April 1989: The world was a strange mix of excess and transition. On one side, the neon-drenched MTV era was still riding high, with hair metal bands like Poison, Motley Crüe, and Def Leppard dominating the charts with their polished, radio-friendly anthems. Power ballads and arena rock were inescapable, and rock fans were tuned in to Bon Jovi and Guns N' Roses. Yet, beneath the surface, change was brewing. Bands like Jane's Addiction and Soundgarden were slowly carving out a new, grittier sound that would soon transform the entire landscape.Amid this backdrop, Blue Murder made their entrance—not as another Sunset Strip glam act, but as a hard-hitting supergroup led by a guitar hero who had already proven himself with Thin Lizzy and Whitesnake. John Sykes wasn't looking to jump on the hair metal bandwagon. Instead, with Blue Murder, he aimed to bring the technical brilliance of the '70s into the late '80s, blending his bluesy, virtuoso guitar work with heavy grooves and intricate song structures. Sykes, along with legendary drummer Carmine Appice and fretless bass wizard Tony Franklin, formed a trio that drew on the legacy of hard rock and metal titans, delivering something deeper and more ambitious than most of their glam metal contemporaries.Yet, for all their talent, Blue Murder wasn't about writing catchy three-minute radio singles. Their self-titled debut album was a blend of towering guitar riffs, thunderous drums, and epic song structures that leaned closer to the ‘70s hard rock tradition of Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple than the bubblegum metal that filled the charts. But in 1989, as hair metal ruled the airwaves and grunge was lurking around the corner, Blue Murder stood out—ambitious, raw, and musically masterful. The Road to Blue MurderJohn Sykes had already proven his chops with Whitesnake's 1987 album, a monster hit that spawned chart-topping singles and dominated MTV. But creative tensions with Whitesnake's leader, David Coverdale, led to Sykes' unceremonious departure just as the band was at the peak of its commercial success. Undeterred, Sykes began writing material for what would eventually become Blue Murder, determined to put together a powerhouse group that could rival his previous success. At first, Sykes wasn't planning to be the frontman. The band initially brought in some big-name vocalists to handle lead duties. Ray Gillen of Black Sabbath and Badlands fame was the first to join the lineup, contributing vocals to some early demos. But Gillen left after just a few months, reportedly due to creative differences. The next contender was Tony Martin, another former Black Sabbath singer, but he, too, didn't stick around for long. After several auditions and some disagreements with the label Geffen Records, the A&R team suggested that Sykes himself take over lead vocals. Despite being known more for his guitar work, Sykes stepped up, and his voice turned out to be a perfect match for the band's sound—gritty, soulful, and powerful. With legendary drummer Carmine Appice, who had played with the likes of Jeff Beck and Vanilla Fudge, and fretless bass virtuoso Tony Franklin, fresh off his stint with The Firm alongside Jimmy Page and Paul Rodgers, Blue Murder had a lineup that was nothing short of rock royalty. The result was a self-titled debut that combined technical brilliance with bluesy hard rock, reflecting Sykes' desire to channel the spirit of '70s heavyweights like Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple, rather than chasing the more formulaic sound of the late-'80s hair metal scene.Building the Sound: A Guitarist as a FrontmanFor a guy who wasn't originally a vocalist, Sykes delivered some serious vocal prowess on Blue Murder. He was filling big shoes, considering he had just played alongside David Coverdale, one of rock's great frontmen. And while the album isn't a complete departure from Whitesnake's bluesy, hard-hitting rock, it's more expansive, both musically and lyrically. The standout track, “Valley of the Kings,” showcases the epic grandeur Blue Murder was going for. Co-written by Black Sabbath's Tony Martin, the song combines powerful riffs, intricate solos, and a historical theme that was rare in the pop-metal scene of the time. This track had a “late '80s Sabbath” feel, blending hard rock with doom-like weight, something that set the band