A lot happened in craft beer this year... This week we take a look back at some of the biggest stories in craft beer in 2019.  Breweries continued to open in record numbers, finishing the year with over 8,000 craft brewers operating across the US.  However, brewery closures climbed as well, with over 300 shuttering this year.  Big brewers struggled to maintain market share, closing locations or cancelling planned expansions.  Breweries sold to Big Beer, and merged to form larger craft breweries.  Consumers continue to have more variety than ever and that presents it's own challenges for retailers and brewers.  Shelf space and tap handles are beyond crowded, and with a brewery close to most neighborhoods more people are drinking their beers at the source.  Both racial and gender diversity continue to be a focus for the industry with Founders very public mishandling of a discrimination suit this year making it clear we still have some work to do.  Craft beer saw a surprising competitor with hard seltzer booming this year from both macro and craft brewers.  A lot happened in the beer world this year, 2020 should be wild ride. Beers to ring in the New Year Champagne may be the traditional toast for your New Year's Eve festivities but there are plenty of great beers that can deliver the same light, fruity, and effervescent character you get with a bottle of bubbly.  We share a few recommendations as we cover our news stories The Beer List Brasserie Dupont - Saison Dupont Brasserie Dupont - Avec Les Bons Voeux Blackberry Farms - Classic Prairie - Prairie-vous Français   Jester King - Provenance Batch #2 Duvel Moortgat - Duvel THE CHAMPAGNE OF BEERS ICYMI: More to listen to Check out some of our other great episodes. pFriem Family Brewers with Josh Pfriem | Ep. 201 AleSmith Brewing’s Peter Zien | Ep. 197 Deschutes Brewery with Brian Faivre and Kyle Matthias | Ep. 194

Beer membership clubs with pFriem Family Brewers Find pFriem: pfriembeer.com Along with doing your own brewery events, I think utilizing a membership club is one of the best ways to market and brand your brewery. Whether you go more towards something like a mug club, or more towards the style of a wine club, you have an opportunity to connect more deeply with your core brand fanatics (or create them!) You can be sure that bringing someone closer to your brand will develop a stronger affinity, which can result in those folks being more of an advocate for your brand. Those that are closer to you and your brand will be sharing your beer and stories with their friends and acquaintances. pFriem Family Brewers is a great case for building a wine club style membership. They have just launched this club and have been strategically organizing it to make sure they can run the club well. So far, they started the club with an invitation only process and are now starting to roll it out more to public. Tombstone Brewing joins us for our 200th episode Tombstone Brewing's Matt Brown joins us on Beer Guys Radio this week for our 200th episode.  We learn about the craft beer and homebrewing scene in Arizona, working with unique yeasts, and the anatomy of a tumbleweed. Matt Brown was a lawyer before founding his brewery.  We've mentioned before how strange it is that so many attorneys go on to open breweries.  We should take a head count... maybe start a club. Brown opened Tombstone in 2016, bringing in Weedy Weidenthal (formerly of Huntsville, AL's Blue Pants Brewery) to be his head brewer.  The pair brews up a variety of hoppy and barrel-aged beers, and has a pretty extensive wild ale program.  On its best day, Tombstone has a population of about 1,300.  However, the town is the 2nd most popular tourist destination in the state, just behind the Grand Canyon. Episode 82: pFriem Family Brewers’ Josh Pfriem: Nuance and Subtlety is the Key in Everything from Pilsner to Wood-Aged Sours

Craft Beer & Brewing Magazine Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later May 10, 2019 53:37

For Josh Pfriem of pFriem Family Brewers, every beer they make—from Pilsner to wood-aged sour—expresses a brewing philosophy that prizes nuance and depth. Still, he’s amazed that craft beer today is embracing lagers to the degree that it is. “If you had told me back in 2011 that pFriem Pilsner in 2019 was going to be our flagship beer, I probably would have passed out from excitement or never believed that would have happened. It’s awesome to be at this point.” In this multifaceted conversation, Pfriem discusses how they build character with malt in pale lagers, how their goal for hops in Pilsner is to taste “like springtime running through a field of wildflowers,” balancing tradition with contemporary techniques like whirlpool hopping, how carbon dioxide is the under appreciated fifth ingredient in beer, why brewing wood-aged sours is more akin to winemaking, targeting acidity levels and controlling acidity to make better sour beers, timing specific styles for stages in a barrel’s life cycle, fruit additions for sour beers, the beauty of blending, and the benefit of constant iteration and improvement. “If we brew Pilsner 200-300 times over the course of the year, we can make incremental changes that make it better and better and better,” says Pfriem. “Making beer is great. But making it better is even more great.” This episode is brought to you by: Ss Brewtech (https://www.ssbrewtech.com): The founders launched Ss Brewtech with a very clear goal to advance brewing equipment design, performance, and quality to the very highest standards in the industry. The pfabulous brewery with the pfunny name, pFriem Family Brewers out of Hood River, Oregon has been perfecting styles and racking up medals since 2012. We get to try a variety of styles here thanks to head brewer Gavin Lord who sent us a generous package for our reviewing pleasure. And it’s a pleasure, indeed. But we also talk a lot about what Ja Rule has been up to these days, explain both “dankness” and centrifuges with immaculate precision, get the dill out, and receive a terrible nickname from a toddler. Grab your own fish and sit down for a pristine evening with one of the best breweries in the world. Beers Reviewed Pilsner Super Saison Dank IPA Frambozen Oud Bruin

Our very first episode was SO FUN. We loved sitting down to taste the Super Saison by pFriem Family Brewers. Through this tasting, we learn a little history about the brewery, why Adam loves this beer so dang much (he has bottles stashed away), and how crushable this beer truly is. Hope you enjoy! =)
