It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas! And nothing says Christmas like classic TV holiday specials! Over the next two weeks, we'll be toasting and roasting two of the most famous from the duo of Rankin and Bass. Which of them belongs on the Nice List and which one deserves a shiny lump of coal in its stocking. This is Legends of Christmas! Airing fifty years ago this month, based on the book by Phyllis McGinley, this Rankin and Bass special deals with every child's worst nightmare: Christmas has been canceled! After centuries of delivering presents to every child on Earth, Santa Claus is suffering from exhaustion and decides to take the year off. That means it's up to Mrs. Claus to figure out a way to save Christmas, with the help of some elves. We also meet the Miser Brothers, Heat Miser and Snow Miser, who cause trouble for Mrs. Claus as she seeks to wake Santa from his stupor. Featuring the voices of Mickey Rooney, Dick Shawn and George S. Irving, the special received a live-action remake in 2006 and an animated sequel, A Miser Brothers' Christmas, in 2008. But is The Year Without a Santa Claus better left forgotten, or will it make our list (and check it twice) of holiday classics?   Include a voicemail for our Year-End Special here: https://forms.gle/EZyMNM8mpiu5sRPDA    For more geeky podcasts visit GonnaGeek.com   You can find us on iTunes under ''Legends Podcast''. What's up, dudes? I've got Anthony Caruso from ‘Tis the Podcast and Jeff Loftin from Lost Christmas with me to talk the greatness that is “The Year Without a Santa Claus” from Rankin Bass! Released in ‘74, it aired all throughout the ‘80s!When Santa Claus wakes up with a mysterious magical illness that affects immortal beings, he decides to summon the elf doctor. This quack immediately tells Santa that kids don't care about him, causing him to skip Christmas. Mrs. Claus sends elves Jingle and Jangle to Southtown, USA to gauge the local children's belief in Santa. Unfortunately for them, a dog catcher nabs the reindeer Vixen who accompanied them. They approach the mayor to release Vixen, but he will only acquiesce if they can make it snow. Thus they take Mrs Claus with them to see the Miser Brothers who rule over the heat and cold.Meanwhile, Santa goes to rescue Vixen and discovers kids still believe in him. He returns to the North Pole while Mrs. C and the elves visit Heat Miser and Snow Miser. When they refuse to cooperate, the trio ask another Nature to intervene. The snow in Southtown prompts the mayor to declare a holiday for Santa, and the children of the world write to him and send him presents. Moved by their love and generosity, Santa makes his Christmas Eve ride.Reindeer with socks covering her ears? Yep. Children from the It's a Small World ride? For sure. Personifications of summer and winter? Only if they're petty sibling rivals! So put on your Santa suit, hop on your reindeer, and fly to negotiate with minor deities with this episode all about “The Year Without a Santa Claus!”‘Tis the PodcastFB: @tisthepodcastTwitter: @tisthepodIG: @tisthepodcast Lost Christmas PodcastFB: @LostChristmasPodcastTwitter: @LostChristmasP1IG: @lostchristmaspodcast Give us a buzz! Let's wrap up our review of The Krofft Supershow, a super-silly Saturday morning TV show from mad geniuses Sid and Marty Krofft. The second season brought us two weird new segments: Magic Mongo (in which a goofy genie crashes a bikini beach party) and Bigfoot and Wildboy (in which a Sasquatch and a kid with no pants battle aliens and Peter Brady). The show was still hosted by wacky rock band Kaptain Kool and the Kongs, and we also review their appearances on American Bandstand, Donny and Marie, The Brady Bunch Variety Hour, and a Saturday Morning preview special with the Bay City Rollers. Of course our favorite Kaptain Kool and the Kongs member is Superchick, played by Debra Clinger, and we conclude our look at Debra's career beyond the Krofft world. Debra appeared on classic 70s/80s TV series like Barnaby Jones, The Hardy Boys, The Love Boat, and Hart to Hart. She starred in her own short-lived series The American Girls, alongside a future Three's Company star. She starred in the silly cult classic movie Midnight Madness, alongside a very young Michael J. Fox. And she even worked on a couple of our beloved Rankin/Bass Christmas specials. Also: 70s Hollywood power couple Lee and Farrah! Yogi Bear in space! Teen runaways and women in prison! The secret of the Dorse! A love connection on the set of Airwolf! Superchick meets the Snow Miser! Superchick meets Colonel Sanders! Krofft Supershow comic books! And the upcoming Super Megafest convention in Massachusetts, with some very special Krofft guests. So join us for more fun Krofft talk here on the Flopcast, where anything goes down, where most of what appears isn't true. The Flopcast website! The ESO Network! The Flopcast on Facebook! Picture a Christmas where jingle bells don't ring and Santa's sleigh remains parked in the North Pole. That's the curious premise of the 1974 classic, "The Year Without a Santa Claus," which my brother Tyler and I explore in our latest podcast episode. Join us as we stroll down memory lane, revisiting the whimsical world of Rankin/Bass animations where Mrs. Claus takes center stage and the Miser Brothers' sibling rivalry heats up the holidays. We'll share how voice actors from yesteryears lent their unique flair to these enduring characters, and you'll discover the surprising ways these festive figures have mirrored their real-life counterparts. As the sleigh bells continue to echo, we unwrap the tale of Iggy's quest and the heart-tugging tune "I Believe in Santa Claus" that reminds us of the magic nested in belief. We also chuckle over the less-than-sanitary barbershop antics and marvel at how a cameo by Charlie Chaplin sneaks into this holiday tapestry. The Miser Brothers steal the show with their iconic songs, adding a dash of mischief to the Christmas cheer. And if you ever wondered how Batman ties into all this, we've got a story that'll sprinkle a little extra joy into your listening experience. Our festive journey culminates with musings on how a single heartfelt letter can rekindle the Christmas spirit across the globe. We chat about how the Rankin/Bass specials have shaped our own holiday traditions and speculate on the mysteries of Santa's many on-screen personas. So, pour yourself a mug of hot cocoa and cozy up for a holiday podcast episode that's more stuffed with joy and nostalgia than a Christmas stocking. Tyler and I can't wait to share our family's holiday favorites and the timeless impact of "The Year Without a Santa Claus" on us all.Own the Rankin/Bass classics now! A lovely, amazing woman came to me in a marriage she feared was over. Her husband was sleeping in his office and she struggled with the question of whether their union was worth saving. She felt unseen and undervalued and it seemed that her husband was warm and welcoming to everyone but her. Through our work together she had a massive shift. She realized that what she was experiencing from her husband was a reflection of how she was treating herself, and her husband was distancing himself from her because he felt helpless in the face of the needs she was presenting. Now her life is strikingly different. Through nurturing, healing work on her deep seated fears and wounds, she built up the strength to take bold new actions in the marriage. She learned how to fulfill her own needs and then become more curious about the needs of others. She exercised outrageous love for herself and found greater love for her husband and family. Her husband sensed the shift and was happy to start rooming with her again

