industrial, re-brand, or stay the course…Songs this week include:Freak Of Nature – “Enemy” from Gathering Of Freaks (1994)Winger – “Junkyard Dog (Tears On Stone)” from Pull (1993)Slaughter – “American Pie” from Revolution (1997)The Newlydeads – “Free Weapons” from The Newlydeads (1997)Scorpions – “Mysterious” from Eye II Eye (1999)Europe – “All Or Nothing” from Prisoners In Paradise (1991)Chris Gaines – “White Flag” from Garth Brooks in… The Life Of Chris Gaines (1999) Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts!Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://x.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it!: https://www.redbubble.com/people/InObscuria?asc=uIf you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/Check out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/If you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/

Richie Kotzen is a musician who has tried his hand at most things when it comes to his craft, having played in bands like Mr. Big, Poison, The Winery Dogs and Smith/Kotzen over an illustrious career, but it is in the solo realm that he has done perhaps his best and most intimate work.Being a person who knows what he wants and how to achieve it, Kotzen is more suited to the solo side of music where he is more in control of his musical output, down to playing most instruments himself and recording and producing his own work. The last sonic masterpiece to come from Kotzen is his latest solo album, Nomad, which will be unleashed on September 27. A collection of eight songs, Nomad sees Kotzen express his diverse techniques and influences, from hard rock to 70s infused soul and funk, jazz fusion to R&B. If you know the man and his music, you pretty much know what to expect - only better.HEAVY caught up with Kotzen recently to discuss Nomad and the process of making it."I feel good," he smiled when asked about the album. "I'm very happy with it. I'm happy with what I recorded, and I'm looking forward to sharing it. We're actually on tour right now, and we've been playing Cheap Shots and On The Table live, so that's been fun. I'm looking forward to getting it out there. I hope people are feeling it the same way I do."We ask if Kotzen is the type of person who finishes an album and puts it to bed, or if he overthinks the final result and comes up with differing ideas while waiting for it to be released."I put it to bed and move on," he affirmed. "I don't… what happens is I get to the point where I listen to it in the creative process, and it starts to resemble what it was I was hearing in my mind. Once the speakers are reproducing that accurately, I know I'm finished and I move on. Then what happens is typically I fall into a heavy depression, because there was a lot of stuff happening internally during the creative process that's very exciting and very rewarding, and then it's done. It's over. And then it's now what? For me, I've gotta go off and do other things, often times I have to do something outside of music, like just go somewhere on the property and start raking leaves or trimming a tree or something (laughs) and then wait until the next fire starts to get me inspired."In the full interview, Richie talks more about the creative process and other things to factor when completing an album. He outlined how he focuses on individual song compositions before considering the album as a whole and mentioned he was inspired by the vinyl album format and aimed to create a diverse mix of genres, including rock, seventies-infused soul and funk, jazz, and R&B. However, he clarified that he doesn't consciously aim to cover a wide range of genres, but rather allows his influences from childhood, such as Stevie Wonder, George Benson, Iron Maiden, and Black Sabbath, to shape his music.Richie discussed his approach to songwriting, emphasizing that he doesn't intentionally try to emulate other artists' styles. Instead, he waits for inspiration and then brings his ideas to life. He also shared his perspective on writer's block, viewing it as a sign that there's nothing meant to be written at that moment. Richie also revealed that he documents his song ideas in his phone, which currently contains 398 memos of him mumbling, singing, or playing guitar.Kotzen also discussed the process of creating music, explaining his approach to recording and producing his own music. He emphasized the importance of having a clear vision and skill set to execute ideas, and how this approach has worked for him throughout his career. He also highlighted the difference between creating music for personal satisfaction and for external expectations, noting that the latter can lead to complications and disappointment. He discussed his songwriting process, explaining that his ideas often come from different starting points, such as having a chorus or a melody. He shared an instance where a song practically wrote itself as he strummed the chords. We asked about the challenges of being critical of his own work as a producer, to which Richie responded that he is always his harshest critic. He emphasized the importance of knowing his instrument, his singing voice, well, which allows him to gauge the emotional authenticity of his songs plus heaps more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Finishing With A Bang According To BILLY SHEEHAN From MR. BIG

