Sandria Washington asks the question: How did I go from writing my first short story in crayon to living inside the biggest plot twist of my life (and trust me, God has written me into some BIG ones these first 40 years of life)? She knew from an early age that books, words and stories would always be her saving grace. She remembered when her parents separated and the lights got turned off and her father moving out. Sandria and my mother would walk to the library and she'd let her check out a stack of books. There wasn't any time for her to be sad; She was too busy reading and making up her own stories.Like many little book lovers of the early 80's, She was a school spelling bee winning-Chicago Young Authors writing-Scholastic Book Fair anticipating-Book It! Pizza Hut personal pan pizza eating scholar. By the time Sandria arrived on the campus of U of I, she didn't know what she wanted to do with her life. She minored in English and received her B.S. in Advertising. Her post-college professional career has been....interesting. She's been an editor, advertising account executive, freelance writer, blogger, corporate communications AVP, and an entrepreneur. In between all of this, Sandria has been a theater and film actress, award-winning natural hair model, radio personality, event curator, and certified yoga teacher - just to name a few! As her friends often like to remind her, “Sandria is a whole mood!” she can't argue. Sandria as a creative liked to taking the scenic route in life and loved a good backstory. She believed everything lived through and the tools she picked up along the way - particularly the sudden death of her mother in 2011, a 20 year practice of journaling and being a student of yoga - helped prepare her for April 2, 2018 and the call that would change her life.On the Monday following Easter Sunday and April Fool's Day, standing in her kitchen, she finally made the call to her aunt that she'd been putting off for months. “Is it true that I'm adopted?” Her confirmation set in motion a search not only for her backstory, but the untold stories of other Black adoptees.https://www.blacktothebeginning.com/A Year of Black Joy: A Year of Black Voices Share Their Life's Passion https://www.amazon.com/s?k=a+year+of+black+joy&crid=23WEFDYEVB8GO&sprefix=a+year+of+black%2Caps%2C161&ref=nb_sb_ss_ts-doa-p_1_15Music by Corey Quinn
Fresh “Lev” White hosts Friends Dr. Samantha Coleman and Sandria Washington both discovered as adults they were adopted. Each quickly learned that Black Adoption is common, but taboo to speak about in private or publicly. The voices of Black adoptees – especially those adopted by Black families – are rarely heard. In 2019, Dr. Sam and Sandria partnered to create Black to the Beginning to disrupt the legacy of secrecy, stigma, shame and silence about Black Adoption. "The Woman King," starring Viola Davis, is a box office blockbuster and to our pleasant surprise, it's also a whole Black Adoption story! Take a listen as we break down the many Black Adoption themes in The Woman King as seen through the lenses of two Black adoptees. We're talking search and reunion, the liberation of the Black birth mother, the rise of the orphan, sisterhood, and of course the Three S's: secrecy, stigma and shame. We encourage critically watching/reading movies, television shows, books and magazines to understand how adoption - specifically Black Adoption - shows up in popular culture. Are portrayals accurate? Are you provided with a different frame of reference by being able to externally view these situations? Is there an opportunity to rewrite the narrative? Do creators need to be called out for portrayals that perpetuate negative stereotypes? #DoWriteHollywood These are all questions that we are asking ourselves and look forward to continuing REEL Talk deep dives into the Black Adoption Experience as seen on the big and small screen. Black to the Beginning Podcast hosts, Dr. Samantha Coleman and Sandria Washington, join the podcast today. Dr. Sam and Sandria share with us their lived experiences around finding out as adults they were adopted. They discuss the varied emotions they felt once they found out - such as validated, dejected, and traumatized. Dr. Sam and Sandria talk about how they started the podcast to give voice to adoptees as experts of their own lives. They share how the church can assist adoptees by giving opportunity to hear their voices and experiences. They also warn the church to be careful about using their experiences to compare to being adopted into the family of God, especially as adoptees might be wrestling with learning their adoption status. These women discuss how some adoptees might question God, and that's okay. And how, when it is all said and done, God has chosen all of the adoptees as He knew about their experiences. Tune in to this episode to hear how these brilliant women assist other adoptees with affirming the trauma around being adopted and dealing with the layered nuances as they journey through life. On today's episode, Adoption Talk welcomes friends Dr. Samantha Coleman and Sandria Washington, who both discovered as adults that they were adopted and quickly learned that Black Adoption is common, but rarely spoken about in private or publicly. In an effort to bring conversations around Black Adoption to the forefront, Dr. Sam and Sandria created Black to the Beginning: The Black Adoption Podcast which places the stories of Black and Adopted adults and The Black Family at the center. Hear their conversation led by Melissa Minnich, Senior Manager of Marketing & Communications at Spence-Chapin and fellow adoptee, as they discuss their personal stories, the history of Black Adoption, generational healing, and the critical importance of open conversations around adoption. Having natural enthusiasm and currency for influencing people are just a few of the common benefits of i power. In today's podcast Dr. McKinley is joined by colleague and friend Sandria Simmons who spent most of her career in the banking world. This industry tends to attract more D type people, yet Sandria had a very successful career in both lending and senior management with her primary style being an i. Never underestimate the capability of people who are influencers as they are often wildly successful and add value to any organization.
