I am so thrilled to welcome back to the podcast, the one and only Dorena Williamson! Dorena is a woman of deep faith, with a passion for building the kingdom of God and living a legacy of faith as a minister, a mama, a pastor's wife, and a woman of impactful and instructive words. She is the author of 8 children's books that all provide beautiful insight into the heart of God and scripture's call to live in diversity and humility as we learn and grow together in the world. Whether that diversity is found in differing racial or ethnic communities and cultures, to others living with visible or invisible disabilities, or on the margins socioeconomically. She encourages children and the big people who love them, in every story that she writes to celebrate how God made them, and to delight in His world that He made and all those made in His image. Her most recent book is called I Know Who I Am. It is a book of scriptural affirmations for kids. It is designed to serve as a companion to come alongside families and those that love kids with words that contain truth about them, about the Lord, and to see all of God's image bearers represented in the pages from around the world! It gives beautiful verbiage for children to repeat over themselves and to speak over other children of all ages they encounter as they walk through the hills and valleys and changes of life. My kids absolutely loved it, and it would be a perfect addition to a morning or evening routine for kiddos that are starting back to school! In this conversation, Dorena also shares her heart so beautifully about where God has her in her lament as a leader in her church, a Mama raising Black kids, and the world around her. She invites us to consider how all Believers can lean in to the reality of what is before communities and their daily fears and concerns and how to bear one another's burdens together at the feet of Jesus. She offers an invitation to lean in to humility and honor towards others as we experience beauty, hope, tragedy, and all that is found on Earth this side of Heaven together. None of us are perfect, we will make mistakes, but God honors our learning, our choices to lean in and have Him show us His heart for us and for others. He has so much to show us. Always remember, you matter, and your story matters. Just as an FYI, we recorded this episode right in the midst of our communities' grief over the Covenant shooting in the Spring. We mention it briefly in the beginning of the episode, but we spend a little more time (around 5-7 minutes) discussing its impact on our community around 40 minutes in. If that is a tender place for you, I just want to be sensitive to that and give you that heads up. We fairly quickly transition to Dorena sharing about how to be the body of Christ in the midst of seasons of communal lament. It's a powerful word, not solely about that tragedy, but about how to lock arms and shields of faith with others as humans made in God's image walking this weary land together until we all go home. I love children's books because even though they are meant for kids, I always get something out of their messages. Sometimes the beauty and simplicity of the text and illustrations brings me to tears! One of my all time favorite children's book authors is Dorena Williamson. We have many of her books throughout our house, so I was so excited to have the opportunity to sit down and talk with her! Dorena is the author of 8 children's books, her most current book is called I Know Who I am, which is all about teaching kids their identity in Christ from a young age. We get to hear about her heart behind the book and the illustrations on each page. Dorena is passionate about celebrating multiculturalism and diversity so we have a really good conversation about those things—why diversity matters, how to talk about representation and diversity with your kids, and how it all points back to God and how he made all his children in his image.Connect with Dorena:https://dorenawilliamson.com/@dorenawilliamson Links Mentioned:https://dorenawilliamson.com/books/i-know-who-i-am/https://dorenawilliamson.com/books/Our Sponsors:* Check out HelloFresh: https://www.hellofresh.com/Privacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

"So, if we cannot trust God to keep bad things from happening to us, how do we trust God at all?"In this episode of the Rooted Conference Podcast you'll hear Tish Harrison Warren describing the practices of weeping, watching, and working as ways to help the teenagers you love when they are in a season of grief. She wants us to invite teenagers to read the Psalms regularly, giving them a vocabulary of emotions and leading them to trust the Savior who went through all those emotions for us. Lament in particular is a practice Americans tend to want to avoid, but the Bible invites us to voice our sorrow, angst, anguish, and even doubt directly to God. Warren also invites us to be joyfully expectant that God is at work, and finally, to consider how we might join him in the work of the Kingdom that he is already doing. I tell stories of import and consequence and try to contextualize them to make them stand out for how they're still relevant for others today.” He shares with us today his story of his experiences growing up, and later through becoming a Christian in high school through a predominately white evangelical church where he began the strange dance of growing in his faith and knowledge of Christ, while most commonly being one of the only people of color in the room. Dr. Jemar's story, and his work in trying to call racism out into the light and then address it, especially within the church has been wildly transformative in my life. His book Color