Sharing we like. Oversharing, not so much. And sometimes the kindest thing you can do for others is close up that kimono of yours. Or so say Matt, Rich, and their guest host, cloud consultant and entrepreneur Jamison West. They also have some things to say about SolarWinds MSP’s soon-to-be new name and the security landscape in 2021, not to mention cloud management, a topic they discuss with RMM pioneer and now cloud identity management CEO Peter Sandiford, of Zerotek (http://www.zerotek.com/). There’s also a quick look at an antique from Jamison’s tech museum that’s less than a year old. It looks like a desk phone. Because it is. Then stick around for an incisive discussion of security best practices for the “new different” we’re living in with Tim Brown, vice president of security at SolarWinds. This SMB Community Podcast is the sixth in a six-part series entitled Go To Market with Remote Support Service, with Dave Sobel, Senior Director of MSP Evangelism at SolarWinds MSP. Dave starts out this episode focusing on using the Take Control tool as a way to differentiate yourself from other service providers. More specifically, he has a great analogy about the place of Take Control in your offering. Rather than “selling” this tool, bundle it with everything you do and sell the total service. Reporting is a huge component in that differentiation. You can generate a lot of information per-client and per-user. These are great for showing clients what they’re getting for their money. Plus you can access recordings of all sessions, track time, and provide the client with regular tracking information. Even if they never look at these reports, they’ll think it’s cool that you offer them. The recording option is particularly nice. You can record to the cloud. You can share these recordings with clients. You can add searchable notes, which then allow you to review your actions in detail if necessary. Dave makes an excellent point that you can move away from fear-based selling that is so common with security products. With Take Control, you can engage clients and prospects with a product that they’ll want to buy. As Dave says, no one likes to be sold, but people love to buy! Show them a cool tool that they will want to have in their company. It’s a great way to get started with SolarWinds Take Control! This SMB Community Podcast is the fifth in a six-part series entitled Take Control and the Customer Experience, with Dave Sobel, Senior Director of MSP Evangelism at SolarWinds MSP. In this episode, we touch on many features of the Take Control tool designed to help you improve and manage the Customer Experience with your technology consulting business. Some of these features are built in (and configurable/customizable). Others come into play as a result of agreements or policy decisions you make with the client. Offline options = Create business-focused policies. e.g., what is “privacy” at each client? Work with the client to help them to create their employee-facing policy regarding monitoring and privacy. And of course you can agree on the level of reporting that clients will receive. In fact, you can use this to help the client set policies about which software you are authorized to uninstall and what kind of reporting they expect regarding their employees’ computing habits. Dave mentions that you can set higher priority for your managed service clients vs. break/fix clients or folks who aren’t customers yet at all. As we mentioned in another podcast, you can use the Take Control app to help the client create terms of service. This is great for setting expectations with your primary contact as well as with end users. Dave explains how you can use Take Control to set up a “help desk” queue so users actually get estimated wait times as well as notices about where they are in the queue. This can relieve end user anxiety and frustration. This can be used for existing clients via a button on your web site. In fact, it can be used for strangers to go through your web site and request help. Dave calls that a “sales lead.” We also touch on juggling simultaneous sessions, providing client training, focusing on one-to-one communications, getting the most out of the licenses As always, lots of good information here. This SMB Community Podcast is the fourth in a six-part series entitled Episode IV: A New Hope for Security, with Dave Sobel, Senior Director of MSP Evangelism at SolarWinds MSP. As you might imaging, the Take Control application from SolarWinds MSP has lots of security built in. In particular, we talk about all the little security-related details that many people don’t worry about. This includes securing endpoint connections, clipboard access, passwords, and more. Dave gives some good information on the two-factor authentication you’ll experience within Take Control. All that is paired with an authenitcator app that uses unique one-time-use passwords that are managed automatically. If you think about it, a remote control tool gives your staff total access to all client secure data. And with multiple sessions into multiple clients, someone has to make sure that all those sessions are independently secured – and secured from each other. Take Control builds all that security in from the start. We also talked to Dave about GDPR, HIPAA, and the privacy laws we’re seeing across the globe and within local and regional governments. With the new higher standards, technology consultants are responsible for reporting breaches – to the public as well as to your clients. So the question becomes: Can you afford the reputation hit of being breached and having to report that data breach publicly? I really liked the information about levels of access and policies around technician access to end user machines. Within the Take Control tool, the client can configure the level of “privacy” they want their employees to have. For example, you can work with the client to approve or not approve announced and unannounced sessions. Also, you can develop notifications to end users about what they can expect with regard to company data as well as personal data. Dave makes a good argument for using this security setup as a selling point. It certainly makes the point that you take client security and privacy seriously. The interview also introduces the new Take Control Secrets Vault. This is a great tool for managing secure information so that it is never moved outside of the remote session, the technician doesn’t access actual passwords, and the