Ep. 286: Pulling The Plug… Acoustic Rock n' Punk n' Metal 4

This week we celebrate bands that can re-imagine their songs with acoustic instruments and still rock! We are pulling the plug… and gasping for air… guitars! Electric artists have been playing acoustically since the beginning of recorded music. Most songwriters start the process with an acoustic instrument and capturing the sound of a song on just wire and wood has a vulnerable, human feel to it. What's this InObscuria thing? We're a podcast that exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. This week we discuss the FORGOTTEN. Mtv started a series in 1989 called “unplugged”, and almost every mainstream relevant act started producing acoustic albums or versions of their songs. This week we listen to some artist that you may have never considered as having acoustic interpretations of their songs.Songs this week include:The Gems – “Like A Phoenix (Acoustic Version)” from Phoenix (2024)Cicadstone – “Burn Your Name (Acoustic)” from Future Echoes (Acoustic EP) (2024)Dokken – “In My Dreams” from One Live Night (1996) Rise Against – “Swing Life Away” from Punk Goes Acoustic (2003)Twelve Foot Ninja – “Kingdom (Acoustic)” from Mutant Dreams And Face Transplants: An Acoustic Experience (2024)Joey Eppard – “Dregs” from Joey Eppard Live In Concert (2013)Megadeth – “Symphony Of Destruction (Acoustic Live)” from Unplugged In Boston (Live 2001) (2001)Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts!Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://x.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it: InObscuria StoreCheck out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/If you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/If you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/

Dokken was formed in the late 1970s by vocalist Don Dokken. The band came into its own in the early ‘80s with the classic lineup of Don on vocals, George Lynch on guitar, Jeff Pilson on bass, and Mick Brown on drums. Their debut album, Breaking the Chains, released in 1981, didn't gain immediate traction but laid the foundation for what would become one of the more recognized names in melodic metal. The breakthrough came with Tooth and Nail in 1984, followed by Under Lock and Key and Back for the Attack. These albums produced a number of hits—songs like “Into the Fire,” “Just Got Lucky,” and “Alone Again”—which earned the band regular MTV rotation and a growing international fanbase. Don Dokken's vocals blended melody with grit, while George Lynch brought a technically aggressive and distinctive guitar style that played a major role in shaping their sound.By 1987, the band was touring with acts like Aerosmith and AC/DC and headlining their own arena shows. They also contributed the track “Dream Warriors” to the Nightmare on Elm Street 3 soundtrack, which gave them additional mainstream exposure. But with success came internal strain. The tension between Don Dokken and George Lynch was well-known and often spilled over into the band's creative process. The two had what could be described as a musical cold war, and while that friction helped define their sound, it also led to the band's breakup in 1989.Over the decades that followed, the band went through multiple lineup changes. Don remained the frontman and creative anchor. Since the early 2000s, guitarist Jon Levin has held the guitar spot, earning respect from fans for honoring the original material while also bringing his own energy to the band.In 2023, Dokken released a new album, Heaven Comes Down. The album stayed true to the band's identity while incorporating more modern production elements. The songwriting remained melodic and direct, and it was generally well-received by long-time listeners. Notably, three songs recorded during those sessions didn't make the final tracklist. Don has mentioned the possibility of releasing those as part of a future EP.There has also been increasing interest in the reconnection between Don and George Lynch. Though there's no formal reunion, George has appeared onstage with Don several times in recent years. The chemistry appears to be intact, and the two have expressed mutual respect in recent interviews. Whether this leads to a new song, a studio collaboration, or something more remains to be seen.Dokken continues to tour and record, and despite the changes and challenges over the years, the band remains active. Whether you've been following them since the ‘80s or just discovering them now, Dokken's music still resonates—and their story is still being written.

Known for his impressive work with bands like Dokken, Warlock and Doro, Jon Levin takes us on a journey through his musical career, sharing insights, stories, and his passion for creating authentic music. From a young age, Jon showed his musical talent by playing various instruments but it was the guitar that captivated him and ignited his passion for rock music. Inspired by guitar gods like Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix, Jon honed his skills and pushed himself to excel. Later on, he discovered the guitar mastery of Eddie Van Halen, with "Unchained" becoming his favorite Van Halen track. But it wasn't all smooth sailing for Jon. As he opens up about his challenges with reading comprehension, we gain a deeper understanding of the determination and resilience that define a true rock performer. Jon also shares his experiences collaborating with renowned artists such as Doro Pesch and her band, revealing his pride in Warlock's album and the impact they had on the metal scene. In a surprising turn of events, Jon reveals that he pursued a career in law during the grunge movement. However, music never truly left his soul. Even while in law school, he would occasionally strum his guitar, but it wasn't until he received a life-changing call from Jeff Pilson that his music career reignited. Discussing his time with Dokken, Jon shares the exhilarating story of how he joined the band. Reluctant at first, it was ultimately his father who convinced him to take the leap. Jon's talent shone through as he played two blazing guitar solos for Dokken without even hearing the tracks beforehand, proving that he had the chops to fill the shoes left by other guitarists. Throughout the episode, Jon shows immense admiration for Ed Van Halen, praising his brilliance and recounting a brief encounter with the guitar virtuoso when their bands shared a stage. He also takes us back to his early years, recalling the moment he made the pivotal decision to drop out of college against his parents' wishes and fully commit to a career in music. As we dive into the band's latest album, "Heaven Comes Down," Jon talks about the circumstances they faced during the COVID-19 pandemic. Unable to collaborate in person, the band relied on correspondence to create the record. Jon discusses his struggle with programming drums but overcame the challenge with the help of a friend, Tommy Henriksen. With the downtime, Jon began recording demos and found that writing in the early hours of the morning worked best. Jon explains how the album came together, with him sending Don demos and the lead singer improvising lyrics and melodies on the spot. Some songs were collaborations, while others had already been written, allowing the band to adapt and create despite the limitations imposed by the pandemic. Throughout the episode, Jon's passion for genuine music shines through, as he shares his thoughts on creating without ripping off or forcing ideas. He explains that on "Heaven Comes Down," they managed to accomplish this organically, creating a record filled with raw emotion and strong musicality. Don delves deeper into the creative process and discusses the band's approach to balancing new music with their iconic hits. They explore how the band's sound resonates with a modern audience and discuss the challenges and successes they encountered during the recording process. Looking ahead, Jon Levin reveals exciting plans for the future, with more music videos in the works and a tour scheduled for 2024, potentially including stops in Europe and Japan. Wes Craven didn't think Freddy Krueger could be a legitimate franchise character. And then the sequel basically printed money, and Wes thought it might be a good idea to jump back in the fray. This time, though, he and his co-writers returned back to the dream world, and Freddy comes for Nancy and a crew of new kids who discover, maybe, the path to destroy Freddy once and for all. No, the acting hasn't gotten any better, and no, the dialogue is still way too on the nose. But this is a real promising return to form for the franchise, and introduces a ton of new ideas for a great horror villain. When we watched the original Nightmare on Elm Street for the show, we were only in our 2nd season and were still relative horror newbies. But it's finally time to explore the entire Fred Krueger canon, and this week we start with a film that has no right to be as interesting and good as it is. The acting still isn't great, the dialogue is atrocious, and the producer made the entire process a nightmare for everyone involved. But the intentional undercurrents of homoeroticism coupled with a totally different take on Freddy's abilities makes this a fun but flawed entry in the canon.
