The last time was at the socially distanced outdoor gig at Grove Studios over the summer. Which was our first time seeing Bobby in the band. To get things rolling, I asked the fans how they discovered Nina and the Buffalo Riders. Brenda became a fan after seeing the band open for the Steepwater Band at HopCat in Detroit. Within a song, the hairs on her arms were standing up and she was asking “Who is this band?”. It was a happy chance to be there that night, but it made for a lasting love for Nina and the Buffalo Riders.ShiAnn met Nina and the Buffalo Riders through other local Detroit bands. One time was all it took to become a fan. She has been supporting them ever since.Marie became a fan from the moment of Nina’s conception. She knew her beautiful daughter had the gift of music when she heard her singing at age 2 to Whitney Houston. Marie and Noel (Nina’s dad) couldn’t believe what they were hearing. Noel would bribe Nina for a dollar to sing songs at family get togethers when she was little. Eventually, she started playing guitar and wowed the family with a flawless rendition of “American Pie” by Don McLean. One of Noel’s cousins suggested Nina play at an open mic night. Nina at the young age of 13 and escorted by her dad, played that open mic night and it set her on a course to pursue a life in music.Xlo had been scouting out venues in Detroit for artists involved with Soundproof Detroit to perform. After stopping in at the Rusted Crow in Detroit, Xlo heard Nina on stage and dug the music. Reaching out to network led Xlo into becoming a fan and eventually working with Nina to produce a video. Be sure to check out the rap, dance, and nerdcore of Soundproof Detroit. On the Road with Nina and the Buffalo RidersIn order to keep playing music, Nina and the Buffalo Riders have had to migrate south for the winter. They have been posting short videos of some of the fun along the way. I asked Nina, Bobby, and Joe what have been some favorite moments so far.For Nina, a favorite moment occurred in Asheville, NC on the day that Biden won the election. The band setup on the streets to perform and there were people out celebrating the election. One overly excited woman nearly ran over other folks with her baby stroller trying to get closer to listen to Nina and the Buffalo Riders. As Nina and the Buffalo Riders are getting to the end of the song “Wish I Could Stay” a woman runs up out of nowhere and starts dancing. She dances into the street and ends up laying back on the hood of a car. The car then drives away with the dancing woman resting on the hood.Every single moment of being out on the road has been awesome for Bobby. If he had to pick one favorite it would be meeting actor/comedian Peter Dante in Key West. He took them to various bars and bought drinks. He even sang “Bohemian Rhapsody” with the band at karaoke. Joe’s favorite moment was the first night in Asheville. The band setup across the street from a park. Once they started playing people gathered around at a safe distance. Seeing the joy on people’s faces that day and each day since have been a highlight. The entire band agrees. Nina added that it is clear that people are starving for live music and being able to play music for them has been awesome.Questions from the FansWe flipped the questions over to the fans. Noel jokingly asked if Nina has enough strings and batteries. This brought a round of laughs. Noel then asked if Nina and the Buffalo Riders have any new gigs. Nina mentioned that they are currently in the Fort Myers area of Florida. They have played gigs at the Pink Piano in Lakeland and gigs at the Lani Kai Island resort.Maria wanted to know what has been most difficult about playing shows right now. The key issue is parking the RV and permits. Most cities require a permit for musicians to play on the street. In some cases, the requirements include background checks and insurance. All of which makes it nearly impossible to play unless you have a gig with a venue that will support live music during these times. This isn’t to say that Nina and the Buffalo Riders haven’t tried to work outside these restrictions. They were able to play in Miami for one day. They even tried performing in a cemetery, but this was shutdown by the police. Evidently the groundskeeper was all for it, but not so much the city authorities.Get in the VanBrenda asked if Nina and the Buffalo Riders have any summertime gigs lined up for Michigan. Turns out they do. On June 19th at Campit Outdoor Resort in Saugatuck, Nina and the Buffalo Riders will be part of the annual Saugatuck LGBQ Festival. They hope that more shows will spring up as the warmer temperatures allow for outdoor shows again. In particular, looking to get some