#472: Imagine this: You're a teenage musical prodigy, a world-class classical French horn player. You drop out of college at age 19 and spend your twenties touring the globe as a musician (including, once, tripping and falling off the stage at Carnegie Hall). At age 31, you retire from your musical career, get a Ph.D., and become a professor – first at Syracuse and then at Harvard, where you teach both at Harvard Business School and at the Harvard Kennedy School. You publish 13 books and write a column for The Atlantic, which gets noticed by Oprah Winfrey. Oprah then invites you to dinner, where she asks you to co-author a book together. This is the life of today's guest, Harvard Professor Arthur Brooks, whose collaboration with Oprah, a book called Build the Life You Want, focuses on the science and research behind happiness. Brooks teaches a class on leadership and happiness to second-year Harvard MBA candidates. In our conversation, we discuss a range of topics, including metacognition (thinking about how to think), the neurobiological basis of ruminating, and how to balance the concept of contentment with the innately human urge for ambition and progress. He also offers a formula for happiness: enjoyment + satisfaction + meaning and purpose. So – I hope you enjoy this episode; I hope you find it satisfying, and I hope it fills you with meaning and purpose! – Paula For more information, visit the show notes at https://affordanything.com/episode472 Learn more about your ad choices. She is a tenured biology professor at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). Dr. Kurle teaches hundreds of UCSD students every year. Working with these remarkable people helped inspire her to write The Guidance Groove as numerous truly outstanding, brilliant, hard-working, and beautiful UCSD students struggle with feelings of inadequacy, obligation, scarcity, and unworthiness and exhibit many of the behaviors that stem from adherence to the Unproductive Grooves detailed in her book. We never quiet our minds completely, but we can learn to recognize when our false thoughts steer our choices, then choose instead to act from a place of authenticity. Then, we can navigate life from a place of authentic wholeness, and ease, contentment, and joy will naturally arise. We dive into: [0:50] What does happiness mean to Carolyn [3:42] How do we figure out what our truth is versus the noise and influence of other people [11:25] How can you overcome the fear motivators in your life [17:53] Learning to tune in to our truth through our biology [24:02] Signs we can look for that we're trusting our inner voice [30:39] Tangible ways of getting over the fear and judgment that comes from living as your true self [41:18] A peak into Carolyn's book and 1 key takeaway from it [46:24] How can someone create a little more happiness each day starting today Resources: Podcast Resources: https://www.simonacostantini.com/resources Apply to be a podcast guest: https://forms.gle/WtXHsqZmiEhCwTAk6 Connect with Carolyn https://www.guidancegroove.com/ http://www.carolynkurle.com/ Book: The Guidance Groove: Escape Unproductive Grooves, Trust Your Intuition, and Be True https://www.linkedin.com/in/carolyn-kurle-6b343821b/ Connect with Simona www.instagram.com/simona__costantini www.instagram.com/costantiniproductions www.instagram.com/happinesshappenspodcast https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCXtOxOAuXxW7c5cYKdAEfWg https://twitter.com/simona_cos https://www.facebook.com/costantiniproductions https://www.facebook.com/happinesshappenspodcast/ www.simonacostantini.com

Today we have certified Tiny Habits coach Julie Delucca Collins sharing her tips for happiness habits, tune in to see how these tiny habits really do add up. Transcript: Hey there, you're listening to Everyday Happiness with Katie Jefcoat. But today I'm Julie DeLucca-Collins taking over. And I am here to tell you the one thing and the one habit that helps me feel great. And this is again, all tiny habits add up. One of the things that I like to tell people is that consistent action gets you traction. If you are thinking that little things are not going to matter, I encourage you and challenge you to really dispel that belief because the compounding effect is real. Today I want to talk about water and why water matters. Water is something that can also create other habits, because little habits are like plants. When you start a plant, it can really grow from there and it can spread. So even though water may not seem like a big deal, if you are drinking water, this is something that can help you feel hydrated, energized, happier and may inspire you to also pick the salad as opposed to the french fries. So start small and you will see the change in your life and you will also feel proud of having this little habit in your life. So for me, it's daunting to be able to drink a lot of water. When I think about having to drink half of my body weight in water, I could never do it because again, that's having to rely on motivation. So for that reason, I pick the moment, I pick the action in my life that happens every single day. And for me that is letting my dogs out. So when I let my dogs out every morning, my tiny habit is I fill my water, my water bottle, and I'm not going for drinking it right then and there, but I start with that tiny habit and then when I see the water filled