From the top of our head to the tips of our toes, every woman wants to know that she is beautiful. Author, Dorena Williamson, dreams of teaching brown-skinned little girls that they are beautiful in a world that doesn't always tell them that. In this episode of the Better Together Podcast, you're invited into a precious and tender conversation about the battle for beauty as a black woman, and how we can teach young girls, especially black girls, God's beautiful truth about them. We're also going to spill the tea on the secrets of black hair! RESOURCES FROM THIS EPISODE dorenawilliamson.com The Celebration Place Crowned with Glory ABOUT OUR SPECIAL GUEST Dorena Williamson loves the power of a good story and writes children's books that adults need too. She is the author of ColorFull, ThoughtFull, and GraceFull, and forthcoming books include A Celebration Place (IVPKids) and Crowned with Glory (WaterBrook Multnomah). She and her husband Dr. Chris Williamson planted multiethnic Strong Tower Bible Church in 1995 and they have four teenage and adult children.
In our kick off of the 2022 season, co-hosts Mike and Amy talk with author Dorena Williamson about her new book, Crowned with Glory. The narrative around Black hair hasn't always been a celebratory one. In fact, Black women and girls have faced hair discrimination everywhere, from schools to the workplace to the Olympic Games. In CROWNED WITH GLORY (on sale 1/25/22; WaterBrook), bestselling author Dorena Williamson flips this harmful narrative on its head by telling a beautiful story of self-love, affirmation, and God's love for His unique creations that will inspire children of color and enlighten people of all ethnicities. Through the story of Azira, a young Black girl full of spirit and talent, Williamson highlights the Black hair experience—from combing out big hair and visiting the salon to wearing a satin hair wrap for bed and braiding hair to swim. As Azira rocks her God-given beauty and expresses her uniqueness with fun hairstyles, she grows in confidence and experiences the joy of self-love. Written in bold and lyrical verse, Williamson draws on scriptures such as 1 Corinthians 11:15 (“…if a woman has long hair, it is her glory”) and Psalm 8:5 (“You have made them a little lower than the angels and crowned them with glory and honor”) to offer this ode to Black hair and Black girl joy. Illustrated by Shellene Rodney, this delightful resource is ideal for children ages 4-8 and their adults who enjoy stories that celebrate diversity and positive self-image. After reading Crowned with Glory, young readers will be empowered to always embrace and love exactly who God created them to be. Dorena Williamson is a speaker, bestselling writer, church planter, and bridge builder whose work has been featured in Christianity Today and Crosswalk. She writes stories that celebrate all colors, build cultural bridges, and motivate lasting change for children and their parents. Williamson's previous titles include ColorFull, ThoughtFull, and GraceFull. She and her husband, Chris, have four children. Visit her website at www.dorenawilliamson.com.

Dorena Williamson's journey to becoming a writer was an unexpected one and began when she as a mom noticed a dearth of literature that offered the representation for her Black children. And if she did find books that featured characters of color, the faith element was missing. So she began praying, "God, how can you use me to have an impact in this area of addressing race and colorblindness?" The answer to this prayer was that Dorena became a children's author, starting with her 2018 book ColorFull: Celebrating the Colors God Gave Us. She is now one of the featured authors in the inaugural year of IVP Kids with her newest book The Celebration Place which offers a captivating vision of the church as God intended. You will love hearing from this delightful, faithful writer who has had to push against everything from imposter syndrome to apathy about racial issues in the industry, and in so doing has created books that both children and adults can treasure. About the Guest:Dorena Williamson has a passion for all children to hear the message of God's diverse kingdom. She writes children's books that adults also enjoy and is the author of ColorFull, ThoughtFull, and GraceFull. Today we are doing something a little different in order to raise an Ebenezer because of what God has done over the last 100 episodes. One of my dearest friends and I sat down at her kitchen table and just… talked. As someone who has walked with me through all of the life that's happened since we began the podcast, April McKinney was the perfect person to talk about where we've been and where we're going. We talk about things like the effect of covid on us personally, the world, our communities, the Church, and what that has taught us, and I answer some questions friends and listeners have sent in, and man, they did not hold back! All of the stories we've encountered on the podcast have revealed in some measure how the stories of those around us can inform our compassion, broaden our