gigs at Tangent Gallery and in Utica. In the midst of a pandemic, a lot of folks don’t want to travel. And it makes sense; you may not feel safe at a motel or even an AirBnB. Xlo thinks the idea of hitting the road like NIna and the Buffalo Riders is inspiring. He wanted to know who came up with the idea to get an RV and head out of town.Bobby relayed that it was sort of happenstance. He was at a buddy’s house and his friend's dog jumped the fence. They ran to find the dog at a house with an RV in the driveway. Bobby mentions that he loves the RV and starts talking with the owner. Next thing you know, Bobby’s driving home with an RV.Maria and Noel hosted Nina and the Buffalo Riders at their house while the band worked on getting the RV ready for the road. They then set sail for the south in search of musical adventure. In mid-February, look for Nina and the Buffalo Riders to steer their van into New Orleans. Afterwards, they plan to head west into Texas, Colorado, and then back to Michigan. Eventually they would like to head out to Montana, then down south to New Mexico and Arizona. What Led to a Life in MusicI love to learn about the origin of an artist. I asked Nina and the Buffalo Riders what led them to seek out a life in music. Bobby was quick to answer that he has always loved music. The movie and the soundtrack to the Lion King was incredibly inspiring as a child. He would sing along to all the songs and loves them today. He never expected to be a musician. He attended Feral Fest in Michigan and that is where he met Nina and Joe. He was inspired by them and became great friends. Ultimately this led to Bobby becoming a member of the band he loves.Joe is fairly sure his great-grandparents met at a piano bar. His dad was a DJ and his mom played piano. Music has always been a part of Joe’s life. At the age of 14, Joe got to see Bob Weir live. The energy of the fans and the band was captivating. After dozens of failed projects, Joe joined a band that played at Feral Fest and Nina and the Buffalo Riders opened. He was completely blown away. He and Nina became fast friends. The project band that played at Feral Fest fell apart and Nina reached out to ask Joe to join. He had an opportunity in another band, but felt his passion stirred by the music of Nina and the Buffalo Riders. Today, Joe couldn’t be happier with his choice. When Nina was young, she loved the emotional power of artists such as Whitney Houston, Celine Dion, Mariah Carey, and Selena. She wanted to share that power with people through her voice. Once she started to play guitar Nina found singer-songwriters like Michelle Branch, Damien Rice, and Iron & Wine. From an early age, Nina has wanted to write and perform music. That drive carries forward today.New Music on the HorizonNina, Bobby, and Joe have been working with Mike (keyboards) and Oscar (guitar) to record new music. They have a five song EP ready and just need to get album art completed. Three songs were written in 2020. The other two are older songs that have seen plenty of live rotation, but have not previously made it into the recording studio. Nina is particularly excited for this release as both Joe and Bobby add in vocal harmonies. Sounds like this new album will be stellar. To engage with fans and provide them with an inside scoop, Nina and the Buffalo Riders will be launching a Patreon page. This will help the band make their music while giving fans some unique content to savor. In addition, be sure to check out Nina and the band on Twitch.Rounding out with a DreamFor our last topic of conversation, I asked everyone what would be their dream concert. For Nina, that dream concert would have been to see Janis Joplin, The Grateful Dead, and The Band when they toured by train on the Festival Express tour. Bobby would have loved to have seen Bob Markely. Ideally, Bob would have seen Bobby grooving on the djembe and invited him up on stage to jam with Wailers. Joe was super specific in wanting to see The Grateful Dead at the Springfield Creamery Benefit show in Veneta, Oregon on Aug 27, 1972.Maria’s dream concert is Aerosmith. Doesn’t matter if it's the current day or back in the 70’s. Rocking out with Steven Tyler and the boys will work. Noel would have loved to have seen Santana at Woodstock. Just talking about the power of that performance by Santana had us all wanting to be there.Prince and Michael Jackson in concert is the dream concert for Xlo. We all completely agree that it would have been amazing to see them both together on stage. Brenda had an incredible experience seeing Chris Cornell and feels the same about seeing Nina and the Buffalo Riders. So her dream concert would be Nina and the Buffalo Riders with Chris Cornell. Wow!

