It's Christmas Eve! Bob bless us everyone. We will let you pick into your stockings early and give you a holiday themed 6-Pack featuring hour long stop-motion TV specials by those seasonal legends Arthur Rankin & Jules Bass. Or just Rankin/Bass if you wanna get nasty under the mistletoe. These are the specials, a few based on some old hit Christmas songs, that generations came to know and love and added a mythology to the holiday season that still seems to resonate in pop culture. You know who we're talkin' about. Rudolph, Santa, Heimey, Topper, Aeon, Heat Miser, Mrs. Claus and the Great Ack. Everyone loves the Great Ack. These specials span over two decades. We found links to all the specials we discussed so we will pop a convenient link list for you below if you want to revisit any of them. Merry Christmas. We will return tomorrow for a Christmas episode you will be too busy to listen to. Show Notes This week we watched Liam Neeson pick up his mantle of action hero in 2008s Taken. It's surprisingly paced and full of short effective fights that make up a satisfying action movie. Maggie Grace is a believable, if too resilient teen, and Famke Jansen is a terrible co-parent, rounding out a typical American family facing a sex-trafficking threat. Good thing he's honed those skills. Recommendations: A Christmas Carol (the Muppets one on Disney + [and go the the special features to watch the full heartbreaking version] and the George C. Scott one on Paramount =); Rankin Bass Christmas specials which you should just by on physical media. It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas! And nothing says Christmas like classic TV holiday specials! Over the next two weeks, we'll be toasting and roasting two of the most famous from the duo of Rankin and Bass. Which of them belongs on the Nice List and which one deserves a shiny lump of coal in its stocking. This is Legends of Christmas! Airing sixty years ago this month, the first Rankin and Bass Christmas special asked if you recall the most famous reindeer of all. Based on the children's book by Robert L. May, originally published by Montgomery Ward, and made perhaps even more famous by the Gene Autry version of song written by May's brother-in-law Johnny Marks. The most famous version of all is the TV special produced by Arthur Rankin Jr. and Jules Bass, sponsored by GE, which aired on NBC and adapted the original story into an “Animagic” stop-motion saga featuring Rudolph, Hermey, Sam the Snowman, Yukon Cornelius, the Bumble, and more. An instant classic, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer kicked off a tradition of Rankin/Bass Christmas specials, including Frosy the Snowman, Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town, and The Year Without a Santa Claus. But does this one go down in history, or down in flames? For more geeky podcasts visit GonnaGeek.com You can find us on iTunes under ''Legends Podcast''. Spinning out of last week's review of The Year Without a Santa Claus, this week we're looking at another classic Rankin/Bass Christmas cartoon that debuted fifty years ago: 'Twas the Night Before Christmas! It's set in the bizarre little town of Junctionville, where humans and mice coexist in a way we can't quite figure out. There we meet a humble clockmaker, a nerdy mouse, a clueless wacky mayor, an egomaniacal vindictive Santa, and a selfish materialistic populace dreaming of a huge Christmas payday, if only their giant musical clock doesn't explode. It's magnificent. We also discuss the whole voice cast, including Jennifer Grey's father, Amanda Plummer's mother, one of the Bad News Bears, Franken Berry, Twinkie the Kid, and (according to Wikipedia) an "owl-faced, portly character actor." So knock back an egg nog or six, let up a little on the wonder why, and give this podcast a try. The Flopcast website! The ESO Network! The Flopcast on Facebook! The Flopcast on Instagram! Heat Miser and Snow Miser are back, baby! Originally introduced in the 1974 Rankin/Bass classic, The Year Without a Santa Claus, the boys are back in town and fighting with each other once again over seasonal superiority. But when a conspiracy surrounding the attempted murder of Santa enters the picture, can the brothers settle their differences and save Christmas? Come find out as we discuss this homage to Rankin/Bass Christmas specials, A Miser Brothers' Christmas!

