This week, Marina and Jemma dive into a whirlwind of chaos and clarity—from the Lionesses' triumphant Euros win (yes, again) to the surreal scenes in Epping, where far-right protests collided with police apathy and a mob of counter-protesters. The Lionesses win was surely a source of joy for all England fans, surely? Er, sadly not, and one man in particular went to the trouble of calling up on LBC to express his disgust.Still, at least the police appear to be growing tired of arresting pensioners in kagoules at the ongoing Palestine protests and then there's the soft launch of a new left-wing political party to discuss. Will the Corbyn and Sultana proposition split the vote or bring radical change? Marina and Jemma discuss. Zarah Sultana speaks to Novara Media exclusively about why she resigned from the Labour Party, what the plan is with her new political party founded with Jeremy Corbyn and how the left can defeat Nigel Farage.
Jeremy Corbyn and Zarah Sultana have finally launched their new party, but it's off to a bumpy start. They unveiled 'Your Party', but had to quickly clarify that was not in fact the new party's name, and that will be decided on by a member's vote. He also had to play down claims of a split already. However, if the so-called Gaza independents join forced with Sultana and Corbyn, the organisation that's not called Your Party could have enough MPs to outnumber Reform UK. What does it mean for the left – and can they get their act together?Elsewhere, Tim discusses the slightly more organised Reform UK, the subject he wrote about in this week's magazine – and how it's no longer a case of can they win, but can anything stop them. Megan McElroy discusses with Tim Shipman and James Heale. Become a Spectator subscriber today to access this podcast without adverts. Some sore heads on Coffee House Shots this morning, after last night's Spectator summer party. But while we were having fun, a drama was brewing in the Labour party after it was finally confirmed that Jeremy Corbyn is starting a new left-wing party... or is he?The news was broken last night by another MP: Zarah Sultana, a long-time admirer of Corbyn. Elected as a Labour MP in 2019, she lost the whip last July for voting to lift the two-child-benefit cap. However, after discussions with figures within the Labour party, it has become apparent that Sultana took many of those involved completely by surprise. She has, in the words of one, ‘completely jumped the gun – no ideas had been properly decided'. It has plunged the new party into a crisis even before its creation. What next for Corbyn's splinter party?Lucy Dunn speaks to James Heale and Michael Simmons.Produced by Oscar Edmondson.

One year of Labour - and Zarah Sultana quits!
It was the early morning hours of April 27th, 1865. The steamboat Sultana was overcrowded, bearing a load of souls over five times it's capacity. ...

I'm back this week with four more shipwreck stories. We'll start with the horrific explosion of the Mississippi river steamboat, the Sultana in 1865. Next, we'll tackle the Titanic which famously sank in 1912, killing around 1,500 passengers. On to another famous ship, the Endeavor. The Endeavor was the British naval ship used by explorer Captain James Cook during his first voyage of discovery which landed him in Australia, New Zealand, and Tahiti in the mid 1700s. Later the ship changed hands and was eventually used and intentionally sunk during the American Revolutionary War. Finally, I'll end with what is, quite possibly, one of the most controversial shipwrecks ever found, the San Jose. This Spanish galleon has been called the "holy grail" of shipwrecks because it was supposedly carrying treasure worth up to 17 billion dollars today when it went down in 1708. As five plus countries argue over the San Jose's treasure, the ethical question remains - what should be done with these shipwrecks?Support the show!

Was Keir Starmer's speech unveiling new measures reduce immigration his 'Enoch Powell' moment? Most people would acknowledge that it's not intrinsically racist to discuss the scale of migration to the UK and have measures in place to regulate it. But as the Prime Minister laid out his plans in Downing Street this week, the language around it was horrifying to some Labour supporters. At the same time as saying that he celebrated diversity, Starmer said that UK risks, “becoming an island of strangers, not a nation that walks forward together”. As backbench MP Zarah Sultana pointed out, this echoed the infamous 'Rivers of Blood' speech made by Enoch Powell in 1968. Sultana – currently suspended from the Labour whip - said that Starmer's words “add to anti-migrant rhetoric that puts lives at risk." Adrian Goldberg is joined in conversation by Byline Times political editor Adam Bienkov. This is the edited version of a live broadcast on BylineSupplement.com Learn more about your ad choices. This spring marked the 160th anniversary of the worst maritime disaster in United States history. The Sultana left Memphis on April 27, 1865, carrying three times the number of passengers for which it was designed. Tragedy struck later that evening when the boilers ruptured, causing the steamer to explode. Many were killed immediately in the blast, while others were crushed or died from burns, hypothermia or drowning. Of the approximately 2,400 people on board, about 1,800 died. Retired Memphis lawyer and author Jerry Potter, who literally wrote the book on the Sultana, joins us to share the story of the disaster and its aftermath. Potter spent more than 20 years combing through archives and thousands of pages of documents to discover what happened and why. In 1992, he published “The Sultana Tragedy: America's Greatest Maritime Disaster,” which is still widely considered the definitive book on the subject. Potter has also been working with others to expand The Sultana Disaster Museum in Marion, Arkansas, to better tell the story. The new 17,000-square-foot museum will feature a partial model of the steamboat, a theater, a research library and more. This episode is brought to you by NWTN Tourism.
