The Modern Therapist's Survival Guide with Curt Widhalm and Katie Vernoy
How Therapists Can Truly Help After a Disaster Curt and Katie chat about the impact of the recent Los Angeles wild fires on therapists, their clients, and communities. We explore the importance of self-assessment, responsible crisis response, and balancing personal care with providing support. From donating (and marketing) services ethically to understanding trauma timelines, Curt and Katie provide practical advice for therapists navigating community-wide disasters. Transcripts for this episode will be available at mtsgpodcast.com! In this podcast episode we talk through how therapists can help during and after crises Curt and Katie live in Los Angeles, which was recently ravaged by wild fires. We decided it would be important to reflect on our experience and provide support to other therapists seeking ways they may be able to help their own communities. Self-Assessment and Prioritizing Personal Care during a Natural Disaster or Community Crisis Therapists are encouraged to assess their capacity to provide support, ensuring they do not overextend themselves during a crisis. Curt emphasizes radical acceptance and forgiveness for cancellations or temporary service disruptions caused by disasters. Katie highlights the importance of therapists taking care of themselves before offering services, noting the potential for long-term impacts on both providers and clients. How to Market Therapy during a crisis without feeling like an ambulance chaser Curt and Katie stress the importance of donating services ethically, avoiding lead generation tactics or branding during a crisis. They discuss reviewing scheduled marketing campaigns to ensure sensitivity to the current situation. Therapists are encouraged to work with established organizations (like the Red Cross) to maximize the impact of their efforts. Curt and Katie discuss the risks of using disasters to build personal brands and stress focusing solely on service and support. They suggest volunteering with experienced organizations to avoid complications and maximize resources for those in need. Recognizing Individual Needs and Trauma Timelines for disaster survivors Not all clients experience or process trauma in the same way; therapists must tailor their support to individual needs and stages of impact. Curt shares insights from his experience supporting clients after the Boston Marathon bombing, emphasizing the importance of addressing varying levels of trauma severity. Katie highlights the need for long-term care systems to address ongoing trauma responses. How Therapists can balance Caretaking and Personal Needs during a disaster Curt shares his experience of being overwhelmed by personal messages and work demands during the crisis. Katie emphasizes the importance of setting boundaries and giving oneself permission to focus on personal care. Therapists are reminded that they are part of the crisis too and should ensure they meet their own needs before taking on the caretaker role. Today I speak with Ysaline, mother of two, life coach and doula. Ysaline recounts her own very different postpartum experiences, in part due to her father passing just two months after her baby was born, and one baby being born during the time of the Covid 19 pandemic, a period when there was no clear vision of the future and so much uncertainty as to when she could hug her overseas family again. We chat about the unrealistic expectations we often place on ourselves as mothers, the beliefs we may carry around sadness, crying and sleep, and the powerful transformation we go through and why support, care and help is vital to every mother. Ysaline shares her beautiful practice of Rebozo massage, rooted in Mexican cultural practices for releasing physical tension, working through the emotions, slowing down and deeply honouring the complexity of all of life's transitions.Ysaline runs womens circles in Sydney and monthly Mums' Cafe Connect meetups in Redfern in both English & French languages.I hope you enjoy the episode.Shownotes:YSALINE'S INSTAGRAM: @mamamourYOUTUBE VERSION: https://youtu.be/c6znPbGKL3I