perspective, and give us a more intentional glimpse into God's vision of His upside down Kingdom if we let them. Our longing for resolution, the need for perseverance, and living in a season where we are all desperately seeking hope has postured us to either give into the fight or flight that wrecks our struggle for control or it helps us see how much we need to surrender to the One that holds all things together. The digging deeper into our faith, into the Word, seeking repentance, holding on to a teachable spirit, and learning more about who God is so we can trust Him more is hard, holy, and necessary work. Thank you for all the time you've spent with me over the last 3 seasons and all the episodes that have led us here, friend. I'm excited about what's coming next and where God is leading, and how He's growing me as well. If there's an episode you've really liked or maybe learned something from the guest, I'd love to hear about it! Feel free to send me a message any time, or share about it through a review! I'm grateful for all of these stories and I want you to know you matter, friend. Your story matters. Today we have on children's minister, author, and founder of Little Shoots, Deep Roots, Christie Thomas. Christie is a woman who is passionate about equipping families to engage their hearts with the Gospel. Her children's books give amazing verbiage for how to deal with big issues in the lives of children, which is so helpful in general, but especially now living in a season that is full of such uncertainty that our children experience in their worlds too. Christie's latest book is a Mother Son Prayer Journal. As a mother of several young boys, Christie shares about the challenge of raising young men to be God chasers who practice repentance, humility, strength, respect for others, how to go to God with the good things and the bad things, and remembering God is the One who is faithful and who holds all things together. Christie's method in all she does in her ministry and her writing is to take things back to small steps that sow Truth. In a world where we as adults are often trying to find quick ways to handle more, this is such a good reminder to slow down, and focus on the small, but mighty. While we're doing that, we can more clearly see it's God that holds all things together and we can point the kids in our lives to do the same. One of my biggest takeaways from talking with Christie was just how much little habits make a huge difference in so many aspects of life, but especially in parenting and communicating about the Gospel. We also dive into how men and women can partner in spiritually leading and nurturing a home. Christie points out that as Christians we are called to make disciples. As followers of Christ and parents; that includes our children. We discuss what discipleship from both parents may look like in a manner that honors God, and compliments how every parent and every partnership is uniquely and wonderfully made. I hope this will be an encouraging episode for those of us out there trying to figure out how to respond to the world around us as adults, let alone how to communicate about it with littles, but ultimately I hope this helps point you to Jesus, and remind you He is trustworthy no matter where you are. You matter. Your story matters. --- Connecting with Christie: Facebook Instagram // LSDR Instagram Website Episode Sponsor: Hopefuel Use the code SIMPLY15 at check out for 15% off your purchase Store (Affiliate link) Facebook Instagram References: Little Shoots, Deep Roots Wise for Salvation Quinn's Promise Rock Quinn Says Goodbye Momma Son Prayer Journal The Bible Recap - Book and Podcast John Mark's mother's home is the house where people were gathered when people were praying for Peter, also possibly where the last supper was held Building Faith at Home The original form of Proverbs 31 is an acrostic poem Erin Moon's response to the funky woman tweet The Bible Binge How you can start little from her website “Raise A Hallelujah” - Bethel “I Thank God” Maverick City Music Trillia Newbell's childrens' books: God's Very Good Idea and Creative God, Colorful Us Dorena Williamson's books: Colorfull, Thoughtfull, Gracefull, Pre-Orders!: The Celebration Place and Crowned with Glory The Garden, the Curtain and the Cross - Carl Laferton Phil Vischer videos VeggieTales Right Now Media When a student followed a rabbi, they followed them so closely “The Chosen” Scripture: Colossians 1:17- God holds all things together Job 1:21- God gives and takes away John 11:38-44- Jesus at Lazarus' tomb Luke 18:18-30, 1 Corinthians 13:12-, Ephesians 2:6-9, 1 Timothy 6:18-19- The kingdom is only partly here Psalm 27:13-14, Job 13:15, Daniel 3:17-18, Romans 8:28 -When everything hurts God is still good Isaiah 41:10, Hebrews 13:5-6, Psalm 23-God is still near Psalm 34:10, Matthew 7:11, Luke 12:24, John 14:26, 1 Corinthians 10:13, 2 Corinthians 9:8, Philippians 4:19- God is still providing John 16:33, 2 Corinthians 1:3-4, Psalm 23 -God comforts us Psalm 30:1-5, Psalm 30:11-12- Joy does come in the mourning Isaiah 40:11- carries a