The Born of Wonder podcast is an intellectual, cultural, and spiritual treat for listeners. As a stay-at-home mother of little ones, I have found immense joy in tuning into this podcast. Katie, the host, has created a truly wonderful audio experience with her background in public radio. The production quality is top-notch, making it a pleasure to listen to each episode.
One of the best aspects of the Born of Wonder podcast is the variety of themes it covers. From living a good story to fortune favoring the brave, Katie explores a wide range of topics that are thought-provoking and inspiring. Her essays and narratives are beautifully crafted, and she often features the works of other talented individuals within the episodes. This diversity keeps the content fresh and engaging.
Another wonderful aspect of this podcast is how it captures the beauty, wonder, and awe that surround us. Through her reflections, writing, and recommendations, Katie brings forth truth and beauty in a profound way. She encourages listeners to seek out the good, true, and beautiful in their own lives. It has been incredibly inspiring and uplifting for me as I navigate my role as a mother.
I appreciate that this podcast appeals to a wide audience. Whether you're searching for intellectual stimulation or spiritual nourishment, Born of Wonder delivers both in abundance. Katie's exploration of sacred and secular art from a Catholic Christian perspective sets this podcast apart from others in its genre. It provides artists with a unique perspective on how spirituality intersects with creative expression.
In terms of critiques, I find it challenging to come up with any significant drawbacks to this podcast. Perhaps some listeners may find certain topics more engaging than others based on personal interests or experiences. However, Katie's captivating storytelling abilities make even unfamiliar subjects accessible and interesting.
In conclusion, I am immensely grateful for The Born of Wonder podcast. It has brought renewed inspiration to my life through its exploration of literature, music, nature, and what it means to be truly human. Katie has created a melodic and thought-provoking experience that nourishes the mind and soul. I highly recommend this podcast to anyone seeking truth, beauty, and wonder in a noisy world. Thank you, Katie, for sharing your gifts and passions with us all.

I hope it has given you wonder and delight and reminded you that it is a beautiful world we live in (truly) - “we make idols of our concepts but wisdom is born of wonder.”
On this podcast episode Katie and Haley discuss her two new books, focusing in particular on the Catholic Imagination (what exactly is that?), the sacramental reality of the world, and how reading a good story can change your life. We also dive a little bit into some of the more unfortunate online discussions re. women that have been circulating lately and how limiting they are. Instead of boxing ourselves into narrow images of womanhood and motherhood, Haley and Katie discuss the ways we can open our minds and hearts to the many beautiful ways of being a woman in the world. Highly encourage you to check out Haley's books (they would make the perfect Christmas present!) and follow along with her work. Ann Kennedy Smith takes seriously the old saying “behind every great man is a great woman,” bringing to light the complicated, illuminating, fascinating stories of women who made their mark and maybe haven't gotten their due recognition. She brings us into the beauty, sadness, and joy of women's lives and brings an important, compelling perspective. She is the writer behind the popular "Cambridge Ladies Dining Society" Substack and an independent scholar currently focusing on the lives of Victorian women (and beyond) at Cambridge. Ann conducts herself with class, kindness, and genuine curiosity. She teaches us there are seasons of life for everything - for children and snatching moments of reading in between diaper changes, and for burying oneself in a dusty library at a romantic and beautiful university. On this episode, Katie and Ann were able to discuss some of the specific women she has profiled in her writing (including Katie's personal favorite, Sylvia Plath), how to balance different priorities in different seasons of life, and how to lean into your creative niche. The Hillbilly Thomists are a band of friars of the Order of Preachers (Dominicans). After playing music together for several years, they released their debut album (The Hillbilly Thomists) in 2017, which reached #3 on the Billboard bluegrass chart and mostly consisted in bluegrass standards and Americana favorites. Since then, the friars in the band have been doing what Dominican friars do: contemplating, studying, and preaching. Their most recent album, Marigold, released in July 2024. Katie was joined on the podcast by band member, Fr. Justin Bolger O.P. Fr. Justin hails from a family of seven and grew up in Maryland. He studied business at the University of Baltimore and earned a Masters in Philosophical Studies from Mt. St. Mary's University in Emmitsburg, MD. He was also a singer/songwriter and recording artist with his sister Margaret. He is now the Associate Chaplain of the University for the Catholic Community at Brown University. Katie had such a great time talking to Fr. Justin. He is very