The first episode of Season 2 of The Sounding Jewish Podcast features Dr. Anna Schultz. We discuss her ethnographic fieldwork with the Bene Israel Jewish communities of India and Israel.Anna Schultz is Associate Professor of Music at the University of Chicago, where she is also an associate member of the Department of South Asian Languages and Civilizations and a member of the Greenberg Center for Jewish Studies. The core issue animating her research in India and beyond is music's power to activate profound religious experiences that in turn shape other identities. She explores nationalism in Western Indian Hindu temple performance, gendered translation in Indian Jewish song, diasporic longing in Indo-Caribbean American Hinduism, and rural-urban collisions in the devotional songs of an Indian classical singer. More recently, she has begun turning her attention toward issues of race and migration in American popular musics. Her first book, Singing a Hindu Nation: Marathi Devotional Performance and Nationalism, was published by Oxford University Press in 2013, and her second book, Songs of Translation: Bene Israel Gender and Textual Orality, is also under contract with OUP. With Sumanth Gopinath, she was awarded the H. Colin Slim Award by the American Musicological Society for the article, "Sentimental Remembrance and the Amusements of Forgetting in Karl and Harty's "Kentucky."" Dr. Schultz's research has been supported by fellowships from Fulbright-Hays, the American Council of Learned Societies, the American Association of University Women, the Hellman Foundation, the Hadassah-Brandeis Institute, the University of Illinois, and Stanford University.

Carolyn Quinn has family links to Felixstowe, a place she's visited frequently over the years, enjoying walks along the Edwardian seafront, soaking up its old world charm. For Open Country she returns to take a closer look at this Suffolk town, including how it's been shaped by the enormous presence of Felixstowe Port, the largest container port in the UK. She begins her journey with David Gledhill at Felixstowe Museum who gives a quick overview of the richly historic area. From there she walks round the corner to Landguard Nature Reserve, overlooked by the port's enormous cranes. Ranger, Leonie Washington, shows her the reserve's internationally important habitat of vegetated shingle. It supports species like the incredibly rare Stinking Goosefoot and provides habitat for ground-nesting birds like the ringed plover. Next, Carolyn pops on a hard-hat and enters the Port itself, where Paul Davey shares some facts and figures about this bewilderingly huge place. Then it's onto the Wildlife Trust's Trimley Marshes reserve. It was created to replace habitat destroyed when the Port expanded around 30 years ago. Carolyn asks Andrew Excell whether this wetland habitat makes up for the lost mudflats. And finally, the seaside holiday scene: Billy Butlin opened an amusement park here in 1931 and later sub-let it to showman and entrepreneur, Charlie Manning, who renamed it Manning's Amusements. Charlie's grandsons, Charlie Jr and Jonny, still run it but have also established Beach Street, where traders operate out of - what else - repurposed shipping containers. Carolyn meets Jonny and his mother, Sarah, who shares memories of the early days. Andy and Brendan are live(ish) from the Masters press building with this quick(ish) episode on the first round from Augusta National. They discuss the three leaders, beginning with Brooks Koepka and the potential cheating scandal with caddies signaling clubs to one another in the group. They then move to Viktor Hovland, and react to his round after watching a truly horrifying short-game practice session up close in the morning. Amusements from run-ins with Sandy Lyle and Larry Mize are also relayed. There's searing blowback for the player moaning about the lengthening of the 13th tee and threats of laying up. There's another thirstbucket given out and a couple harmless unsubstantiated rumors passed along. They close by emptying out the notebook with some sights and sounds from the day.

Adam Marriott, owner and operator of A & M Amusements in Maryville and St. Joe was our guest on the Breakfast Club this morning. Adam talked about about a few changes coming up concerning the snowie shaved ice which he offers at events, the large number of attractions the business has and some changes which he hopes to implement in the future.

Amusements have been, quite literally, a game-changer for Cicis. This week's episode of the Restaurant Business podcast A Deeper Dive features Jeff Hetsel, the president of the 300-unit pizza buffet chain. Cicis has had a strong performance coming out of the pandemic, with sales up 14.5% last year, according to Technomic. One of the big reasons is video games. The company has been convincing operators to expand their game rooms from the eight games they used to have to much larger rooms with prizes and token cards. That has been a major sales boost for the company. Hetsel talks about just how much of a sales lift video games can have for an individual operator. What's more, that sales lift is far more profitable than the sale of pizzas. Hetsel touches on other topics, including other drivers behind the company's sales increase.

Kristin graduated from Seton Hall University with her BA in Communication and Graphic Design and earned her MA in Public Relations and Advertising from Rowan University.
