Statistics are showing an increase of worry and anxiety in children.  This will be a little different from our usual episode but the Bible has a lot to say about this so we thought we should address it.  We will differentiate between fear, worry, and and anxiety and give each emotion their own episode.  Today we discuss fear: Are there good fears? ie; fear of fire, or fear of the Lord Can fear lie to us? Why does God tell us not to be afraid? What promise does he give with it **If you would like to hear all of David and Goliath that episode is :#112 "There's no one like you." #307 "What if David had a Bad Attitude" is a shortened version with a different application. THIS MONTH'S PRAYER GUIDE: Praying God's Word for Your Child's Anxiety To kick off our conversation about anxious kids this month, I dug all the way back in the archives of the Million Praying Moms podcast to episode #21, where we interviewed author, podcaster, and counselor, Sissy Goff about her new book at that time called Raising Worry Free Girls. Since that time, Sissy has released several more books on this topic. I'm going to list them all in the show notes for you so you can get your hands on them... but as I tried to plan for this season, I just couldn't think of anyone else I'd rather have share with you on this topic, so I decided to clean up the older episode a bit and share it again today. For those of you who are new around here, the extra voice you'll hear is that of my previous ministry partner and cohost, Erin Mohring. In this episode, Sissy walks us through what she's learned from spending the last 30 years helping girls and their parents find confidence in who they are and hope in who God is making them to be, both as individuals and families. You won't want to miss this episode! *********** Today's show is brought to you by our newest Prayer Guide, Praying God's Word for Your Child's Anxiety, by Becky Keife. Pray for God to work in your children's hearts to: Learn to recognize anxiety for what it is... Keep their eyes on Jesus... Find sure footing that withstands the storm... Know who they are in Christ... Let go of the need to control... And gain compassion, understanding, and the ability to find peace for your own heart. With biblical teaching on anxiety, and scripture-inspired prayers this digital prayer guide is perfect for the busy mom who needs God to move in the hearts of her kids. Like, when would we know if it's the right time to go seek help for our child? For the parent who right now is overwhelmed, maybe they are anxious about their kids own anxiety, what encouragement or compassion do you have to offer them today? Are there any scriptures that have been especially precious to you as you've counseled people through anxiety? What are some ways that we can be praying for you?Guest Bio:Sissy Goff is the Director of Child and Adolescent Counseling at Daystar Counseling Ministries in Nashville, Tennessee, where she works alongside her counseling assistant/pet therapist, Lucy the Havanese. Do you have anxiety on speed dial? Have you ever felt like you're on a one-loop roller coaster of fear? Do the "what if's" have you trapped in the worry spin-cycle? We all experience anxiety. It can feel like we're on a one-loop rollercoaster with no way out. But there is a way out. So, today is for you if… If you know anxiety is holding you back from the life you're meant to live. If you desire a joy-filled life instead of a stress-free life. If you're ready to stop using anxiety as an excuse so you can stop hiding, show up fully yourself and fulfill your God-given purpose–courageously. I grew up in a culture of achievement, but we've flip-flopped. We are in a worry/fear-based culture. Even our kids are experiencing anxiety like never before. More people are on anxiety meds than ever before. It's become a normal part of life. When God said, "I know the plans I have for you," I don't think that anxiety was a part of that plan. I believe God wants us to experience life differently. Worry is like the what if… What if a spider comes after me in the middle of the night? Fear is when that issue is right there in your presence. That spider would be right there. This definition of anxiety comes from Sissy Goff, a therapist and author of Raising Worry-Free Girls. Anxiety is an overestimation of the problem and an underestimation of yourself. What are you anxious about that you're overestimating the problem and underestimating yourself? Not only is anxiety an underestimation of ourselves, but it's also an underestimation of our God and how capable He is of handling your problem. Ask these two questions to help jump off that anxiety rollercoaster: First, think about one thing you're anxious about. Now, ask yourself: 1. Do you have control to