Al James and Annemarie Rivers discuss moving from “principle (theology/belief) to practice” in youth and children's ministry, arguing against copying what's always been done or what merely “works” and instead letting biblical and theological convictions guide intentional, reflective decisions. They outline their "thinking framework": start with a biblical/theological framework, bring in new knowledge (e.g., research, development, culture) in dialogue with Scripture, then assess context, current practice, and move toward “better practice” (the best fit for a particular context rather than universal “best practice”). They explain how using this framework over time forms a ministry philosophy—articulated principles that justify and shape ministry choices—highlighting Youthworks' seven principles and offering tests for writing good principles (truth-statement form, not too broad/narrow, risk-aware, applicable, avoiding “should” language).Register For House - Anchored and Adaptable House Conference is happening the 25-27th August 2026 and will be on a Theology of Contextualisation with Mike Dicker (Principal at Youthworks College) and Derek Brotherson (Principal at Sydney Missionary and Bible College)Register here: youthworks.net/house Connect with YouthworksClick through to discover more about the Youthworks Ministry Support Team and how Youthworks can help you have an effective youth and children's ministry in your local church, or check out our Facebook Page. You can connect with the broader Youthworks family by clicking here. You can partner in the ministry of Youthworks by donating here.We would love to hear from you! Preaching and Youth Ministry: Why the Preached Word Still Matters In this episode of the Effective Ministry Podcast, host Josh interviews The Rev Dr Tom Habib, a Moore Theological College lecturer and coordinator of the John Chapman Preaching Initiative. They trace preaching through Scripture: Deuteronomy as Moses' covenant sermon; the prophets' role in proclaiming the written word; Jesus as the promised prophet and preacher; and the apostolic pattern, culminating in Timothy being commanded to “preach the word.” They discuss preaching versus teaching, the need for both reading and preaching, the strengths and weaknesses of talks and Bible studies in youth groups, and practical models combining a short talk with discussion. Mission trips and service projects can be meaningful for students—but planning them well takes more than good intentions. Brad M. Griffin chats with Carlos Piñero of YouthWorks and youth leaders Dick Lee and Jen Bradbury about why mission trips still have value in youth ministry today, and what the caveats are to that statement! They share real-world examples of some of their best practices from over the years, and what they are continuing to learn. This season explores mission trips, or service trips, and why they can still be a really valuable part of youth ministry. But the key, as we hear from youth pastors and ministry leaders, is that planning them well takes more than good intentions. Episodes in this season will explore cultural humility, alternative ideas to a trip, and how to process a trip with your students. This season is brought to you by the On-The-Go Youth Leader resources Faith & Mission Collection (Discussion Guides, Prayer Activities, Youth Leader Guides), and created through support from Tenx10. Rev. Polly Butterworth, a Sydney high school chaplain, shares about her new role as Schools Ministry Development Officer for the Sydney Anglican Diocese, created to better support Anglican school ministry workers. She outlines five aims: pastoral support and mentoring networks for chaplains, strengthening partnerships between schools and churches, improving training and recruitment pathways for chaplains and Christian studies teachers, sharing resources across schools, and supporting professional development through the Sydney Anglican Schools Ministry Association. Polly explains why school–church partnership matters for long-term discipleship beyond school and discusses key barriers (especially time, mismatched schedules, and lack of ideas). She offers practical partnership ideas such as sharing speakers, prayer support and prayer points, church involvement in lunchtime groups and Bible studies, shared events, and cross-promotion, encouraging perseverance and patient, prayerful support.00:00 Welcome and Guest Intro02:05 Polly's New Diocese Role02:52 Five Goals for Chaplain Support04:32 Sharing Resources and PD Network08:27 How the Role Came About13:26 Polly's Path into Chaplaincy16:58 Vision for School Church Partnerships21:20 Schools as a Temporary Faith Community22:46 Church Discipleship Depth23:43 Why Partnership Matters24:41 Survey Shows Willingness25:47 Time And Scheduling Barriers27:04 Making Space For Partnership28:45 Idea Fatigue And Brainstorming30:53 