gracious, funny, introspective, and clearly has a true love for the music he is playing. We hear about some of the background behind some favorite Thomist tunes and what it's like for the brothers to all play together. We also discuss the many deep, compelling themes to be found in traditional music and how their band offers the culture a serious, but joyful, contemplation both of the Last Things and the True things. Katie recently visited The Library of Congress for the first time. Her guide was a dear friend, Joanna Colclough - a reference librarian specializing in newspapers and current periodicals at the Library of Congress. Tune into this podcast to hear some highlights from our tour, how you can become a researcher at the Library, learn what the Library actually does (I had no idea), how do you solve a problem like Maria (you'll hear what I mean), and most all, celebrate the history and preservation of knowledge and the written word. “Analog” technology (things like clocks, dimmer switches, speakers, microphones, walkie-talkies, thermometers, etc.) are directly related to the function which they are performing. They are, in other words, simple. You talk into a microphone - you hear a sound. You look at a clock - it tells the time. You set an alarm - it rings. There's not too much of a gap between experience and function. Digital technology, however, is incredibly complex. Smartphones, robotics, AI, cyber security systems, computers - all these things do not necessarily have direct relations between their uses and their functions. They are not analogous. Instead they are the result of a billion computations and numbers very few of us understand. Needless to say, the human brain works in analog. Our brains are wired to understand input-result-repeat. So what happens when we disrupt these natural analog ways of being, infusing our very centered, embodied selves with a confusion of digital data? Well, the results aren't great. Not for kids, but not for adults either. Spikes in anxiety, lack of knowledge retention, memory issues, focus problems, the list goes on and on. Here to help us make sense of it all is someone I have admired for quite a long time here on Substack. In this podcast discussion we cover the practicalities of life as an analog family, what drives Katherine's decisions around screen use and her family, how she's raising ‘analog' teens in digital world, and why parents need to get honest with themselves about their own screen use in order for there to be any real change for kids. Although all this talk of screens and the immense cost it has on our lives and our kids can be heavy, ultimately this is an incredibly positive discussion. When we give up our obsession with our phones, we're free - to have experiences, to adventure through life as a family. This is about liberation, discovery, and reclaiming our lives. And special thanks to my daughter, Jojo, for her introduction to this podcast episode. ---- Childhood Unplugged: Practical Advice to Get Kids Off Screens and Find Balance," came out in July 2023. Shortlisted for the Foreword Indies 2023 Awards and with several translations in the works, it has been well-received by readers around the world who are desperate for a solution to their kids' screen time habits. What is the right thing to do? This is a question that we're all confronted with at some point. Big decisions, little decisions, all can be incredibly difficult to discern what to do. And making choices that give us flexibility, time, and opportunities for creativity can make all the difference when it comes to happiness and pursuing the dreams we're meant to live out (especially for parents!). Les Miserables is one of those profound stories that somehow encompasses the full depth of human experience. We have birth, death, falling in love, disappointment, justice, despair, young revolutionary zeal, forgiveness, and heavenly hope. From Valjean's first encounter with the Bishop - who forgives him, undeservedly so - to Valjean's own forgiveness of Javert (and Javert's inability to accept his mercy) - this a story of love offered, received, and sometimes (tragically) rejected. It is a story that promises the often miserable human condition always has the hope of redemption, if not in this life, “somewhere beyond the barricade.” Today on the podcast I am joined by The Lord of the Rings and Catholicism, was published in December 2023 with En Route Books and Media. When you first encounter the liturgical year, it can be completely overwhelming. There is a saint's feast day every day! What season are we in again? Is it Eastertide? Ordinary Time? Who can keep track? Here to help us make sense of all this - and inspire us to live a rooted, embodied, seasonal, in-tune, life - is Hearthstone Fables. Kristin is a beautiful writer, rooted in story and history, and she beautifully weaves the rhythms of the agrarian year with the rhythms of the Church. She makes connections we may never have thought of (stay tuned for the discussion on the nativities of Christ and St. John the Baptist!) and brings a genuine joy to the liturgical year that makes the discovery of feast days and ancient traditions seem not overwhelming, but exciting, - delightful! A treasure trove to be explored. On the podcast, Kristin discusses how to feel rooted, both in place and in faith, in a