This episode of “Nature Calls, Conversations from the Hudson Valley” is a retrospective look at one of the early radio interviews from our precursor show, “Digging in With Master Gardeners,” aired on WGXC, 90.7 FM. Teresa and Jean interviewed Master Gardener Volunteer Kathryn Schneider about birds. Kathryn was introduced to the joys of birding by her mother who was a birdwatcher. She took it about as far as you can, since she now has a PhD in Ornithology and has written a guidebook called “Birding the Hudson Valley.” The purpose of the book was to allow people to understand their area and go birding. She started by covering the basics on bird identification and the recording of observations, where to find particular birds, and the importance of knowing the bird's biology. Learning about how birds feed and what they do helps guide successful birders. The second half of the book is a list of sites in the Hudson Valley where birdwatching is rewarding. Actually feeding birds is the second biggest hobby in the country. But we don't feed birds for ecology and the good of nature. We tend to feed them to amuse ourselves watching them. We can prevent getting bored by providing the correct food for the birds we want to watch, so a little research can improve the view. Planting your garden to draw birds is another way to enhance your enjoyment. In a nutshell, native plants are best, and the careful choice of trees can be helpful. Birds don't just eat seeds. They eat bugs, worms, caterpillars, berries and even nectar. Bird feeders are best used when the flowers are not blooming because birds will ignore feeders if they have more interesting things to eat. Winter is prime time because they can use the extra nutrition to keep warm. Late November to early April are safer months to put out feeders, especially if you have bears for neighbors. But keep in mind that they're not always sleeping when you think they should be in these times of climate change so adjust based on the weather. Bears don't tend to hibernate until they can no longer find food. After the first significant snowfall might be the safer bet to put out your feeders. Going down the list of pesky critters, we also have: squirrels. Baffles above and below the feeder can help to keep them away. Grackles, cowbirds and starlings usually travel around in flocks. Hawks and cats can also be problematic. Kathy says cats shouldn't be outside because they are killing millions of birds and have even made some of them extinct, while it should be remembered that hawks need to feed their babies, too. It's best to give blue jays their own feeder with peanuts in the shell to keep them distracted and away from your other feeders. Kathy then reviews the best ways to observe birds and how to identify them. Sibley and Peterson Guides are her favorite, and the Merlin phone app is an excellent resource. She also suggests you research the type of binoculars to use. Many will work fine, but many are just wrong. Once you've outgrown watching your feeder visitors, it's time to go to them. She suggests that you look for a local bird club and ask to go along on a walk. Figure what birds to expect there and look for them specifically. Bird clubs are relatively easy to find, including the Audubon Society, so join groups in your area. Guided bird walks are everywhere, including Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE) sponsored ones, often led by Kathy herself. The conversation concludes with specific topics including the population biology for birds, the Christmas Bird Count, and specific discussions about robins, bluebirds, ravens and vultures. Send us a textA courtroom trembles, a forest goes quiet, and a Capitol locks its doors and somehow they all tell the same story about trust. We start with the indictment of former FBI Director James Comey and examine what happens when the Justice Department looks like an instrument of revenge rather than a referee. We weigh the evidence, the reported push from political appointees, and the practical stakes for congressional testimony, prosecutorial norms, and the fragile belief that law can still be blind. From there, we step into the Gombe forest to honor Jane Goodall her patient, ground-shifting discoveries and her stubborn, disciplined optimism that turned science into stewardship. Toolmaking chimps, mourning and conflict, kinship over dominion her life reminds us that hope works only when tied to action. Roots & Shoots, local projects, and the invitation to plant a tree or fund a habitat are not small gestures; they're how trust is rebuilt in the real world. Finally, we confront the ritual of government shutdowns: the history, the needless cost, and the predictable ending in compromise. We call out the