Series: I Wonder...Title: I Wonder...What does James mean when he instructs us not to show favoritism?Scripture Reading: James 1:27-2:13In James chapter 2, we're instructed not to show favoritism. What does this mean and how can we live it out? James 2:13 gives us the thesis statement: Treat others as God treats you. This week is part 2 of this message where we look at the second part of that statement: how God treats us. We discover that God did not disfavor us orphans, but adopts us into His own family. And God did not favor merit for salvation because we have none.

Series: I Wonder...Title: I Wonder...Why Pray if God's Will Prevails?Scripture Reading: James 5:13-18This summer we are diving into your Bible and faith wonderings. If God is sovereign and if His will will always prevail, why pray? If God foreknows what will transpire, is there a point to praying?
In today's sermon, we'll explore Jesus' original vision for the church. Because, as it turns out, our typical ways of ‘doing church' are pretty small and (honestly) very boring compared to the bold, adventurous vision of church Jesus puts before us. So today, we'll begin thinking about how we can more faithfully ‘do church' the way Jesus intended, starting with how we pray. Come ready to be challenged and inspired to play your unique role in the divine mission of Jesus. Scripture Reading: James 5:13-18 Share: Know someone who needs this message right now? SCRIPTURE READING: James 1:1-11 It is said, “Faith is seeing light with your heart when all your eyes see is darkness.” It is trusting in the perfect plan of God even when «things fall apart. » Faith does not grow by chance; it grows by choice. The author of the letter of James begins his writing with an exhortation to persevere in times of trials. He makes it clear that it takes faith to access God's blessings. Writing about the need to pray for wisdom when one lacks it, he has this to say: “…Prayer must be made with faith...Article Link
Day 20 Prayer Point: Praying for Healing Scripture Reading: James 5:14-16 Jas 5:14-16 NIV Is any one of you sick? He should call the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord. (15) And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise him up. If he has sinned, he will be forgiven. SCRIPTURE READING: James 3:16—4:3 Mark 9:30-37 Let truth be told, there are people out there who do not like to see good things happening in the lives of others. They are governed by the axiom: “If I can't have it, neither can you.” Consequently, they initiate or accelerate a process of drowning good news with bad news and throwing dust into eyes that are fascinated by the success of others. Friendships and relationships have been destroyed on account of this monstrous behavior. At the heart of such destructive conduct is unbridled self-ambition. Scripture Reading: James 5:7-11 Be patient and stand firm, because the Lord's coming is near. James 5:8 One afternoon a boy planted a package of seeds to start a garden. The next day he returned to look for the new plants, but they hadn't sprouted yet. So he dug them up to understand what had happened. We are a lot like that. We expect immediate results. Maybe you have heard the American prayer for patience: “Lord, give me patience—and I want it now!” But only when the fruit of patience is allowed to mature slowly will we ever taste its sweetness. In The Way of Christian Living, a book on the fruit of the Spirit, John Timmerman relates his discovery of the essence of patience. He grew up in a house with a drafty bedroom, and his parents would close that room in the winter and use it only to store Christmas presents. John would sneak into that room and delicately shake each package to guess the contents. But whenever he went into that room, his mom and dad would notice the rush of cold air in the house, and they would catch him in the act. The presents had to wait until Christmas morning. John learned to wait even though he didn't feel like it. Patience involves waiting with anticipation. Just as the farmer waits for the rains to help grow his crops, so we wait with expectation for God's promises to be fulfilled. Patience involves awaiting God's time without doubting God's love. This means waiting without worrying, complaining, or demanding that God should satisfy our time table. Lord, waiting patiently is hard for us. Spirit, please give us the patience we need for a life of fruitfulness in Jesus. Amen.

[4] But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing. [5] If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. [6] But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. [7] For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord. Scripture Reading: James 5:13-20 The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective. . . . James 5:16 In the book Huckleberry Finn, the main character—Huck, as he was called—needed fishhooks. Someone had told him that God always answers prayers, so for three days Huck Finn prayed for fishhooks. But he received none. So he concluded: “There ain’t nothing in it.” James tells us that the prayers of a righteous person are powerful and effective. Jesus said that if we ask anything in his name, he will do it. In Isaiah 65:24 we’re told that God answers before we even call on him. And yet there seem to be so many unanswered prayers. We pray for healing, but healing doesn’t happen. We ask for open doors, but one door after another slams shut. We plead with God to help us overcome an addiction, but there’s no change. Does God answer prayer? Of course he does. But prayer is not meant to give us anything we might want. God promises to give what we ask for when we ask in line with his will for our lives and for his world (1 John 5:14-15). We pray in order to connect with God and to share how thankful we are for who he is and all he has done for us. Praying is our communication line with the Lord. He hears all our prayers and answers them according to our needs and according to his will. Thank you, Lord, for hearing us and for answering our prayers. Help us to understand that you know exactly what we need, and that you answer our prayers accordingly. Amen.

Colossians 2:8 ESV See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ.

What do you think about lukewarm soup, water, or coffee? Some Christians have a faith that is lukewarm and unappealing. For some reason, many of us lose our zeal, enthusiasm, and passion for the faith. We seem to float on our faith like a life raft not looking for more from our faith in Christ. In this study of the seven churches of Asia, Christians learn how Jesus see churches and what Christ expects. In Revelation, Christ spoke to the church at Laodicea urging them to be zealous and repent. Christ described them as lukewarm because their works were neither cold nor warm. Jesus declared that He would spit them out of his mouth. Jesus affirmed that He rebukes and disciplines those whom He loves. When we as Christians drift in our zeal, how can we restore that enthusiasm? This lesson will help.