Crack Pies, CBD Burgers, and Charitable Chefs This week in food news is very drug-centric. Milk Bar has renamed its Crack Pie and Carls Jr. is releasing a 4/20 CBD Burger. Massimo Battura is working hard and feeding the homeless. After being slammed by critics for “Crack Pie” being offensive, Christina Tosi of Milk Bar has changed the foods name to Milk Bar Pie. Milk Bar is the second establishment this year to replace the phrase “crack” in their food, the first being HopCat, a large gastropub franchise in Michigan, they changed their “crack fries” to “galaxy fries”. The year is 2019, and even though the crack epidemic has softened up, there are still thousands of people addicted to crack, and it is not something to make light of. Source Fast Food Chain Carl’s Jr is releasing a CBD infused burger for one day to test it out and see if there is a demand. Tom predicted that a fast food chain would put a CBD infused item on their menu back in January. Carl’s Jr is only releasing the burger for 1 day(4/20, obviously) at one location(Denver, obviously) to see if it is something that they should pursue for the rest of the country. Source Massimo Battura was nominated as one of one Time Magazine’s 100 most influential people of 2019. He has started community kitchens all over the world that serve restaurant quality food and feed the homeless, refugees, and the food insecure. Feeding the food insecure is a big topic for this episode, as we interview Matt Jozwiak, the President of ReThink Food, an organization that dedicates themselves to feeding the food insecure. Source An Ode To The Red Sauce Joint This week Bon Appetit put together one of the most comprehensive pieces on Italian- American Cuisine. They titled their work Red Sauce America and put together over a dozen different articles addressing all sorts of Red Sauce culture from Six Degrees of Chicken Cutlets, to Everything You’ve Ever Wanted To Know about Rao’s, and even the History of Buca di Beppo Tom and I talk about our favorite Red Sauce joints, the difference between Italian and Italian-American food, and what how both of our death row meals are Red Sauce dishes. Tutto Bene translated to Everything Good, but more importantly, was the restaurant of my childhood. My father’s office was across the street from them and to this day is still probably where I’ve had the most meals of my life.  Chicken Parmigiana, Veal Scarparella, Veal Sorrentino, and of course the Baked Clams. Writing this has me salivating over the memories of dipping crunchy bread into the leftovers of the baked clam tray, the oil, lemon, butter, parsley, and breadcrumbs. This is a visceral experience that can only be replicated at Red Sauce joints In Italian Cuisine Pasta is not a side dish. It is its own course to be respected and appreciated. I think that this is something that Italian-American cuisine gets wrong. I understand how inexpensive pasta is, but to offer it as a complimentary side dish cheapens it.  Pasta’s potential is limitless and can go toe to toe with any type of dish. To quote The Big Night “Sometimes the spaghetti likes to be alone” Matt Jozwiak and Rethink Food Tackle The Problem of Food Waste in NYC Sign up to Subscribe and Donate to Rethink Food NYC According to Feeding America, there are 42 million people facing hunger in the United States, with 1.4 million being in New York City alone. Astonishingly, research shows about 40% of the food produced in America today goes to waste; this is equivalent to 70 billion tons. Our goal is to make sure the wholesome excess food gets to hungry mouths. Rethink Food NYC Inc is a non-profit organization working to recover nutritious excess food to provide low or no-cost meals to New York City families in need. They transform unused food from grocery stores, restaurants, events, and corporate offices into ready-to-eat, nutritiously dense meals that are delivered to local human service organizations in New York City. With the initiative to run a community kitchen, their top chefs can both serve their community while developing entrepreneurial and leadership skills to help students establish an education that they will carry with them into future careers. Rethink Food NYC Inc goes beyond meals by using food as the tool to promote poverty solutions, participate in nutrition education, and convene food policy events. After learning about the Rethink Food mission I reached out to its Founder and President Matt Jozwiak and asked if we could have him on for an interview. We lucked out and he came to visit us in Greenpoint to talk all about what Rethink Food is doing to help food insecurity in NYC. Besides being one of the most impressive people I have met, Matt is also one of the most impressive chefs. He has trained at Noma, Alinea, and most recently Eleven Madison Park. He and his team tackled all the issues of restaurant food waste and food insecurity one by one to develop Rethink Food. I asked Matt if he needs more volunteers, more restaurants to partner with, or anything else. He told me no, they just need more donations. So once again, support the end of food insecurity and donate to Rethink Food. Sign up to Subscribe and Donate to Rethink Food NYC

