Tom Lloyd and Luke Pearson co-founded the hugely influential design studio, Pearson Lloyd, in 1997. Since then, it has gone on to work in areas such as the workplace, transport and health care, with organisations like Virgin, Lufthansa, the Department for Health, and furniture giant Senator. The practice is the Designer of the Year at the Material Matters 2023 fair and will be using the space at Bargehouse to investigate how its use of materials has been transformed over recent years, including projects with clients such as Modus, Batch.Works, Howe, Flokk, Profim and Camira. In this episode we talk about: controversially criticising Arne Jacobsen's classic Egg chair; their installation at Material Matters 2023; marrying craft and industry; how their material perspective has changed; balancing environmental, social and economic needs; why they're still using plastic; building out obsolescence; the aesthetics of circularity; bringing contemporary workplace theory to schools; the importance of visible fixings, durability and repair; working with the aviation industry; the problem with paint; meeting at the Royal College of Art; being drawn into the furniture industry; celebrating their differences; and fearing boredom. Our thanks go to the headline sponsor for this series of the podcast – and the Material Matters 2023 fair – the brilliant lighting specialist, Bert Frank. David Smith and Danni Haughan from Small Wardour return to Flixwatcher remotely to review Dave's choice Hilda and the Mountain King. Hilda and the Mountain King is based on the graphic novels by Luke Pearson, this film picks up from the season two finale of the animated series Hilda. Hilda is now a troll and stranded in troll county. Meanwhile in Trolberg, a curfew is announced due to increased troll activity. Later the students at the local school are shown a safety video about trolls but Hilda's friends Frida and David question the inaccurate information in the film. An adventure ensues to rescue Hilda and turn her back into a human. Fear of the other and tolerance of other cultures are strong themes in Hilda and the Mountain King. It also features strong female characters with agency and opinions - rather than waiting for a prince or on a constant quest for romance. Highly recommended for children (and former children), however, being familiar with the graphic novels or the animated series would be beneficial as not only an introduction to the characters but also to know the events that occurred before. Scores for Hilda and the Mountain King were high for repeat viewing from David and Danni (with support from Danni's children!) and help to give a very impressive overall rating of 4.14. Luke Pearson is a Gamilaroi man who in 2012 founded IndigenousX: a 100% Indigenous owned and operated, independent media, consultancy, and training organisation. As January 26th approaches, I wanted to ask Luke about what he makes of the Australia Day culture warring, his critique of the #changethedate campaign, our national amnesia when it comes to our history and why we need to #changethenation instead. He explains the nature of the ongoing occupation of this country, what political action might bring about material change for First Nations people and why the idea of changing the national holiday is like a gym membership. What are some good movies not set on planet Earth? That was the starting point for this weeks Top 5 as we discuss those films that didn't take place on the third planet from the sun. Predictably science fiction and fantasy movies reign supreme here as we gather some of the best movies in the cosmos, and of course there's a few jokes, although just like Halley's comet , some went right over our heads. This weeks movie review is the 2012 Wes Anderson coming-of-age drama Moonrise Kingdom. Anderson's distinctive visual style and flair for eccentricity is on full display here as he assembles an unbelievable ensemble cast featuring the likes of Bruce Willis, Edward Norton, Bill Murray, Frances McDormand, Tilda Swinton and Harvey Keitel however it's newcomers Jared Gilman and Kara Hayward who steal the show in this film exploring some taboo subjects through Anderson's typically quirky lens.We finish up with a review of Netflix's Hilda. Based on the graphic novel by Luke Pearson, the eponymous heroine is a blue-haired girl who, along with her faithful deerfox Twig, meets the unusual residents of Trolberg. This weeks episode features a troll made our of rock enraged by a bell on his nose, the wood man and a race of tiny invisible bureaucratic elves. Almost all of us managed to watch this and one of the dads even proclaims this as the best children's program he's watched for the podcast! Stay tuned to find out who.We love chatting with our listeners; you can usually find us annoying people on twitter - @dads_film - on Facebook, or via email at baddadsjsy@gmail.com.Until next time, we remain...Bad Dads

Another day, another Netflix show. But HILDA stands out from the crowd. It's packed to the brim with charm, smarts, and some pretty incredible world-building, to say nothing of Luke Pearson's amazing art and character design. We discuss the relentless courage and optimism of Hilda herself, the super fun adventures she gets up to, and how the show dramatizes the pros and cons of City vs Rural upbringing. Hilda's a definite gem - don't miss it!

