In this episode, I had the privilege of speaking with Chris Emdin, a transformative figure in education known for his innovative approaches that integrate hip-hop culture into learning. Here are the key points from our conversation:Personal Journey: Chris shared his experiences growing up in New York City and attending Brooklyn Tech, where he often felt pressured to adopt an identity that didn't reflect his true self. This sense of dehumanization fueled his passion for reshaping educational experiences for marginalized youth.Concept of "Ratchetness": We explored the idea of "ratchetness," which Chris defines as an authentic expression of identity that challenges societal norms. He argues that this concept allows individuals from marginalized backgrounds to reclaim their narratives and showcase their true selves unapologetically.Empowerment through Pedagogy: Chris emphasized that effective pedagogy is a powerful tool for transformation. He believes that teaching should not only impart knowledge but also empower students to embrace their full identities, fostering a sense of belonging and self-actualization in schools. The Role of Authenticity: The conversation highlighted the importance of authenticity in education. Chris argues that students should be encouraged to express their true selves, which can lead to greater engagement and passion for learning.Vision for the Future: Chris's work is driven by a commitment to creating educational spaces where all students feel valued and can thrive. He envisions schools as environments that nurture creativity and individuality, preparing students to inherit the earth with confidence. This episode is a deep dive into the intersection of culture and education, showcasing how embracing diverse identities can lead to a more equitable and inspiring learning environment.Learn how to join us in New Orleans for the Teaching Learning Coaching Conference this October by clicking here. We talk about everything from ratchetness and respectability, and how Black people reclaim spaces even under the threat of dispossession. Despite all of the reasons to have for defeat, we choose optimism, and hope you will, too.

Black On Both Sides Episode #116 This week in racism has a high school game announcer calling young ladies the n-word, Stacey Dash asking for forgiveness, Chauvin preparing for his day in court, and the royal family talking ill of little babies (correction unborn babies). Now, is anyone seriously shocked by this one? I mean isn’t this the same kingdom that has colonized the world for personal gain? They have subjugated brown people from one end of the world to the other. Let’s give them a little credit their obvious attempt at toning down their racism. Kunta wants you to know that the last statement was dripping with sarcasm. Kunta also feels like Cuomo is out of here. That isn’t sarcasm. He probably is out of here. Can we get his brother out of here too? I am just annoyed by him. Speaking of annoyed, Kunta is annoyed with Tessica. Her time in the spotlight is requiring too much. Like white teeth? 15 minutes does not require perfect straight teeth. When will she disappear back into obscurity? Who hasn’t cursed their kid out at some point in their young adult development? Let he who raises without sin cast the first f-bomb. Kirk Franklin is just a man. And he is Clark Kent to Plies’ Superman. Meanwhile in anti-racism, the Floyd family receives 27 million. At the very least this should force rule breakers to know that there are some repercussions for mistreating black suspects. Other than that, please spend your Stimulus check wisely. I have to start off this segment with a deep *sigh*. It;s out of my control people...there is nothing I can do about it. I feel powerless, I feel out of touch, because nothing I do or say seems to be helping to put an end to all this RATCHETNESS! Some of you have a different name for it, "GHETTO" "WILD" "HOOD RATS" "CRUNK" whatever the hell you call it when a female acts ridiculously silly and out of control. But its our own fault you see. First, we started by openly disrespecting our women by calling them everything but women. Then we left em all to raise out kids alone and a whole new generation grew up without a father around and made it worse. THEN we starting actually giving them PROPS for being RATCHET! We started giving them TV shows, we starting saying that they was just "some real ass bitches" (somehow that got translated into being a good thing?). Yes this was not the WHITE MAN that created RATCHETNESS..no..this was not a result of slavery or segregation. This is self inflicted, self made stupidity that we made up on our our own. You wont see me blaming white people or the government for ANY OF THIS BS AT ALL. How did it become this way ladies? Of course..THE NUMBER ONE ANSWER WILL INEVITABLY BE "CAUSE THESE MEN AINT SH** THATS WHY THEY ACT THAT WAY" To that I say a resounding "SHUT THE F*** UP" since the actions of someone else should NEVER be the reason that determines YOUR ACTIONS AS A PERSON. So here we are..what should we do with all this damn RATCHETNESS?