Practical Partnership Ideas35:28 Shared Events And Promotion37:01 When Efforts Stall41:54 How Churches Can Support45:00 Contact And Wrap UpConnect with YouthworksClick through to discover more about the Youthworks Ministry Support Team and how Youthworks can help you have an effective youth and children's ministry in your local church, or check out our Facebook Page. You can connect with the broader Youthworks family by clicking here. You can partner in the ministry of Youthworks by donating here.We would love to hear from you! We're thinking about how to make the most of when kids are in the room for church gatherings. In this episode of the Effective Ministry Podcast, Meaghan Gates, Adam Joliffe, and Al James share some simple, practical “low-hanging fruit” to help include children and young people meaningfully. We start with a core conviction: kids aren't the “future church”—they're full members of the body of Christ right now. From there, we reflect on how we can unintentionally “other” children, especially through the way we speak, and how small shifts in language can make a big difference. We talk about using accessible (simple, not simplistic) language, speaking directly to children rather than about them, and giving equal weight to both the main gathering and kids' programs when children are dismissed. We also highlight the importance of celebrating children's contributions as genuine ministry, not performance. When it comes to preaching, we share a range of practical ideas to help engage all ages—things like creating multiple entry points through sermon sheets, using clear prompts and simple challenges tied to the big idea, incorporating visuals, building in short discussion moments, and intentionally resetting attention throughout the sermon. If you're planning for Easter—or any all-age gathering—these are ideas you can pick up and put into practice straight away.Timestamps 00:00 — Easter and all-age services 01:35 — Meet the hosts 02:27 — Why kids belong in the church now 03:41 — How language shapes culture 06:35 — A story of preacher anxiety 08:07 — Simple, not simplistic 11:13 — Speaking directly to children 13:51 — Valuing kids' church alongside the main gathering 15:09 — Celebrating ministry, not performance 18:18 — Praise as ministry 18:45 — Building momentum for kids serving 20:48 — Preaching: low-hanging fruit 22:48 — Sermon sheets and access points 25:22 — Using a simple “challenge” hook 27:38 — Visuals and interaction 30:13 — Re-engaging attention 33:09 — Building a culture of welcome over time 34:27 — Key takeaways and wrap-upConnect with YouthworksClick through to discover more about the Youthworks Ministry Support Team and how Youthworks can help you have an effective youth and children's ministry in your local church, or check out our Facebook Page. You can connect with the broader Youthworks family by clicking here. You can partner in the ministry of Youthworks by donating here.We would love to hear from you! Kicking off the 2026 Effective Ministry podcast, Al James and Annemarie Rivers discuss how ecclesiology (the theology of the church) shapes youth and children's ministry, asking whether youth group, kids' church, and afterschool clubs are “church.” Drawing on Chase Kuhn's work (including discussion of Donald Robinson, Broughton Knox, Kevin Giles, and Graham Cole), they explore church as the gathering (ecclesia) created by God's word, centered on hearing and responding in faith, and focused on building up God's people. They consider the gathered and scattered nature of church, the distinction between earthly intermittent gatherings and the constant singular heavenly church, and why the heavenly church's oneness implies diversity. They discuss Robinson's claim that the church's primary task is not evangelistic, how evangelism still occurs in and from the gathering, and Kuhn's conclusions that age-specific ministries are valid but not ideal expressions of church, requiring integration and intergenerational discipleship.Connect with YouthworksClick through to discover more about the Youthworks Ministry Support Team and how Youthworks can help you have an effective youth and children's ministry in your local church, or check out our Facebook Page. You can connect with the broader Youthworks family by clicking here. You can partner in the ministry of Youthworks by donating here.We would love to hear from you! She opens up about the challenges of carrying emotional burdens, the comfort she finds in prayer, and the privilege of pointing people to Christ—even indirectly.Outside of chaplaincy, Megan finds joy and mental health benefits in climbing, music, and being part of a supportive community. We also hear about her training at Youthworks, her path into community services and social work, and her vision of working with kids, families, and mental health in the future.