lamb on his shoulders 1 and 2 Samuel - life of David (Bible Project's video on these books are super helpful) 1 and 2 Chronicles - life of David (Bible Project's video on these books are super helpful) The Psalms (Bible Project) 1 Samuel 17- David & Goliath Amos (Bible Project again ;)) 1 Chronicles 13- David tries to go get the ark and it doesn't go well 1 Samuel 18-30- especially 27-29- David the land pirate (bad news bears) 1 Samuel 13:14,Acts 13:22 - God calls David to be a man after His own heart Proverbs 22:6, Romans 10:14-15, Titus 2:3, I have to learn to help them recognize His voice 1 Corinthians 11:3-16, Ephesians 5:21-33- The man is head of the household Matthew 28:19-20, Mark 16:15, Acts 1:8, 2 Timothy 2:2- We're called to make disciples 2 Timothy 1:5- Lois and Eunice and Timothy Acts 12:1-17- Peter escapes prison and comes to believers praying 1 Kings 11:1-2- Do not marry a Moabite woman. Hi friends! I'm so excited to be back with you for season THREE of the podcast! I cannot believe we are 2 years and 3 seasons in, but man the Lord is wild, isn't He? To start off this season, we have the absolutely wonderful and wildly talented Randall Goodgame. Mr. Randall is a little bit of a celebrity around my house because of how much my children love his music and his show, “Slugs and Bugs”. If you've never heard of it, the show itself is a lot like a Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood type environment where Mr. Randall and his real life friends and family, Andrew Peterson, Dr. Russell Moore, Scott Hamilton, Ellie Holcomb, Sissy Goff, Dorena Williamson and many, many more visit him and his puppet friends, the slugs and bugs at their workshop where they learn life lessons, talk about the mysteries of the Gospel, and how God can make Himself known in any of it as we all grow up together. The songs they share on the show and from the albums are saturated in God's Word which makes scripture memorization so accessible even for the youngest of children, as well as ways to help talk about hard and big topics happening in the world, mixed in with a whole lot of silliness too. In our conversation today, we get to hear about how Randall's struggle to engage conversations about the Gospel with his own children birthed in him a pursuit to use humor, story and song to engage them, and ultimately engage His own heart about these important things because it's worth the work. This conversation isn't just for parents or people with kids in their lives, we talk about how people who do not have kids in their lives can still impact those around them, and encourage ALL of us to press into the truth of Christ as we navigate hard things. When I was praying and thinking about how to start this season off, it just kept coming to me how important it was to engage the future of the Kingdom of God. I feel like there are so many of us that feel like we have to just get through the young years of kids, whether in passing in other environments or in our own homes, and then when they're older we can attempt to navigate big things with them. But the truth is, our kids haven't been hidden from big things. Life happens to them, just like it does to us. This pandemic has happened to them, as it's happening to us. Not to mention, how we engage our own hearts, pours out onto those we encounter and so it just felt so important to me, especially for the many kids that are getting ready to go back to school, to talk about these things, and present people and ideas to our simply stories family so that we might feel more equipped to press in where it feels awkward or hard. When we can break that down to a child's level, you might be surprised how much that impacts how you interact with adults as well. Jesus said to come to Him with faith like a child. Whether there are children in your life or not, you are HIS child. For those who have said yes to Jesus, you are a son or a daughter of the Most High God. You are perfectly and wonderfully made to display His creativity, and His love to the world. No matter where you've been, or what you're going through now, that gift to you cannot be taken away. What might it be like to ask your heart how to approach the Lord, let alone your neighbors like a child? I think that's probably going to provide a unique answer for everyone, but I think it's an interesting question to contemplate. You have a good Father who loves to engage with you. Even if it feels like there is nothing delightful in your life, He wants to hear about it. Maybe start right there. It matters to Him because your story matters to Him. You matter. Children of color are held in virtual bondage through the negative stereotypes that define them as threatening, violent, criminal, poor, and academically disengaged. Children of color internalize these stereotypes as guilt before they even enter the school. For many children, these stereotypes become a script that influences their behavior and inhibits their ability to be engaged learners. Guest Alexs Pate explains how we can rewrite the script and bridge that gap to create an environment of "innocence."