secure information isn’t even available unless a logon screen is asking for credentials. Dave goes into detail here. Very cool stuff. This SMB Community Podcast is the third in a six-part series entitled Successfully Implement Your Cloud Service Bundle, with Dave Sobel, Senior Director of MSP Evangelism at SolarWinds MSP. For six episodes, we’re talking about how to get the most out of your remote control tools – and make more money. I really wanted to include this discussion of implementing cloud services in this podcast series. As you may know, I am a huge advocate of bundling your cloud service offering in order to maximize profit and client stickiness. So, we start off with a discussion of setting up the agent and creating default configurations. Here’s the bundle we are discussing: After that, Dave walks us through mass deployment. This is a very cool feature, and one that you might expect from a remote management tool. Dave also goes into detail about customizing your “terms of service” within the app and protecting yourself legally. After all, remove control of client systems is a very serious undertaking. You need to agree with clients on what kind of access you will use (visible, invisible, with prior arrangement or without, etc.). And, finally, we discuss several other opportunities to customize the Take Control applet. As always, I learned a lot in this interview and I encourage you to give it a listen. This SMB Community Podcast is the second in a six-part series entitled Break-Fix vs. Managed Services, with Dave Sobel, Senior Director of MSP Evangelism at SolarWinds MSP. For six weeks, we’ll be talking about how to get the most out of your remote control tools – and make more money. Right off the bat, you might think that Dave and I would wave our hands and dismiss Break/Fix as a business model. But the truth is, there are still lots of people making money with “on demand” or “as needed” tech support. It is the right solution for some clients. It’s also a great way to get started as an IT solution provider. So we start out with our definitions of both break/fix and managed service. The next question is, how do you maximize revenue with the break/fix model? As Dave says, you have to figure out how to use your time as wisely as possible and bill for as much of your time as possible. And even though tools like Take Control were developed to help MSPs make more money by leveraging their time better, they also work for break/fix companies. After all, both tools and processes can help you become more efficient. Then, of course, you get to some of the added features that allow any company to offer a higher level of service. With Take Control, this includes recording sessions, tagging the recordings with searchable keywords, providing more timely support, and more. Best of all, Dave points out, you can start charging break/fix clients a small monthly fee to have access to this higher level of support. In addition to offering better service, you begin to taste that juicy good recurring revenue. And who knows? You might just decide that you can start transitioning those clients to full fledged managed service. Once again, I learned a lot in this interview and I encourage you to give it a listen. This SMB Community Podcast is the first in a six-part series entitled Remote Control Deep Dive: Build and Grow Your Business, with Dave Sobel, Senior Director of MSP Evangelism at SolarWinds MSP. For the next six weeks, we’ll be talking about how to get the most out of your remote control tools – and make more money. Here, Dave talks about the core features of the SolarWinds MSP’s Take Control tool. These include one-to-many scripting and recording the control session. Take Control was built specifically for the SMB market. As Dave says, this is not an “enterprise” product watered down for SMB or a home product stretching to be the right solution. Dave gives us a long list of questions to ask when you go shopping for a remote control tool. And, finally, Dave covers billing. After all, the bottom line is the bottom line. He covers some of the key elements of squeezing as much money as possible with the right remote control tool. And of course he touches on the questions of security, performance, and managing all clients and devices from a single dashboard. I was surprised to learn about some of the cool features he mentions, including adjusting the amount of bandwidth used, recording sessions with notes, and managing multiple sessions at the same time. It’s ironic that I use this tool and didn’t realize how little I have actually been using. Bottom line: I learned a lot in this interview and I encourage you to give it a listen. What kind of sandwich do you see when you look in the mirror? Something to ponder while you listen to Matt, Rich, and guest host Joshua Liberman rap about the news from IT Glue’s GlueCon event, SolarWinds MSP’s outsourced SOC offering, a new cloud management platform from Linksys, a review of the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon (6th Generation), and more. Oh, and the correct answer is “foot-long Chicken & Bacon Ranch Melt.” Not sure why, but it is. Subscribe to ChannelPro Weekly! Rallying after a humiliating interview recording mistake (you’ll have to listen for the unfortunate details), Matt and Rich explore Kaseya’s big integration announcement with IT Glue, the free money SYNNEX is handing out for mobile activations, SolarWinds MSP’s new single sign-on functionality, D&H’s plan for century number two, an if-it-ain’t-broke-don’t-fix-it USB hub from D-Link, and more. They also have a lot of trouble—even with the assistance of a calculator—trying to translate zettabytes into petabytes and terabytes. Math, apparently, isn’t their strong suit. I had a great chat with my friend Dave Sobel, Senior Director of MSP Evangelism at SolarWinds MSP. We covered a broad range of future-looking topics – and how they might affect us in the small business space. Dave is an author and former managed service provider. Note: This is NOT a vendor-centric podcast. Dave is a tremendous thought leader in our community and I’m always happy to catch up with him and talk about where he sees the world of technology headed. As our IT systems become ever more complex, with more data, devices and ways of working, the demands on our systems and ensuring they are always operating efficiently grow. This in turn presents us and our IT teams with a whole new range of management challenges. Systems