Interview by Kris PetersMr. Big have been captivating music lovers since their inception in 1988 with an irresistible blending of rock and blues music that is as infectious as it is beautiful to hear. After releasing their self-titled debut album in 1989, Mr. Big - (vocalist Eric Martin, guitarist Paul Gilbert and bassist Billy Sheehan) achieved universal breakthrough success with the follow-up Lean Into It, an album that spawned the smash single To Be With You that set Mr. Big on a collision course with destiny that has continued unabated ever since.A combination of musical brilliance, integrity and genuine love for their craft has allowed Mr. Big to perform for over three decades, but, sadly, all good things must come to an end and for Mr. Big that ending is delivered in the form of The Big Finish touring extravaganza that has wound its way around the world at select destinations from last year, winding up - at this stage - in Romania on August 27.But in true Mr. Big style, the band was not content to leave their fans with only the memories of their final live performances, but also announced their tenth studio album - appropriately named Ten - would be unleashed with a strong nod to the entire history of the band in a musical farewell that promises an eternal gateway into the sonic sensibilities of a band who may never be rivalled. With the release of Ten rapidly approaching its global birth on July 12, HEAVY had the honour of sitting down for a one-on-one with founding member Billy Sheehan to talk about the album, Mr. Big's legacy and more."It's our 10th studio record," Sheehan proudly affirmed. "There have been a lot of other records. The first time we played in Japan, we had a wonderful time. And they knew we wouldn't be coming back until the next record - which was going to be a cycle that happens - so they wanted a live record. And we didn't really have the facilities because we were on tour with Rush in America, and so the sound man took a DAT tape, a digital audio tape that they don't have many more that cost $7.95, and put it in and hit record on our show with no multi-track, no fixes, no overdubs, no nothing. So our recording budget for the whole show was $7.95 (laughs). That tape became the first Raw Like Sushi. I think in Korea it's sold like 350,000 units. I don't know how many in Japan, but I hope we recouped our investment (laughs). But it was kind of cool that it was completely real and no fixes, no turning the audience up or any of those cheaters that you can do. So we've done a lot of records. And there's a million bootlegs, too. There was a great bootleg store in Japan - I think they're long gone now - selling CDs, and they had the most amazing set of bootlegs you could imagine. I got the Band of Gypsys, Jimi Hendrix demos and rehearsals. I got Genesis', The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway demos. It's the most amazing thing, the Montrose first record, all the demos, Boston demos that led up to these iconic records. And so we'd go there after our show, and they'd already have our record with artwork for sale (laughs)."We ask Sheehan to tell us more about Ten musically."We took a break on a tour and were able to go in and record," he explained. "I was super busy and couldn't make it for the writing sessions, so I came in and just played bass and that was kind of cool. I just could go, what do you got? Okay, maybe this will work and I would put a little bass line down. The songs were very together, but it was nice to be able to just come in and create a baseline that just came from nowhere, just from my first impression of how the song went. I didn't have a lot of time to even rehearse the songs. So in a way, that was kind of good, too, because it was spontaneous and came right, I didn't think it through. Thinking often… thinking will ruin a song pretty easily. And that happens with writing a lot. You just come up with a part and like it (but) the next day you think maybe we should hold on a second. Wait a minute. We had it. And now you're changing your mind? So that was a cool way to approach it. I just went in and played bass, and we came up with some cool stuff."In the full interview, Billy discussed a range of topics related to music production and performance. He talked more about Ten and its significance as their 10th studio record. Billy provided a detailed account of the recording process for the singles Good Luck Trying and Up On You, emphasizing the value of spontaneity and avoiding overthinking when creating music. The conversation also touched on the art of song arranging and hit songwriting techniques, exploring the concept of motifs, key changes, and song structures. We discussed the deliberate use of songwriting mechanisms to create hits and the intentional avoidance of radio-friendly song titles by bands like Led Zeppelin. Additionally, he explored the importance of live performances and spontaneity in music production, emphasizing the raw energy and genuine feel that it brings to recordings, plus heaps more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