of Compromise: The Truth About the American Church's Complicity in Racism was so incredibly eye opening and galvanizing. His next book How to Fight Racism: Courageous Christianity and the Journey Towards Racial Justice takes that to the next level. There's an adult version, and now a youth edition. In our conversation today, Dr. Jemar shares some of the key racial justice ideologies of his books, and how to begin addressing some of the pressing issues we may not even be aware of in our own churches, families, and communities. We want to examine the foundations that have been laid historically and see how they are still impacting people and communities today so that if it's being repeated we do something about it or that we take great stewarding care to dare not repeat it again. One key point Dr. Jemar makes is that much of the dialogue around racial justice in many Christian spaces is heavy on the diagnosis and light on the prescription. He faces that issue head on in his works, and in this conversation, saturated in scripture and full of a desire to see Christians grow in this area and in their faith as a whole. Dr. Jemar challenges us, equips. and encourages us with how we engage this work of racial justice well and not add to the hurt in our attempts to help. There is so much that is challenging about this conversation, my friends, but this is hard and holy work. I hope this conversation galvanizes you today, and that wherever the Lord leads you in your response, you would grow in your knowledge of Him, His love for you, and His love for all of His creation. You matter to Him. Your neighbor matters to Him. Your stories matter. In our kick off of the 2022 season, co-hosts Mike and Amy talk with author Dorena Williamson about her new book, Crowned with Glory. The narrative around Black hair hasn't always been a celebratory one. In fact, Black women and girls have faced hair discrimination everywhere, from schools to the workplace to the Olympic Games. In CROWNED WITH GLORY (on sale 1/25/22; WaterBrook), bestselling author Dorena Williamson flips this harmful narrative on its head by telling a beautiful story of self-love, affirmation, and God's love for His unique creations that will inspire children of color and enlighten people of all ethnicities. Through the story of Azira, a young Black girl full of spirit and talent, Williamson highlights the Black hair experience—from combing out big hair and visiting the salon to wearing a satin hair wrap for bed and braiding hair to swim. As Azira rocks her God-given beauty and expresses her uniqueness with fun hairstyles, she grows in confidence and experiences the joy of self-love. Written in bold and lyrical verse, Williamson draws on scriptures such as 1 Corinthians 11:15 (“…if a woman has long hair, it is her glory”) and Psalm 8:5 (“You have made them a little lower than the angels and crowned them with glory and honor”) to offer this ode to Black hair and Black girl joy. Illustrated by Shellene Rodney, this delightful resource is ideal for children ages 4-8 and their adults who enjoy stories that celebrate diversity and positive self-image. After reading Crowned with Glory, young readers will be empowered to always embrace and love exactly who God created them to be. Dorena Williamson is a speaker, bestselling writer, church planter, and bridge builder whose work has been featured in Christianity Today and Crosswalk. She writes stories that celebrate all colors, build cultural bridges, and motivate lasting change for children and their parents. Williamson's previous titles include ColorFull, ThoughtFull, and GraceFull. She and her husband, Chris, have four children. Visit her website at www.dorenawilliamson.com.
Today, we are going to talk more about unpacking the gift of Emmanuel, God with us, with one of my absolute favorite people, Dorena Williamson. Exactly one hundred episodes ago, Dorena became a part of the simply stories life. She's a children's book author, a writer, a pastor's wife and incredible preacher herself whose passion for God's people and pursuing Biblically diverse unity in the body of Christ has impacted so many people, including myself, and my family. Her books provide verbiage for examining the language we use about our fellow image bearers and modeling those things to our children so that we can better love and serve like Jesus. We talk about what that looks like in this season, the incredible sacrifice of Christ's coming at Christmas, and so much more. Looking back on what all you'll get to hear in this episode, I just am personally remembering these few takeaways from this conversation: -The call to portray a gospel-centered view of others when we give and serve others around the holidays. That we don't place ourselves higher than others, we just learn how to see and engage felt needs in the communities where we live, and love and serve them like a true neighbor. One major way we can do this is by carefully choosing our words and offering a perspective for our children that shows care for others; those that we are serving are or who we may see that are struggling are also part of the body of Christ. -Pressing into uncomfortable conversations with the children in our lives about what they are inevitably going to encounter or have already encountered with a Gospel centered perspective. Dorena reminds us so beautifully “we are the people of God, we can do this,” And whether its about how we treat others, skin color, sex, friends who have different abilities or a whole long list of other things happening in life, if we don't engage with our children about these things, something or someone will. The Lord will equip us, and He will meet us in it. -We break down a good