Today we have on the powerhouse author, speaker and writing coach Ally Fallon. Ally shares what her and her family’s covid experience has been like, bringing a baby into the world, living in California with the wildfires AND a pandemic and where her heart has been pulled in that season. When Ally and I had this conversation back in the first of December, I felt like we were having a strategy session for how to approach 2021. So. Much. has happened since that day, including Ally and her family moving across the country, releasing her new book The Power of Writing it Down, but obviously so much has happened within the American climate, and as a globe we continue to walk out the pandemic, work through the vaccination journey, variants, and just… honestly grappling with the fact that we’ve been at this for a year now. With all that being said, I feel like this conversation is really timely for a couple of reasons: We spend the first half of the conversation talking about how we have changed, for better or for worse, and how we have a choice to do something with that change as we fight forward. We spend the second half of this conversation talking through one big shift that took place in both of us this year, and that’s how we engage the conversation of race, what it looks like to lament and learn, and process what it looks like to be a white ally for our Black brothers and sisters. Because Alli is a coach, her new book, and pieces of its insights that she shares today are packed with practical takeaways for how to actually bring about life and thought change. It's TRULY fascinating, and I love that she walks us through how to apply that process in this episode. I love her encouragement, her honestly, and also her practical way of trying to invite people into a journey of hard work, by pulling back the layers and start small. There is such potential for resurrected life no matter where you are. No matter your heartbreak, your grief, the good you’ve seen, the hard you’ve been in, ALL of it carries possibility for transformation and being more alive on the other side of this season than you were going in it. Today we are kicking off our Advent series with Dr. Chris Williamson who is a local Pastor of Strong Tower Bible Church in Franlkin, TN. Pastor Chris is just the best, he’s wise, he’s profound, he’s hilarious, and he just tells it like it is and y’all, we are going to CHURCH today. We talk about the double edge sword of this Christmas story, where there’s a romance to the story we like to stick to, the cuteness of Christ and the holy Hallmark, as Pastor Chris says, but there is also suffering in this story. And while that can sometimes be disconcerting, I think this year, more than ever before, I find that so comforting. That our Savior entered the atmosphere in a season of simultaneous joy and pain. We spend time unpacking what we know from the Word and what we can just imagine because of the context and from being human what it must have been like during those days where a messenger of Light burst onto a dormant scene while Zechariah was going on about his daily life, and God met him in the mundane, and then it all broke loose. But no matter how chaotic any of it appeared to be then, or how chaotic it is now, God’s will cannot be thwarted. It is not in jeopardy. The Savior is still coming, praise God, He will come again. This is such a unique Advent season and we have a unique opportunity to respond to it as we long for the Light after such a dark year, during the darkest part of the year, we must fight for this hope, and we hope that this conversation can help hold the Light for y’all today. Wherever you are. However your day looks. I hope that every time you see a light turn on, you remember that His Light never fades, and He will fan even the smallest spark in you. You matter, friend. You are seen, you are known and you are so loved. Your story matters. *Our Advent series intro music is by Chris & Stephanie Teauge of Out of the Dust. In this episode of the Unseen Leadership podcast, Chandler Vannoy and Josh Hunter are joined by Dorena Williamson who is a