We've covered a lot of great bands and artists in our podcasts, but it is a rare occasion when we get to explore a group that has defined an entire rock genre.  The Cure are considered to be the defining band within the goth rock movement.  Formed in 1978 out of the post-punk era, this West Sussex band would grow into an international cult favorite, complete with black wardrobe, smeared lipstick, and wild hair. The Cure is considered to have hit the height of their commercial appeal with Wish, their ninth stuio album.  Personnel for this album were Boris Williams on percussion (his last album appearance with the group), Perry Bamonte on guitars and keyboards (his first appearance as a member of the group), Pori Thompson on guitar (his last appearance with the group for 16 years), Simon Gallop on bass, and Robert Smith on vocals, keyboards, guitar, and bass.  The Cure would see a lot of personnel changes through the years, with Robert Smith being the only consistent member throughout, and the driving force behind the band.Wish was written with a lighter alternative rock sound than their previous albums, making many songs more accessible both to the less devoted fan and to commercial radio.  It went to number 2 on the Billboard 200 albums chart in the US, and number 1 on the UK albums chart.Bruce presents this monster of goth rock in today's podcast. A Letter to EliseThe third single from the album had its first release prior to the album on a 1991 episode of MTV Unplugged.  It is a song about resignation, of realizing that things are just not going to work out.  It went to number 2 on the US Alternate Airplay charts.HighOne of the more upbeat songs, this is the lead single from the album.  It went to number 1 on the US Modern Tracks, and 42 on the Billboard Hot 100.  It chronicles the feelings of love and infatuation.  Despite their reputation, many Cure songs are not dark and melancholy.  To Wish Impossible ThingsThis is a deeper track, and a darker one.  It is about relationships generally, and more specifically looking back on a relationship that is no more.  The title comes from the idea that selfish wishes do not turn out well when they are granted.Friday I'm In LoveThis was the band's second single and the big hit from the album.  It peaked at number 18 on the Billboard Hot 100 (the last top 40 hit for the Cure to date), and at number 1 on the Billboard Modern Tracks chart.  This surprisingly happy song about looking foward to Friday has become one of the signature songs from the group. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Yo Cousin Vinny by Joe PesciThe starring actor from "My Cousin Vinny" takes a comedic turn with this song inspired by the movie "My Cousin Vinny." STAFF PICKS:To Be With You by Mr. BigLynch starts off the staff picks with an acoustic rock ballad.  Front man and co-writer Eric Martin provides lead vocals to this song which topped the Billboard Hot 100.  It was a single off the album "Lean Into It," and is considerdd the groups most successful song to date. Black Flag by Kings XRob's staff pick is the lead single off Kings X's self-titled album, their fourth studio album, and the first on Atlantic Records.  Kings X has often been labeled as a Contemporary Christian album, but they have inspired a number of prog rock groups through the years.  Unlike many bands, the core lineup of the band has remained the same for over forty years. The End of Everything by The Charlatans UKWayne brings us a deeper cut from a group from the midlands in England.  This song's lyrics are inspired by a friend feigning an illness so he could leave the army.  The band appended the "UK" at the end of their name to avoid confusion with a 60's American band also called "the Charlatans."Until Your Love Comes Back Around by RTZBruce wraps up the staff picks with a ballad from a short-lived band out of Boston.  Former members of the band Boston, including guitarist Barry Goudreau and vocalist Brad Delp formed RTZ with keyboardist Mrian Maes, percussionist Dave Stefanelli, and bassist Tim Archibald.  This song went to number 26 on the US charts. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Elmira St. Boogie by Danny GattonThis instrumental gets us moving as we close out this week's podcast. In Which Murderer's Fifteenth episode of Season 6, the girls cover Mr. Big Murders. Not the character from 'Sex and the City'. Or the chocolate bar. Holly starts us off with the story of Dax Mack (cool name points) before Mel tells you all about the horrific crimes of Brett Peter Cowan.Shoutout to Mel for the suggestion! I guess. In this episode the girls talk why Mel keeps missing the microphone (hint, it involves stroking), how watching 'The Muppet Movie' is good for Holly, there is an impromptu hail storm in the middle of nowhere and Holly once again has an issue with Australia. Holly also wishes to make it clear Australian people are awesome and she loves your cute animals. But the spiders make her fear-vomit. Production, recording and post production completed by Holly has ordered Consulting Producer Craig a giant Kermit the Frog costume to wear while ‘not editing'. Holly edited this week. All complaints should be sent directly to Mel while Holly strokes her giant ‘stress frog's' head while dreaming of someone else editing the podcast. Episode # 197 Rock Bassist Billy Sheehan talks The Winery Dogs III Album, Songwriting, Tour, Yamaha Bass and more! While the all-out smokin' opening track and lead single “Xanadu,” title might evoke different imagery in more progressive-leaning listening circles, KOTZEN's zen-seeking, hard-rocking ruminations on “Xanadu” once again shine a light on the eternal power of good collaboration. “Coming out of the gates, that's a barnburner,” acknowledges PORTNOY. “It's one of the fiercest tracks on the album.” Incidentally, eagle ears will also delight in picking up on how definitively PORTNOY drops his drumsticks right as the song concludes. “At the end there, you're hearing me toss my sticks — not in frustration, but very much in satisfaction of what we had just done,” he clarifies with a laugh. From the clarion