bit of the conversation with Jesus around the story of the Good Samaritan and the heart behind the question “who is my neighbor?” I'm still processing who are my neighbors because the Lord has put them in my path, not because they're the most comfortable people I feel prepared to connect with, but because the Lord saw fit to place them and me for such a time as this. Will I say yes? This is such a rich conversation, and I cannot wait for you to hear it. I hope and pray that wherever you are, you find new ways to experience Emmanuel, God with us. I pray that we all choose to press into His presence, and choose to grow because of the light He shines in the dark. God's not finished with any of us. You matter, friend. And your story matters. Today I have the absolute pleasure of sharing with you my conversation that I got to have with the wonderful Kayla Craig. Kayla is the author and creator of Liturgies for Parents, as well as her recent book To Light the Way: A Collection of Prayers and Liturgies for Parents. Today, Kayla shares the introduction of liturgical prayers into her faith life as she was up to her eyes in a situation where one of her children's lives was hanging in the balance. Someone gave her a book of prayers that helped anchor her in that season when she was exhausted, scared, wrestling and desperately needed the Lord, but didn't know how to find the words to pray. The prayers she found in that book of those who had been heartbroken and in desperate need of hope from the Father before, gave her the words she needed right when she needed them. From that experience, she began to pour out her heart and write real life prayers, for real life people walking through the good, bad and the ugly of being a broken human raising broken humans. Kayla invites us to soak in the deep love of God, and to see it in all things because His presence is in all things. Kayla also shares what her experience of being a parent of a blended family with a medically fragile daughter, as well as her black, brown and white siblings, and how her faith has been pushed to parent by faith, and to show that faith to her kids. As you walk into your Thanksgiving week, I hope this episode encourages you and helps you to know that no matter what you are walking in to this holiday season, you'll know how much God loves you, is near to you, and that you are not alone. I pray wherever this episode finds you friend, that you remember 3 things: The Lord will complete the work He has begun in you. It is never too late for that journey to begin in you. Dorena Williamson's journey to becoming a writer was an unexpected one and began when she as a mom noticed a dearth of literature that offered the representation for her Black children. And if she did find books that featured characters of color, the faith element was missing. So she began praying, "God, how can you use me to have an impact in this area of addressing race and colorblindness?" The answer to this prayer was that Dorena became a children's author, starting with her 2018 book ColorFull: Celebrating the Colors God Gave Us. She is now one of the featured authors in the inaugural year of IVP Kids with her newest book The Celebration Place which offers a captivating vision of the church as God intended. You will love hearing from this delightful, faithful writer who has had to push against everything from imposter syndrome to apathy about racial issues in the industry, and in so doing has created books that both children and adults can treasure. About the Guest:Dorena Williamson has a passion for all children to hear the message of God's diverse kingdom. She writes children's books that adults also enjoy and is the author of ColorFull, ThoughtFull, and GraceFull. Today on the podcast, we have book editor, author, professional encourager and just all around amazing human, Amanda Cleary Eastep. I got to meet Amanda several years ago at a writing conference when she was part of a panel representing Moody Publishing. During this conversation she shares what it's like to be a book editor at Moody Publishers, as well as a middle-grade books author, which means she writes books for kids ages 8-12, and we look at what draws us as people to stories that captivate children and adults alike with their unique humor, whimsy, wonder, fun and freedom. We talk quite a bit about the concept of the moral imagination, and how stories can touch parts of us and unlock parts of our imagination and our faith, how we engage good and evil and more. The master of this process is Jesus Himself. His stories affect us emotionally, intellectually, and hold space for us to place ourselves in a story and decide who we will be because of it. Amanda is such a kind and wise woman who is still figuring out how to surrender her life and her dreams to Jesus, and I loved getting to hear how modeling honesty, humility, and just imperfectly but persistently expressing love to the kids in your life matters more than we know. As a Mom, step-Mom, working Mom, and all the things, I love Amanda's reminder that kids may bear witness to some of your greatest failures, but they also can have a front row seat to grace and redemption in your life and that's a story they need to know. I also appreciate how Amanda brought up how to engage kids who are NOT readers with stories whether that's about discussing movies, stories of people in your family or historical stories from where you're from or somewhere they're not, we are surrounded by stories that can engage the hearts and faith of kids. We also round out this episode with my daughter coming on, again, to interview “Ms. Amanda,” and it's sweet and hilarious to hear our girl's insights. Amanda very patiently talked