modern age opposed to both. Also discussions on how to find community, make the liturgical year a living reality, and how to celebrate with presence and tradition no matter whether you're in an urban or agricultural setting. Today on the podcast Dr. Larry Chapp - former professor and current popular blogger, writer, theologian and founder of the Dorothy Day Catholic Worker Farm - joins us to talk all about Dorothy Day. We discuss her radical politics, her orthodox faith, and what she has to offer a world so at odds with itself. Dorothy Day saw her politics, and her love for the poor, as completely inseparable from her Christian faith - it informed everything she did and everything she stood for. We speak about how to return to a truly 'lived' Christianity, even when it makes us a bit 'weird.' What is the role of money? How much should we even have materially speaking? Is there a deep tension with serving the poor and also being a responsible parent? Why do we read? Is it for edification, intellectual stimulation, or even just 'to be a smart person?' How many of our reasons are linked to a real joy in reading - like when we were kids - the kind of reading that you had you flipping the pages at night, lying out on a blanket all afternoon, the kind that had you lost stories and falling in love with characters that became completely real to you? The Nordic Theory of Love asserts that unhealthy dependencies inhibit our ability to truly love one another - that true love thrives under circumstances that establish independence and equality. Understanding this theory is key to understanding the economic and social policies in Nordic countries, policies that continuously have them topping out the rankings in the World Happiness Report. Nordic societies put in place social safety nets - including universal access to family leave, childcare, healthcare, and education - in order to free individuals from cycles of dependency and live more authentically. Or at least that is the theory. Does it work? Finnish journalist and author Anu Partanen is here to explain how all these policies play out in Nordic societies and why she thinks they actually could work, especially at the state level, in the USA. I ask her all the questions I've always wanted to know about Nordic countries - How do businesses keep running if everyone is continuously taking off for maternity leave? What about those infamous wait times when you go the doctor? Is this really just a culture obsessed with conformity? Today on the podcast I'm joined by my friend Rachel Remmes to discuss good food, cooking, writing, and discovering our authentic passions in a world full of distractions and mixed motivations. You'll get some great recipes and cooking tips as well as some broader personal reflections about how to establish a life that reflects our true joys and desires. Rachel Remmes is a recovering academic and passionate at-home chef who lives in New York City with her husband and three young children. Although she has been cooking avidly for as long as she can remember, in October 2023 she launched a substack - Can't Help But Cook. Her goal with this substack is to reignite an appreciation for at-home cooking by learning the fundamentals all while teaching her readers how to correctly salt meat and poach fish along the way. Rachel, who earned a masters in art history, views cooking as a creative art form that adds beauty and meaning to our lives in the same way as a good book or a stunning painting. Readers of her substack can enjoy her two published cookbook reviews. Here during Valentine's Day Week, we're celebrating one of life's biggest joys: Friendship, a love that is often much devalued in our modern society. While friendship might be unnecessary in the most basic biological sense (we need parents, we need spouses, in ways that we don't need friends), it is precisely that lack of obligation that has the potential to elevate friendship to an extraordinarily high, even near divine, place in our lives. Fall into beautiful stories again - and then hear some stirring music from Dvorak - and get excited for a full season of wonder, awe, and joy :) Cheers! ------- Visit: www.bornofwonder.com / https://bornofwonder.substack.com/ Come to Ireland with me! Animals understand that winter is a time for retreat and rest. They know that surviving the harshness of winter means living differently - sometimes even entering a liminal state of being: hibernation. And while human beings don't hibernate per say, there's a lot we can learn from the rhythms of the natural world. Whether it's ignoring 'clock time,' embracing 'denning,' or 'The Watch,' there are many ways to encourage a joyful engagement with our body and mind's need for seasonal rest. As Shakespeare wrote - 'a sad tale's best for winter' - there's something about this time of year that merges the melancholy with the imaginative, the darkness with the light. Instead of hiding from the contradictions, let's embrace them. special thanks to Chris Marquette for his piano playing on this episode! ---- Subscribe to Born of Wonder on Substack https://bornofwonder.substack.com Support Born of Wonder on Patreon https://www.patreon.com/bornofwonder www.bornofwonder.com ------- The Art of Hibernation by Katherine May https://katherinemay.substack.com/p/the-art-of-hibernation What Is Hibernation?