make a change in this situation? If you say no–give it to God. Then He gives you peace. Philippians 4:6-7 NKJV 6 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; 7 and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. If you say yes, you have control or some control to make a change; ask yourself… 2. What would I do if I did know what to do? Just pretend for a second and answer that question. Then do that! Most of the time, we know what to do but are too afraid or underestimate ourselves. Go back to, there is more in you than you thought possible and that our God is so much bigger than our problem! So many times when we're on the spiral anxiety loop, we forget just how big our God is. Put that problem in perspective. Put yourself in perspective. Put your God in perspective. We serve a big God and can do all things through Christ, who strengthens us! You've got this, and Father's got you! Thanks a Bunch for listening! Until Next Time, Live Fearlessly Free! Resources: Courageous Club is a 12-month coaching membership where you can learn (and practice) to stop hiding, show up fully yourself and fulfill your God-given purpose. With anxiety at an all-time high in adults and kids alike, one of the biggest battles parents face right now is how to raise worry-free kids. But what does that actually look like in a world of 24/7 news, social media, and culture wars? This week on Unapologetic licensed professional counselor and bestselling author Sissy Goff is here to help lend her insight and practical advice to parents striving to combat anxiety in their kids with God's truth. Throughout their conversation, Julia and Sissy both share their expertise on the anxiety epidemic our kids are facing—outlining practical ways to tell if your child is anxious, the key differences between worry, anxiety, and fear, and how to raise worry-free girls. Anxious children are often the product of anxious parents, so Julia and Sissy challenge parents to first take a look at their own behaviors as the starting point for helping their kids get healthy. Julia wraps up their conversation by asking Sissy what parents should do about social media-—when to allow it, how to monitor your child's activity, and which platform worries Sissy the most. This is a relevant and truly applicable conversation you're not going to want to miss! Sissy's book, Raising Worry-Free Girls is out now! Today I am SO excited to share with you my conversation with David Thomas. David is an author, a speaker, and a counselor at Daystar Counseling in Nashville, TN. In this conversation, David shares such incredible wisdom, and insight based on his experience as a father of three, and twenty-five years of walking with and working with kids that have come in and out of his office. In all of his work, including the incredible Raising Boys and Girls podcast that he co-hosts with fellow Daystar counselors Sissy Goff and Melissa Trevathan, and his books Wild Things: The Art of Nurturing Boys : A Practical Guide to Understanding the Way, The Mind, The Heart of a Boy and his latest book Raising Emotionally Strong Boys: Tools Your Son Can Build on for Life David shares his passion for boys to be seen for who they truly are from the inside out. These resources are also dedicated to equipping parents and other adults who have young kids in their lives to be able to practically connect with these young hearts and help navigate what they're experiencing as they grow. He shares with us some of those insights and a flyover of the five stages of development we see through a boys life from birth until fully developed maturity in their early-mid twenties, and how we as the adults in their lives can meet them where they are all along the way as well as what challenges they may be facing as they grow.  If navigating raising kids wasn't already a challenge, because it has always been a sanctifying experience,  statistics that David and his partners at Daystar have found show that we are experiencing an epidemic of anxiety in children. So David is passionate about helping us adults think through how can we pivot and be proactive in the emotional lives of kids instead of reactive when we start to really see some signs that something is going on. David says “All behavior is communication,” so with that in mind he tries to peel back the layers and look underneath the behaviors to get to the heart of what's really going on, and also taking into account the hard wiring of how boys in particular process emotion and anxiety in their bodies.  Also, please know this episode isn't just for parents of boys, it has such helpful info for all kids of multiple ages, and its also not just for parents! There's such good stuff here, and I cannot wait for you to hear it.  