Interview with Reeshma Sultana - The Culture News
In which we discuss the Sultana Disaster, which happened April 27, 1865.
This week on Hashtag History, we will be discussing the deadliest shipwreck in American history. On April 27, 1865, a commercial steamboat called the Sultana, carrying over 2,000 passengers (though it was legally only allowed to carry 376) burst into flames due to unresolved issues with the boilers. Between the people that died immediately as a result of the explosion, those that died later of burn damage, and those that died in their attempts to swim to shore, the total number of casualties is estimated to be somewhere between about 1,200 and 1,800.This disaster occurred the same month that marked the end of the Civil War (the bloodiest war in American history), it was the month that marked the first presidential assassination in American history with Lincoln's death, and it was the month that marked the start of the Reconstruction Era.So, like, there was a lot going on…Because of that, much of the disaster was largely overshadowed. Much of the research was extensively neglected. But this is a really important story to tell. The Titanic (which we have talked about before) is so much more popular than the Sultana and yet the number of casualties is roughly the same. When you think about restaurants and dining experiences, you probably don't think about insurance companies. But that's exactly who is behind one of Hartford's new destination restaurants. Hartford Steam Boiler recently opened The Foundry on the 20th floor of One State Street in downtown Hartford. “We consider one State Street to be one of the preeminent buildings in Harford,” HSB president and CEO Greg Barats told the CBIA BizCast. “We've always had a top tier restaurant in here.” Those restaurants include The Polytechnic Club and On20. Like many restaurants, On20 closed during the COVID-19 pandemic. Nearly five years later, Barats said now was the right time to reopen. “We've been seeing an ongoing reinvestment in the downtown Hartford area,” Barats said. “A lot of other restaurants opening in the area, small businesses opening, more people coming back. We thought, okay, this is the time to do it.” Barats said they used the opportunity to reimagine the restaurant space and pay tribute to the company's history and the city's “can do” spirit. “We wanted to make a statement,” he said. “We want to give something back to the community and the capital that I think everybody can be proud of.” The Foundry offers a dining room with panoramic views of the city and multiple spaces that can be used as meeting spaces. Barats said the design honors the city's industrial and manufacturing heritage. The restaurant also has several nods to HSB's background, with rooms and areas dedicated to the company's 158-year history. One room, The Sultana Room, pays tribute to a maritime disaster that led to the company's founding in 1866. The Sultana was a steamship that was bringing prisoners home after the Civil War. Tragically, the ship was overloaded and its two steam boilers exploded, leading to the single largest maritime loss in U.S. history. Because of that tragedy, the Polytechnic Club, a group of engineers, formed HSB to solve the engineering design flaws. “We feel this restaurant's got a soul and we try to bring that through,” Barats said about the importance of leaning into their history. To help realize the vision of The Foundry, Barats and his team turned to a familiar face to lead the kitchen. Executive chef Jeffrey Lizotte is a Connecticut-native and the previous executive chef of On20. “We interviewed a lot of other chefs in the area,” Barats said. “Jeffrey was our pick. He's a hometown boy. He does exceptional work. He's just a great person, and we think he matched us very well.” Chef Lizotte's team has created a menu that Barats described as American Contemporary with a little European flair. “Very familiar dishes, but with more of an elevated, exceptional add to it,” he said. While its doors have been open for several weeks, The Foundry celebrated its grand opening March 11 with Lt. Gov. Susan Bysiewicz and Hartford Mayor Arunan Arulampalam. Barats said they've been embraced by the community and the restaurant is booked 40 days in advance. Barats said HSB's and The Foundry's goal is to be part of the community and help Hartford's resurgence. “I think the more you're involved in, the live, work, play in a city, the more vibrant it can be,” he said. He said with restaurants like The Foundry and others, along with new housing, hotels, and street commerce, the city is returning to that vibrancy. “Every day, every week, every month, we try to be part of that,” he said. “I hope it continues to bring pride, you know, and something to look forward to and come and enjoy here in Hartford.” Related Links: Hartford Steam Boiler Website: https://www.munichre.com/hsb/en.html LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/hsb/ Greg Barats LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/greg-barats/ The Foundry Website: https://thefoundryct.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thefoundryct/ CBIA Website: https://www.cbia.com/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/cbia/