politics that rewards defiance over governing and explain how normalized dysfunction corrodes civic faith. Along the way, we challenge the media's left–right reflex around mass violence and the algorithmic churn that turns tragedy into team sport, arguing for slower, clearer reporting and prevention-focused solutions. If you're tired of cynicism but hungry for clarity, this conversation offers a map: protect prosecutorial independence, practice transparent compromise, support conservation, and choose small, concrete acts over doomscrolling. Learn more about the behind-the-scenes running of a restaurant in Round Top, NY. It's more than just the garden, and the kitchen. Julia Joern, Henning Nordanger, and Dan Hartquis are back on Nature Calls; Conversations from the Hudson Valley to finish their journey to create Julia's Local. There are plenty of business decisions that need to be made to keep a restaurant viable. It started from renovating an old house, that had lots of nooks and crannies, into an inviting place to enjoy a meal. As a non-tipping establishment, they have opted to use this approach to attract and retain a great staff. Julia's Local grows their own food in their culinary garden located on Blackhead Mountain Road on 1+ acres. Everything is started from seed. With the help of 'Tractor Dan', they have been cultivating the soil since the early summer of 2023. They grow root vegetables, peppers, garlic, kale, spinach, and berry bushes. They even have greenhouses where they grow both heirloom and sun gold tomatoes. Their raised bed gardens are used to grow herbs, nasturtiums, and other edible flowers, as well as the flowers they use on their dining room tables. But that's not all! Their garage houses multiple types of microgreens that thrive under grow lights. Learn where 'Tractor Dan' sources his seeds and how they keep the produce coming all year long. In addition to the restaurant, they offer some frozen 'small batch' offerings such as soups, stews, pot pies, that can be ordered online. It's a great option when hosting surprise guests and being able to provide them with a delicious meal. Cooking classes are also occasionally offered. So regardless of the season, enjoy learning about what it takes to run a farm-to-table restaurant and take the time to check out this local gem! A government amendment to its planning bill would be disastrous for both wildlife and big building projects; that's the warning from the Wildlife Trusts which wants ministers to reconsider. The Rare Breeds Survival Trust releases its latest watchlist today, and says that while there is good news for some native breeds, others like the Manx Locton sheep are falling in number. It wants the Government to re-establish a Ministerial Native Breeds Roundtable. Today we are looking at a silvopasture project in Wales, as part of our week on agroforestry. Silvopasture combines trees, livestock grazing and pasture management. Tom Clare and Jacqui Banks who farm in North Pembrokeshire use badger faced sheep in their system which they've been running for a decade. From Brian Ginsler, Ginsler Wealth CEO: In my last quarterly letter I discussed the benefits of “doing nothing” (sometimes) as it relates to investing, but suggested that in my next quarterly letter I would discuss the benefits of “doing something”. So here we go... I returned to Algonquin Park in the Fall—my regular annual trip with my buddies. At 2am on our last night, I woke up in the tent and nature was calling. When this happens, the goal is typically to jump out of the tent, do what has to be done, and jump right back in quickly. But while I was outside the tent, I noticed that the pitch darkness of bedtime had turned into a bright moonlit night; the temperature was mild; and I did not hear any bears rustling in the woods (phew). Instead of jumping back into the tent quickly…nature actually was calling…so I decided to do something. Listen to this episode to find out what Brian did... Green burials, also referred to as natural burials, are structured to care for the dead with minimal impact to the environment. In many ways, green burials are a return to the past with simple methods. We once disposed of our dead in earth-friendly, regenerative ways with no chemicals and biodegradable containers. Dust to dust. But over the last 150 years, death care has become toxic and polluting in the United States. Over the last two decades, however, green burials are increasingly considered a sustainable death care choice that contributes to a healthier and less wasteful planet. In today's world, most death rites are linked to a $15 billion market of goods and services including cultural traditions, use of chemical embalming, sealed hardwood and metal