You know Dasher and Dancer and Prancer and Vixen, but do you recall Rankin/Bass – the company behind some of America's most beloved stop-action holiday films? Our guest, Rick Goldschmidt, does. He's a historian of Rankin/Bass Productions – the creative team that created Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, The Year without a Christmas, and dozens upon dozens more. Preserving the legacy of those films and the actual props has been a lifelong passion for Rick and on this episode of PreserveCast, we'll head back to the 1960s to talk TV preservation and memory with an authority on the subject.
Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer. Frosty the Snowman. The Little Drummer Boy. All of these iconic holiday specials have something in common: they were written by Romeo Muller, the visionary mind behind nearly all the Rankin/Bass Christmas specials. We remember Muller's life and career with Rick Goldschmidt, official biographer for Rankin/Bass. Learn more about your ad-choices at https://www.iheartpodcastnetwork.com

The Rankin & Bass Story as told by official historian Rick Goldschmidt on this brand new Fake Show podcast with host Jim Tofte...enjoy and Merry Christmas!!!
It's a special show to ring in the goofy holidays, featuring our interview with official Rankin/Bass historian Rick Goldschmidt! You know Rankin/Bass. It's the legendary animation studio that produced all those classic holiday shows, starting with Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer in 1964. Lots more wonderful cartoons followed, including Santa Claus is Comin' To Town (which gave us Burgermeister Meisterburger), The Year Without a Santa Claus (which gave us the Heat Miser and Snow Miser), 'Twas the Night Before Christmas (that's the one with the mice and the clocks), and yes, Nestor the Long-Eared Christmas Donkey. Beyond the holiday specials, Rankin/Bass was also responsible for Mad Monster Party, The Hobbit, The Last Unicorn, ThunderCats, and so much more. Rick's first book, The Enchanted World of Rankin/Bass, is an invaluable resource for nerds like us, and his latest book celebrates the fiftieth anniversary of Frosty the Snowman. Here on the Flopcast, Rick discusses the amazing talents behind the scenes at Rankin/Bass, many of whom he knew and worked with, including: character designers (and Mad magazine artists) Jack Davis and Paul Coker, Jr.; voice actors Paul Soles (Hermey the elf!), Bradley Bolke (Jangle the elf!), and Larry Storch (come on, LARRY STORCH!); composer Maury Laws; writer Romeo Muller; and the guys who started it all, Arthur Rankin, Jr. and Jules Bass. Also discussed: Rick's experience as a guest this year at DragonCon, his picks for a couple of lesser-known Rankin/Bass projects we should all see, and his appearance on the TV show Collector's Call with Lisa Welchel! (That's right, Blair from The Facts of Life. You know we needed details.) Also this week: A holiday concert (and a new holiday EP) from Boston alt-rock legends Letters to Cleo, Speedy Ortiz, Grant's Advent Calendar, and Marisa Tomei. (Frosty would have a special message for Marisa: Happy Birthday.)
Richard is joined by his good friend Jonathan Williams who set up an interview with Rankin/Bass Historian Rick Goldschmidt. The guys talk all things Frosty, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, and Mad Monster Party to celebrate the spooky season. If you have ever wanted to know about Rankin Bass, Rick is the guy to listen to! It was five weird days with 85,000 weird humans... we have so much to cover from DragonCon that we're splitting it into two episodes! This week's review includes: The DragonCon Newbie Walking Tours; the ESO Network Meet and Greet; Doctor Who's David Tennant; legendary comic book artist George Pérez; Rankin/Bass animation expert Rick Goldschmidt; the Sci-Fi Explosion show (featuring Billy Ocean, believe it or not); the DragonCon parade; the cast of Gotham; unpopular opinions with MST3K's Bill Corbett; our Sci-Fi Legends memorial panel; a Batman-themed Roll-a-Panel; Kevin's other panels on Arrow, Titans, Gotham, the Planet of the Apes cartoon, and Cousin Oliver (!); the Mayor's panel on Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure; robot rock band Cybertronic Spree; late nights with Crusher, Picard, and Good Enough Cosplay; the DragonCon premiere of the documentary Troublemaker (starring our friend Dave); and yes, lots more. And that's just the first half! More DragonCon silliness next week, if we ever stop napping.

Gary (in for Pam) chats with author and historian Rick Goldschmidt about his fifth book, "The Making of Santa Claus is Coming to Town and The Daydreamer."
Hello and welcome to tenth episode of Fanboy Nation’s Toon-In-Talk, your rendezvous for animation interviews. At the mention of the name Rankin-Bass, it probably stirs up nostalgic Christmas memories of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Frosty the Snowman, A Year Without a Santa Claus, and other holiday specials using stop-motion puppetry. While Rankin-Bass might be best known for its Christmas specials, it was actually a major animation and film studio that produced many popular animated series and movies. The problem is that Rankin-Bass’ story is waiting to be told. Documentary maker John Brickley and Rankin-Bass historian Rich Goldschmidt have combined their forces to make The Enchanted World of Rankin-Bass documentary, chronicling the studio’s story from beginning to end.
Joe and Alex talk with ABC's Lana Zak about the last hurdles in front of the Republican tax bill. Rankin & Bass historian Rick Goldschmidt talks about how the beloved Christmas specials were made. In local news, Ferndale police search for two would-be car thieves.

Rick Goldschmidt is the official historian and biographer of Rankin/Bass Productions, the company that brought us holiday television favorites like Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town, Frosty the Snowman, and featured films such as The Last Unicorn, Mad Monster Party, and the animated version of The Hobbit. Rankin/Bass has also made many animated TV specials and series, including fan favorite, Thunder Cats. For almost 20 years, Rick has followed his passion for Rankin/Bass Productions, also realizing the rich history of their work and creatives were being lost in the shuffle of show ownership. Rick’s dedication allowed him to publish multiple books about Rankin/Bass, and has two websites dedicated to keep the Rankin/Bass Animagic alive. In this conversation with Christopher, Rick talks about how he made his work as a historian for Rankin/Bass into his career and passion, and thoughtfully shares his ‘why’ and some inside stories only Rick could know.