proud mother, a passionate teacher, and a devoted bridge-builder. She is also the author of ColorFull, ThoughtFull, and GraceFull, which are children’s books that celebrate God’s diverse kingdom. During their conversation, they discuss what it means to be a bridge-builder, the necessity of listening and learning from others, and how to focus on pleasing God more than people. QUOTES FROM EPISODE 48: “Oftentimes, bridgebuilders get walked on because that is what bridges were designed for.” “The ultimate bridge builder was Jesus the Messiah. He gave his life to create a bridge for us to God.” “We must posture ourselves as listeners and learners.” “We need to do what we are called to do and that is not to please people, that is to aim to please God.” “Support and loyalty are not always the same thing.” “If someone is more loyal to me than they are to Christ, then I have failed them.” RESOURCES MENTIONED Designed to Lead by Eric Geiger and Kevin Peck Healing Racial Trauma: The Road to Resilience by Sheila Wise Rowe
In this weeks episode Amy and Mike talk with Dorena Williamson about her books Thoughtful, Gracefull and Colorful. Dorena Williamson is a bridge builder, speaker, writer, and worship leader who knows the power and beauty of racial awareness. She and her husband, Dr. Chris Williamson, planted Strong Tower Bible Church in Nashville, Tennessee, and have spent more than twenty years ministering to its richly diverse faith community. Dorena and Chris have four children. Why be colorblind when we can be colorFULL instead? Imani and Kayla are the best of friends who are learning to celebrate their different skin colors. As they look around them at the amazing colors in nature, they can see that their skin is another example of God's creativity! This joyful story takes a new approach to discussing race: instead of being colorblind, we can choose to celebrate each color God gave us and be colorFULL instead.

Can you imagine looking at a beautiful garden that has flowers with many different colors, textures and heights, but not being able to see the variations in color because you are color blind? That’s the way it is with people if one embraces the idea of color blindness. You don’t see the other person’s differences or the nuances that make them uniquely them. Affirmation: The nature of God’s great creation is one of diversity. I am not color blind. I see the colorful, wonderful and mystical variances that are expressed uniquely as each of us.

Everything we do at This Grit and Grace Life is seeking to understand. It is our goal to humble ourselves and listen, to be able to view the world through others' eyes, all eyes. We wanted to hear a voice from the black community and have a conversation allowing us to learn and understand what we may not. We feel we are in a land of emotional minefields; we want to know why and even more than that as women of faith, learn what we can do to become instruments of racial reconciliation. We are speaking to Dr. Zoe Shaw, a black woman, who is also a psychologist. In this episode she is not here in her professional capacity, but as a woman telling a personal story, her life experience, that of her family and her community. Blogger, influencer and venture capitalist Carrie Colbert had it all. And then she got pregnant. At 40. (And not exactly on purpose.) A year later, she found herself raising her daughter on her own, moving out of a flooded home and forging a new path - one that would NOT include a male counterpart, she swore. It makes sense that at the precise moment she decided to write off men entirely, she found the one. On this episode of Look Ma’ No Hands, Carrie makes a BIG announcement and tells us all about what her career looks like today with one almost-3-year-old in tow, a FIANCÉ (yes, she’s engaged!) and an unexpected quarantine. If anyone knows how to pivot, it’s Carrie, so if you’ve found yourself wandering in the unknown during this uncertain time, or if you’ve ever needed a reminder that life is what happens while you’re busy making other plans, you’ll love what she has to say. Follow Carrie on Insta @carriec.