„I want to fight the bad guys. Danke!

Luke Pearson is a location sound mixer based out of Louisville, Kentucky. He's a graduate of Berklee College of Music.
It's our last episode before Christmas so gather round as I'm joined by Luke Pearson to review the festive-sounding The Perfect Tree. After his scathing review of North Pole, will this candle fare any better when it comes to Name, Label, Colour and Scent? Will it end up on the naughty or nice list? There won't be an episode next week because it is Christmas! https://twitter.com/PodcastIKnow For more Luke, you can visit: https://twitter.com/thatlukeperson http://lukepearson.com/ And for more me, check out: http://www.timothywinchester.com https://twitter.com/PeopleIKnow

Time Codes: 00:00:27 - Introduction 00:03:06 - Roundtable discussion with Charles Hatfield and Krystal Howard 01:25:00 - Wrap up 01:27:49 - Contact us For this Young Readers show, Paul and Gwen change things up a bit by hosting a roundtable on the state of children's and YA comics with two amazing scholars: Dr. Charles Hatfield, professor in the department of English at California State University, Northridge, and his new college, Dr. Krystal Howard, an assistant professor who is dual appointed in English and Liberal Studies. The conversation in this month's episode includes a number of timely topics, including the way scholars define children's and YA comics, the challenges and benefits of teaching children's comics, and the exciting formal aspects of comics, as well as other categories, such as verse novels. Charles had just returned from the San Diego Comic Con, and he shared a list of sessions that were held in conjunction with SDCC at the San Diego Public Library, as well as commentary on this year's nominees in the three award areas devoted to young readers: Best Publication for Early Readers, Best Publication for Kids, and Best Publication for Teens. Another rich topic for discussion among the panelists was the portrayal of children in comics written for adults. Recent releases mentioned in this regard included Emil Ferris' My Favorite Thing Is Monsters, Nick Drnaso's Beverly, and Brecht Evens' Panther. Recommended children's texts that seem to be breaking conventions include Eric Orchard's Bera, the One-Headed Troll, Drew Weing's The Creepy Case Files of Margo Maloo, and favorite texts to teach included Luke Pearson's Hilda series, Barry Deutsch's Hereville series, and Lewis/Aydin/Powell's March series, among others. If listeners have been looking for a good list of must-read children's and YA comics, this roundtable delivers on that count.
This week on Fourth Estate we spoke to Luke Pearson, the founder of @IndigenousX. With a following of almost 30,000 people on Twitter and a weekly piece published in the Guardian,@IndigenousX is a successful media platform for Indigenous stories told by Indigenous people. On the fifth anniversary of @IndigenousX (March 15, 2017), host Olivia Rosenman talked to Pearson about where the idea came from, why what it does is so important in a media landscape that has long ignored Indigenous stories, and how he hopes to see @IndigenousX continue to develop. Fourth Estate is produced by 2SER 107.3 radio in Sydney and is broadcast across the Community Radio Network in Australia. Support @IndigenousX here: https://www.patreon.com/IndigenousX

Luke Pearson and Dan Berry talk about Luke's entrance into comics, his process and responding to compliments.
Recorded at the Patrick Centre in the Hippodrome in Birmingham as part of the Birmingham Zine Festival 2012. This was recorded in front of an audience, and we make reference to many wonderful images that were being projected throughout the show. You'll unfortunately have to imagine what these may look like or visit the artists at their respective sites; Lizz Lunney, Philippa Rice, Luke Pearson and Marc Ellerby. Hosted by Dan Berry.
We got together in the sticks to talk DC, Astonishing Spiderman & Wolverine, Nonplayer, X-Men: First Class, American Vampire, Rocketeer, Luke Pearson's Hildafolk, Becky Cloonan's Wolves, 30 Days of Night: Night Again, Skullkickers, Planet of the Apes... Which is nice.