with NB and me about her real life experiences with tornados, feelings and faith and it's just the sweetest. Hi friends! I'm so excited to be back with you for season THREE of the podcast! I cannot believe we are 2 years and 3 seasons in, but man the Lord is wild, isn't He? To start off this season, we have the absolutely wonderful and wildly talented Randall Goodgame. Mr. Randall is a little bit of a celebrity around my house because of how much my children love his music and his show, “Slugs and Bugs”. If you've never heard of it, the show itself is a lot like a Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood type environment where Mr. Randall and his real life friends and family, Andrew Peterson, Dr. Russell Moore, Scott Hamilton, Ellie Holcomb, Sissy Goff, Dorena Williamson and many, many more visit him and his puppet friends, the slugs and bugs at their workshop where they learn life lessons, talk about the mysteries of the Gospel, and how God can make Himself known in any of it as we all grow up together. The songs they share on the show and from the albums are saturated in God's Word which makes scripture memorization so accessible even for the youngest of children, as well as ways to help talk about hard and big topics happening in the world, mixed in with a whole lot of silliness too. In our conversation today, we get to hear about how Randall's struggle to engage conversations about the Gospel with his own children birthed in him a pursuit to use humor, story and song to engage them, and ultimately engage His own heart about these important things because it's worth the work. This conversation isn't just for parents or people with kids in their lives, we talk about how people who do not have kids in their lives can still impact those around them, and encourage ALL of us to press into the truth of Christ as we navigate hard things. When I was praying and thinking about how to start this season off, it just kept coming to me how important it was to engage the future of the Kingdom of God. I feel like there are so many of us that feel like we have to just get through the young years of kids, whether in passing in other environments or in our own homes, and then when they're older we can attempt to navigate big things with them. But the truth is, our kids haven't been hidden from big things. Life happens to them, just like it does to us. This pandemic has happened to them, as it's happening to us. Not to mention, how we engage our own hearts, pours out onto those we encounter and so it just felt so important to me, especially for the many kids that are getting ready to go back to school, to talk about these things, and present people and ideas to our simply stories family so that we might feel more equipped to press in where it feels awkward or hard. When we can break that down to a child's level, you might be surprised how much that impacts how you interact with adults as well. Jesus said to come to Him with faith like a child. Whether there are children in your life or not, you are HIS child. For those who have said yes to Jesus, you are a son or a daughter of the Most High God. You are perfectly and wonderfully made to display His creativity, and His love to the world. No matter where you've been, or what you're going through now, that gift to you cannot be taken away. What might it be like to ask your heart how to approach the Lord, let alone your neighbors like a child? I think that's probably going to provide a unique answer for everyone, but I think it's an interesting question to contemplate. You have a good Father who loves to engage with you. Today I’m honored to share my conversation with the incredible Lindsey Krink. Lindsey is a street chaplain, author, housing rights advocate and the co-founder of Open Table Nashville, an interfaith outreach non-profit serving the homeless community. Her beautiful and poignant book Praying With Our Feet: Pursuing Justice and Healing on the Streets shares her faith journey and personal evolution as she began to see the Gospel come alive under bridges, and the words of the Old Testament prophets make themselves known in tent cities, and in the shivering shoulders of those caring for one another trying to survive on the fringes of society. In this powerful episode, Lindsey shares with us a little bit about the stigmas and assumptions that are made about people experiencing homelessness, as well as some of the stories she has seen and experienced, and where she has seen God’s heart for people come alive on the fringes with the least of these. There are so many narratives that surround lives that we don’t fully understand, and Lindsey brings the practical and the prayer provoking of how we can intersect this particular crisis that affects so many. From how we can better treat fellow image bearers with dignity to practical ideas for what to keep in your car, and how to get involved in your own neighborhood, there is so much packed into this episode. Lindsey’s heart is for us all to take the opportunity to examine our call from Christ to love our neighbor, to nurture a fire in our belly and in our bones to light up the world for justice and love in Jesus’ name. As we talk about often on this podcast, there is no limit to what the Lord can do with a heart surrendered to Him. I hope and pray that this episode presents good questions for you to consider, and also presents opportunities for you to engage God’s creation in a more full and compassionate way, however God may lead you to do so in your own season, place and time. You matter. Your neighbor, houseless or homed, matters. Your story matters. ----- Connecting with Lindsey Krinks (and Open Table Nashville): -Instagram -Her book: Praying With Our Feet: Pursuing Justice and Healing on the Streets -Instagram for Open Table -Facebook for Open Table -Where to Turn Nashville Help Guide -Open Table Nashville // their amazon wishlist // how to volunteer with them -”The Contributor” her husband’s newspaper that provides jobs (and dignity) for neighbors experiencing homelessness Episode Sponsor: Hopefuel Store Link Instagram Facebook Use the code SIMPLY15 for 15% off your purchase! One of the first steps towards anti-racism is learning from the everyday experiences of people of color. This Black History Month, I’m speaking with Black women of different backgrounds and life stages, listening to their stories, and elevating their voices. Dorena Williamson and I are chatting today about her experience as a best-selling children’s author! Dorena shares the inspiration behind her writing and gives powerful encouragement for women of color aspiring to be published. We’ll also talk about our shared experience as pastor’s wives and how each of us, no matter our story, can continue to show up in the face of discouragement and doubt. In this episode of the Unseen Leadership podcast, Chandler Vannoy and Josh Hunter are joined by Dorena Williamson who is a proud mother, a passionate teacher, and a devoted bridge-builder. She is also the author of ColorFull, ThoughtFull, and GraceFull, which are children’s books that celebrate God’s diverse kingdom. During their conversation, they discuss what it means to be a bridge-builder, the necessity of listening and learning from others, and how to focus on pleasing God more than people. QUOTES FROM EPISODE 48: “Oftentimes, bridgebuilders get walked on because that is what bridges were designed for.” “The ultimate bridge builder was Jesus the Messiah. He gave his life to create a bridge for us to God.” “We must posture ourselves as listeners and learners.” “We need to do what we are called to do and that is not to please people, that is to aim to please God.” “Support and loyalty are not always the same thing.” “If someone is more loyal to me than they are to Christ, then I have failed them.” RESOURCES MENTIONED Designed to Lead by Eric Geiger and Kevin Peck Healing Racial Trauma: The Road to Resilience by Sheila Wise Rowe
In this weeks episode Amy and Mike talk with Dorena Williamson about her books Thoughtful, Gracefull and Colorful. Dorena Williamson is a bridge builder, speaker, writer, and worship leader who knows the power and beauty of racial awareness. She and her husband, Dr. Chris Williamson, planted Strong Tower Bible Church in Nashville, Tennessee, and have spent more than twenty years ministering to its richly diverse faith community. Dorena and Chris have four children. Why be colorblind when we can be colorFULL instead? Imani and Kayla are the best of friends who are learning to celebrate their different skin colors. As they look around them at the amazing colors in nature, they can see that their skin is another example of God's creativity! This joyful story takes a new approach to discussing race: instead of being colorblind, we can choose to celebrate each color God gave us and be colorFULL instead.
It’s not too early to mark your calendars: we’ll be back with another Advent season, beginning on November 29. I hope you’ll join me, as we wait together for God. In the meantime, everyone needs some rest from time to time, and so I’m going to be taking a little break. But I would love for you to hear from some of my friends while I’m resting! Starting this week, we’ll have special guest-hosted episodes of We Wonder every week, where you can still listen to God’s good words with some lovely and different voices. And I’ll be listening along with you! This week's episode features our friend, Dorena Williamson. Dorena is a bridge-builder, speaker, writer, and church-planter. Her books gently invite children and grownups alike to explore truths that are near and dear to my heart: that God has created all of us beautiful, across the range of human colors and cultures, as well as in all of our different abilities. I’m so grateful she is joining us today! And a large crowd followed him and pressed in on him. 25 Now there was a woman who had been suffering from hemorrhages for twelve years. 26 She had endured much under many physicians, and had spent all that she had; and she was no better, but rather grew worse. 27 She had heard about Jesus, and came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak, 28 for she said, “If I but touch his clothes, I will be made well.” 29 Immediately her hemorrhage stopped; and she felt in her body that she was healed of her disease. 30 Immediately aware that power had gone forth from him, Jesus turned about in the crowd and said, “Who touched my clothes?” 31 And his disciples said to him, “You see the crowd pressing in on you; how can you say, ‘Who touched me?’” 32 He looked all around to see who had done it. 33 But the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came in fear and trembling, fell down before him, and told him the whole truth. 34 He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace, and be healed of your disease.” We Wonder is written and hosted by Sarah Dahl, and is produced by Richard Clark and Nick Thompson. Many of us avoid and struggle with conversations about race because they make us feel uncomfortable. But as followers of Jesus we’ve been invited to step up and be a powerful witness to a world that needs to see our love and our oneness as a reflection of the power of the gospel. My guest today is a longtime racial bridge builder, speaker and author, Dorena Williamson, and she will help us get a biblical understanding of how to love and lead multicultural communities.