As her bio states, Sharon Smith-Akinsanya is truly a force of nature. She took chances, made pivots and kept moving forward no matter what was happening. And, most critically, she understands that it is the relationships you build along the way that assist you when you need them most. As she calls it, “the power of a ‘million dollar rolodex'.” But truly authentic relationships require work and a willingness to give as much as you get. And that willingness to serve is what gave her the vision to develop the People of Color Career Fair in response to a significant strategic need in her region. The POC Career Fair along with the work she does through her consulting firm, Rae Mackenzie Group, in the diversity-equity-inclusion space serves to close the employment gap among people of color in the region in a way that is authentic, repeatable and sustainable. About the Guest: Sharon Smith-Akinsanya | CEO, Rae Mackenzie Group, and Founder, People Of Color Career Fair and the author of the upcoming book, COLORFULL, Competitive Strategies to Attract and Retain Top Talent Of Color---available in online in November and in bookstores everywhere in February 2021. Sharon Smith-Akinsanya is a force of nature whose life's work is to foster connectivity between corporations and People of Color by helping corporate leaders positon their companies in a way to attract, recruit, develop, and retain Talent of Color. Her proven successes are why Fortune 500 companies refer to her as their “secret weapon.” Sharon is an equity mentor, a diversity guru, and an anti-bias whisperer. She has an innate ability to address difficult topics without blame or shame. Her authenticity drives powerful, meaningful conversations on diversity, equity, and inclusion that many leaders never thought possible. Always a compelling speaker and advisor, Sharon can convince the most intractable audience to be more open-minded, even in the face of their own discomfort. From her early years as a media sales rep in markets that ignored Black consumers to creating media strategies for the legendary musician Prince, Sharon's vast expertise includes decades of honing strategy, attaining high-level results, and producing events with flawless execution. Today, Sharon is the CEO of Rae Mackenzie Group, Inc.--Minnesota's top diversity, equity, and inclusion marketing firm--and founder of the People Of Color Career Fair. Her work with Fortune 500 companies like U.S. Bank, Best Buy, Midco, Andersen Windows & Doors, Target, and more, centers on teaching corporations how to prioritize cultural connectivity as part of their retention strategy. By doing so, not only do companies strengthen relationships with current employees, but they also open opportunities to Talent of Color. Sharon believes in sparking big change from the inside-out and getting big results. Her innovative ideas create impactful opportunities for all involved. Through the People Of Color Career Fair, Sharon turned her desire to connect Professionals of Color with life-changing careers into a wildly successful semiannual hiring event attended by hundreds at a time, and supported by the top political and business leaders in the region. Although Sharon's firm focuses on initiatives in the Minneapolis-St. Paul region, she firmly believes that by solving problems in her own backyard, she and her clients can lead by example. She wants the companies she supports to become DEI rockstars and serve as examples to other corporations on how to take the journey. Surprise friends! You’re getting an extra episode of the Simply Stories Podcast this week! There was so much happening in my conversation with Dorena, we had to split it into two. So whether you’re traveling for the holidays, still working, or preparing a meal, let’s pick up with Dorena and I talking about how history’s narrative is being broadened by hearing it being told from new perspectives, especially from the perspective of people of color. This quote from our conversation is going to stay with me for a LONG time: “If parents [during Jim Crow], would have the audacity to bring their children to see a fellow image bearer treated like this, why can we not read our children these stories? Why can we not subject ourselves to the discomfort of unpacking history so that we can do better because we can’t do better if we don’t learn from the past, and we can’t learn from the past if we don’t acknowledge all of it.” There is so much grace as we learn, friends. I’m so grateful that Dorena presented a seat at this table to me, and I hope you felt welcomed there too. Its true that we cannot fix or change history, but we most certainly can be attentive to how others experience it, what we uproot and sow into the present and how that affects future generations. They who have ears to hear, let them hear. Resources: Dorena’s books: Colorfull, Thoughtfull, Gracefull “Harriet” movie (find showings here!) The Central Park Five aka Central Park Jogger Case // documentary “When They See Us” /// commentary on film vs. reality New Yorker article (not Washington Post) “Who Speaks for Crazy Horse?” Charles and Susan Robinson : The Red Road Pocohontas (The