This episode features a paper given by Katie Holmes at the IHR on women's running. Until October 1975, women in the UK did not compete in marathons, nor were they allowed run in any other long-distance road races. Women's Amateur Athletic Association rules prohibited them from racing further than 6000m. Road racing was an almost entirely male preserve. In May 1964, Scottish runner Dale Greig competed in the Isle of Wight Marathon, a lone woman in a field of 67 men, with the permission of the race organisers. Her run was covered by the national press but did not act as a catalyst for change. By the early 1970s, more women were challenging the athletics governing bodies' rules and seeking to take their place on the start line at road races. These women saw themselves as long-distance runners and through their activism they asserted that identity for themselves and asserted the right of all women to run. In this paper, I will give examples of the varied ways in which women broke the rules. I will consider the wider meaning and impact of their activism in the context of changes in women's sport and the women's liberation movement in the 1970s. My paper draws on oral history interviews, contemporary coverage of the issue in Athletics Weekly and the press and archival research. Katie Holmes is a runner and independent sports historian from Nottingham. Her research into the history of women's distance running in the UK is driven by a desire to capture stories which might otherwise be lost and to recover, and uncover, stories which have faded out of the collective memory due to the marginalisation of women in sport. Tomás Mac Conmara who is set to present tomorrow's annual lecture of the Oral History Network of Ireland. Dr . Tomás discussed his honour with being invited to deliver tomorrow's lecture which will take place in Dublin. He spoke about his interest in the War of Independence and the Civil War while referring to his teenage years where he recorded memories of the Irish Revolutionary period. The Lecture is set to take place at the Royal Society of Antiquaries of Ireland in Dublin between 7 and 9 pm on Thursday 1st December. Throughout the history of the Ottoman Empire many influential women have lobbied for power and influence over the sultans but few did it better than Hurrem Sultan. Originally born somewhere in Poland and captured into slavery Hurrem worked her way up to becoming the beloved wife of the empire's most powerful Sultan. Bea Feitler was a graphic designer, art director, educator, and a mentor to young professionals. Originally from Brazil, Feitler eventually found her home in New York City and made a name for herself in the magazine industry. Early on in her career she was named co-art director of Harper's Bazaar along with Ruth Ansel—both having served as graphic designers under art director Marvin Israel (1924–85) who had been one of Feitler's instructors at Parsons. Known for taking chances, Feitler and Ansel pushed Harper's to its limits. Under Feitler's and Ansel's direction, Harper's became one of the first national publications to photograph and feature an African American model. After leaving Harper's, Feitler got involved with Ms., a liberal feminist publication founded by Gloria Steinem and Dorothy Pitman Hughes. Katie Holmes is a UK-based runner and charity consultant who loves cross country, track and park run. On her website she shares the stories of female runners over 50 and highlights their achievements.   Katie is also an independent sports historian, focusing on the history of women's endurance running. David Lowe (Australian Policy and History): Trump tumult and the Australian-American alliance in historical perspective The Trump phenomenon has caused many governments to think hard about the nature of their relationships with the United States. In the case of Australia, amidst the shock and confusion, it may even trigger the sort of questioning of the ANZUS Security Pact (1951) that historians have thus far been unable to stir. To date, ANZUS and the oft-recalled memory of 1 million American soldiers passing through Australia in the Second World War, have constituted mnemonic foundation stones for thinking about the intertwining of American and Australian security. But just as the numbers of US war veterans have rapidly dwindled, so too does ANZUS suddenly look fragile. While it would be rash to say recent events have opened up a new space for historians in public conversation – such has been the continuing bipartisanship on the virtues of the American alliance – they have invited greater reflection. I suggest that historical perspective has much to offer at this time. Through analysis of Australian foreign policy-making and Australian-US relations at different times since the creation of ANZUS, I venture that, far from a stable ‘insurance policy’, the security pact has often shifted ground for Australian leaders. This has produced both anxiety and opportunity. The imprecision in the Australian-US security relationship has encouraged Prime Ministers to narrate its importance in ways that strengthened their leadership. The arrival of Trump might break an executive hold on the story, and enable a healthier sense of historical perspective that informs policy thinking about next steps in the relationship. David Lowe is Chair in Contemporary History at Deakin University and co-founder of the Australian Policy and History Network. He has published widely on Australia in world affairs and modern international history, including the recent book with Carola Lentz, Remembering Independence (Routledge, 2018) and the edited book The Unfinished Atomic Bomb: Shadows and Reflections (Rowman and Littlefield, 2018) with Cassandra Atherton and Alyson Miller. He is currently working on three projects: histories of Australian overseas diplomatic posts; a history of Australia’s foreign aid program; and an international history of the Colombo Plan for aid to South and Southeast Asia.