It's a sad day for Detroiters who were fan of the TV show of the same name. Comedy Central today opted against bringing the buddy comedy "Detroiters" back for a third season, co-star Sam Richardson announced via Twitter. On today's show, we wax nostalgic about the beloved but short-lived show. Jer speaks with David Demuth, president and CEO of Southfield-based Doner, the real-life ad agency that was the arch-nemesis of the show's fictional Cramblin Duvet advertising firm. How'd the show settle on Doner as its foil? Elsewhere, we report on the other news that has Detroit talking — that HopCat is doing away with its popular Crack Fries out of deference to the reality that crack is a horribly addictive drug that has devastated families and whole neighborhoods in places like Detroit. The actual fries and recipe will remain, however. Which leads us to talk about our favorite fries. Yes, our show today gets absurd, fast. Elsewhere, we run down: A new snow-plowing protocol in the notoriously under-plowed city of Detroit A planned expansion of Oakland Community College's downtown Royal Oak campus (the Daily Tribune has the full story) The Detroit auto show inks a seven-year deal keeping it at Cobo through 2026 And some holiday fun including Santa Claus, beer tasting and classic arcade video games are coming to the Fisher Building lobby on Saturday. 7-24-18 Tonight we're talking with Justin LeVaughn, who is the Quality Assurance and Quality Control Officer at Ethereal Brewing in Lexington, KY. Justin does the microbiological and sensory analysis there, and maintains their yeast stocks. Justin started home brewing beer about 10 years ago in college, and combined his formal biology training with the hobby. He fell into the mead world about 4-5 years ago, and was hooked. His main passions are carbonated session meads and metheglins, but he regularly brews big fruit and spice meads. He loves experimenting with weird flavor combinations, and setting up trails with different flavors. Currently he is planning mixed-fermentation trials in meads and cysers. Ethereal Brewing first opened its doors about 4 years in the iconic Distillery District in Lexington Kentucky. Ethereal focuses on variety of styles, most notably French and Belgian beer styles, as will as mixed-culture fermentations. Ethereal's motto is blending the lines between art and science, being a small microbrewery that combines the processes of scientific inquiry with the artisanal craft of brewing. Dougy Fresh takes the Pigs back to his home in Northern Michigan for the 1st in the Northern Michigan series as the boys take over the airwaves at Goodfellow's Grille on Mackinaw Island.  This episode also features Beard's Brewery from Petoskey, MI.  They had taken over the taps that evening just one day before their anniversary party at their own taproom the following day when they made the big announcement that they were expanding and moving to a bigger, well known spot in Petoskey.  This was our introduction to Beard's and we were not disappointed.  It was quickly and clearly recognized just why this young brewery was already growing.  J.C. Olmo of Goodfellow's joined the roundtable to tell us all about Goodfellow's and all it has to offer before mixing us some killer cocktails of his own which comes out in part two of this night to be released soon. We're not sure how Beard's Ben Slocum finds time to brew with everything he has going on, but we are sure glad he does.  He is just one of the team of fine brewers at Beard's putting out some delicious beer.  We struggled to find any fault with everything we sampled that evening.  We were so impressed at one point, we just sat in awe of the lacing still thick on a glass which had been sitting empty for more than 30 minutes. And as bourbon barrel aged lovers, we were ecstatic to be some of the first to be drinking their newest batch that was not being made available to the public til the following day.  And it was glorious.  It reminded us of another of our favorites out of Indy, Sanitarium, from The Bier Brewery.  Each unique in their own right, but both equally fantastic.  It was a thick, rich, chocolatey, bourbon delight in a glass.  We had such a good time we are already making plans to go back to the Island for the big Halloween bash hosted by Goodfellow's Grille in October.  Thank you again, Greg Klinger, for inviting us to this fine establishment where you'll find some of the best food and drinks in Mackinaw. Shout outs in this one to HopCat, a mutual favorite craft brew place of ours and our new friends Hail Danza! www.goodfelllowsrestaurant.com www.beardsbrewery.com