Brad Crowell 0:01 Fuck yeah. Lesley Logan 0:02 Get ready for some wins. Lesley Logan 0:05 Welcome to the Be It Till You See It podcast where we talk about taking messy action, knowing that perfect is boring. I'm Lesley Logan, Pilates instructor and fitness business coach. I've trained thousands of people around the world and the number one thing I see stopping people from achieving anything is self-doubt. My friends, action brings clarity and it's the antidote to fear. Each week, my guest will bring bold, executable, intrinsic and targeted steps that you can use to put yourself first and Be It Till You See It. It's a practice, not a perfect. Let's get started. Lesley Logan 0:47 Happy Friday, Be It babe, thank you so much for being back here. Oh my gosh, I'm so grateful for you. Here we are, February 9th, in real time, and these ones can be listened to, you know, in the past in the future, repeated, especially if they're one of your wins. So what I do is I read one of your wins, I share one of mine. And then we have a little affirmation for you to repeat. So you can end the weekend on a high note instead of just like looking forward to Saturday. So here is the deal. Here is one of your wins. We're gonna go with Melissa Nagai, she's an Agency member. She said I take Thursdays off. I have slipped up and taken on teaching a few times in last year and (inaudible) myself every time I do that. I also started having cleaners come and told them, they could come on Thursdays which also limits what I can do on Thursday because I need to be here to deal with the dog when they come. Anyhow, I've rescheduled them all and freed up my Thursdays again. Now I can do what I want or need to do on a Thursday and have some flexibility with my schedule. Boundaries are something I have become so much better at because of Agency. Way to go. Melissa, you are incredible. Boundaries. So important. I was interviewed by Cory Sterling of Conscious Counsel. He said what is one thing that people in this business need to learn so that they can have a thriving business? I said boundaries. So I love it. Lesley Logan 2:01 Okay, so Sonia, also an Agency member. And by the way, I'm just doing a lot of agency members, because we're doing Agency Mini coming up. And I just, I love sharing all of the wins because they just have epic ones because it's mostly like, out of 150 members, 140 are women. And it's so important that you hear women in business having wins. So, a Facebook memory popped up today, five years ago since launching my own business. Although I've been teaching for many years for someone else it was, it was the time I finally got the courage to branch out and go for it. I started teaching my own group classes and advertising my one-to-ones, I had no clue that I was going to grow to the business I have today. I am so, so grateful for my clients and family and friends but also for LL, Brad and Agency who gave me the strength and competence and tools to get here. I'm not done yet. Anyone here who is willing to take the leap for but fear is holding you back, I encourage you to go for it. I would never have believed I could be where I am now if I if you told me five years ago, so grateful. Oh my freaking goodness, Sonia, you're just, thank you for sharing that you're celebrating that. And also for reminding people that they can do it, too. And for giving them that permission. That is just so freakin incredible. It's so amazing. We're so happy for you. And I know you've got big changes coming up and we can't wait to support you in those. Lesley Logan 3:17 So here's the deal, guys. It's time for me to share my win. My win this week is my incredible team, holy frickin moly. I mean, you probably think that like when you have a team that like you're scraped from all the time, but I am just absolutely so grateful and they are a win. And that is because it is not easy to take on people on your team. It's not easy to ask for help, and it's not easy to then hire said help. It is not easy to invest in that because it's very scary. It's very scary. To go okay, yeah, you're gonna work with me for ongoing forever, for as long as this works out. But it's a huge win. Because here we are today, February 9th, which is a couple days before agency Mini 10 starts, which, if you're a teacher, a studio owner, Agency Mini 10, you'll want to be part of it. It's our probably the only time we're doing it this year, we haven't decided about the fall. So I couldn't do it without the team the first time we opened Agency, it was just me. And we only had a few members. And then as I got more members, I had to hire people because I couldn't do it all myself. And my win is you know, hiring this amazing team, really believing in myself enough to know that I could have an amazing team and then continuing to invest in them so that our business can grow we can have the impact we want to make. You know I share this with you as a win because you have amazing dreams that you want to have and I promise you that some of those dreams are just gonna require you to ask for some help from people on your team and the Be It Pod's on your team for sure. And if you're a Pilates studio or teacher we can be on your team in a bigger, bigger ways. But my win is just them. They're just freaking awesome. So thank you. Thank you all for listening. Thank you for being part of this Be It Pod. We are so grateful for you. Lesley Logan 4:55 Okay, your affirmation for today is I can be soft in my heart and firm in my boundaries. Yes, you can. You can be soft in your heart and firm in your boundaries. I can be soft in my heart and firm in my boundaries. So remind yourself that when your boundaries feel like they're being crossed, remember the wins our people have shared with you and also go ask for some help. That may be one day you're gonna be celebrating that as your win that you asked for some help. All right loves have an amazing day. Till next time, Be It Till You See It. Lesley Logan 5:26 That's all I got for this episode of the Be It Till You See It Podcast. I don't believe we can rely on our agencies or employers to take care of our development or help us with safe care. I believe we need to make sure we are being proactive to make sure we have what we need to help us keep developing as therapists and that we are doing what we can to prevent burnout so we can continue to do the work we love. This is why I LOVE THERABUNDLE. Today I want to introduce you to my friend and colleague, Tamara Howell who created it.

Welcome to the Damn Dude Podcast! This is Season 2, Episode 21!- What we Know that we Know.- What we Know that we Don't Know.- What we Don't Know that we Don't Know.- All Beings want the same things: Happiness, and to Not Suffer.- Forgiving the people who murdered my best friends.Forgiveness: - What does it REALLY mean to forgive? And how do we know when we've accepted it in a way where we can move on in a healthy way without holding on to any resentment? (Sometimes us not fully forgiving someone is keeping us connected to them but not in the right way) - Most importantly, how do we learn to forgive ourselves?!! When we didn't respond the way we wanted to/or treat a situation how we should have. Personal needs: - We all have different needs (physical, emotional, spiritual) but some of us are disconnected from what our needs actually are. If our needs go unmet for most of our life (whether we were conscious of this or not) we don't really know ourselves until we unlock what we need in order to feel fulfilled. - Sometimes we aren't aware we're not having a need met until we are face to face with it (is this the universes way of trying to show us something?!) - Different needs being met can lead us to even more self awareness and what we crave deep down.Remember to say 3 things you're Gratful for every morning and every night!- Available on all major platforms!IG/FB: @DamnDudePodcasatAvailable on all major platforms: https://damndudepodcast.buzzsprout.com/- Apple Podcasts- Buzzspout- Spotify- Google Podcasts- Amazon Music- iTunes- Stitcher- iHeart Radio- TuneIn + Alexa- Podcast Addict- PodChaser- Pocket Casts- Deezer- Listen Notes- Player Fm- Podcast Index- Overcast- Castro- Castbox- Podfriend- YouTubeDaaaaaaamn Duuuuuude!!!!!Be sure to leave a 5 Star written review on Apple Podcast/Listen Notes! :)If you'd love and support the show, please feel free to make a donation to the Damn Dude Podcast!(link below)Anything and everything is Appreciated! :) Much Love, Love All.Support the show (https://paypal.me/DamnDudePodcast?locale.x=en_US)

