Riva and her husband, Bob, came aboard as franchisees in 1990 and opened five of their own Pizza Factory locations. In 2012, the founders were ready to leave and sold the company to the Rivas."The culture of Pizza Factory is so much about community and it's individuals being able to come and work in a town or a city. Some of our stores are in really small towns, so it allowed people who wanted to be self-employed and live in a small town and actually accomplish that," Riva said.Pizza Factory connects with its communities with owner/operators who are residents of the towns their shops are in.The brand was recently acquired by Wonder Franchises. "After 12 years, it can to a point where I knew it was time to bring on some extra resources," Riva said. "Another set of eyes, and bring on that support system that I felt that as an office and for the franchisees, really we are the steward of the brand. The franchisees are who we work for, and I felt that is was time to bring on another set of eyes and that youthfulness."With rapid changes in social media, digital and tech stacks, Wonder will help Pizza Factory into the future. "Bringing them on was one of the ways I felt we could support the franchisees better as well as accelerate growth."Listen to the podcast to learn more about Pizza Factory and Wonder Franchises future. Look Under The Hood - Great Quotes in Franchising

Today's Great Quote in Franchising Comes from Mary Jane Riva, CEO of Pizza Factory. Mary Jane suggests aspiring entrepreneurs need to look under the hood before buying a franchise. Listen to this podcast to find out why. Partial Transcript Well, first, there are a couple of things. And one that as we're going through this journey ourselves from being a franchisee to the franchisor, it's understanding the roles of the franchisor versus the franchisee. That's important; what role are you playing versus the franchisor? And then, when you're looking at brands, the other thing for brands to me is really looking under the hood. Don't just look at all the stuff on the surface; dig down and see what extra charges there, you know, are they marking up stuff, you know, really evaluate a brand to a brand and not just the fluff kind of stuff you see on the top. And it's a lot of due diligence. But you know, ask the questions that will be once you're in there, you know, are they marking up the food product? Are they marking up advertising materials? You know, what are you paying? So, dig down and ask many more questions, and I would talk to many franchisees in the system and see how they feel about the franchisor and the brand itself. I would do a lot of due diligence with franchisees because they're the ones that are going to tell you.

The Fast Casual Nation Podcast offers exclusive interviews with experts ranging from top chefs and brand makers to executives and restaurants who work in one of the fastest-growing segments of the restaurant industry. In this episode, I talk with Mary Jane Riva, chief executive officer and president of the Pizza Factory about growing the brand and the importance of community. Riva has been in the industry for more than thirty years. She worked in a donut shop at 16 years old, which led to owning her own shop. Riva got into pizza with her husband and became a franchisee for Pizza Factory for twenty-four years. In 2012 Riva became the CEO of the brand that has over 100 locations across the country. Riva says, “Over our time in Southern California, we ended up opening about five stores and then fast forward to 2012 when the founders asked us if we would like to buy the company.” She goes on to say that what she likes most about being an entrepreneur is the idea of not knowing what everyday will be like and how it will not be the same. “So it's kind of exciting, challenging, so that's what really kind of kept me in this business,” Riva adds. Riva's experience as a franchisee helped her transition into becoming a franchisor. The Pizza Factory franchisees had trust and offered support as she stepped into her new role. She says, “And I think the biggest thing was probably the easiest for them to accept about the whole thing was that they knew I was a franchisee, they knew I knew exactly what they were going through, and I still have stores.” We talk about the importance of community and Riva shares that the founders started back in 1985 and their idea was to go into small towns and be a part of it, work in it and support that community. Riva says, “As a company, we also take on some initiatives in addition to what our stores do and our stores do amazing things in their communities. Our franchisees are so giving and so involved in their communities. We have the anti bully program, we work with No Kid Hungry and we're starting with One Tree Planted. So being a part of the community we just feel is the right thing to do and ultimately, you get what you give. And if you are supporting your community, they're going to support you back.” To hear Riva talk about growth plans for the Pizza Factory and her top three tips for franchisee satisfaction check out this episode of Fast Casual Nation or tune in on Apple Podcasts.