caskets, reinforced concrete vaults and liners, and restrictive cemetery rules. Rituals can vary widely along ethnic, geographical, and religious lines. In contrast, natural burials help to curb unsustainable conventional care of a deceased body that pollute, dishonor natural decomposition processes, and provide grieving families to experiences of loss, through a connection to each other as well as the natural world. Suzanne Kelly, an author, scholar, farmer, cemetery administrator, and resident of the Hudson Valley, explores the myths that drive many of our standard environmentally damaging burial practices. In her book, Greening Death – Reclaiming Burial Practices and Restoring Our Tie to the Earth, she explores the myths that drive many of our standard environmentally damaging burial practices and the movement to ‘green' death while integrating death and life. In this episode of Nature Calls; Conversations from the Hudson Valley, learn how people are reclaiming old practices of death care in new ways and thus changing the American way of death. Suzanne sheds light on the ways in which individuals can make a positive impact on the planet even in death. As the movement lays claim to greener, simpler, and more cost-efficient practices, it also offers tangible way of restoring our relationship to nature. Dave Simonett, lead singer and songwriter of the bluegrass-adjacent Trampled by Turtles, is a talented musician AND a great outdoorsman. From the small town of Mankato, Minnesota, to the vibrant music scenes of Duluth and Minneapolis, Simonett shares his upbringing in a musically-inclined, nature-loving family, shaped by the sounds of church hymns and classic rock. In our Basic Folk conversation, he opens up about his dual passions for music and the great outdoors, recounting his experiences with pheasant hunting and conservation efforts in Minnesota. He reflects on the parallels between the camaraderie found in hunting and playing music, emphasizing the importance of trying new things and embracing the unknown. We also delve into the evolution of Trampled by Turtles' unique sound – described as a "butterfly's heartbeat" – and the band's journey from traditional bluegrass to their own distinct style.Elsewhere in the episode, Simonett talks about the challenges and rewards of maintaining artistic integrity in the music industry while balancing creative growth with commercial pressures. He shares insights on his band's latest project, Always Here, Always Now, a dual EP featuring recordings by both Trampled by Turtles (Always Here) and his solo project, Dead Man Winter (Always Now). He wrote five songs and instead of picking a band to record the tracks, he handed them over to both bands to do what they will to the music. The results are very cool to listen to side by side. The episode wraps up with a fun lightning round, where Dave reveals his dream supergroup and favorite hunter orange accessory (gotta be safe out there!).Follow Basic Folk on social media: https://basicfolk.bio.link/ Sign up for Basic Folk's newsletter: https://bit.ly/basicfolknews Help produce Basic Folk by contributing: https://basicfolk.com/donate/ Interested in sponsoring us? When you ask Devon what film he wants to do for his birthday, he panics and says the first thing that pops to his mind... specifically, the scene where Jim Carrey crawls out of a robot rhino's butthole. What better way to spend his birthday than with the boys talking about an actor that Lukas hates. Which family member of one of ours thinks this is the funniest movie ever made? We are calling this episode of Reading With Your Kids If a Pigeon Poops in the Woods: Nature Calls us to Log Off and Laugh. Our first guest is JD Peabody, author of the Inkwell Chronicles fantasy series. J D returns to the show to celebrate the second book in the series. He tells us that the series was inspired by CS Lewis' Chronicles of Narnia and a real 1952 train crash in London. Peabody aimed to introduce kids to literature through "Easter eggs" subtly referenced in the books. The series follows siblings Everett and B as they search for their missing father and protect magical ink from villains. We also speak with Britt Gondolfi about her new book "Look Up: Fontaine the Pigeon Starts a Revolution." Gondolfi co-wrote and illustrated the book with her friend Amanda Romanick. The book addresses modern technology overuse through a humorous story about birds pooping on phones to get people's attention. Gondolfi discussed struggles finding balance with her own phone and her daughter's usage. She and Romanick worked together from the start, hoping to inspire more connection between nature, humanity and each other. Click here to visit our website - www.readingwithyourkids.com