From how deleting your browsing history can get you nailed with an obstruction of justice charge to the ridiculous scariness of people in Colorado dying from the plague...yes...that plague...and on out to Hawaii banning non-compete agreements for IT workers and the impending fight the fireworks retailers are gearing up for over Chinese lanterns of all things and more, our opening segment covered the news and stories of the week that caught our eye.  We also chatted a bit about our upcoming event next week at Hopcat, our Pink Slip Party event next month at the Majestic...so listen in to make sure you're up to speed on everything going on. Our second segment dove in with one of core sponsors, Online Tech.  We had Yan Ness and Mike Klein, the co-CEOs of the company.  Yes, co-CEOs, which is an interesting approach in and of itself, but just barely scratches the surface of what Online Tech has going on.  From their approach to securing your data to providing a ton of white papers and resources to help you have the conversations you need to have about data security in your own organization, their site is a treasure trove of information about what they do and the industry as a whole.  Check them out at http://www.onlinetech.com/ In our third segment, we got to chat with long-time member of our group, consistent attendee at our events, and one of the best recruiters we've built a relationship with over the years, Andrea Kress.  She's with Lochbridge, one of the companies spun off of everything that went on with Compuware, so she's been around the block a few times and has some great insights to offer.  We chatted about the job market here in the metro Detroit area, tips and tricks for you to keep in mind while you're interviewing, what matters most to recruiters like her when it comes to evaluating candidates and more.  Check out Lochbridge at http://lochbridge.com/ In our fourth and final segment, we took a call from one of the organizers of this weekend's Windsor ComiCon.  With guests like Kevin Smith and a whole list of comic artists, film and tv guests, it's definitely worth taking a look at if you're looking to cross the border for a little fun this weekend.  Details can be found at http://windsorcomicon.com/ Then the usual banter and wrapping things up for the night, and episode 104 came to a close. From the (in our opinion) whackjobs opening a storefront downtown to sell t-shirts for the unbelievable price range of $150-198 (no, that's not a typo) to all of this week's fun and excitement with the Windows 10 release, and then of course a touch on Jared from Subway's scandal now involving a 16 year old girl and the sad reality of the report indicating that the University of Phoenix nationally has a 7.3% graduation rate...but a 19% student loan default rate...and it's even worse than that here in the metro Detroit area...we had plenty of topics to keep us going through the first segment and doubling back in the fourth.  We also touched on our upcoming events at Hopcat and The Majestic Theater, Podcast Detroit going through a major growth spurt and the open house we'd held right before our show started and more. Segment two was all about the Darton Group (who graciously forgave yesterday's typo), a company from down in Charlotte, North Carolina looking to expand their business here in the metro Detroit area.  Clint and Rochelle were great guests with a solid sense of humor...but also with a lot of business knowledge and a firm belief that networking is the way to go to find the right talent...so you know we like them a lot.  They also have some words of wisdom for you metro Detroit job seekers, so make sure you listen in, and check them out at http://dartongroup.com/ For our third segment, we hopped into chatting with Lucas and Corey, two thirds of the team behind VoxVii studios and The Rack Show.  We met these guys earlier in the year at the Midwest Media Expo, had a blast, have kept in touch, and it was time to have them in to talk about their video podcast, their intentions on getting back to "normal" podcasting, why you should check them out and more.  Always a lot of laughs with these guys...even if it did wind up resulting in a challenge for a tag team wrestling match throwdown to take place...   ...so listen into the chat, and catch them at https://www.facebook.com/therackshow Segment four, as always, was a wrap up of earlier topics and digging a little more into the week's stories.  Photos from the night and more below. Episode 95...and on our fifth episode from the new studio, we had a pretty packed room with guests covering all sorts of topics.  Open data in the city of Detroit and an upcoming hackathon to find better ways to use it.  