Ho, ha, ho! To kick off the holiday season, we look back at a pair of those inimitable Rankin/Bass Christmas specials, rendered in beautiful stop-motion "animagic!" The specials in question: The Year Without a Santa Claus (of Heat Miser and Snow Miser fame), and The Life And Adventures of Santa Claus, frequently mentioned on these airwaves as "the weirdly pagan one," but maybe even weirder still.
A lesser-known Rankin/Bass Christmas classic, The Leprechaun's Christmas Gold (1981) showcases the sailor with no interpersonal skills, Dinty Doyle, and his adventure with the little leprechaun who harbors a grudge, Blarney Kilakalarney. Together, they face the infamous banshee, Mag the Hag! So grab a pint, sit back and relax, and enjoy a story within a story within a story within a story....
Let's wrap up our review of The Krofft Supershow, a super-silly Saturday morning TV show from mad geniuses Sid and Marty Krofft. The second season brought us two weird new segments: Magic Mongo (in which a goofy genie crashes a bikini beach party) and Bigfoot and Wildboy (in which a Sasquatch and a kid with no pants battle aliens and Peter Brady). The show was still hosted by wacky rock band Kaptain Kool and the Kongs, and we also review their appearances on American Bandstand, Donny and Marie, The Brady Bunch Variety Hour, and a Saturday Morning preview special with the Bay City Rollers. Of course our favorite Kaptain Kool and the Kongs member is Superchick, played by Debra Clinger, and we conclude our look at Debra's career beyond the Krofft world. Debra appeared on classic 70s/80s TV series like Barnaby Jones, The Hardy Boys, The Love Boat, and Hart to Hart. She starred in her own short-lived series The American Girls, alongside a future Three's Company star. She starred in the silly cult classic movie Midnight Madness, alongside a very young Michael J. Fox. And she even worked on a couple of our beloved Rankin/Bass Christmas specials. Also: 70s Hollywood power couple Lee and Farrah! Yogi Bear in space! Teen runaways and women in prison! The secret of the Dorse! A love connection on the set of Airwolf! Superchick meets the Snow Miser! Superchick meets Colonel Sanders! Krofft Supershow comic books! And the upcoming Super Megafest convention in Massachusetts, with some very special Krofft guests. So join us for more fun Krofft talk here on the Flopcast, where anything goes down, where most of what appears isn't true. The Flopcast website! The ESO Network! The Flopcast on Facebook! Christmas Eve is upon us as we ring out the old year with this final collection of holiday features to round out the season. We've dug deep for this final handful, boasting the longest collective runtimes thus far, including one which almost made its way to the theaters. It's perhaps also the weirdest batch of the bunch, featuring such oddities as sentient logs, Christmas leprechauns, and cross-contamination with L. Frank Baum's wonderful realm of Oz. Fear not, though, as we have not exhausted the genuine classics yet, as Frosty and Rudolph team up for the directing duo's grandest Christmas canon endeavor. The coals are still warm around The Twin Geeks Christmas Hearth, so make yourself comfortable as we wish you a Merry Christmas and a Hap-Hap-Happy New Year with the final installment of our Rankin/Bass Christmas quest.

The 1974 Rankin-Bass Christmas special the Year Without A Santa Claus is this week's seasonally appropriate...
The annual Christmas specials of veteran stop-motion legends Alan Rankin Jr. and Jules Bass have permeated our pop culture in an unforgettable fashion. The many iconic expansions they rendered, formatting old holiday songs into forty-minute television specials, has encapsulated for so many of us the very essence of the season itself. To decide once and for all which of these stand the test of time we're undertaking an entire retrospective evaluation of the Rankin/Bass Christmas filmography. Not just the iconic classics we grew up watching on television, but the more obscure productions too. For this first entry, we'll be covering the first five directorial specials of the duo, ranging from the annual favorite Santa Claus is Comin' to Town (1970) to the wildly bizarre and artistically baffling Cricket on the Hearth (1967). Join us as we warm ourselves around the fire and spin a yarn about these storied Christmas classics.