For over 30 years, Pizza Factory has stayed true to its roots. Hardworking owners and staff, family-friendly dining, and a high-quality product make them who they are. They take great pride in the smile that the first bite of their pizza brings to the faces of their guests and they strive to make everyone feel as if this is their hometown pizzeria. Their motto says it all:  “We Toss'em, They're Awesome” —hand-tossed pizzas that are simply the best. Each bubbly, cheesy pie is made with 100% real mozzarella cheese and their signature sauce.  It's hard to say what makes it so delicious: the dough, the sauce, or is it the fresh toppings? Or is it all of the above.  Mary jane RIva, Pizza Factory CEO "and" multi-unit franchisee, is here to discuss all of that and more.  Mary Jane Riva became president and chief executive of the Oakhurst, Calif.-based Pizza Factory in September 2012, after she and her husband, Bob Riva, acquired the Pizza Factory Inc. franchising system from founders Daniel and Carol Wheeler and Ronald Willey.  But, she was a Pizza Factory franchisee, well before then.  In fact, the Rivas have owned Pizza Factory restaurants as franchisees for nearly 33 years and continue to do so to this very day.  Always focused on unit level economics and franchisee success, Pizza Factory recently introduced a new, streamlined express model, to service the growing off-premise market segment, in addition to their larger foot print, dine-in restaurants.    QSR has already heralded the brand as the next big thing in pizza.  Mary Jane Riva, this week on Franchise Today.

Mary Jane (MJ) Riva, CEO of Pizza Factory has an interesting 3-prong approach to roadblocks, obstacles and failure.   Failure to MJ is just another word for learning and developing character. MJ acknowledges we are all flawed human beings and is unapologetically herself.   MJ consciously weighs out whether the business is running her or if she is running the business. This allows her to take stock of what is truly important and if her commitments are in alignment.   When an obstacle presents itself MJ checks her inner compass. She does this by turning to God through prayer and reflection to determine if she is on purpose and using her talents wisely. This allows her to be at peace with present situations as well as an unknown future.    Listen in to an authentic and wisdom filled interview with MJ on this episode of The Franchise Woman podcast: Where Passion & Purpose Collide.

Through her experiences and learning on both sides, Mary Jane Riva, CEO at Pizza Factory, is able to resolve conflicts between the franchisor and the franchisee by meeting halfway through proper communication and transparency. Tune in to our podcast today for more exciting learnings on building good relationships with your franchisee.“I think the best place to start is being a franchisee and coming into this position as an executive. How much I learned so much on the other side that I was never privy to because I wasn't in the corporate structure that way. On that part, it was an opportunity to be more vocal and transparent on the other side, being the franchisor side to the franchisees, really opening it up more and explaining or telling or giving the whys. Why do we do it this way? Why this, why that?Yes, the butting the heads - I do that with myself. If I had 2 heads, they would be butting together sometimes. I have such a feel for the franchisee side because my husband and I still have 4 stores. There are varying issues just like everybody else.I really come into the corporate meetings with that hat on and presenting another side when I feel that it really needs to be – maybe explored a little bit more, at least, what's going on for the franchisees.”

Currently, there are more than 100 locations based in five states throughout the West Coast. Pizza Factory looks to add additional franchise locations in key markets throughout the country, with a special focus on Texas, Colorado, New Mexico, Wyoming and Montana.  In Part Two, we play a clip from our popular Great Quotes in Franchising podcast. "People are moving fast, but the bottom line is, they want to be able to sit down with their family and let their hair down and let their kids go. I believe community is all about that. And if you're going to go into a community, you should be part of it." - Mary Jane Riva, president & CEO, Pizza Factory This week on Franchise Today, Pizza Factory president & CEO, Mary Jane Riva joins co-hosts Stan Friedman and Paul Segreto to discuss how she went from owning five locations as a franchisee to franchisor.