person, not the movie. This article from the Smithsonian is FASCINATING about how the story we’ve also known may not actually be what happened. Additionally, I'd love to know what Native Americans think of the animated film... If anyone wants to enlighten me, I’d love to listen!) -Squanto -Sacagawea -Civil Rights Room at the Nashville Public Library downtown -Brown v. The Board of Education of Topeka Knoxville, TN’s super delayed desegregation of schools (Brown v. Board was in 1954, the ruling that officially STARTED desegregation in Knoxville was called Goss v. Board of Education, Knoxville took place in 1963. The story I told about my Mom seeing dummies in blackface hanging in the trees at her high school took place in 1965. This article details how the city was not fully “under compliance of the ruling” and “officially” desegregated until the early 1970’s. The article is an eye-opening read. -Our side bar about teaching children about their bodies, I can’t suggest this book enough: God Made All of Me: A Book that helps children protect their bodies -Dorena’s tweet about the little boy bullied for his skin being the color of “poop” -Internment camps for Japanese Americans -Tamera Alexander: Belmont Series, Belle Meade, Carnton -- fictional stories based on real people and real events during and after the war in Nashville, TN. (The two books I mention about Belle Meade are 1) this one with the attack on BMP and the Irish American immigrant 2) this one tells the story of a gal who attends Fisk University and joins the Jubilee Singers on their tour that saved the school --which is a true story-- that is FASCINATING.) -Freedmen Schools -Haven: The Dramatic Story of 1,000 WWII Refugees and How They Came to America by Ruth Gruber -Fort Ontario in Oswego, NY, the haven/camp for the refugees. I misquoted the number of refugees who came on the ship 984 made it. This article I just read called their process of being in America “their being given sanctuary on an old army base in Oswego, New York.” Which. Yes. But there were people who had relatives in America that wanted to take them home and they were. not. allowed. to. leave. Whether we like it or not, they were interred until the government could figure out what to do after being literal prisoners and victims of the Nazi party. I’m not saying it wasn’t complicated, but let’s not mince words. ::Off soap box:: This article is beautiful because it equally (towards the bottom) shares the accounts of people who were there who share how hard and painful it was, but also how many people of Oswego tried to care for them regardless of the literal fence in between them. Read the book, y’all. There’s a lot of freedom and joy in the story, but there’s a hot mess of not caring for people as hurting humans in there too. We can hold them both in the same hand, just like the rest of this conversation about history and how we approach the narrative. -Crazy Rich Asians: movie // book (which I JUST learned is a trilogy! Here’s a link to all three.) -Washington Post Article I read about using the song “Yellow” by Coldplay -“Black Panther” // the movie, and an article highlighting its power -Ann Voskamp and Lisa Sharon Harper -Enneagram 2 -The Great Migration -Reconstruction (The Act of 1867; some perspective from Time Magazine about what went wrong- I’m a history buff, I could do this all day long ;)) Thank you, B&H, for publishing these incredible books and for allowing me to read little bits from them on the podcast! Today my conversation is with children’s book author, activist, and just generally amazing woman of God, Dorena Williamson. Dorena’s books, Colorfull, Thoughtfull, and Gracefull, take big things like skin color, living with special needs, and homelessness and breaks them down into verbiage that communicates to the heart of children the gift of God’s unique design of His Kingdom, practicing compassion, and sharing blessings with others. What’s even more beautiful about them though, is that they speak to the hearts of adults. These books have become staples in our home in helping equip our children, and ourselves, with more kind and compassionate words about our friends and neighbors who do not look or live like us. Dorena’s voice has played a significant role in a journey God has brought me on to see our world with fresh eyes, and let me just say that on the other side of this conversation with her, I am not the same, and I am grateful. Dorena created such a grace filled space for me to ask questions, learn and stretch what I’ve always known. There are so many incredible take-aways about how God calls us to deny ourselves, embrace discomfort, to pursue humility and never stop learning for the sake of unifying the body of Christ. We go so deep and so wide in this conversation, it actually will come to you in two parts! So pull up a chair, friend and join us for part 1.Let’s press in. Let’s be willing to do some possibly uncomfortable and humbling work. It is worthy work to ask God to open our eyes to see the people He made more clearly. “For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.” (Ephesians 2:10 NLT). Christine sits down with Dorena