In this episode, Jules Maloney of the Wisconsin Chapter joins me to discuss the 'needs onion'. This layered approach of understanding that every behavior is an expression of a need, helps us become more self-aware and move past judgment. Jules and I take an in-depth look at our needs as a human, discuss real-life real-time examples of identifying our needs and how to manage those feelings and physical changes they could bring on. Our discussion mainly focuses on going through the onion from the inside out - which helps lead us to better self-awareness. In the future, we will work the needs onion from the outside to the inside to help analyze and understand the behavior of others. Jules is also hosting a Zoom Learning Roundtable on needs on Wednesday, October 20th - 7:00-8:30pm EST. https://www.chapmancommunities.org/

Hello Everyone! We are beyond honored to introduce today’s guest on the podcast, Ryan Hurst, Co-Founder and Head Coach at GMB Fitness. After a training accident ended his competitive gymnastics career, Ryan moved to Japan and competed in various martial arts until another injury made him reevaluate his priorities in life. Since then, Ryan has devoted his life to coaching others in strength and movement, but always lets his philosophy of “training for a healthy life” lead the way. He has lived in Osaka, Japan for the last 25 years, is a father to two young children, and the most important thing to him is to be able to play with them without pain or fear of injury. His mission is to show everyone that you can define your own fitness as a sustainable and enjoyable part of your life. He holds black belts in Kendo, Judo, and Shorinji Kempo, a purple belt in BJJ, and practiced 10 years as a competitive gymnast. What we discussHow Ryan's long history with gymnastics, martial arts and the outdoors shaped his mindset and work ethic; His move to Japan as a student and dedication towards the practice of Kendo and Judo; Meeting his business partners Andy Fossett and Jarlo Ilano, and the beginning of GMB Fitness; The importance of making fitness simple, accessible and efficient for each person's personal needs; Truly understanding the WHY behind your movement practice and how it helps streamline the path to results; Prevalent myths of fitness and how they actually limit our health & well-being; Significant benefits of being process-, rather than results-oriented in our movement practices. When I was a sales trainer for a travel agency many years ago we would provide training around 8 basic personal needs that motivate. They are : Belonging, Achievement, Advancement, Power, Responsibility, Challenge, Recognition and Excellence. We would ask our staff to choose 2 or 3 that applied to them, then we'd discuss each of the needs. They would also disucss which needs applied to their team members. Which of these needs apply to you? What are your basic personal needs that keep you motivated?

Many of us are awakening to new realities, some of us are realizing that we have been sweeping our feelings under the rug for a while. What changes are you experiencing right now? How are you dealing with those changes and awakenings? Many are awakening to communication issues in their household. How do we open up the line of communication in our marriage? How do we begin to understand our feelings, emotions, and needs? Dan Nelson gives us the historical perspective later in the hour, to expose that in the early time things were tough maybe even tougher!

How can you think through the use of wealth that exceeds your personal needs? This is a perennial question to which Paul Schervish applies the perennial insights of St. Ignatius. In this conversation with Keith Whitaker, Paul shares elements of the 'discernment process' and its application to the disposition of wealth. He also talks about how discernment takes into account the joys and anxieties wealth-holders feel about the impact of wealth on others. And he even recounts some of the challenges he faced in a career of studying wealth and philanthropy within academia. This is a useful discussion for anyone seeking to connect wealth with deeper purpose.

Everything we do is out of our personal need.Today is a great day to get something done. Let's start it off right by listening to todays Appitalize On Your Idea: The Podcast episode 6 with my guest Pam Lefkowitz from Core Computing in Chicago. Pam is an Apple Consultant, who in her spare time likes to knit. She tells us how there were no good ways to make graph paper patters digitally. So what did she do? She went out and made an app! She found ways to outsource the coding and even bartered for the design work inside the app. Pam talks about the struggles of getting the app out there, and the downsides to apps ("buy once own forever"). What I love about this interview with Pam is that despite that her app isn't making a ton of money - she went out and did it. She took a risk with it. I applaud Pam's tenacity for jumping in and I think every can learn a valuable lesson from the episode.Listen to the whole interview below the jump.Links Mentioned During the Show:Core Computing - Pam's companyInfo on DesignKNITDesignKNIT on the App StoreFor more information check out Appitalize On Your Idea.