No matter where you are in this journey, don't forget that you matter, and your story matters, and the Lord will complete the work He has begun in you, and in the lives of the kids you love.  Episode Sponsor: Tony Crabtree of Crabtree Homes with Exit Realty Home buyer guide: http://bit.ly/buyersguidecrabtreehomes Seller guide: http://bit.ly/sellerguidecrabtreehomes Facebook Instagram Website YouTube Connecting with David and Daystar Counseling:  Daystar Counseling in Nashville (This is how you can reach out for a consult with David) Facebook Instagram Raising Boys and Girls Podcast  Website  References: -Wild Things: The Art of Nurturing Boys : A Practical Guide to Understanding the Way, The Mind, The Heart of a Boy -Sissy Goff  -Young Life -Stephen James (co-author of Wild Things) -Raising Emotionally Strong Boys: Tools Your Son Can Build on for Life Are My Kids On Track? -Raising Worry-Free Girls  -David and Sissy working through the stages of development on the Raising Boys & Girls Podcast began with this episode, and then the following 8 podcasts are dedicated to each stage of development for boys AND girls.  -Feelings Chart -Strong & Smart Workbook -Phil Herndon and Sage Hill Counseling (Phil was on the podcast in episode 50 ) -”The Heart of the Matter” by Don Henley  -Sissy's workbook Braver, Stronger, Smarter Scripture Reference:  Philippians 1:6- He will complete the work He began in you. ---- JOIN OUR PATREON COMMUNITY!!!! In this conversation I got to speak with one of my parenting heroes and an expert on girl's development needs, Sissy Goff. Out of the 29 years experience she has invested in working with girls, she shares some incredible wisdom and encouragement. How important a role do fathers play in the lives of their daughters? What do daughters need most from us? What questions do daughters carry with them wherever they go, and what gifts does God give uniquely to fathers who have the courage to press in and love well? What common mistakes do fathers make when fathering their daughters into and then through their teenage years? And given that most girls suffer silently under the crushing weight of anxiety, how can we recognize this anxiety and offer our strength in a helpful way? We also addressed the 4 developmental stages girls must go through to become women. • Stage 1 – Discovery Years, birth - 5 • Stage 2 - Adventurous, 6-10 • Stage 3 – Narcissistic Years, 11-14 • Stage 4 – Autonomous Years, 15-19 We talk about these things and much more. Listen, enjoy and be encouraged that you are God-picked to be your daughter's father for a reason and with God's assistance you have everything you need to succeed. :) ABOUT Sissy Goff, M.Ed., LPC-MHSP, spends most of her days talking with girls and their families, with the help of her counseling assistant/pet therapist, Lucy the Havanese. Hi friends! I'm so excited to be back with you for season THREE of the podcast! I cannot believe we are 2 years and 3 seasons in, but man the Lord is wild, isn't He? To  start off this season, we have the absolutely wonderful and wildly talented Randall Goodgame. Mr. Randall is a little bit of a celebrity around my house because of how much my children love his music and his show, “Slugs and Bugs”. If you've never heard of it, the show itself is a lot like a Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood type environment where Mr. Randall and his real life friends and family, Andrew Peterson, Dr. Russell Moore, Scott Hamilton, Ellie Holcomb, Sissy Goff, Dorena Williamson and many, many more visit him and his puppet friends, the slugs and bugs at their workshop where they learn life lessons, talk about the mysteries of the Gospel, and how God can make Himself known in any of it as we all grow up together. The songs they share on the show and from the albums are saturated in God's Word which makes scripture memorization so accessible even for the youngest of children, as well as ways to help talk about hard and big topics happening in the world, mixed in with a whole lot of silliness too.     In our conversation today, we get to hear about how Randall's struggle to engage conversations about the Gospel with his own children birthed in him a pursuit to use humor, story and song to engage them, and ultimately engage His own heart about these important things because it's worth the work. This conversation isn't just for parents or people with kids in their lives, we talk about how people who do not have kids in their lives can still impact those around them, and encourage ALL of us to press into the truth of Christ as we navigate hard things.    