and it's sitting next to me, then I chug. And every time I chug, I'm going to have to go to the bathroom. And when I go to the bathroom, then I drink some more water. So I have these anchor moments, letting the dogs out, etc. But ultimately you want to make sure that you are giving yourself credit for what you're doing. Hydrate, because when you feel better, then you can show up in the world better. I am so happy and thanks for listening to me all week. Catch another episode of Everyday Happiness tomorrow. P.S. Today we have certified Tiny Habits coach Julie Delucca Collins sharing her tips for happiness habits, tune in to see how these tiny habits really do add up. Transcript: Hey there, you're listening to Everyday Happiness with Katie Jefcoat. But today, I'm Julie DeLucca-Collins taking over. I want to talk to you today about something that we all do and that probably creates a low level stress for all of us. I want to create some thoughtful, mindful and grateful ways for you, and we've talked about this already. For you to be able to manage email. Email is something that we can't escape. It's part of our world now, but a lot of times many of us associate overwhelm when we're checking email. So I'm going to give you one of my Tiny Habits that allows me to then be able to be happier when it comes to having email in my life. Number one, I create some Intentional Margins®, like my friend Katie has taught me. I don't check email outside of the times that I've allocated in my schedule to be checked. That's number one. So second is when I check email first thing in the morning, I only check it for maybe whatever time I've allocated. But here is the big one. And this is my tiny habit. After I have my time up with email, I close it out. I don't keep email open throughout the day. One, because it helps me be more productive. Did you know that every time you get a distraction from what you are doing, you could lose about 17 minutes and it will take you to get back into whatever form of concentration you are in. So for this reason, my tiny habit when it comes to email is after I check email in my designated times, I close the program and then I celebrate -- yay go me, I close out email. And this forces you to be more intentional when you're checking your email and focus on what matters. So I am here all week, see you tomorrow everybody for another episode. P.S. Today we have certified Tiny Habits coach Julie Delucca Collins sharing her tips for happiness habits, tune in to see how these tiny habits really do add up. Transcript: Hey there! You are listening to Everyday Happiness with Katie Jefcoat. But today I'm Julie DeLucca-Collins and I am taking over. I am talking about Tiny Habits and how you can incorporate tiny habits into your life to create the type of life that you want and increase your happiness overall. Yesterday we talked about gratitude and today I want to talk about mindfulness. Because mindfulness is something that many of us forget or are not sure how to even incorporate into our life. So the one thing that I'm going to share with you is that you don't have to sit and meditate for hours or breathe or do a lot of that. You can be going about your life and doing the everyday mundane stuff that then allows you to create a little bit of mindfulness. In the afternoon, I typically have some tea and after I boil my water, then this is my mindfulness moment and this is my tiny habit. While I am pouring the water into my cup, I really become aware and I watch the water and I use all of my senses to pay attention. I look at the water begin to change color as it hits the tea bag. And then I notice as I pour my little bit of honey into the tea and I bring that tea up to my nose and I smell it and I sit in that moment and really pay attention. And after I create that intentional creation of my tea and I make my tea and that mindful moment in which I pay attention, I give myself a smile and I say, oh, I spend some moments in mindfulness. So I want you to find time throughout your day. What are different things that you do? Maybe you pour yourself coffee or maybe when you get into your car, whatever it is, find the time to create mindfulness with the moments in which you are already doing things in your life and then celebrate for it. I'm so glad you're here and see you tomorrow for another episode. I am here all week to talk about tiny habits. P.S. Getting brilliant advice from the right people with the right information to share when it comes to health and energy is one thing. But when that right person is just exuding joy and vitality it sure is the icing on the (metaphoric, of course) cake that makes you want to go right ahead and embrace that knowledge. Well, it's fair to say Dr. Libby Weaver sure is that kind of person and having this conversation with her was beyond brilliant as she shared some wisdom around everything from being emotionally responsible and having awareness on what we are missing when we 'outsource' our nutrition by way of seemingly 'healthy' convenience and takeaway foods, to quitting sugar (oh dear, I've signed up for her upcoming course) and addressing chronic underconsumption of calories and the psychology around reverse dieting. There's also some serious gold in here for those who are at or nearing menopause. It's fair to say I have deemed Dr. Libby another podcasting bestie of mine. Enjoy! DR.