Williamson, a pastor's wife and mom of four, who is passionate about helping others revel in the beauty of the diversity of God's kingdom. She calls this passion "bridge building": seeking to do justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with God. Dorena shares what bridge building practically looks like in her life, how God is expanding the reach of her message through children, and the truth she turns to when she feels hopeless and wants to give up. My guest for The Happy Hour #215 is Dorena Williamson. Dorena is a bridge builder and author of ColorFull, ThoughtFull and GraceFull, children's books that celebrate God's diverse kingdom. This series is inspired from twenty-three years as first lady of Nashville's Strong Tower Bible Church, a multiracial faith community Dorena and her husband Dr. Chris planted in 1995. Dorena and her husband have four wonderful children. Dorena and I start off the show talking about how a move to Nashville to further her husband Chris' rap career, ended up leading them to found a multi-racial church in a civil war rich town! Dorena shares how she had no idea that God would use all her years raising kids and leading worship to combine her passions and experiences into something bigger down the road. When we're itching to jump to the finish line because we want to know where God is leading us, Dorena encourages cultivating faithfulness, and describes how this can bring renewal of faith. Dorena and I then discuss the importance and value of having honest conversations about race, and recognizing the diversity of colors God created vs. being "colorblind". We also talk about how we as parents should be the first voices to talk about race with our kids, and the different ways we can make this happen. Friends, my hope is that through the show today you feel encouraged and empowered to have conversations about racial equality and bridge building. Check out the resources below, including Dorena's fantastic books, and connect with Dorena and me as well! {You can listen to the show HERE, and make sure you never miss a Happy Hour, subscribe using your favorite podcast app (ie. iTunes, Google Play). We’re having a party! On August 21 at the Evereve store, a contemporary fashion and styling company for women in Franklin, Tennessee, we are celebrating the release of Darlene’s new book Raising Great Girls! Combining Evereve, which provides a unique shopping experience for moms who want to feel good about themselves, with a book about moms raising confident and capable daughters felt like the perfect fit. To give you a little preview of what you will experience at this event, Darlene and Julie brought in two special ladies from the Evereve store, stylist Dorena Williamson, and store manager Shelley Kirkman, to chat about how moms can lose their sense of style during the crazy season of motherhood. Facing busyness, some days apathy, and even a mom’s changed body can create dread while shopping for yourself. Can someone say, “Amen!"? You'll get to know these ladies as they offer practical advice on finding your style while also sharing about what makes Evereve special. Megan Tamte (co-founder of Evereve) has said, “When you give so much to your family, just getting dressed can be a big win. As the fashion authority for moms, Evereve strives to empower you every day to pull on the jeans that make you look amazing and take a step forward, wherever you’re going.” If you’re near Franklin, TN on 8/21, join us at the launch party from 6-8PM at the Evereve store! It will be a night that Julie and Darlene celebrate the launch of Darlene’s new book (and will have them available for purchase at the event) and maybe do a little shopping too. RSVP here if you can come; we would love to meet you in person! If you can’t make the party, you can still grab Dar's book here! To learn more about Evereve, click here to find store locations or sign up for their Trendsend program! You can also follow them on their social media accounts and find inspiration to step up your style now! Click here to determine your body type as we discussed on the episode! We can’t end our show notes without giving you an opportunity to buy Dorena’s children’s books about the beauty of diversity in race and disabilities. We love them and believe you will too. You can get ColorFull here, and ThoughtFull will be released on 8/15/18! Viewing in an app? Full show notes here. Quote of the episode: "Dress shabbily and they remember the dress; dress impeccably and they remember the woman" Coco Chanel You will also want to go back and listen to our other show about fashion, just for the laugh! Today my guest is the dynamic, Dorena Williamson. Dorena is a children's book author and we are covering the topic of talking to your kids about race on today's episode. I tried to ask all the questions you or I might want to ask, but might be too afraid to ask. I took one for the team. It was a rich conversation that left me feeling so empowered to cover this topic with my kids. And definitely check out her children's books, including, "ColorFull", to help broach the topic with your kids. It's such a beautiful book.