"There's things in your family that you're just not going to be able to do anything about, because it's really not up to you. It's up to them to want to be a part of this healing, too, and everybody doesn't want to be a part of healing." - Dr. Phoenix In radio, they call it dead air, but on this podcast we call it holding space. There is healing on the other side of the discomfort of listening to the silence. Thank you, Dr. Phoenix, for reminding us of that. Forty years ago at the age of 17, Pamela Phoenix learned that her favorite aunt was actually her biological mother. Learning she was adopted devastated her, and in the process of losing who she believed she was she also lost her family. Since 1998, Dr. Phoenix has been going "Black to the beginning" to the roots of her trauma and helping others along their own healing journeys for more than two decades as the facilitator of the Sankofa Rites of Passage program for youth and adults (Sandria is a graduate of the 2021 adult cohort). Dr. Phoenix's life and work underscores the fact that adoptees are SURVIVORS, there is power in (re)writing your life's story, and being rooted in the divinity of Blackness and your purpose can feel like a return home. This extended episode is not for casual listening. Grab your journal, a cup of tea, and settle in for this intimate conversation. May it shine a light wherever you are on your healing path. “End, Scene.” Join your self-proclaimed movie critics as we dissect and reflect upon the 2011 romantic comedy, “Jumping the Broom.” For all the laughs and giggles at some very cute moments, the topic of adoption finds itself inserted at a very critical time, leaving the characters and viewing audience feeling “sorry” for the protagonist (Paula Patton's character). Why is that? It's as if the word “adoption,” itself is the Scarlet letter. This movie takes us through ALL things “Black to Beginning,” – Black family, Black love, Black adoption, Black traditions, and Black culture. We encourage conversations around all of these topics, but we also suggest that you to begin to critically look at movies, television shows, and magazines to understand how adoption shows up in popular culture. Is it accurate? Are you provided with a different frame of reference by being able to externally view these situations? Is there an opportunity to rewrite the narrative? These are all questions that we are asking ourselves and look forward to continuing our “For the Culture,”episodes to dig deeper into the Black Adoption Experience. This is the Season 1 Finale!
Special Thanks to my Patrons for supporting A Fostered Life! Episode 24 In the non-adoptive world, where people only know of adoption but have not actually lived as part of an adoption story, there is often a romanticization of adoption. Adoption is often sentimentalized and treated as a “happily ever after” story. But anyone living inside of an adoption story knows that adoption is a really complex topic with multiple lifelong ramifications, and there is no single “Adoption Narrative.” And while there is a growing body of work that focuses on transracial adoption and amplifying adoptees' voices, the unique perspective of Black adoptees and Black adoptive parents and Black birth parents is one that we don't hear much about. Dr. Samantha Coleman and Sandria Washington aim to change that. After years of friendship, Dr. Sam and Sandria both discovered as adults they were adopted. Each quickly learned that Black adoption is an inaccurate conversation that often occurs through the voice of everybody except Black adoptees. They kept asking the question, "If every birth has a story, why is no one telling ours?" In 2019, Dr. Sam and Sandria partnered to create Black to the Beginning, an initiative to amplify the Black adoption conversation. Through videos, interviews, and social media connections using #BLACKANDADOPTED, Black to the Beginning aims to support, connect with, and amplify adoptees in the Black community. (One thing I'll clarify before you get into the interview is that I was sitting in a room that got increasingly dark as we were talking and I realized that in my new office, I did not have a lamp or light. I usually work during the day, but we did our interview by Skype at night and by the end of the call, they could barely see me. We had a good laugh about that at the end of the interview, so I wanted to explain so it would make sense when we get to that part of our conversation.) I loved talking with Dr. Sam and Sandria and I'm so excited about what they're doing with Black to the Beginning and the community they are serving with this resource, and I hope you enjoy our conversation as much as I did.