apart from the typical hair metal crowd.Tracks like “Jelly Roll” and “Out of Love” demonstrate the band's diversity—moving between blues-infused swagger and heartfelt ballads, all carried by Sykes' smooth yet powerful vocals and, of course, his signature guitar tone. The hosts also discussed how “Out of Love,” a lesser-known power ballad, was one of those hidden gems deserving far more attention than it ever received. The Legacy of Blue MurderThough the album charted respectably (peaking at #69 on the Billboard 200), it didn't make the impact that Whitesnake's 1987 album did. Part of the issue was the changing musical landscape. By 1989, the glam metal scene was beginning to saturate, and the introspective rawness of grunge was on the horizon. Blue Murder, with its complex musicianship and Sykes' ambitious songwriting, may have been too sophisticated for an audience that was more accustomed to quick-hit rock anthems. But for those in the know, Blue Murder became a cult classic. Its combination of blistering guitar work, thunderous drums, and intricate bass lines made it a musician's album—a performance record. For fans of technical prowess and intricate song structures, Blue Murder was a band worth rediscovering. What Could Have BeenDespite the talent and the potential, Blue Murder never achieved the commercial success many expected. Tensions with their label, Geffen Records, didn't help. Sykes believed Geffen was trying to sabotage the band in hopes he'd rejoin Whitesnake. Whether or not that's true, it's clear that Blue Murder didn't get the marketing push it deserved. After a follow-up album in 1993 (Nothing But Trouble), Blue Murder faded into the background, overshadowed by the grunge explosion. However, Sykes continued to be a respected figure in the hard rock and metal scenes, even though he never reached the heights of Whitesnake's success again.A Call to Revisit a Lost MasterpieceSo why does Blue Murder still resonate with those who know it? It's a record that transcends the pop-metal limitations of its time. If you're a fan of Thin Lizzy, Whitesnake, or just killer guitar work, this album is well worth revisiting. And for those who missed it the first time around, now's the perfect time to dive into one of the best-kept secrets of late '80s metal.Take a listen, let it transport you back to 1989, and then wonder how this gem flew under the radar.Songs in this Episode* Intro - Blue Murder * 22:17 - Black-Hearted Woman * 27:14 - Out of Love * 31:53 - Ptolemy * 37:59 - Billy * 39:04 - It's Too Late (demo w/ Ray Gillen on lead vocals) * Outro - Valley of the KingsMake Your Voice Heard! In our quest to explore the depths of 90s Rock, we rely on you, our listeners. Picture this. It's 1986. The Cold War is at a fever pitch. The whole world is locked into a conflict between the Forces of Freedom, and the Commies... at least that's how it felt to 80s kids. But the Cold War wasn't the only threat facing American society. Many feared that a much more sinister enemy lurking in the shadows: the devil himself. During the so-called satanic panic, parents worried that their kids would get caught by the Lord of Darkness, and rock - specifically heavy metal from notoriously debauched bands like Motley Crüe - was a big threat. What was an evangelical teen metal fan to do when the whole genre was tainted by Beelzebub? You fight fire with fire, and send Satan straight to hell with the legendary band Stryper. With insight from Stryper's Michael Sweet, and White Lion's Mike Tramp, music journalist Andrew Gill (Sound Opinions), and historian Leah Payne (God Gave Rock and Roll to You: a History of Contemporary Christian Music) follow the epic battle for the soul of Stryper, the undisputed kings of 1980s Christian Metal who wanted to fight Satan on his home turf - the raucous world of mainstream metal. Along the way, they found that the battle lines between demons and angels can get a bit blurry. How do you win the war when you aren't exactly sure who is friend or foe? Do you have a Christian rock story to tell? Hello everyone and welcome to another edition of Interviewing the Legends I'm your host Ray Shasho. With distortion cranked, synths warm, and no regard for the rules, Fastest Land Animal tap into the eternal power of three equally committed (and possibly crazed) kindred spirits. In this case, the trio— Screamin' Jack