We'll hear the original poem by Friederich Schiller - 'Do you feel the Creator's Presence? / Seek Him beyond the Stars! / He must live beyond the Stars.' Your magic reunites those Whom stern custom has parted;* All men will become brothers* Under your protective wing. Let the man who has had the fortune To be a helper to his friend, And the man who has won a noble woman, Join in our chorus of jubilation! Yes, even if he holds but one soul As his own in all the world! But let the man who knows nothing of this Steal away alone and in sorrow. All the world's creatures draw Draughts of joy from nature; Both the just and the unjust Follow in her gentle footsteps. She gave us kisses and wine And a friend loyal unto death; She gave the joy of life to the lowliest, And to the angels who dwell with God. Joyous, as His suns speed Through the glorious order of Heaven, Hasten, brothers, on your way Exultant as a knight victorious. Be embraced, all ye millions! With a kiss for all the world! Brothers, beyond the stars Surely dwells a loving Father. Do you kneel before Him, oh millions? Do you feel the Creator's presence? Seek Him beyond the stars! He must dwell beyond the stars. Medieval Christians talked about Jesus in ways that can shock us today - Jesus as Mother, as Lover. These evocative ways of viewing Christ can open us up to a surprisingly rich and imaginative spirituality. For many people in the US Daylight Savings Time means short days and long nights. How do we find joy and thrive during seasons of waning light and early darkness? On this podcast we'll talk about finding Light in the Darkness - Cozy traditions to embrace 'hygge' - and how it's important to not live in denial of (both spiritual and physical) seasons. Learning to embrace the darkness can mean embracing Joy in all of life's ups and downs. We'll learn a bit about the tradition of Souling and Soul Cakes and then revisit an episode all about Praying for the Dead. We'll do a deep dive into the eerie melancholy and beauty of graveyards and why we should go pray, read poetry, and spend time in churchyards among the Dead. Elflore and the stories of 'the hidden folk' are so infused in Icelandic culture, even today, that most Icelanders see elves as simply part of their landscape. If they don't outright believe in them, they at least can't say for sure that they don't exist. And in fact so many people DO believe in elves that advocates have blocked new construction and successfully lobbied parliament on behalf of Elvish interests. What do we make of this? Our modern mind resists this sort of engagement with fairy stories, but what do we lose when we sap all possibility of magic from our environments? Today on the podcast Katie talks with Seth Lewis, a technical support specialist here to explain how we can find the wonder, beauty, and awe in technology, and specifically in Artificial Intelligence. Katie and Seth discuss how to find balance in our tech use and how we should be skeptical of any existential claims regarding AI. Seth's great advice - "when in doubt, drop the phone!" The comparison of AI to the A-bomb is frequently used but misleading. The technology behind AI is more like nuclear energy which is in fact the cleanest and most potent and most sustainable form of energy we have...it is also the most potentially dangerous when applied but the advances made in that field in the past 100 years are unknown to most people because all we think about is the A-bomb. The application of nuclear to the A-bomb is just one of many, many applications and I believe we should continue advancing the application of nuclear forward because it's pros vastly outweigh the cons and it's not even close. I don't exactly believe that so strongly about AI...but mostly. I think the world is far poorer if fields that are potentially dangerous in application find their advancement forcible stunted from the outside. We could've stopped the advancement of the technology and production of cell phones (as some historically communist countries like Cuba have)...but I don't think that's the kind of society we want. 2. Some occupational correction (i.e. people losing work over an emergent technology) is inevitable. That's not to trivialize it - I'm at a lower level at a big employer, so I'm one of the people most likely to be impacted! However, the idea that if an AI can do what a human can, that means there is no more job for the human is, in part, the lump of labor fallacy - interestingly, one of the writers on substack you pointed me to points that out, too, but I didn't read his article until after our talk! In a free (or mostly free) market, even when one opportunity is lost, others are created. Grocery stores are still hiring humans even though almost all have fewer cashiers thanks to the automated/fast checkout lanes (that is a suuuuuper brief and not nuanced comparison...but it is fair).