management has always been a challenge for organisations, how do we keep on top of an ever-increasing amount of systems ? how do we ensure they remain secure and patched ? and how do we cope with our users and their multitude of devices and ensure we can effectively look after them?. Like most of our technology, systems management is changing, but how? And what should we expect from future management solutions? That's the subject of this weeks podcast, as I'm joined by returning guest Dave Sobel. Dave is Senior Director of Community at SolarWinds MSP. As part of this role, Dave is also charged with looking at the future of systems management and what these platforms need to include in them to continue to be relevant and useful. Dave provides some excellent insight into the way the management market is shifting and some of the technology trends that will change and improve the way we control our ever more complex yet crucial IT systems. We discuss a wide range of topics including; Why looking at the future is such an important part of the IT strategists role. Why we need to rethink how we see a "computer" and how this is leading to a proliferation of different devices with the emergence of Internet of Things (IoT). The part Artificial Intelligence is going to play in future systems management as we try to supplement our over stretched IT staff. How increased automation will be crucial as part of systems management. Finally, we look at the move to human centric rather than device centric management. We wrap up looking at how smarter systems management is going to allow us to free our IT teams to provide increased value to the business, as well as looking at a couple of areas you can focus on today, to start to look at the way you manage your systems. Hope you found the chat as interesting as I did. Until next time, thanks for listening. You'll find full show notes here:- https://wp.me/p4IvtA-1yj
With just hours to go until Turkey Day, Matt and Rich fill your plate with meaty discussions about VMware on Azure, ISL Online’s affordable remote access solution, opportunities in the industrial Internet of Things, the merits of inkjet printers, and more. Then it’s on to dessert in the form of a recorded interview with SolarWinds MSP’s Dave Sobel about some “beyond the roadmap” innovations that may—or may not—be headed to an RMM platform near you some day. We’d call the whole thing a holiday conflabulation you don’t want to miss... except we don’t actually know what a conflabulation is. Subscribe to ChannelPro Weekly! Back after a three-week hiatus, Matt and Rich get caught up on what happened while they were away, like Datto and Autotask merging, ConnectWise rolling out its new Unite solution, and SolarWinds MSP rolling out a new email security product, cutting the price of its file backup product, and introducing its first “user experience” product. Then they discuss disaster preparedness lessons learned by channel pros during Hurricane Irma, listen to an interview with ConnectWise CEO Arnie Bellini, and explain why Sim City is still the best game EVER. They also fill your head with the dizzying thought that single pane of glass management portals are becoming reminiscent of your TV's picture-in-picture feature. Subscribe to ChannelPro Weekly! Now, sadly, a duo instead of part of a trio, Matt and Rich blitz through several weeks of news, including the launch of Datto’s managed power product and partner marketing platform; the much-discussed demo of a Datto VDI solution at DattoCon 2017; Continuum’s acquisition by Thoma Bravo, the same private equity firm that owns competitor SolarWinds MSP; and ConnectWise’s ambitious plan to build a Lego-like customizable management platform for multiple kinds of technology solution provider. Then Matt takes a look at some gaming hardware and software news from the E3 show, Datto CEO Austin McChord discusses IP cameras and IPOs in a recorded interview segment, and Matt showcases a failed Nintendo virtual reality product from his tech museum and some successful HP gaming notebooks. Listen closely, and you’ll also learn why getting lead generation assistance from Bill and Ed is a bad idea. Be excellent to each other, listeners! Subscribe to ChannelPro Weekly! I think we all accept that as individuals, businesses and organisations, the way we see our data is changing, more than ever we see it as an asset and like any asset we see it as something to treat carefully, ensuring it is stored properly, secured, protected and of course something we are getting value from. A big part of this shift is driven by the technology industry itself, tools, technologies and services are now available that allow us to use our data in ways that previously we had not been able to. However it is not just the technology, it is also how a new breed of service providers is making this technology much more accessible. This is the focus of this week's podcast, as I'm Joined by Dave Sobel, Sr. Director of Community and Field Marketing at SolarWinds MSP. As we look at how these industry changes are enabling us all to get more from our data. We discuss the evolution of what we see as a computer, how the importance of the device has made way to the importance of the data and of course the ever present data security risk. Hope you enjoy the show.. Show notes are here.. http://wp.me/p4IvtA-VD
I had a great conversation with Alistair Forbes, the new Managing Director of SolarWinds MSP (formerly the General Manager at LogicNow). In case you missed the news yesterday, SolarWinds MSP bought LogicNow. LogicNow CEO Walter Scott now becomes the Executive Vice President of Solarwinds MSP. And Dave Sobel retains his title as Senior Director of Partner Community and Field Marketing. I exchanged a few emails with Dave as he’s traveling in Portugal right now. He is very excited and positive about the changes ahead. Change brings uncertainty, and I’ve received lots of emails and requests for information about this merger. So I asked Alistair to join me for a quick conversation to answer the big questions. This interview is about 15 minutes. More details about this interview are on my blog at http://blog.smallbizthoughts.com. As always, I am impressed with the LogicNow team’s openness and willingness to directly answer the major questions being asked online and in the forums. It’s a period major change, so there’s some natural “fear uncertainty and doubt.” But it looks like a great move in the right direction for LogicNow partners.