This is part one of a two-part conversation with Valerie O'Brien from Aspen Ministry. In this episode of the Effective Ministry Podcast, host Al James sits down with Val to talk about her journey into youth ministry and her latest initiative, the 10,000 Questions Project.Val, a native of Cleveland, Ohio, has spent more than 15 years serving in student ministry through the local church—walking with families, discipling students, and leading teams. More recently, she transitioned into a parachurch role where she has trained and coached youth leaders across the US and around the world, helping them build disciple-making ministries patterned after the life of Jesus.Out of that experience grew the 10,000 Questions Project, which seeks to gather and reflect on the countless real questions that young people have about life, faith, God, and the world. Rather than brushing those questions aside, the project gives us a window into what's really on students' hearts and minds, and helps churches listen and respond with honesty and hope.In this first part of our conversation, Val shares her path into ministry, the story behind the 10,000 Questions Project, and what she's been learning along the way. Then in a shorter follow-up episode in two weeks, we'll get practical and discuss how to create youth ministry environments where asking questions isn't just allowed, but encouraged. This is a valuable conversation for youth workers, parents, and anyone passionate about discipling the next generation.Aspen Ministry Find out more about Val's work and the 10,000 Questions Project at aspenministry.org.Connect with Youthworks Click through to discover more about the Youthworks Ministry Support Team and how Youthworks can help you have an effective youth and children's ministry in your local church, or check out our Facebook Page. Good and faithful youth ministry can look very different from context to context, and yet we often define “What is youth ministry” by the form it takes rather than the essence. Today we're going to talk about contextualization with Mike Dicker from YouthWorks College in Sydney, Australia. What is contextualization and why is it important? What is "divine accomodation" and can you point to any examples of contextualization in the Bible? You've proposed four steps for faithful contextualization in youth ministry. Could you give us a quick overview of the four steps, and then we can go through them together in a bit more detail? What recommendations do you have that are particular to youth ministry? As youth workers strive towards contextualization, the temptation is to think first about our preaching… but we need to apply contextualization to the gospel culture of our ministry. What does that mean and how do we establish a gospel culture? ABOUT THIS EPISODE: The next Women in Youth Ministry Conference is coming up, and our Conference Team asked that I publish the keynotes from last year so that you all could get a glimpse of what is in store. As I relistened to Erica's keynote, I kept thinking about how this keynote embodies the theme of this year's conference: how do we find hope, even though the last few years have robbed us of our joy? ABOUT ERICA: Erica Schimelpfenig has spent the past 20 years at YouthWorks in many different roles. In her current role as President, Erica gets to live out her passion of pointing teenagers toward God through service experiences that broaden perspectives and help develop lifelong passions. Erica lives in Minneapolis, MN with her husband, Cody and their 3 kids. ABOUT YOUTHWORKS: YouthWorks provides Christ-centered mission trips for thousands of teenagers and adult leaders in communities across the U.S. and beyond. Click here for more information! Conversations don't have to be confrontations. They can simply be honest, transparent, and vulnerable dialogue. But how do you create conditions for productive discussions? Simple. You come to the table ready to listen and learn something new about the other person. And you come without the need to prove a point. This week on Episode 10 of Square Peg Round Hole, I invite you into an authentic conversation I had recently with my friend and colleague, Erica Schimelpfenig, President of YouthWorks. Erica and I began this discussion a couple of years ago, and I have been anxious to return to the dialogue ever since—because I want to understand her point of view.As you'll hear, Erica and I come from two different worlds. She is a woman of color. And I am a white man. But we share a similar outcome and objective—to make sure no one feels alone. So Listen if you want your thoughts challenged. Listen if you want to hear transparent points of view. Listen if you want to make our planet a better place for people to live!Send us a text message. We'd love to hear from you! Thanks for listening.