call for connection and societal understanding in “Mad World” to the door-opening personal realizations of “Breakthrough” to the undeniable muscle-flexing reign of the white-hot “Pharaoh” and the album-closing energy spillage of “The Red Wine,” all 50-plus minutes of III prove THE WINERY DOGS haven't lost a step when it comes to conjuring fresh hooks, gutbucket grooves, and bold harmonies. That said, it's been a long road back to the collective compound for guitarist/vocalist RICHIE KOTZEN, bassist/vocalist BILLY SHEEHAN, and drummer/vocalist MIKE PORTNOY. Back in 2015-16, they hit the road hard together to showcase their mettle as hardcore (you guessed it) road dogs in order to build upon the success of their well-received 2015 sophomore studio effort, HOT STREAK, by touring all across the globe. Eventually, the seasoned trio returned to their respective corners to focus on various other projects for the ensuing next few years. But when that live itch needed another scratching, these three working musicians knew just what they had to do. “We wanted to tour,” KOTZEN confirms succinctly of The Winery Dogs' 22-date run in early 2019 that was appropriately dubbed “Who Let The Dogs Out,” before adding, “We had to get those cylinders firing together once again.” Concurs PORTNOY, “That was a fun little tour that reignited our enthusiasm — and that's also when we knew a third album was definitely in the cards.” Adds SHEEHAN, “Getting back together like that was really refreshing. We could relax a bit and enjoy being together onstage, playing without any pressure. It was a beautiful thing.” Duly reinvigorated, THE WINERY DOGS were finally aligned to record again by initially ensconcing themselves together in KOTZEN's intimate, cozy home studio in Southern California to jam on new material that was mainly created in the moment during many hours of face-to-face musical interaction. Always the driven and intuitive songwriter, KOTZEN displays a definitive M.O. whenever he's working out new songs in the studio by scatting melodies and putting forth short bursts of semi-improvised lines and phrases that will soon enough transform into sharply honed subject matter. “My attitude is this: when I'm in the studio creating new music, the last thing on my mind is, ‘How am I gonna do it live?'” KOTZEN admits. “The reality is, I may never get to where I'll do it live. What's relevant is getting the vision that's in my head, in my heart, and in my soul to come out of the speakers. If it gets to the point where the tour is booked, the dates are confirmed, and we all get back in the rehearsal room together, that's when you figure out, ‘OK, how do I interpret this in a way it can be delivered live, and still be the same song?'” III is the follow-up to the band's critically acclaimed and Billboard-charting album, HOT STREAK, which was released October 2, 2015 on Loud & Proud Records via RED (a division of Sony Music Entertainment). After landing in the Top Five on many of Amazon's pre-order charts, including #1 on the Amazon BestSellers/Hard Rock chart and #1 on the Amazon Pre-Orders/Hard Rock Albums charts, it sold 30% more than their 2013 self-titled debut, landing them on various Billboard album charts including #2 on “Top Current Alternative Albums,” #5 on “Top Current Hard Music” and “Top Hard Music Albums,” #6 on “Top Current Rock Albums” and “Album Core / Genre Rock,” #15 “Top Current Physical Albums,” #16 “Top Current Albums,” and #30 on the “Top 200 Albums” chart.

Bass legend, Billy Sheehan is up first. We went back throughout his entire career, to his Talas years, joining David Lee Roth, to releasing a record last year. We talk about the late Phil Nero and his passing. "He was giving it 200%" Billy said about his vocal performance on the last album. Winery Dogs 3 is out now. Billy talks about playing with Richie Kotzen and Mike Portnoy. Apparently, Richie stopped using a pick while playing his guitar. That's a crazy story. What did he do during the lockdown? "I did tracks for people." He did over 600 tracks for bands and musicians from all over, and all styles of music.  He told some amusing stories about doing that for people. He gives an update on what's going on with Mr. Big. He said they have a drummer ready to go, but that person is currently doing other things, so they can't announce who it is just yet. Billy goes home every year for the Musicians of Buffalo Annual Christmas Concert. He told me what inspired that and what a joy it is to play. We talked about a collaboration he did with an Indonesian band called Dewa 19. Tyler Connolly from Theory of a Deadman gave me a great question - who's the best guitar player he's played with? Billy has shared the stage with legendary players. His answer? "That would be tough" On his time in David Lee Roth's band "We had a riot...what an adventure!" See Billy with the Winery Dogs at the Token Lounge on March 11th. Next, I had the chance to talk with Ricky Warwick from Black Star Riders about a lot of stuff. Their new album is called the Wrong Side Of Paradise. He tells me about the album and explained the album cover art. He laughed and said “We had a great band picture, but we didn't know who was going to be in the band”. He talks about Scott Gorham's semi-retirement, Christian Martuci leaving the band and going back to play with Corey Taylor, and new members of the band. He's been doing in-stores over in Europe. He tells me about that and how much he liked doing them. “For me, I love to meet people”. He talks