Many of us avoid and struggle with conversations about race or disabilities because it’s uncomfortable. When our children ask innocent questions about someone who is different than they are, it can make us feel tongue tied or embarrassed. Author Dorena Williamson has created some lovely children’s books to help parents respond and invite their children to join them on the journey of learning to love and speak worth over every person that God created. And I kept feeling frustrated thinking that’s not the solution to teach your children to be colorblind because that’s minimizing the beauty of God’s handiwork. And as Christians we should be the biggest proponents of celebrating the beauty of our racial diversity and not minimizing it or sort of washing it away and this colorblind land. She shares powerfully about how to engage with your children about racial and cultural differences and how we can model what it looks like to grow in the area of loving and accepting people who are different than us. As our children get older, I think that these are valuable conversations to have with them because the beauty of it is that it tells your children you are teachable and that you don’t get it right all the time and that you’re continuing to learn and grow. What we chat about: All about Dorena’s family and their multiracial church, Strong Tower Bible Church Her book ColorFull and the background behind why she wrote it The creativity of God and how he uses color in all that he created Looking for opportunities to share the beauty of racial differences with our children Language for parents to use to help teach children and avoid shaming Reinforcing the idea that “Different is not bad” and calling out the worth of people Why equipping kids early is important Modeling how we are all growing when it comes to loving and accepting people who are different than us Encouraging our children to ask questions even when they are uncomfortable Engaging with our kids about other cultures whether we can travel internationally or experience cultures in our own cities Connect with Dorena: Links Mentioned: ColorFull: Celebrating the Colors God Gave Us** ThoughtFull : Discovering the Unique Gifts in Each of Us** GraceFull : Growing a Heart that Cares for Our Neighbors** Other books/sites that Dorena recommends: Brownicity.com site with helpful resources (created by a Godly woman Dr. Lucretia Berry) The Beatitudes by Carole Boston Weatherford The Other Side by Jacqueline Woodson Beabridgebuilder.com A list of 28 picture books (aren’t about boycotts, buses or basketball) –listed created by ScottWood

Today I’m talking with Beth White, who is a historical fiction author, but not only that, Beth is a southern woman, a music teacher in a high school in the inner city of Mobile, Alabama with a heart to share the South’s complicated history, elevate often untold stories, and shine a light on much of what has not been popular in history books, and ultimately to remind readers that hope was real then and it still is now. We are living in a time that is full to the brim with feelings on fire, and today’s episode is yet another moment in the story of this podcast where the Lord made it clear to me: “this person, this story, this moment.” Beth’s most recent book, Reckless Love is the 3rd book in her Daughtry House trilogy that is the story of three sisters trying to put their lives back together during Reconstruction, which is the period following the Civil War. That period of time was also a time full of feelings on fire, and honestly, there are pages from these books, that carry conversations, even though they are fictional, that echo real conversations from that period of time, and from my current social media feeds. I have also learned lately, that MANY people in this country have very little knowledge about Black history in America beyond some key talking points. It’s so important, friends, that we dive deep, and I’m so grateful for authors like Beth who are willing to share history, even if it's woven around a fictional story. When we know the story of a person, how it laid a foundation for the present positively and negatively, it can help us develop empathy and understanding. And sometimes, using fictional characters, not unlike how Jesus used parables in the Bible, we can navigate hard and murky waters by walking through a characters’ shoes so we can then fix our eyes on our own hearts. Beloved, we are the body of Christ, and a part of the body is suffering. It is our call to tend to it, because when one part suffers, we all suffer. (1 Corinthians 12:24-26). You know that every week, I tell you that you and your story matter, because they do. In this moment, our beautiful Black brothers and sisters need to hear from us that they matter. Does it mean anyone else matters less? No, it absolutely does not. We all need each other, but it takes work to tend to one another, especially when a part has been neglected for far too long. Let’s consider the Apostle Paul’s call to do the work. And what does that look like? Ask the Lord. He is the Great Physician. Everything we do at This Grit and Grace Life is seeking to understand. It is our goal to humble ourselves and listen, to be able to view the world through others' eyes, all eyes. We wanted to hear a voice from the black community and have a conversation allowing us to learn and understand what we may not. We feel we are in a land of emotional minefields; we want to know why and even more than that as women of faith, learn what we can do to become instruments of racial reconciliation. We are speaking to Dr. Zoe Shaw, a black woman, who is also a psychologist. In this episode she is not here in her professional capacity, but as a woman telling a personal story, her life experience, that of her family and her community. We believe it will be one to gain an honest life view for all who listen. It was for us. Darlene and Julie Viewing in an app? Full show notes here! God Is Not Done Surprising You Pt. 2 - Dorena Williamson 12/15/2019 by Strong Tower Bible Church