Updates from our friends at Detroit Beer Press about their latest issue.  A check in nearly two years later with Batch Brewing Company on how things are going downtown.  A look at the state of the Detroit tech scene from the eyes of someone still in school and breaking into the industry. Don't forget you can get 10% off Squarespace's offerings by using discount code IT during the checkout process: http://www.squarespace.com/, and you can try QuickBooks for self-employed tryselfemployed.com/it And so, so much more... After our 1995 themed intro came to a close, our opening segment kicked off with a recap of our last event and information about our upcoming events, the depressing information that both The Goonies and Ferris Bueller's Day Off are now both thirty years old, the hilarious (to us) story about a member of ISIS posting a selfie that led to an airstrike less than 24 hours later, a very concerning tale about how the Red Cross spent over $500 million in Haiti after the terrible earthquakes there...and yet somehow managed to only build six houses, Gamestop's purchase of ThinkGeek's parent company, our lovely new kegerator stocked with the Scurvy Dan Blood Orange IPA from Falling Down Beer Company and more. In our second segment, we dove in with our guests David Lingholm, the Director of Digital Media and Community Engagement for the City of Detroit, and Erin Sommerville, Media Relations Specialist for Automation Alley.  There's a hackathon coming up this weekend, #Hack4Detroit, that's looking to find some better uses for the massive amounts of data that the city has accumulated over the years, and there's some decent prize money for those who can help.  Designers, coders, and even just folks with ideas are welcome...but the signup cutoff is Wednesday, so hurry: http://www.automationalley.com/Events/Calendar/Event-Detail.aspx?uniqueid=16840 In segment three, we checked in with our friends Courtney Ochab, Ian Burk and Tony Barchok from Detroit Beer Press and Stephen Roginson of Batch Brewing Company.  Batch Brewing was on waaaaaaaaay back in episode 10 of our show when they were a finalist (and eventual winner!) of the Hatch Detroit competition in 2013, and they've come a long way since then.  Not only are they open, but they're in full swing with production of a number of great beers, have a solid kitchen, and have a monthly "feel good tap" where a portion of the proceeds go to a local organization.  Can't beat that. Detroit Beer Press isn't doing to shabby either, with their latest issue in breweries, distilleries and locations throughout the area...which hypothetically might include another IT in the D style rant.  Updates about their Howler Club Membership program and more await your ears. In our fourth and final segment (no, still no infamous fifth segments in the new studio as of yet), we talked with Kevin Hill, a local guy still in college at RIT, and working his way into the Detroit tech scene.  We met Kevin at our Hopcat event back in May, and absolutely had to have him join us in-studio to continue that conversation on air.  He's got some great perspectives on how things look from his point of view - what he sees going well, going wrong, what works, what doesn't, and just a great take on things in general. And that brought us to a close.  Tune in next week as we're joined by Right Brain Networks to talk about DevOps among other topics, Make Moore Media to talk film and production, and Yum Village to talk about their group's organization and event. Don't forget you can get 10% off Squarespace's offerings by using discount code IT during the checkout process: http://www.squarespace.com/, and you can try QuickBooks for self-employed tryselfemployed.com/it Again,

With all of the chaos and excitement going on with our new studio, this one took a little bit to get out. Our apologies about that, but episode 90 marks a major milestone for us, and so we hope you enjoy it.  Self.Conference, women in technology, making a career change into I.T. ...all that and more. Episode 90 was a major milestone because it's the last time we're broadcasting from the Raw Radio X studio...starting this coming Monday night (May 11), we'll be broadcasting out of our own studio, and so how you listen live to us is changing.  It was an epic episode because we were joined by a whole bunch of awesome people who helped us wrap up our time at RRX properly, and covered some awesome topics along the way... Did I mention great guests? We had awesome guests. Nuri Gocay's been on the show a few times recently, and well, we like having him and his insights around.  Erika Carlson's been on our show a number of times over the past two years, and we simply can't get enough of her.  Elyse Lopez Turner is also a repeat offender, but this was her first time joining us after making a career transition from Marketing to Developer.  