You better watch out, you better not cry--we're back with another episode in our Holiday Series! This week we are chatting about 3 Rankin & Bass classics: Frosty The Snowman, Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer, & Santa Claus Is Comin' To Town. Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer. Frosty the Snowman. The Little Drummer Boy. All of these iconic holiday specials have something in common: they were written by Romeo Muller, the visionary mind behind nearly all the Rankin/Bass Christmas specials. We remember Muller's life and career with Rick Goldschmidt, official biographer for Rankin/Bass. Learn more about your ad-choices at https://www.iheartpodcastnetwork.com

This week we are spending the last episode of 2020 looking at three stop motion Christmas TV movies, oh also we decided to mix it up with some drinks as we recorded so forgive us (more specifically Micah) for all the loud talking and rambling. The three TV movies are: Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer (1965) Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town (1970) The Year Without a Santa Claus (1974) Co-hosted by Ian Strong and Micah Ballou
“If you sit on my lap today, A new Nightcaps at the Theater Christmas special will come your way!” That’s right kids; it’s the most wonderful time of the year, Christmas! And what could stir up our beloved childhood memories more than re-watching our favorite Rankin-Bass stop motion, abominable monstrosities, with a few close friends, and copious amounts of liquor? Just don’t get so wasted you can’t put “one foot in front of the other.” Tonight, the podcast takes a look at THREE “seminal” (using that term loosely) Christmas Films. We go through the R & B Holiday canon with Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer (1964) Santa Claus Is Comin’ To Town (1970) & The Year Without A Santa Clause (1974). Even if you’re a Miser Brother we bet you won’t be able to resist singing along! Listen, Rate, Review, and Subscribe to us on Podbean, iTunes, Spotify, Stitcher, etc. instead. Merry Christmas, everyone. In this episode, Patricia and special guests Manic Expression members RowdyC, Some Jerk from Boston, Whyboy, and Nero Angelus discuss about the 19 Rankin-Bass Christmas specials and decide on which still have the charming Christmas spirit and which deserve to be placed on the naughty list.
Is Santa just a crude capitalist? Are the Kringles a cult? Could Rudolph have 'ok boomer'd his way out of working for Santa? Last week was Part 1 of our bizarre Rankin/Bass tournament, in which characters like Rudolph, Snow Miser, and Burgermeister Meisterburger competed in events like breakdancing and air hockey. The results were surprising, to say the least. This week, eight more Rankin/Bass characters are randomly drawn to do battle in equally ridiculous events. Will Santa Claus and Heat Miser have to play Hungry Hungry Hippos? Could Frosty the Snowman defeat Charlie in the Box in a yodeling competition? Friends, these are the important questions. In the end, last week's winner and this week's winner meet for a final confrontation that you will not believe, and we all learn the true meaning of the holidays. Which is to obsess over goofy old cartoons, apparently.
Friends of the Cupboard gather in the Advent Season. We talk about the Rankin Bass Christmas specials, particularly the weirdest ones. We consider together how consternation about how people might be getting Christmas wrong turns Christmas into its opposite. Christ came as "Good news of great joy for all people." Christmas might be a mess, but it is a mess that God counted worth redeeming. Hosts Todd, Keith, Ken, Allison, Producer Rick, Special Guests: Showrunner Amanda, Tech and Game Support Gavin. Merry Christmas to all!
Kevin and Kornflake are taking their obsession with classic Rankin/Bass Christmas cartoons to a ridiculous new level, tournament-style. We're randomly fishing names of Rankin Bass characters out of reindeer-shaped coffee mugs, and determining who would win in various silly events. Who would make a better Lyft driver, Santa or Frosty? What if Heat Miser and Charlie-in-the-Box were in a rap battle? Stuff like that. And believe it or not, things get a little weird. The competition is fierce and festive, and this week's winner advances to the final round next week. And in true clickbait fashion, this week's winner will shock you. Enjoy the show... or we're sending Hermey for your teeth.