Surprise friends! You’re getting an extra episode of the Simply Stories Podcast this week! There was so much happening in my conversation with Dorena, we had to split it into two. So whether you’re traveling for the holidays, still working, or preparing a meal, let’s pick up with Dorena and I talking about how history’s narrative is being broadened by hearing it being told from new perspectives, especially from the perspective of people of color. This quote from our conversation is going to stay with me for a LONG time: “If parents [during Jim Crow], would have the audacity to bring their children to see a fellow image bearer treated like this, why can we not read our children these stories? Why can we not subject ourselves to the discomfort of unpacking history so that we can do better because we can’t do better if we don’t learn from the past, and we can’t learn from the past if we don’t acknowledge all of it.” There is so much grace as we learn, friends. I’m so grateful that Dorena presented a seat at this table to me, and I hope you felt welcomed there too. Its true that we cannot fix or change history, but we most certainly can be attentive to how others experience it, what we uproot and sow into the present and how that affects future generations. They who have ears to hear, let them hear. Resources: Dorena’s books: Colorfull, Thoughtfull, Gracefull “Harriet” movie (find showings here!) The Central Park Five aka Central Park Jogger Case // documentary “When They See Us” /// commentary on film vs. reality New Yorker article (not Washington Post) “Who Speaks for Crazy Horse?” Charles and Susan Robinson : The Red Road Pocohontas (The person, not the movie. This article from the Smithsonian is FASCINATING about how the story we’ve also known may not actually be what happened. Additionally, I'd love to know what Native Americans think of the animated film... If anyone wants to enlighten me, I’d love to listen!) -Squanto -Sacagawea -Civil Rights Room at the Nashville Public Library downtown -Brown v. The Board of Education of Topeka Knoxville, TN’s super delayed desegregation of schools (Brown v. Board was in 1954, the ruling that officially STARTED desegregation in Knoxville was called Goss v. Board of Education, Knoxville took place in 1963. The story I told about my Mom seeing dummies in blackface hanging in the trees at her high school took place in 1965. This article details how the city was not fully “under compliance of the ruling” and “officially” desegregated until the early 1970’s. The article is an eye-opening read. -Our side bar about teaching children about their bodies, I can’t suggest this book enough: God Made All of Me: A Book that helps children protect their bodies -Dorena’s tweet about the little boy bullied for his skin being the color of “poop” -Internment camps for Japanese Americans -Tamera Alexander: Belmont Series, Belle Meade, Carnton -- fictional stories based on real people and real events during and after the war in Nashville, TN. (The two books I mention about Belle Meade are 1) this one with the attack on BMP and the Irish American immigrant 2) this one tells the story of a gal who attends Fisk University and joins the Jubilee Singers on their tour that saved the school --which is a true story-- that is FASCINATING.) -Freedmen Schools -Haven: The Dramatic Story of 1,000 WWII Refugees and How They Came to America by Ruth Gruber -Fort Ontario in Oswego, NY, the haven/camp for the refugees. I misquoted the number of refugees who came on the ship 984 made it. This article I just read called their process of being in America “their being given sanctuary on an old army base in Oswego, New York.” Which. Yes. But there were people who had relatives in America that wanted to take them home and they were. not. allowed. to. leave. Whether we like it or not, they were interred until the government could figure out what to do after being literal prisoners and victims of the Nazi party. I’m not saying it wasn’t complicated, but let’s not mince words. ::Off soap box:: This article is beautiful because it equally (towards the bottom) shares the accounts of people who were there who share how hard and painful it was, but also how many people of Oswego tried to care for them regardless of the literal fence in between them. Read the book, y’all. There’s a lot of freedom and joy in the story, but there’s a hot mess of not caring for people as hurting humans in there too. We can hold them both in the same hand, just like the rest of this conversation about history and how we approach the narrative. -Crazy Rich Asians: movie // book (which I JUST learned is a trilogy! Here’s a link to all three.) -Washington Post Article I read about using the song “Yellow” by Coldplay -“Black Panther” // the movie, and an article highlighting its power -Ann Voskamp and Lisa Sharon Harper -Enneagram 2 -The Great Migration -Reconstruction (The Act of 1867; some perspective from Time Magazine about what went wrong- I’m a history buff, I could do this all day long ;)) Thank you, B&H, for publishing these incredible books and for allowing me to read little bits from them on the podcast! Dorena also mentioned going to the library and finding resources, and my son and I stumbled upon this heart breaking book called Stolen Words about how Native Americans have lost their language during the white-washing of their identities in order to assimilate into white society. Today my conversation is with children’s book author, activist, and just generally amazing woman of God, Dorena Williamson. Dorena’s books, Colorfull, Thoughtfull, and Gracefull, take big things like skin color, living with special needs, and homelessness and breaks them down into verbiage that communicates to the heart of children the gift of God’s unique design