Novak aka John Cusimano, Alfonse Castillo [guitar, bass] aka Jonny Blaze and Shark Samuels [drums] aka Andrew Meskin crash land (at full speed) into the intersection of glorious gutter punk, revved-up rock ‘n' roll, and off-kilter pop. This slick, yet sharp style continues to captivate a growing fan base with nearly 10 million YouTube views and counting and acclaim from the likes of RIFF Magazine and more. However, they only amplify every aspect of their vision on their 2023 second full-length LP, East Coast, West Coast, In between. As the story goes, these old friends logged time in previous bands, performing alongside everyone from Motley Crüe to Alice Cooper. However, the musicians bared their teeth with their self-titled debut, Fastest Land Animal, in 2021. They rallied around influences as diverse as The Velvet Underground, David Bowie, Foo Fighters, Queens Of The Stone Age, Rage Against The Machine, and The Ramones in the cultivation of a singular vision. They parlayed this momentum into a prolific creative season despite the distance between them with Jack in New York, Alfonse in Arizona, and Shark in Texas. Beaming in Los Angeles-based producer Don Gilmore the group tracked East Coast, West Coast, In Between via ZOOM. This time around, they increased the presence of analog synths, leaned on Gilmore's impeccable tone selection, and even broke their own “no songs slower than 150BPM” rule. Please welcome singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist formerly of New York based Indie- rock group The Cringe who is also married to American chef and Television personality Rachel Ray …Screamin' Jack Novak aka John Cusimano of Fastest Land Animal who was born of a Jackal raised by his father, a nanny and two irascible rottweilers. My guest is Tod Waters, musician, visual artist, and rock n roll clothing designer whose work you can find under Junker Designs. His style is distressed and repurposed, reminding you of the steel and metal, and the grit of the streets here in Houston. Performers such as Motley Crüe, Poison, Johnny Depp, Robert Rodriguez, Britney Spears, Pink, Shakira, Christina Aguilera, Prince, Steven Tyler, and Alice Cooper have all added Junker Designs to their wardrobe, and you've seen it on screen in Alita Battle Angel, Sin City 2, Magic Mike, Fear the Walking Dead. We discuss his road to making clothes for the stars, what it's like switching from drawing to clothing to sculpture to film, and most importantly, we talk about how to get the work done and how to tap into that wonderful, mysterious nebula of ideas that we both believe is available anyone willing to show up and do the hard parts. For our landmark 150th episode, we bring you an episode that made Brett so giddy that he nearly piddled. That's right, folks, our Third Lad this week is none other than Phil Wilson from seminal UK indie pop band The June Brides. During their initial run from 1983 - 1986, The June Brides released some of the most beloved singles of the era and the chart-topping album There Are Eight Million Stories... Originally under the spell of Postcard bands like Orange Juice and Josef K, the Brides' unique blend of guitar pop with viola and trumpet has in turn been wildly influential from C86 to Britpop and beyond. High profile fans like Morrissey, Manic Street Preachers, and Belle & Sebastian's Stuart Murdoch have acknowledged The June Brides' impact. Following the band's breakup, Phil recorded material for Creation and Caff before leaving the music business behind in the late '80s. In the 21st century, The June Brides have returned for live gigs and recordings. Phil also released an acclaimed solo album for Slumberland in 2010, God Bless Jim Kennedy, as well as self releasing collections of home recordings. Because your humble hosts of Only Three Lads are Only Two Idiots, it was a late realization that we already covered this topic in Episode 131. Therefore, we present our first "Volume II" episode, where we take a previously covered topic and put a fresh spin on it with all new selections. What do you think? Should we add some more past topics back into the randomizer? As you would expect, we explore all kinds of dangerous diversions, dark alleyways and wabbit holes - Motley Crüe, Montrose, Andy Bell's "pendulum", a missed meeting with David Byrne, Coke mix-ups. As Gregg would say: it's on like Donkey Kong!