Preserving Time! Pear Chutney is just divine and we can have a general chat about preserving, noting that this is the season for making sauces, chutneys and jams, as well as bottling and freezing fruit and veges too. Pear & Sultana Chutney This is a great all round chutney that is just as perfect with cheese and crackers as it is on roasted meats or vegetables. Pear & Sultana Chutney This is a great all round chutney that is just as perfect with cheese and crackers as it is on roasted meats or vegetables. Ingredients: 1 large onion, chopped finely 1kg chopped pears, not too ripe 2 apples, chopped 250g brown sugar 200g sultanas, feel free to go half n half currants/sultanas 300mls apple cider vinegar 1 tsp fennel seeds 1 tsp all spice 1 tspsalt ½ tsp freshly ground black pepper Method: Slowly bring all of the ingredients to a boil in a saucepan. Reduce the heat and let it happily simmer away for 1-1.5 hours until the onions and pears are truly softened. Mash or beat with an egg beater until it's a little pulpy. Heat 4-5 medium jars in a 150 C oven for 10 minutes to sterilise. Pour boiling water over the lids to sterilise. Spoon the hot chutney into the hot jars. Run a knife around the inside of each filled jar to tease any air bubbles out. Wipe the rims clean and place the lids on tightly. Wipe the jars clean and cool before storing in a cupboard for 3 weeks minimum. This chutney will keep for at least 12 months. LISTEN ABOVE.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Today I talked to Ben Baer and Smaran Dayal about About Spider-Mother: The Fiction and Politics of Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain. Pioneering Indian Muslim feminist Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain wrote speculative fiction, manifestoes, radical reportage, and incisive essays that transformed her experience of enforced segregation into unique interventions against gender oppression everywhere. Her radical imagination links the realities of living in a British colony to the technological and scientific breakthroughs of her time, the effects of hauntingly pervasive systems of sexual domination, and collective dreams of the future, forging a visionary, experimental body of work. Alongside Rokeya's pathbreaking feminist science fiction story “Sultana's Dream,” this volume features fresh and exciting new translations of her key Bengali writings and a superbly informative introduction to her life and work. If her contemporary B. R. Ambedkar urged the “annihilation of caste,” Rokeya demands nothing less than the annihilation of sexism, with education as the primary instrument of this revolution. Her brilliant wit and creativity reflect profoundly on the complexities of undoing deep-seated gender supremacy and summon her readers to imagine hitherto undreamed freedoms. ROKEYA SAKHAWAT HOSSAIN (1880–1932) was born in present-day Bangladesh, then part of colonial India. Despite being deprived of formal education, she became a prominent writer, activist, and educator. The web of her life spanned from the minutiae of running a girls' school in Kolkata to struggles for women's emancipation on the national and world stage. Arnab Dutta Roy is Assistant Professor of World Literature and Postcolonial Theory at Florida Gulf Coast University. Learn more about your ad choices. Slovakia is a beautiful country with a rich history. There is so much to see and do while you're there. While you'll find a lot of traditional breweries serving lagers and old world styles, the new beer scene is still in it's nacient days. Cierny Kamen is raising the craft beer game. We got to try two of their beers: Riwaka Time and Nexthopoit. Riwaka Time is a 5%ABV NEIPA made with...you guessed it...Riwaka hops. Nexthopoit is a 6.2% ABV NEIPA made with Talus, Sabro and Sultana hops. #beer #craftbeer #drinks #neipa #ciernykamen

She shares the fascinating history behind both books, how she redeems her characters, and why she loves dressing up in period fashion. Patrons will get to hear what her next great adventure is going to be.When Hope Sank by Denise WeimerThe Civil War has taken everything from Lily Livingston—her parents, her twin brother, her home. Now she works at her uncle's inn and keeps her head down. Speaking up for her beliefs proved too costly in a part of Arkansas split by conflicting loyalties and overrun by spies and bushwhackers. Emaciated in body but resilient in spirit, Lieutenant Cade Palmer is crowded onto the Sultana with other paroled Andersonville and Cahaba POWs for the journey north. But a fiery explosion on April 27, 1865, rends the steamer and empties two thousand men into the frigid Mississippi River. Recovering from wounds that might end his career as a surgeon but clinging to his faith, Cade threatens both Lily's defenses and her heart. How can she tell him she might've prevented the tragedy if only she'd reported a suspected saboteur's claims? And when the man returns to town and encoded messages pass through the hotel, will Lily follow her convictions to prevent another tragedy?Get your copy of When Hope Sank.A Calculated Betrothal by Denise WeimerThe death of her titled husband means that not only is Tabitha Gage no longer a lady—but she's also abandoned on an isolated Southern Georgia plantation on the eve of revolution. With the fine house and fields sold to a neighbor, she's left with a log cabin on unsettled timber land. Rather than marry the neighbor's son, Tabitha determines to make her own way—and never again be shackled to a man she doesn't love. Sergeant Edmond Lassiter is one assignment away from promotion when he comes to the aid of a red-haired beauty fending off cattle rustlers. Thrown together during an attack at a nearby fort, the Patriot scout and Loyalist widow are surprised by the values they share—including honesty, loyalty, and equality. When Edmond learns the same man who ruined his family is after what little Tabitha has left, he convinces her they should work together to make her land profitable—all while fighting off the British from East Florida and her greedy neighbor, who sabotages their every effort to succeed. Their work together will be a business arrangement…nothing more. But as a British invasion threatens, the truth soon becomes clear—continuing the connection between them will risk far more than their hearts.Get A Calculated Betrothal by Denise Weimer.More about Denise:I write historical and contemporary romance and romantic suspense mostly set in my home state of Georgia.
