On today's show we chat with Randall Goodgame! Known for his Slugs & Bugs family music series—one of the most revered and critically lauded brands in Christian family entertainment—Randall's Scripture Hymnal is a collection of more than 100 word-for-word Bible passages set to original music. The hardbound volume releases October 21 from Rabbit Room Press. Randall conceived the Scripture Hymnal as a practical and creative tool to help make the Bible more accessible for all ages. Showcasing newly composed piano accompaniment for more than 100 Bible verses, the hymnal features songwriting contributions from Ellie Holcomb, Ginny Owens, Andrew Osenga and Dwan Hill, among many others. Along with discussing the importance of Scripture memorization for both children and adults, Randall can share how he hopes the hymnal will impact churches and families for years to come. scripturehymnal.com @scripturehymnal @randallgoodgame christianmusicguys.com @christianmusicguys
Randall Goodgame is one of my favorite people. For one thing, he is unfailingly nice, one of the nicest guys I know. And he's enormously talented. He began his musical career while still an undergraduate in the 1990s playing keyboards for a southern rock band called Black Creek that had regional success and developed a cult following even though it released only a single live album. But, man, that album rocks. Randall's senior thesis at Birmingham Southern College was an account of his year on the road with the band. From there he released a couple of independent solo albums before finding success as a songwriter for such Christian artists as Andrew Peterson, Caedmon's Call, and Jason Gray. As an artist, he toured with these artists as well as Jars of Clay. His career took yet another turn when he collaborated with Andrew Peterson to produce a children's album called “Slugs and Bugs and Lullabies.” This album led to more “Slugs and Bugs” albums, albums that combine a high artistic sensibility with solid biblical teaching. His album “Sing The Bible with Slugs and Bugs” takes Bible verses – not paraphrases, but word for word Scripture – and sets them to music. The success of that album led to his latest project, “Scripture Hymnal.” Scripture Hymnal contains more than 100 Bible passages set to music. The book has sheet music, and a link to fully produced versions of every song in the book. It's really a massive project, and one that is sure to have a big impact on the church and take its place in a growing movement of modern hymn writing we are seeing today. It was a pleasure to talk with Randall Goodgame. We had this conversation last week, via zoom. He joined me from his studio near Nashville. That brings to a close my interview with Randall Goodgame. His newest project is ”Scripture Hymnal.” I've got a copy of it myself, and I couldn't recommend it more highly. The producer for today's program is Jeff McIntosh. Until next time, may God bless you.

When we celebrate Christmas, we usually concentrate on a very specific moment in time when a young married couple traveled to Bethlehem and delivered a child in a manger. But Christmas didn't start there. We can trace the promises and events of our Savior's arrival all the way back to the beginning of time. On today's episode of the Great Stories podcast, Charles Morris returns to Christmas special from 2017 where he traced the line from Christmas to Genesis with Lee Strobel (The Case for Christ), Sally Lloyd-Jones (The Jesus Storybook Bible), Randall Goodgame (Sing the Bible), and Senate Chaplain Barry Black (Nothing to Fear).
