Good and faithful youth ministry can look very different from context to context, and yet we often define “What is youth ministry” by the form it takes rather than the essence. Today we're going to talk about contextualization with Mike Dicker from YouthWorks College in Sydney, Australia. What is contextualization and why is it important? What is "divine accomodation" and can you point to any examples of contextualization in the Bible? You've proposed four steps for faithful contextualization in youth ministry. Could you give us a quick overview of the four steps, and then we can go through them together in a bit more detail? What recommendations do you have that are particular to youth ministry? As youth workers strive towards contextualization, the temptation is to think first about our preaching… but we need to apply contextualization to the gospel culture of our ministry. What does that mean and how do we establish a gospel culture? This week we delve into the complex and essential topic of the doctrine of sin, as a taster for the upcoming House Conference organized by Youthworks, August 27th-29th. Hosted by Al James, the discussion features insights from committee members and youth and children's minister who explore the nature of sin, its impact on relationships with God and others, and its significance in youth and children's ministry. The episode emphasizes the importance of understanding sin as both a state of the world and personal culpability, the necessity of nuanced teaching about sin, and the liberating truth of grace that accompanies an accurate understanding of sin. It also highlights the practical implications for ministry and the importance of approaching the topic with wisdom, and a robust theological framework to navigate the conversations about sin in a way that is both truthful and liberating for young believers.Connect with YouthworksClick on through to discover more about the Youthworks Ministry Support Team and how Youthworks can help you have an effective youth and children's ministry in your local church. You can connect with us on Facebook and partner in the ministry of Youthworks by donating here.We would love to hear from you. Conversations don't have to be confrontations. They can simply be honest, transparent, and vulnerable dialogue. But how do you create conditions for productive discussions? Simple. You come to the table ready to listen and learn something new about the other person. And you come without the need to prove a point. This week on Episode 10 of Square Peg Round Hole, I invite you into an authentic conversation I had recently with my friend and colleague, Erica Schimelpfenig, President of YouthWorks. Erica and I began this discussion a couple of years ago, and I have been anxious to return to the dialogue ever since—because I want to understand her point of view.As you'll hear, Erica and I come from two different worlds. She is a woman of color. And I am a white man. But we share a similar outcome and objective—to make sure no one feels alone. So Listen if you want your thoughts challenged. Listen if you want to hear transparent points of view. Listen if you want to make our planet a better place for people to live!Send us a text message. We'd love to hear from you! Thanks for listening.