Rich Chambers - Songwriter/Producer/Musician/Singer Does anyone still use the term "rock n' roll" anymore? Rich Chambers certainly does. In fact, he specializes in it, bringing us all the fun, excitement, and energy from the early days of rock n' roll in a uniquely fresh way built specifically for the 2020s.  Starting with the 2019 release of his Christmas album, “Santa's Rockin' Band,” Rich has been on a roll. His Christmas album produced one single, “the Snow Miser vs. Heat Miser,” which has been streamed more than one million times on Spotify to date. Following this has been six single releases beginning in January 2021, including his film festival award-winning video for his rock original, "I'm So Tired,” which has received accolades in over 50 film festivals across the globe for its hard-hitting social commentary. His most recent release is his guitar-driven version of the Beatles, “I Saw Her Standing There,” which debuted in March 2022 to high critical acclaim.  Rich's music videos have received a combined total of well over 500,000 views, and his Spotify streaming is clocking in at approximately 25,000 listeners a month and growing. With more single and album releases planned for 2022, Chambers is making his mark as a rock n' roll artist to watch for. As one music journalist recently said in the FLEX music blog about Chambers, who hails from Langley, British Columbia: "One of Canada's best-kept secrets, Rich Chambers could easily become a household name in a matter of months!" Marlana   What makes your story a bit unique is that you're actually circling back around to a passion that you couldn't let go of. So, talk to us a little bit about that. Rich Correct. I mean, I'm a middle-aged rocker. And it's like most musicians, I've been doing this since I was a little kid, I picked up the guitar at 10 and started writing songs of fourteen. And that's where I got absolutely hooked, songwriting was what did it for me. If it weren't for songwriting, I would just be a hobbyist guitar player and singer, but you put songwriting in the mix, and I went nuts with it. And that's been one of my huge passions is but like many, you know, life journeys, things happen. And when I got out of high school, I was going to be the next rock star. A few cheesy days later, and about a year into that I realize, oh, this is going nowhere. I didn't want the smartest things I could have ever done when I went back to school. And then I pursued went further on as a kid very barely passed high school, I finished a bachelor's degree, a master's degree in it for a while was actually toying with PhD work. Whether it's Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, Muppet Family Christmas, or any other number of annual holiday classics, everyone has their favorite Christmas special. Tony and Matt look to see if they can replicate that warm, fuzzy holiday feeling, and add something new to their annual viewing by catching up on some vintage TV holiday specials. First up, Matt introduces Tony to The Judy Garland Christmas Show from 1963. Judy and her children invite friends and family into their studio "home" to sing a mix of broadway numbers and holiday classics. Next up, Tony finally catches up on The Year Without a Santa Claus. Maybe not as fondly rembered as some Rankin-Bass classics, though a favorite of Matt's family during his youth, this 1974 stop-motion special finds Santa Claus coming down with a bad case of the flu and looking to take the year off from his Santa duties. Mostly known for the characters Heat Miser and Snow Miser, will their brief appearances be enough to convert Tony? Last, but certainly not least, Tony and Matt watch the TV special that features the now famous Little Drummer Boy/Peace on Earth duet sung by Bing Crosby and David Bowie, Bing Crosby's Merry Olde Christmas. They discuss the connections between this special and the Judy Garland one, surreal musical digressions featuring Twiggy, the strangeness of the Thin White Duke's appearance during perhaps his weirdest musical phase, and the lasting appeal of this particular Christmas special format.