When I was praying and thinking about how to start this season off, it just kept coming to me how important it was to engage the future of the Kingdom of God. I feel like there are so many of us that feel like we have to just get through the young years of kids, whether in passing in other environments or in our own homes, and then when they're older we can attempt to navigate big things with them. But the truth is, our kids haven't been hidden from big things. Life happens to them, just like it does to us. This pandemic has happened to them, as it's happening to us. Not to mention, how we engage our own hearts, pours out onto those we encounter and so it just felt so important to me, especially for the many kids that are getting ready to go back to school, to talk about these things, and present people and ideas to our simply stories family so that we might feel more equipped to press in where it feels awkward or hard. When we can break that down to a child's level, you might be surprised how much that impacts how you interact with adults as well.   Jesus said to come to Him with faith like a child. Whether there are children in your life or not, you are HIS child. For those who have said yes to Jesus, you are a son or a daughter of the Most High God. You are perfectly and wonderfully made to display His creativity, and His love to the world. No matter where you've been, or what you're going through now, that gift to you cannot be taken away. What might it be like to ask your heart how to approach the Lord, let alone your neighbors like a child? I think that's probably going to provide a unique answer for everyone, but I think it's an interesting question to contemplate. You have a good Father who loves to engage with you. Even if it feels like there is nothing delightful in your life, He wants to hear about it. Maybe start right there. It matters to Him because your story matters to Him. You matter.   References: “Catapultanaugahikawallawallarickitikianapoodloodlakastanvilletown” song “Fruits of the Spirit” - Slugs and Bugs Right Now Media  Andrew Peterson Slugs and Bugs Lullabies album VeggieTales One of their songs from VT Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood Mr. Andrew with the Christmas songs we like is his “Behold the Lamb of God” album “Operation No More Tears” - Sally Lloyd Jones “Tell it to Jesus”- Slugs and Bugs Sissy Goff on “Slugs and Bugs” about technology is called “Modern Kid” I was only able to find it on Amazon Prime! I'm so honored to have Sissy Goff back in the studio to discuss her new book, The Worry-Free Parent: Living in Confidence So Your Kids Can Too. When Sissy was here a couple years ago for her book Raising Worry Free Girls, the response was phenomenal, and to this day, I still hear from so many parents who were deeply impacted by that book!A counselor for over 30 years who helps families through her counseling practice, Sissy joins me today to discuss her new book, The Worry-Free Parent. I highly recommend this book if you have ever struggled with feeling like you aren't doing enough as a parent or stressing over the present and the future for your kids.In this episode, Sissy shares how so many kids today are dealing with anxiety that actually stems from their parents' own anxiety. She gives practical tools parents can implement immediately to help them feel less uptight, scared, or stressed about how they might be messing up their kids or missing the mark as a parent.I especially appreciated how honest she was about how trying to bubble wrap and protect our kids from struggle is actually a way we end up hurting our kids and making life harder for them in the long run.She shares how anxiety in both parents and kids can stem from intrusive thoughts becoming stuck in a “loop rollercoaster” in our minds. In our conversation, I ask her to walk us through calming techniques to help shift us out of that loop. We talk about what it looks like to get to the root of where our worry and fear is coming from and what to do about it.This is another powerful episode that you don't want to miss!In This Episode[00:35] – Sissy Goff returns to the podcast today![4:04] – A suggestion from Sissy's editor prompted her to write two books.[8:55] – It's normal for parents to worry, but anxiety is when intrusive thoughts become stuck and take control.[13:49] – Parents should realize that many times their anxiety stems from wanting the best for their kids.[15:04] – What it looks like to practice deep breathing and grounding techniques.[18:22] – My anxiety stemmed from caring too much about what others thought of my parenting.[19:50] – Sissy feels that mothers are too hard on themselves nowadays.[22:42] – The five different types of parenting.[25:49] – Letting your kids experience discomfort helps build character and resilience in them.[28:30] – How releasing my need for control to God helps alleviate my anxiety.Links & ResourcesCrystal PaineThe Crystal Paine Show – 100.