about becoming sober. He said he doesn't want to harp, but “It works for me”. “I can't say enough good things about them” talking about the new record label, Earache records. He said it was time for a change for the new album. He also talks about the killer tour they'll be doing in Europe. Of course, I had to text my friend, producer Jay Ruston, to send me a question. He just sent me this….ask him about "too many wires". The Mr. Big tactic used in Canada continues to be controversial as many believe it often elicits false confessions from those targeted by this undercover method. The case of Sebastian Burns and Atif Rafay is no exception. There is evidence that supports both sides of the argument as authorities in Canada and the US investigate the brutal murders of three members of the Rafay family.Having been behind bars for almost two decades, Sebastian and Atif still claim their innocence. Were they wrongfully convicted? Were they manipulated into confessing to a crime they did not commit? Or did "Mr. Big" get it right? This episode of I Don't Get It is not for the faint of heart. First, Ashley, Lauren, and Naz are asking the tough questions. Do you tell a friend when they have bad breath? What about if they're just stinky, in general? Everyone feels a little differently about it, so Lauren and Ashley call in for backup, and their dad weighs in with his opinion. Jared also drops in to talk about having this exact experience at work. Even after all of that, no one can quite agree: is it rude or are you just doing the right thing by telling someone when they're walking around little stink lines radiating off of them like a Charlie Brown character? In the second half of this episode, Lauren's I Don't Get It about cursive turns into a much more vulnerable discussion about love letters. Ashley even shares a super personal one she wrote years ago. Talas, UFO, DLR, Steve Vai, The Winery Dogs, Sons Of Apollo, Mr. Big- The  Billy Sheehan#bassguitar #billysheehan #mrbig #stevevai Billy Sheehan has changed the way bass guitar is played. Rising to cult status in the 80's with his Buffalo, NY based band Talas, Billy was recruited by David Lee Roth when Roth left Van Halen in '85. He recorded two platinum selling albums with the former Van Halen front man before setting out on his own. Forming Mr. Big in 1989, the band achieved a Billboard #1 single in the US and 14 other countries with "To Be With You" from their 2nd Atlantic Records album release "Lean Into It". While developing his trademark style of playing he has performed over 4000 live gigs on every continent except Africa and Antarctica.Website: http://www.billysheehan.com/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/billysheehanonbass/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100044426979764Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/billy-sheehan-7b19136/Twitter: https://twitter.com/billyonbassThanks for tuning in, please be sure to click that subscribe button and give this a thumbs up!!Email: thevibesbroadcast@gmail.comInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/listen_to_the_vibes_/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thevibesbroadcastnetworkLinktree: https://linktr.ee/the_vibes_broadcastTikTok: https://vm.tiktok.com/ZMeuTVRv2/Twitter: https://twitter.com/TheVibesBrdcstTruth: https://truthsocial.com/@KoyoteAnd Now!!! This week is our 8th installment of, “Degrees Of Separation…” where we discuss the more obscure side projects and solo releases from some not-so-obscure artists. This week we pay homage to the rock n' roll rags to riches story that is the metal god-like voice that is Tim “Ripper” Owens. He inspired a major motion picture, not to mention gave opportunities to countless other singers from tribute bands to perhaps be considered as the replacement for the real deals. This guy has some of the most sought-after pipes of the last 25 years. All hear our warning; never turn your back on The Ripper!New to InObscuria? It's all about excavating obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal from one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. While we may be talking about bands that you know intimately in this episode, perhaps you are not aware of the depth of side projects they have had over their careers. Our hope is that we turn you on to something new!Songs this week include:Ripper - “Embattled” from Embattled - Single (2022)Winter's Bane - “Heart Of A Killer” from Heart Of A Killer (1993)Yngwie J. Malmsteen - “Damnation Game” from Perputual Flame (2008)Operation: Mindcrime - “Taking On The World (feat. In this episode Max discusses being sober & DJ'ng sober dance parties, & the begining of Knockout Productions.  A glimpse into former Oklahoma City venues, Doc Severinsen's off of North Meridian & a sold out show with Warrant. We also discuss the venue Rome 90 in Norman, Oklahoma with LA Guns, The Black Crowes, & Flotsam & Jetsam and the challenges that come along with doing shows in that venue. In the concert business, not every show is a success. Sometimes you hit a homerun, & sometimes you lose it all. There were 2 Pantera shows in Oklahoma in 1990, one in OKC at The Diamond Ballroom & one in Tulsa at the Cains & we talk about them both. During this time period, Bricktown OKC was dark & dangerous at night and the canal didn't exist but a club called Kinetics did and held shows by NIN, Pantera, LA Guns, & more. Lots of legendary shows through the end of 1991. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
