Have you ever felt isolated because you can't open up to others? Do you worry that showing vulnerability might lead to more hurt? You are in for such a special treat today. This is such an honest, incredibly real conversation about the risks of vulnerability, the hurts that come from letting others in AND the incredible opportunities for intimacy, connection, and healing when we do. My dear friends, Kathy Tuan-MacLean and Tara Edelschick, authors of the new Bible study experience, "Moms at the Well," surveyed over seven hundred moms and discovered most women struggle with worry, anger, comparison, escapism, a desire for control, and heartbreak. Yet most women feel alone in these struggles. If you've ever felt lonely or skeptical about finding community with other women, this episode is for you. Here's what we cover: * The dissonance we feel about vulnerability (2:21) * How 1 marriage crisis launched a 20 year small group (11:28) * 2 essential ingredients to safeguard trust (16:00) * How they dealt with gossip (21:50) * Strategies for dealing with hurt feelings, ruptures & repair (24:38) * One shocking result from their survey (34:43) * The strategy Alison used to find a friend when lonely (43:35) * The one thing that kills group trust (48:43) For 20% off + free shipping for Moms at the Well, use code IVPPOD20 here Find a full transcript and list of resources from this episode here Thanks to our sponsors: Go to www.organifi.com/bestofyou today and use code BESTOFYOU for 20% off your order today. In this week's episode, we dive into the beginnings of adolescence. As we know, girls have often surged ahead in their maturity, physically and emotionally. Which, in this stage, means not-so-great news. But, the sooner we see girls move into their teenage angsty-ness, the sooner they move out of it. For girls, we'll call these years the narcissistic years…because, IYKYK. For boys, we'll call him the Individual. Listen along as we dive into who he and she are in their middle school years. And our hope is that this conversation gives you hope as you buckle up for what we believe are some of the toughest years in a child's life…and a parent's, too...particularly for girls. Boy parents, yours is coming next! Proverbs 30:18-19 in The Message says, “Three things amaze me, no, four things I'll never understand—how an eagle flies so high in the sky, how a snake glides over a rock, how a ship navigates the ocean, why adolescents act the way they do.” In case you missed Stage One and Stage Two, the episodes are linked below. This week, licensed professional counselor and author Sissy Goff joins us to talk to parents about how anxious parents create anxious kids, intentionality in parenting versus a posture of hyper-vigilance, how to navigate trauma with children, and how to become a worry-free parent. What does that mean? As you know, anxiety has an amazing ability to spread. Time and time again, when Sissy Goff has an anxious child or teen in her office, she's found they have at least one very well-intentioned but anxious parent. And that anxiety is likely affecting your kids, distracting you in the present, and making you feel like it will define your family's future. We talk a lot about building resilience into kids in our offices. It felt timely and important to share a conversation with our friend, Rebekah Lyons, about her new book, Building a Resilient Life: How Adversity Awakens Strength, Hope, and Meaning. We talked about turning toward anxiety and not away from it, and even what that looks like in the context of parenting. As we continue journeying through The Worry Free Parent content, we've moved from understanding to help. This week we talk through help for the mind, help for the body and help for the heart. You've heard us say before, and we will keep reminding you, that we can only take the kids we love as far as we've gone ourselves. If it's difficult for us to quiet the voice of worry, and practice these game-changing skills ourselves, it will be hard for our kids to do the same. Practicing these skills allows kids to see it on the grown ups they trust the most. It also allows us to be more of the parents (and people) we hope to be. . . . . .Order The Worry-Free Parent or The Worry-Free Parent Workbook today!Sign up to receive the RBG monthly newsletter to keep up to date with where David and Sissy are speaking, where they are taco'ing, PLUS conversation starters for you and your family to share! Join David, Sissy, and Melissa as they focus on HOPE. This was set to be recorded last week and little did they know how their hope would be impacted by the tragedy that unfolded at the Covenant School. This recording was honestly the first chance they had to talk through the week…to process the loss and the grief and the moments of God's goodness piercing through. Because, as the Uber driver they mentioned in the episode said, “We share the same hope.” We who have run for our very lives to God have every reason to grab the promised hope with both hands and never let go. It's an unbreakable spiritual lifeline, reaching past all appearances right to the very presence of God where Jesus, running on ahead of us, has taken up his permanent post… Hebrews 6:18-20, MSG. . . . .A special thank you to our sponsors:Hiya Health - Go to hiyahealth.com/RBG and receive 50% off your first order!Sundays - Go to SundaysForDogs.com/RBG or use code RBG at checkout to get 35% off your first order.. . . . .Sign up to receive the RBG monthly newsletter to keep up to date with where David and Sissy are speaking, where they are taco'ing, PLUS conversation starters for you and your family to share! I'm so honored to have Sissy Goff back in the studio to discuss her new book, The Worry-Free Parent: Living in Confidence So Your Kids Can Too. When Sissy was here a couple years ago for her book Raising Worry Free Girls, the response was phenomenal, and to this day, I still hear from so many parents who were deeply impacted by that book!A counselor for over 30 years who helps families through her counseling practice, Sissy joins me today to discuss her new book, The Worry-Free Parent. I highly recommend this book if you have ever struggled with feeling like you aren't doing enough as a parent or stressing over the present and the future for your kids.In this episode, Sissy shares how so many kids today are dealing with anxiety that actually stems from their parents' own anxiety. She gives practical tools parents can implement immediately to help them feel less uptight, scared, or stressed about how they might be messing up their kids or missing the mark as a parent.I especially appreciated how honest she was about how trying to bubble wrap and protect our kids from struggle is actually a way we end up hurting our kids and making life harder for them in the long run.She shares how anxiety in both parents and kids can stem from intrusive thoughts becoming stuck in a “loop rollercoaster” in our minds. In our conversation, I ask her to walk us through calming techniques to help shift us out of that loop. We talk about what it looks like to get to the root of where our worry and fear is coming from and what to do about it.This is another powerful episode that you don't want to miss!In This Episode[00:35] – Sissy Goff returns to the podcast today![4:04] – A suggestion from Sissy's editor prompted her to write two books.[8:55] – It's normal for parents to worry, but anxiety is when intrusive thoughts become stuck and take control.[13:49] – Parents should realize that many times their anxiety stems from wanting the best for their kids.[15:04] – What it looks like to practice deep breathing and grounding techniques.[18:22] – My anxiety stemmed from caring too much about what others thought of my parenting.[19:50] – Sissy feels that mothers are too hard on themselves nowadays.[22:42] – The five different types of parenting.[25:49] – Letting your kids experience discomfort helps build character and resilience in them.[28:30] – How releasing my need for control to God helps alleviate my anxiety.Links & ResourcesCrystal PaineThe Crystal Paine Show – 100.
