N. D. Wilson has authored numerous middle grade fiction books, as well as non-fiction, including "Leepike Ridge” (a children's adventure story) and “100 Cupboards” series. He has written and been the executive producer of a Netflix children's series called “Hello Ninja.” There are four seasons and it is highly ranked on Netflix. He has a great podcast called “Stories are Soul Food.” It is one of Elisha's favorite podcasts! What is a middle grade novel? It is a sweet spot for 5th and 6th graders, as well as those heading into middle school. It is all of the intelligence, none of the hormones. N. D. wanted to write stories that had concrete endings, resolve/resolutions, the good guys won, and also be able to avoid content that he didn't want to get into naturally and realistically. These stories mark the memories of kids and who they want to be in life, who brands them as they move forward. The last summer of your childhood is where a middle grade novel can hang out. You can have that happy ending in kid's books. A big part of why he targets this demographic is because it's a good moment of branding the imagination as kids become young adults moving forward with really great stories. If you love Narnia, The Hobbit, and stories that mark your imagination when you are 11, 12, 13, those stories stay with you in a really great permanent way. N.D. said that “when it comes to content, what I want is not to protect my kids from things with which they disagree. I want to equip them to disagree. I want them to have clear eyes and a vision for what is good and bad, dangerous and healthy, and thinking how would I change it and what would I do? I want them to be in the driver seat of authority. I don't want my kids ever to consume any story of any kind like a baby bird, where they have their head back and mouth wide open. I want all of it to be active, engaged, tearing things apart and finding the good and bad. When it comes to narrative, they need to be really perceptive and picky. Pickiness meaning it takes a lot to impress them. They should develop instincts for truth, goodness and beauty and pulling those things out.” You can learn more and follow N. D. When a child comes in experiencing significant weight loss, nutritional deficiency or a lack of interest in food, they may be diagnosed with an eating disorder like anorexia nervosa. However, these symptoms overlap with a newer DSM-5 diagnosis: Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID). Children with ARFID go beyond the phases of a picky eater and while they display similar signs of other eating disorders, there are tell-tale differences, including no evidence of negative thoughts on the child's body or a desire to lose weight.Valley Children's VP of Academic Affairs and board certified in pediatric hospital medicine Dr. Jolie Limon hosts pediatric gastroenterologist Dr. Karla Au Yeung and pediatric psychologist Dr. Amanda Suplee in this episode of Valley Children's Voice. Listen in as they discuss ARFID, how it differs from other eating disorders and the physical and psychological symptoms and risks.

When is pickiness a problem versus when your preferences are perceived as picky by others - that's the topic of this week's episode. "Why haven't I found my person yet? Maybe I am just too picky?"  Sound familiar?   PIckiness can be a problem when the story you tell yourself is that nobody is good enough for you. I share why that type of story is typically rooted in past trauma and past self-protection; and what you can do about it.  I also explore how dating from a place of abundance instead of proving something or someone wrong helps you attract people you align with and are excited to be around.  In other words, when you stop trying to please others and instead turn the focus on your wants and needs, your person will gravitate towards you.  As you listen to this episode, ask yourself these questions: What do I sincerely want? How can I permit myself to be authentic? And, how can I work on remaining open to being surprised? Chances are, my gorgeous friend, you are not too picky. But that doesn't mean there isn't some work to be done.  SHOW NOTES: https://bit.ly/3h6s2qK DATE BRAZEN ON INSTAGRAM: http://instagram/com/datebrazen

Did you know there is a science dedicated to teaching cooking skills?  How and what we serve at our table makes a big difference in our health.  Our guest shares why she teaches medical students about nutrition. Dr. Jacque Nyenhuis is a chef, dietitian, professor of medicine, and farms on the side. She started working in restaurant kitchens when she was 16 and moved up from dishwasher through just about every position in culinary. She has spent several decades teaching and mentoring medical doctors, chefs, medical students and families how to move towards better health through simple cooking and sharing of meals. Jacque co-authored a nutrition textbook used in Universities across the country and several cookbooks. She had her own television cooking show, radio show, syndicated nutrition column that ran in newspapers throughout the US and Canada, a monthly food and nutrition column for Saturday Evening Post and currently teaches nutrition and is director of the Culinary Medicine Lab at the University of Central Florida College of Medicine in Orlando, Florida. Key points: What is culinary medicine? It’s about how food can move us toward better health Evidence-based science of teaching cooking skills Help people to develop skills for better health Teach medical students so they have tools to use with patients There are significant barriers to putting a healthy meal on the table: It is stressful when you are busy Talked with women around the US and internationally about what makes it hard: Time Financial pressures Pickiness (don’t eat some foods) People choose nutrition interventions along political party lines: Should government be involved in the solutions or not Is fast food to blame Lots of noise about what we should choose Being bullied is embarrassing Questions can feel like bullying Two of top 3 items that people have a belief not supported by science are food items. How to give medical students better tools: Medical students and physicians love the class They have to put aside personal ideology and talk to the patient about health It can be hard for younger professionals to give advice when they may not be cooking for themselves Need to find simple ways to eat at home 76% of doctors felt they didn’t get enough information about nutrition in med school More than half were not comfortable talking about fad diets and nutrition Doctors want more information Doctors are overwhelmed with information Helping families develop good eating habits to improve health is important: Don’t have to change every habit Creating a meal-time habit including: Plates Serving multiple food groups Sitting down Cutting out constant snacking all day long Three tips to overcome Food Bullying: Show grace for the person who is bullying me Show grace to myself in my response to food bullying Kindly and gently set the record straight Links: Jacque Nyenhuis website: www.cookingwithjacque.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/cookingwithjaqcue/ Instagram: @cookingwithjacque Have you liked the Food Bullying Podcast’s Facebook page? Nikki did have a posh coffee pod thingy though, so that took the edge off. We also talk about how to deal with customers who might be being overly picky with you. Sometimes you have to be strong, take the reins and be the professional by advising your customer what is best. After all, that is what they commissioned you for. And tying into all of this is perfectionism and how we all spend too much time striving for perfection, when we could better utilise our time on honing our skills.