Kate Catlin has also been on the show with us before, and it's always a blast having her around.  Amber Conville was the only first-timer, but she handled herself awesomely in her debut. IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT: for those who listen live, this was our last broadcast out of the Raw Radio X studio.  Starting Monday, May 11th (this Monday), we will be broadcasting out of our FREAKING BRAND NEW STUDIO above Activ8 gaming in Ferndale. You can now listen to us live right here on our site. If you listen via TuneIn, you'll have to search for "IT in the D" as a station stream, because yes...we have our own station stream now.  We're very excited about this - look for a full announcement shortly. All of that and more can be found at http://www.itinthed.com/listen/how-to-listen/ Our first segment, as always, was about news, events, and though it's a bit dated at the moment, we chatted about our event this past Wednesday night at Hopcat.  It went really well, but it's in the past now, so keep an eye on our Events page to join us at a future event: http://www.itinthed.com/meet/  It was "Star Wars Day", so of course we talked Star Wars.  The new Avengers movie.  Stuff around the area and so much more. Segment two was all about Erika, Amber, and Self.Conference, an event taking place at the end of the month that you should absolutely make time for...and not just because they were cool enough to provide a discount code for our members and listeners.  Self.conference is a mix of fantastic tech presentations and insightful soft talks in fabulous downtown Detroit. They're filling two whole days at the end of May with mobile, web, hardware, software, process, and team talks to help you expand your knowledge, meet other technically-minded folk, and immerse yourself in Detroit's tech renaissance.  Check the event out at http://selfconference.org/, and you can use discount code "itinthed" or just follow this link: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/selfconference-2015-tickets-15432000529?discount=itinthed We talked with Elyse about her career transition from being a part of a marketing department to becoming a developer.  So, for those of you who think that simply can't be done...listen to what she has to say, because she's done it.  We've known Elyse for years, and it's been great seeing her make this transition and how much she's enjoying her new roles, challenges and opportunities.  Even though she hasn't updated her blog in about four months (yes, that's a dig), you can read about her journey at https://curlersandcode.wordpress.com/ Then we grilled Kate a little bit because she's leaving us and heading out west, and even though we gave her a bunch of crap, it's because we care and we'll miss her.  Listen in to hear about her adventures with Venture for America,

IT in the D, Episode 70 Well, this was certainly an interesting night, both on the mic and off of it. Let's stick to the on the mic fun though - we had some great guests join us in-studio tonight, and we even made a new friend from down the hall from the studio thanks to doing a little wandering and being friendly with the locals.  We got into some controversial topics, we got updates on a growing local business, and we talked with an artist about her work and figured out more ways to blow money on things that we absolutely have to have... In our opening segment, we talked about our charity event this past Thursday night, we ranted and vented a bit about the Hopcat opening, and we even explained some of what we really think is racist that goes on these days that nobody even thinks about for some reason. For our second segment, we dove in with some repeat guests - Terry from Original Stix and Pat from the Osirius Group to talk about how things have been going with Original Stix since we last chatted with them back in early June. Short answer?  They're blowing up like mad, expanding like crazy, and opening up new lines of business...all with locally manufactured products and top-notch customer service. Use discount code itinthed on their website - http://originalstix.com/ over the next week to get free shipping. We continued our chat with them in the third segment, talking about the growth they're experiencing, and some of the extremely cool new products they have coming soon for those who might want something other than hockey sticks in something like this. During the break after our third segment, I went out and ran into a local artist a couple doors down.  Seemed pretty cool, we chatted, and hey, why not?  Come on in and play during the fourth segment.  Andrea (it's ahn-DRAY-uh) runs http://www.destinationliberation.com/ and has some extremely cool artwork in her studio...where she was hanging out watching Star Wars, so she's definitely "our" people and we'll be talking more with her in the future, I'm sure.