Merry Christmas! Happy Hanukka! Happy Kwanzaa! Happy Solstice! Fearsome Festivus! It’s the holidays, and Hip Squared is celebrating with our very first Christmas special (sorry other holidays, maybe next year). Kelly Shiflet comes back to talk about the He-Man & She-Ra Christmas Special from 1985 (available for free on Youtube). This is the tale of Orko, one of He-Man’s sidekicks, who accidentally travels to Earth to learn about Christmas. She-Ra helps him return with the children he meets, and then she joins He-Man and their friends in a battle against Skeletor and Horde Prime to save Christmas and Eternia. Kelly also talks about the Rankin Bass Christmas specials of the 1960s and 70s including Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer. Then John talks about The Kinks’ “Father Christmas”, a rock song from 1978 about a department store Santa who is mugged by a group of kids. They tell him to give him his money, and to save his toys “for all the little rich boys”. This song attacks the season’s over-consumption, but also contains a message of compassion and generosity for the poor. Then John talks about Santa Claus: the Movie, a 1985 film starring Dudley Moore and John Lithgow. It’s about an elf who leaves the North Pole and meets an evil toy-maker (played by Moore and Lithgow respectively). The toy-maker wants to use Christmas magic for evil, and plans his own Christmas 2. Can Santa and his friends save Christmas? Of course they can. Finally, Troy talks to us about the Great British Bake-Off (or Baking show as it’s known in America). He talks about the humor and gentleness of the show. Then he describes the newest Christmas specials, including the current season of the Great American Baking Show and Great British Bake-Off holiday specials starring some of its former contestants. Listen for some splendid flavors. This episode has no soggy bottom! Maplex Monk is on the boards. Thanks for listening to Hip Squared! Please share this episode with a friend (or enemy), like us on Facebook, share us on social media and become a member on Patreon for as little as $1 a month.

On the December 28, 2017 episode of /Film Daily, Peter Sciretta is joined by /Film managing editor Jacob Hall, senior writer Ben Pearson, weekend editor Brad Oman and writers Hoai-Tran Bui and Chris Evangelista to talk about what they did over the Holidays and share their favorite Christmas gifts. You can subscribe to /Film Daily on iTunes, Google Play, Overcast and all the popular podcast apps (here is the RSS URL if you need it). Feedback: Hayden writes in that “Yes Die Hard is a Christmas movie. If you break the plot down, it's the typical Christmas story. A distant father who has to go on an adventure to rekindle his relationship with his family. Think about all the Christmas movies that have this exact plot device. Also it's important that it's on Christmas Eve because police activity would be down. If It's A Wonderful Life counts, which it should, then Die Hard should. A very massive chunk of the film doesn't even take place on Christmas.“ Leanne R. from LA writes in that “Rankin-Bass Christmas specials would have been a good addition to your lists, especially when you consider A Charlie Brown Christmas and Mickey's Christmas Carol were mentioned in the episode (both technically films, but are popularized as tv specials). And I wasn't sure if I missed this or not, but The Santa Clause is a quintessential Christmas movie for me. I also wanted to give a shout out to Nora Ephron's Sleepless in Seattle & You've Got Mail as well, which are not technically Christmas films but strike the proper feel-good Christmas tone to pass. You've Got Mail, especially, feels more Christmas-y (based on The Shop Around the Corner, it feels more deserved of a Christmas film title) and for a rom-com fan like me is also a yearly Christmas film staple. Otherwise, very much enjoyed your lists! Thanks for the update and keep up the good work.” Have any geeky thoughts on this news that we might not have addressed on the podcast? Send your opinions, speculation, analysis and suggestions to peter@slashfilm.com. What we've been doing over the Holidays: Jacob finished Ultimate Beastmaster and American Vandal, finally got around to The Shape of