What up fellow rivetheads? This episode is the real episode #048. We fucked up and mislabeled the last episode as #048 but we were wrong and had to fix it. Anyway Metallica fucked around and dropped a brand new song and announced a new tour with Pantera...and all on a fucking Monday. Well we talk all about that. Death thrash rippers Schizophrenia has a new covers EP coming out which includes their takes on Slayer, Judas Priest, Morbid Angel and more. We also talk about that! John 5 taking over the guitar duties in Motley Crüe? Yup, we talk about that shit as well! Kanye West saying more weird shit...nah we definitely DON'T talk about that ... but we do discuss Venom releasing their debut album Welcome To Hell on this day in 1981! We still miss Slayer

This week, Mille Petrozza of thrash legends Kreator is our guest! We discuss his love of coffee and how Kreator got into the coffee game, what metal-branded coffee he would vouch for, what he always wants to achieve when writing a new album, the pandemic not being good for him creatively the way it was for many other bands, and why now was the time to write a song about the metal community. He also talks about how filmmaker Ari Aster influenced the music video for “Midnight Sun,” missing Nirvana at small clubs when they played in Germany years ago, how the European festival circuit killed a lot of competition, and the difficulties of living and maintaining a healthy lifestyle on tour. Petar and Sylvia discuss Motley Crüe's return to the stage, all the build up by the band prior to the show, the drama that happened immediately after the first show, and Herman Li from Dragonforce exalting the guitar virtuoso known as Kurt Cobain.

That my friends is impressive. He has done tours, but the music lifestyle of Hammond isn't anything like you might envision. It's clear that Ross did it his way. Might be the recipe for a young musician out there listening. In today's episode of Experience the Buzz, Host Steve Buzzard catches up with Hammond "Ross and I are friends through basketball, but I never have had the chance to know his story until today. His take on music and the life he has been able to live through it is fascinating." Our conversation hits three areas: SEGMENT 1

Robert shares stories about the process of this work as well as stories about a photoshoot with Brando, one with De Niro; and we take a look behind the scenes at a part of the world of entertainment most of us know nothing about. A heavy metal band, the Mithril Maidens, are down on their luck and looking for their next big score. They are approached by a secretive half-elf and a gnomish scholar with an offer to make a lot of gold quick. All they have to do is take a book on gardening and animal husbandry to an abbey about a days travel outside of the capital. It should be a cake walk, but things have a way of taking a dark turn between the pages of Sex, Drugs, and Saving Throws.

The boys are joined by Soapy Jones this week for a discussion of one of her least favorite songs, "Pour Some Sugar on Me" by Def Leppard. Or is it by Motley Crüe? Does it even matter when the song sucks this much? Soapy thinks that the entire song must have been recorded in an airplane hangar, Josh whips out the ol' axe to poke fun at the backing guitar, and Hayden asks what is probably the most important questions of our time: what the hell is Dokken?
You've probably read about Led Zeppelin's success in their famous biography "Hammer of the Gods". You watched Queen take over the world in "Bohemian Rhapsody". And although you probably won't admit it to your friends, you enjoyed the crazy TV ride in Motley Crüe's "The Dirt". Rock bios are all the rage. Lead singers, guitarists, managers, roadies, groupies, even drummers have told their tales and they all point to the same reason for their success...The Fans: This is their story. Unquestionably, John Corabi is one of the most unique and instantly recognizable voices in rock history. John's unique vocals and songwriting were standout elements in his music and albums with motley crue and the dead daisies. Over the years John has also fronted his own bands w/ The Scream and Union w/ex-Kiss guitarist Bruce Kulick and brief stints in Ratt and Brides of destruction. John has been at the top musically with the bands that he's been with and in his solo career. John's vocal abilities and songwriting skills come to the fore in both his solo albums, Unplugged in 2012 and Live in Nashville in 2018. I caught up with John while has was spending the weekend at a trailer park in Nashville and he detailed the making of his lates single Cosi Bella. Through the conversation we also discussed his songwriting process, his thoughts on making music in the age of streaming services, his time with Motley Crüe, his upcoming biography Horseshoes And Hand Grenades his thoughts on touring and a whole lot more. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- For more check out https://www.johncorabi.com ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Follow Tales from the Road Facebook https://www.facebook.com/talesfromtheroadofficial Instagram https://www.instagram.com/talesfromtheroad/ Subscribe on Spotify | Apple Podcasts | Google | Gaana |Audible You can also read, watch, listen via our website https://www.tftrmedia.com Hosted & Produced by Vikram Chandrasekar and Moving Pictures Media