Teach children about Jesus' return and why it's so surprising. This beautifully-illustrated hardback book by singer and TV presenter Randall Goodgame is based on the parable in Luke 12 v 35–38. It teaches children that Jesus will return and when he does there will be an amazing party where ... SURPRISE! ... he will serve his faithful servants! Jesus didn't tell us when that party will be, but we can make sure that we're ready for it by loving him and loving his people while we wait. Published by the Good Book Company for Children

Today, we are going to talk more about unpacking the gift of Emmanuel, God with us, with one of my absolute favorite people, Dorena Williamson. Exactly one hundred episodes ago, Dorena became a part of the simply stories life. She's a children's book author, a writer, a pastor's wife and incredible preacher herself whose passion for God's people and pursuing Biblically diverse unity in the body of Christ has impacted so many people, including myself, and my family. Her books provide verbiage for examining the language we use about our fellow image bearers and modeling those things to our children so that we can better love and serve like Jesus. We talk about what that looks like in this season, the incredible sacrifice of Christ's coming at Christmas, and so much more. Looking back on what all you'll get to hear in this episode, I just am personally remembering these few takeaways from this conversation: -The call to portray a gospel-centered view of others when we give and serve others around the holidays. That we don't place ourselves higher than others, we just learn how to see and engage felt needs in the communities where we live, and love and serve them like a true neighbor. One major way we can do this is by carefully choosing our words and offering a perspective for our children that shows care for others; those that we are serving are or who we may see that are struggling are also part of the body of Christ. -Pressing into uncomfortable conversations with the children in our lives about what they are inevitably going to encounter or have already encountered with a Gospel centered perspective. Dorena reminds us so beautifully “we are the people of God, we can do this,” And whether its about how we treat others, skin color, sex, friends who have different abilities or a whole long list of other things happening in life, if we don't engage with our children about these things, something or someone will. The Lord will equip us, and He will meet us in it. -We break down a good bit of the conversation with Jesus around the story of the Good Samaritan and the heart behind the question “who is my neighbor?” I'm still processing who are my neighbors because the Lord has put them in my path, not because they're the most comfortable people I feel prepared to connect with, but because the Lord saw fit to place them and me for such a time as this. Will I say yes? This is such a rich conversation, and I cannot wait for you to hear it. I hope and pray that wherever you are, you find new ways to experience Emmanuel, God with us. I pray that we all choose to press into His presence, and choose to grow because of the light He shines in the dark. God's not finished with any of us. You matter, friend. And your story matters. Hi friends! I'm so excited to be back with you for season THREE of the podcast! I cannot believe we are 2 years and 3 seasons in, but man the Lord is wild, isn't He? To start off this season, we have the absolutely wonderful and wildly talented Randall Goodgame. Mr. Randall is a little bit of a celebrity around my house because of how much my children love his music and his show, “Slugs and Bugs”. If you've never heard of it, the show itself is a lot like a Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood type environment where Mr. Randall and his real life friends and family, Andrew Peterson, Dr. Russell Moore, Scott Hamilton, Ellie Holcomb, Sissy Goff, Dorena Williamson and many, many more visit him and his puppet friends, the slugs and bugs at their workshop where they learn life lessons, talk about the mysteries of the Gospel, and how God can make Himself known in any of it as we all grow up together. The songs they share on the show and from the albums are saturated in God's Word which makes scripture memorization so accessible even for the youngest of children, as well as ways to help talk about hard and big topics happening in the world, mixed in with a whole lot of silliness too. In our conversation today, we get to hear about how Randall's struggle to engage conversations about the Gospel with his own children birthed in him a pursuit to use humor, story and song to engage them, and ultimately engage His own heart about these important things because it's worth the work. This conversation isn't just for parents or people with kids in their lives, we talk about how people who do not have kids in their lives can still impact those around them, and encourage ALL of us to press into the truth of Christ as we navigate hard things. When I was praying and thinking about how to start this season off, it just kept coming to me how important it was to engage the future of the Kingdom of God. I feel like there are so many of us that feel like we have to just get through the young years of kids, whether in passing in other environments or in our own homes, and then when they're older we can attempt to navigate big things with them. But the truth is, our kids haven't been hidden from big things. Life happens to them, just like it does to us. This pandemic has happened to them, as it's happening to us. Not to mention, how we engage our own hearts, pours out onto those we encounter and so it just felt so important to me, especially for the many kids that are getting ready to go back to school, to talk about these things, and present people and ideas to our simply stories family so that we might feel more equipped to press in where it feels awkward or hard. When we can break that down to a child's level, you might be surprised how much that impacts how you interact with adults as well. Jesus said to come to Him with faith like a child. Whether there are children in your life or not, you are HIS child. For those who have said yes to Jesus, you are a son or a daughter of the Most High God. You are perfectly and wonderfully made to display His creativity, and His love to the world. No matter where you've been, or what you're going through now, that gift to you cannot be taken away. What might it be like to ask your heart how to approach the Lord, let alone your neighbors like a child? I think that's probably going to provide a unique answer for everyone, but I think it's an interesting question to contemplate. You have a good Father who loves to engage with you. Even if it feels like there is nothing delightful in your life, He wants to hear about it. Maybe start right there. It matters to Him because your story matters to Him. You matter. With this in mind, how can parents use the gifts of story and song as a way of shaping families and their children? At our National Conference, Russell Moore lead a panel discussion with Sally Lloyd-Jones, Andrew Peterson, Randall Goodgame, Phil Vischer on what role the arts can play in family life.