The same God who makes us to live in the world without the working hypothesis of God is the God before whom we stand continually. Before God, and with God, we live without God. God consents to be pushed out of the world and onto the cross; God is weak and powerless in the world and in precisely this way, and only so, is at our side and helps us. Matt. 8:17 Makes it quite clear the Christ helps us not by the virtue of his omnipotence but rather by virtue of his weakness and suffering! This is the crucial distinction between Christianity and all religions. Human religiosity directs people in need to the power of God in the world, God as deus ex machina. The Bible direct people towards the powerlessness and the suffering of God; only the suffering God can help. The human being is called upon to share in God's suffering at the hands of a godless world.... It is not a religious act that makes someone a Christian, but rather sharing God's suffering in the worldly life." This a sound rich episode inviting you to meditate, wonder, and get a little lost in some dreamscapes of your own. ----- History of "row row row your boat" https://americansongwriter.com/behind-the-meaning-of-the-nursery-rhyme-row-row-row-your-boat/ Martin Luther King Jr. "I have a Dream" Speech https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vP4iY1TtS3s Anthony Hopkins reciting Hamlet's soliloquey https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lp06Yoj8yWU Original Broadway Recording "I Dreamed a Dream" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5fiWR5iyFf0 Recommendation: Thomas Newman - Meet Joe Black - "Cold Lamb Sandwich" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S2XmueM7X_M ------ “I think we dream so we don't have to be apart for so long. On today's episode, Katie shares a radio piece she produced for PRX/The Goethe Institut called "The Night." This is a chance to meditate on our charged perceptions of the Night - its darkness, its hopes, dreams, promises, myths, and legends. A particularly poignant topic for Mother's Day as we focus in on how sleepless nights with a new baby can have us asking all those 'big questions' that seem too scary or distant during the day. ------ Subscribe to Born of Wonder on Substack https://bornofwonder.substack.com Support Born of Wonder on Patreon https://www.patreon.com/bornofwonder www.bornofwonder.com instagram: @bornofwonder ----- Guitar playing - Chris Marquette Other background - Bluedot sessions "The Night" https://www.goethe.de/prj/tbp/en/eps/thn.html
We're being overwhelmed with stories of artificial intelligence - AI's ability to mimic human emotion, write faster than any person, create beautiful art, play music, find any fact in less than a second. We're also being told of AI's less desirable effects - the prevalence of fraud, plagiarism, hacking, even targeted threats. So what do we make of this pandora's box? And where does that leave us hum-drum human beings, with our ordinary minds, hearts, and souls? On this episode we'll explore the UNIQUELY HUMAN capacity for imagination and celebrate the beauty and uniqueness of the human experience, ultimately emphasizing just how much AI can never give us. ------ Subscribe to Born of Wonder on Substack https://bornofwonder.substack.com Support Born of Wonder on Patreon https://www.patreon.com/bornofwonder www.bornofwonder.com instagram: @bornofwonder ----- How Web Platforms Collapse: The Facebook Case Study Ted Gioia https://tedgioia.substack.com/p/how-web-platforms-collapse-the-facebook/comments Recommendation: Anne of Green Gables Series by L.M. St. Joseph never saw an angel the way Mary did, clear as day, with her waking eyes. He never saw the burning bush or heard the thunderous voice of God, “I am that I am.” St. Joseph only heard God in the quietest of ways. He dreamed of angels. He heard God while he slept. Today on the podcast we'll be inspired by St. Joseph and his profound trust. What role did dreams play in his life - what role can they play in ours?