of His Kingdom, practicing compassion, and sharing blessings with others. What’s even more beautiful about them though, is that they speak to the hearts of adults. These books have become staples in our home in helping equip our children, and ourselves, with more kind and compassionate words about our friends and neighbors who do not look or live like us. Dorena’s voice has played a significant role in a journey God has brought me on to see our world with fresh eyes, and let me just say that on the other side of this conversation with her, I am not the same, and I am grateful. Dorena created such a grace filled space for me to ask questions, learn and stretch what I’ve always known. There are so many incredible take-aways about how God calls us to deny ourselves, embrace discomfort, to pursue humility and never stop learning for the sake of unifying the body of Christ. We go so deep and so wide in this conversation, it actually will come to you in two parts! So pull up a chair, friend and join us for part 1.Let’s press in. Let’s be willing to do some possibly uncomfortable and humbling work. It is worthy work to ask God to open our eyes to see the people He made more clearly. “For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.” (Ephesians 2:10 NLT). Episode 092 - The "Hug", Forgiveness, and Racial Reconciliation, Part 2 Many people watched in AMAZEMENT as a brother, who's brother had been murdered by a police officer, offered forgiveness to the murderer - in front of cameras from around the world. You can watch it here. Social media went crazy. It was trending for days! Was it appropriate? Did the judge have to hug the convicted murderer? Did she cross the line? Why are blacks always offering forgiveness when injustice keeps happening? When will a significant change take place? Lots and lots of questions swirling. Last week we welcomed Mrs. Dorena Williamson who wrote a pretty provocative article challenging all of those questions and then some in a pretty forward-thinking and straight-forward writing. You can read the article here. You can listen to Episode 1 Here. On another platform Mrs WIlliamson muses, “Yes, God is a forgiving God. But we haven't really understood the depth of that grace if all our examples of forgiveness are times when the people being forgiven look just like us. Given the long history of white supremacy in this country, we as Christians should ask: Why aren't there videos of white people forgiving their black assailants trending on our social media? My guest for The Happy Hour #215 is Dorena Williamson. Dorena is a bridge builder and author of ColorFull, ThoughtFull and GraceFull, children's books that celebrate God's diverse kingdom. This series is inspired from twenty-three years as first lady of Nashville's Strong Tower Bible Church, a multiracial faith community Dorena and her husband Dr. Chris planted in 1995. Dorena and her husband have four wonderful children. Dorena and I start off the show talking about how a move to Nashville to further her husband Chris' rap career, ended up leading them to found a multi-racial church in a civil war rich town! Dorena shares how she had no idea that God would use all her years raising kids and leading worship to combine her passions and experiences into something bigger down the road. When we're itching to jump to the finish line because we want to know where God is leading us, Dorena encourages cultivating faithfulness, and describes how this can bring renewal of faith. Dorena and I then discuss the importance and value of having honest conversations about race, and recognizing the diversity of colors God created vs. being "colorblind". We also talk about how we as parents should be the first voices to talk about race with our kids, and the different ways we can make this happen. Friends, my hope is that through the show today you feel encouraged and empowered to have conversations about racial equality and bridge building. {Interview with Dorena Williamson} God designed our world to be full of color, diversity, and beautiful culture and it can be fun to teach our kids about his design from the earliest age. Today, children's book author Dorena Williamson will share about her book Colorfull and her passion to teach children about diversity and that all God's people are fearfully and wonderfully made. What we chat about: All about Dorena’s family and their multiracial church, Strong Tower Bible Church Her book ColorFull and the background behind why she wrote it The creativity of God and how he uses color in all that he created Looking for opportunities to share the beauty of racial differences with our children Language for parents to use to help teach children and avoid shaming Reinforcing the idea that “Different is not bad” and calling out the worth of people Why equipping kids early is important Modeling how we are all growing when it comes to loving and accepting people who are different than us Encouraging our children to ask questions even when they are uncomfortable Engaging with our kids about other cultures whether we can travel internationally or experience cultures in our own cities Other books/sites that Dorena recommends: Brownicity.com site with helpful resources (created by a Godly woman Dr. Lucretia Berry) The Beatitudes by Carole Boston Weatherford The Other Side by Jacqueline Woodson Beabridgebuilder.com A list of 28 picture books (aren’t about boycotts, buses or basketball) –listed created by ScottWood **Amazon affiliate link to help support the production of this podcast.
Our guest today loves Chik-Fil-A, understands life with a preemie, loves God and watching his plans unfold, knows what it is like to watch life unravel, and was called into building multi-cultural community in the church. Join us today for an incredible time with Dorena Williamson as we dig into the beauty of race and the importance of the conversations we have with our children.