Water, played more Wolfenstein 2, played The Thing: Infection at Outpost 31 and Pitchcard. Peter binge-watched two whole seasons of Survivor, watched the Star Wars episode of The Toys That Made Us on Netflix, and played The Thing: Infection at Outpost 31 board game. HT watched Ultimate Beastmaster, A Christmas Prince, A Christmas Inheritance, gave in and listened to the Hamilton soundtrack even though she was trying to save it until she saw the show. Chris saw THE LAST JEDI again on Christmas Day (it's still good). I've also been reading and making an effort to not look at my phone, which is just bliss. Ben watched The Last Jedi (again), It's a Wonderful Life, Logan Lucky, Mudbound, A Ghost Story, and The Good Place Brad saw The Disaster Artist and Molly's Game, is continuing to catch up on awards season movies like The Post, The Florida Project, and I, Tonya, and is finally spending time playing Star Wars Battlefront 2. Favorite gifts we got for Christmas: Peter got a Hot Toys life-size Baby Groot replica and Google Wifi router HT got KOREAN SKIN CARE, also the Costco MoviePass/Fandor year-long subscription Chris iphone X Ben got a bunch of board games Jacob got lots of new PC stuff Brad got the Ectomobile Owner's Manual Book and his life back. It's the most wonderful time of the year, when our TV sets are filled with the warm glow of classic holiday specials, specifically from Arthur Rankin, Jr. and Jules Bass, who blended animation techniques with original music and celebrity narrators to create magic. But which of their specials is the best? Don't worry: we got this. See Mark and Hal LIVE in San Francisco on Sunday, January 14th with guests Cameron Esposito and Rhea Butcher! Get tickets here.
Sean and Dave are joined by our friend Joe Gallo to close out this year with the Rankin/Bass Christmas special, "Jack Frost." Who's that nipping at your nose? Is it 40 minutes of exposition and introductions to characters that are immediately tossed away? Or is it the criminally bad songs in this show that really got the three of us ready for the holidays? You decide! (Hint: D) all of the above.) "Jack Frost" is an innocent glimpse into what happens when you allow an immortal sprite to become human and then give him a series of unobtainable tasks. This is our last episode for the year! Have a happy holiday and safe New Year from everyone at SMC! See you in 2016!
This week, in a very special post-holiday Flopcast: We celebrate Appreciate a Dragon Day (and have a correction about the Tic Tac Dough dragon); Kornflake and Doornail's Christmas trip to Florida is all too similar to the Rifftrax classic "Santa Claus and the Ice Cream Bunny"; Kevin knows where the Pointer Sisters go for coffee (aren't you impressed?); Christmas dinner at the Red Arrow Diner is weird and bacon-filled; the final Rankin Bass Christmas cartoon (2001's Santa Baby) features a chicken and a lobster (it's a Flopcast miracle); and thanks to Moon Hooch, Kornflake rings in the new year with topless saxophone players. This is a super-quick episode, but you can hear even more of your Flopcast hosts this week on Earth Station One! Episode 248 is ESO's 2014 geek year in review show... and Kornflake is in the Geek Seat.

We're celebrating the holidays in Chickentown by drinking coffee and making podcasts! (It's pretty festive around here all year, actually.) Kevin reports on recent shows by Garfunkel and Oates (but not DJ Jazzy Jeff), and Aimee Mann (whose Christmas show guests included Jonathan Coulton and an actual Bangle); Kornflake reports on weird holiday lawn decorations (yes, turkeys are involved) and her own upcoming holiday concert plans (yes, saxophones are involved); in a holiday-themed edition of "Chickens in the News," we learn about the Big Chicken Chorus (and why we have to go to Georgia RIGHT NOW); and we're watching all the Rankin Bass Christmas specials in order this year (yes, even Nestor). Also, if there's time, we're going to turn into otters and start a jug band.
Welcome back to the Neverland Podcast! Today we'll share some Christmas memories from some friends of the show. We'll also hear another fun song from the Rankin/Bass Christmas special, "Santa Claus is Coming to Town." Come along with me and enjoy childhood memories!