War! What is it good for? That's something the elves have to find out for themselves this week as Anthony, Thom, and Julia head into battle and discuss the 2016 horror film, Better Watch Out. Not since the debate over Jim Carrey's How the Grinch Stole Christmas has Anthony been forced to suffer such a brutal attack, as Thom and Julia double-team him and do their best to squash out that spark of enjoyment he receives from a movie that he actually liked. It's not all a fight though - in fact, there are hilarious laughs a plenty in this episode, which sees Thom and Anthony becoming oddly reminiscent of Dwight and Andy when they first met on The Office (or, if y'all prefer a Christmas reference, Anthony and Thom revert back to their Snow Miser and Heat Miser roles, while Julia tries to placate them as Mother Nature). In addition to the film, this week sees Thom give advice to our listeners about working remote; the hosts discuss which wild animals they would like to own as pets; binge-worthy television is talked about; and a game involving Christmas movie "teams", which was brought to the show's attention by listener GaryBlauman, is played. Also - dueling banjos! A line has been drawn in the snow - so choose your side, settle in, and enjoy this amusing episode!

The results were surprising, to say the least. This week, eight more Rankin/Bass characters are randomly drawn to do battle in equally ridiculous events. Will Santa Claus and Heat Miser have to play Hungry Hungry Hippos? Could Frosty the Snowman defeat Charlie in the Box in a yodeling competition? Friends, these are the important questions. In the end, last week's winner and this week's winner meet for a final confrontation that you will not believe, and we all learn the true meaning of the holidays. Which is to obsess over goofy old cartoons, apparently.

It's a special show to ring in the goofy holidays, featuring our interview with official Rankin/Bass historian Rick Goldschmidt! You know Rankin/Bass. It's the legendary animation studio that produced all those classic holiday shows, starting with Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer in 1964. Lots more wonderful cartoons followed, including Santa Claus is Comin' To Town (which gave us Burgermeister Meisterburger), The Year Without a Santa Claus (which gave us the Heat Miser and Snow Miser), 'Twas the Night Before Christmas (that's the one with the mice and the clocks), and yes, Nestor the Long-Eared Christmas Donkey. Beyond the holiday specials, Rankin/Bass was also responsible for Mad Monster Party, The Hobbit, The Last Unicorn, ThunderCats, and so much more. Rick's first book, The Enchanted World of Rankin/Bass, is an invaluable resource for nerds like us, and his latest book celebrates the fiftieth anniversary of Frosty the Snowman. Here on the Flopcast, Rick discusses the amazing talents behind the scenes at Rankin/Bass, many of whom he knew and worked with, including: character designers (and Mad magazine artists) Jack Davis and Paul Coker, Jr.; voice actors Paul Soles (Hermey the elf!), Bradley Bolke (Jangle the elf!), and Larry Storch (come on, LARRY STORCH!); composer Maury Laws; writer Romeo Muller; and the guys who started it all, Arthur Rankin, Jr. and Jules Bass. Also discussed: Rick's experience as a guest this year at DragonCon, his picks for a couple of lesser-known Rankin/Bass projects we should all see, and his appearance on the TV show Collector's Call with Lisa Welchel! (That's right, Blair from The Facts of Life. You know we needed details.) Also this week: A holiday concert (and a new holiday EP) from Boston alt-rock legends Letters to Cleo, Speedy Ortiz, Grant's Advent Calendar, and Marisa Tomei. (Frosty would have a special message for Marisa: Happy Birthday.)

As you may suspect, we're dangerously obsessed with the classic animated holiday specials produced by Rankin/Bass. Starting with Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer in 1964, Rankin/Bass cranked out one amazing cartoon after another right through the mid-80s. This week the Mayor of Chickentown joins Kevin and Kornflake for a very festive Top 4 1/2 List of our favorite Rankin/Bass holiday shows. We discuss Rudolph and Frosty, Santa and Mrs. Claus, the Heat Miser and Snow Miser, Yukon Cornelius and Hermey, and all their weird little pals. Hey, are these wholesome heartwarming shows for the whole family? Or, if you spend a few decades over-analyzing them (as perhaps we have) do any dark and disturbing themes emerge? Happily, the answer to both questions is an enthusiastic yes, and we all win.
