She started from the bottom, now she here! That's quite the upgrade, how'd she pull it off? Listen in to find out! Image credits: Latin oil painting of Hurrem Sultan titled Rosa Solymanni Vxor (Rosa, Süleyman's Wife) (Roxelana), c. 1500-1558. This week, we travel to the court of the tenth Ottoman Emperor - though this tale is only tangentially about Suleiman the Magnificent. It's a bit of an old cliche to say behind every great man is a great woman - but it is fair to say Suleiman was married to a remarkable Ukrainian lady, who left a lasting impact on their empire. What do we know about Roxelana/Hurrem Sultan/Aleksandra? Far too little, but here's what little I can tell you… Sources this week include: Empress of the East by Leslie Pierce. Who do you imagine when you think of people with great power and influence? It's probably not the wife of Ottoman sultan, Süleyman the Magnificent, who was kidnapped from her home in Eastern Europe and taken to Istanbul as a child. Yet, this woman became one of the most powerful and influential women in Ottoman history. Her name was Roxelana and she left her mark on history during the sixteenth century through her involvement with state affairs and charities. Let's travel to modern-day Turkey and learn about this powerful, and often controversial, woman of influence. The Ottoman Empire is known, among other things, for its imperial harem. But a female slave from Ukraine turned the whole system of concubines on its head and ushered in an age of female domination. This was the famous and infamous Roxelana (aka Hurrem Sultan). One of the last of these great women was another Ukrainian - Turhan Sultan (or Nadiya). Another might have been Ukrainian - but I'm not 100% sure of her. In this episode, we explore their origins, how they got to Istanbul and how they goverened their respective courts. Throughout the history of the Ottoman Empire many influential women have lobbied for power and influence over the sultans but few did it better than Hurrem Sultan. Originally born somewhere in Poland and captured into slavery Hurrem worked her way up to becoming the beloved wife of the empire's most powerful Sultan. In the year we've spent trying to explain what makes Tuscany so special, we haven't talked as much as we should have about the fairer half of the world, the extraordinarily complex people that make our lives worth living. Tuscan women, as far as we're concerned, are really one of a kind. You would have to travel far and wide in order to find people so able to effortlessly combine so many diverse and confounding traits. Don't be fooled by their gentle manners or good nature: they're as dangerous as they come. Need some proof to this extraordinary claim? Happy to oblige. What about the 16 year old girl from Maremma that was kidnapped by pirates, sold as a slave in Constantinople and was still able to buy back her freedom and convince the most eligible bachelor on the planet to marry her? How's that for a comeback story? Follow us as we tell you the amazing tale of Margherita Marsili, the noblewoman from Siena who went from just a girl in the harem to the only wife of Suleyman the Magnificent, the most powerful emperor in Ottoman history. Her incredible story of resilience and courage is only made even more special by the fact that not many experts, outside of Tuscany, seem to recognise that she was indeed born around here. The story, the legend and the proof of her Tuscan heritage in this week's episode of our podcast, available pretty much everywhere. Let us know what you think about this kind of content, if you like it or if you'd prefer we spend more time talking about art, culture, hidden corners of our region or travel tips. Hürrem Sultan, aka Haseki Sultan, aka Roxelana, was born around 1502 and was captured and sold into slavery as a young girl. This time, we talk about Suleyman the Magnificent, Ottoman contemporary of Henry VIII. He also had a unique approach to marriage, actually getting married! He and his wife Roxelana set a new precedent for Ottoman Sultans and concubines, one that was never repeated but blazed a trail for powerful women to follow and started a new approach to succession.

Under Suleiman the Magnificent, who ruled from 1522 to 1566, the Ottoman Empire reached its apex, conquering Belgrade and most of Hungary until finally being stopped at the gates of Vienna. The Ottoman fleets dominated the Mediterranean and reached as far the Indian Ocean. The empire also went through a golden age of culture and literature under Suleiman's competent watch. He went against tradition and married a Christian woman from his harem, made famous in the west as Roxelana and said to have had red hair. At the time of his death the Ottoman Empire dominated much of the Middle East and the North African coastline and had made Moldavia, Crimea, Transylvania and Wallachia into vassals of the Empire. Empress of the East by Leslie Pierce is the biography of Roxelana, a captive slave who became the wife of Sultan Suleyman the Magnificent. This profoundly insightful look at one of the most mysterious figures of the sixteenth century weaves a fascinating story of a slave captured in what is modern-day Ukraine. At the time, Ukraine was known as Ruthenia. She was sold to the Ottoman harem, but later became the wife of Sultan Suleyman the Magnificent. She ruled with her husband and had a lasting impact on the country known as Turkey today. The subtitle of the book sums up Roxelana’s importance, “How a European Slave Girl Became Queen of the Ottoman Empire.” This is a very well researched biography of a mysterious historical figure who impacted the Ottoman Empire and ruled with her husband at a time when women were not considered worthy to be leaders. Her rise from slave to concubine to royal wife is staggering in its speed, audacity and importance. Roxelana’s story has recently been revived in the Turkish historical television series Muhteșem Yüzyil [Magnificent Century] which was originally broadcast from 2011 to 2014. It has since been seen by more than 150 million viewers in dozens of languages worldwide. For the full transcript, click here. Buy the book (and support Nash Holos at no extra cost) by clicking here. We explore her relationship to other women at the Ottoman court, the politics of her motherhood and philanthropy, and her role in Ottoman diplomacy. In the end, Roxelana's work, her relationship with Suleiman, and the unusual nuclear family they created despite the otherwise polygynous patterns of reproduction at the Ottoman court would transform the rules of Ottoman succession, the role of Ottoman royal women, and the future of the Empire as a whole.
