Tom Hatch has long thought that as creators and members of the open source world, the current dogmatic views that are shared by so many, need to change. In this episode of The Hacks, Tom and Chunga talk about all of the foundational "stuff" that Tom says isn't working. He says the open source model that we've been using for so long has already started to collapse and will eventually fail. Tom isn't alone in this way of thinking. There are many other thought leaders and open source creators that are saying the same exact thing! Who else is saying this? By this time next year, how different are things going to be?
Happy New Year! Tom and Chunga are back from their extended holiday break! During their time off, Tom went on on a cruise! He also took a trip to Las Vegas to hang out his old buddy Chunga. They had a great time relaxing and doing things that had nothing to do with work. Althought they tried their best, they eventually did end up talking about the world of tech and what people will be focusing on in the new year. Tom has previously said on The Hacks that he thinks 2024 is going to be a "nuts and bolts" year, where people and the tech industry is going to focus heavily on the essentials and simplicity. With that said, he thinks this focus will lead to 2024 being a transformative year. It will be a year that will get credit for creating a foundation for the future of tech, for the next 12 to 15 years! Why does Tom think 2024 is going to such a milestone for the tech industry? Why does he think its going to set the table for nearly two decades of transformation? Listen now to find out! Learn more and get started using Salt, in just a few minutes!

Federal Tech Podcast: Listen and learn how successful companies get federal contracts
Ten years ago, it was a major accomplishment to move an application from a federal on-premises server to the cloud. Fast forward to 2022. There is so much data flooding into a wide variety of clouds used by the federal government that the term “terabyte” is tossed around like a stickie note. Updated terms are being generated to make sense of the large data stores: phrases like “data lakes” and “data warehouses” are being coined to give some structure to the fire hose of zeros and ones. During this increase, large secure systems are being tasked with a transition to the cloud – while preventing attacks and absorbing data twenty-four hours a day. Federal leaders have seen the problem and have attempted to generate ways to understand data being presented from networks, storage arrays, servers, and much more. At this level, automation is the only way to be able to present information in a manner where someone can make a decision. At one level, there is a challenge to get observability of federal systems. Taken to the next level, can we harness data to be able to make predictive decisions? Today's interview with Andrew Churchill gives a view of how technology companies can combine to help understand how the complex federal cloud can be managed. Rather than one ring to rule them all, he suggests assembling a team of disparate skills to be able to take advantage of unique skill sets. Andrew gives an overview of this approach in the interview. He touches on automation and real-time operational intelligence. If you want a deeper dive, he suggests you attend an event called “Cloud Modernization with AWS and Qlik.” It will take place near the Metro in Rosslyn, Virginia on November 14, 2022. It will have subject matter experts with serious federal experience teamed with data scientists and analysts.

Multi-cloud is here to stay, but for all its benefits there are hefty challenges too, such as complexity, heterogeneity, and inconsistent operations. In this podcast, David Linthicum talks with VMware's Richard Munro about the many challenges of multi-cloud and how to solve them – now and in the future. Richard's take is that right now, companies need to use cross-cloud services for more consistency. The future will be about edge computing, better data management, and decentralization.

Federal Tech Podcast: Listen and learn how successful companies get federal contracts
It is unusual to find someone with twenty years of experience in the U.S. Army culminating in a position as the Chief Data Officer of the United States Army Futures Command. However, even rarer to find a person with a PhD. in systems engineering and multiple awards for systems engineering achievement. Yet, we did. Today, we are joined by Dr. Portia Crowe, Chief Data Strategist, Defense, and Applied Intelligence Accenture Federal Services. We are going to try to take that mountain of experience and distill it into a thirty-minute interview. The discussion focused on federal data strategy and best practices to achieve digital transformation in the federal government. Dr. Crowe's challenges have not been insignificant – she had to work in environments where bandwidth is severely limited, even without communications. As a result, her lessons are even more applicable in a federal environment where cloud capabilities and high-speed Internet abound.

We talk Hybrid Cloud Management via Azure Arc with Thomas Maurer from the Azure Advocacy team at Microsoft! This episode features a lot of discussion around Microsoft's hybrid cloud strategy, planning, and management with Azure Arc. Azure Arc brings together management of different clouds into the same UI. You can even setup your on-prem Azure Stack HCI deployments as “Custom Locations” inside of Arc so they appear as sites within the Azure control plane. This management story is becoming critically important. Many IT Pros see Hybrid Cloud as a destination and not a temporary state. The need for these kinds of management tools is only going to grow. With that said, Andy and Thomas spend a good chunk of the episode talking about Hybrid cloud deployments, technologies, and where Azure Arc fits into it all! We hope you enjoy! In this episode What is Azure Cloud Advocate? - 2:12 The Focus on Hybrid Cloud at Microsoft - 10:40 Examples of Hybrid Cloud Deployments - 12:50 What are the different options for Hybrid Cloud in the Microsoft Stack? - 16:14 How does Azure Arc Fit into Microsoft's Hybrid Cloud Story? - 24:51 What Azure Stack option fits best where? - 32:34 For someone new to Microsoft Hybrid technologies, what are some resources to get started? - 36:26 Resources for Azure Stack HCI and Azure Arc Learn more about Azure Arc on the DOJO Webinar on Azure Stack HCI IT Pro Resources at the DOJO Azure Stack Products on Microsoft Docs Microsoft Learn Microsoft Cloud Adoption Framework Thomas's Blog
