As an endurance athlete with a zest for adventure, Sonja Wieck explores the bigger questions in life and while pushing the boundaries of what is possible. Sonja joins Nick for a very special episode, in which she talks about her perspective when it comes to achievement, why struggling against adversity is a gift in itself, and why focus and persistence are the key to success. KEY TAKEAWAYS Running towards acceptance and love from those we value most, can provide an extra level of dedication that allows us to reach higher than we may suppose Whatever goals you have set for 2022, we only fail if we stop trying. Dig in, get focussed, and be clear about your why. Visualisation can make the difference between breaking through the finish line and becoming an also-ran. Be clear about what you want, and try to visualise the challenges you may face along the way in order to help you prepare beforehand. Often we do not recognise that the fruits of the race come from not winning or even competing, but from the efforts we put it before. The journey is where the value lies. BEST MOMENTS 'What I know now is that I really only take action if something lights me up inside' 'The struggle is the gift' 'I can be pretty stubborn when it comes to my own internal light' 'When you win and when you lose, you have to come to terms with who you are as a person' VALUABLE RESOURCES  Scale Up with Nick Bradley: scaleup.vip/podcast Scale Up Your Business, coaching/consulting: https://suyb.global Join the free Scale Up Your Business community: scaleup.vip/community Take the SUYB Predictable Growth Assessment™, to measure your current business performance and show you where to focus next to get to where you want to be: https://scaleup.vip/PredictableGrowthAssessment    Go Sonja - https://gosonja.com ABOUT THE HOST   Nick Bradley is a renowned entrepreneur, investor, speaker, and business growth expert. Today's episode is a courageous story of a female endurance athlete who went from the top of her game to an emotional breakdown that had her living with thoughts of suicide. Sonja Wieck is a top Ironman triathlete with nothing but passion, drive, and determination. She can be seen leading her group of three men on Team Iron Cowboy on Mark Burnett's new competition show “World's Toughest Race Eco-Challenge Fiji” hosted by Bear Grylls, which can be seen on Amazon Prime.   At the ripe age of 40, she is a 6x Kona Ironman World Championship Qualifier and Competitor, has participated in 18 Ironman competitions, came in 2nd place at Kona Ironman World Female 35-39 age group, was named the Ironman All World Female 35-39 Champion, Tokyo's Joe's Athlete of the Month, participated in multiple Ultramarathons finishing up to 100 miles, ran the Grand Canyon Rim to Rim in 12 hours, and that's just the half of it. Sonja Wieck states her mission is simple. She wants to encourage men and women of all ages that you can push yourself to do the impossible, but if you strive for success and achievement for your own ego, you will be left unfulfilled. It is when you pursue your dreams for your own personal growth, you learn the most about yourself and are able to show up best for others around you. Sonja wants people to know life is about more than ourselves but giving back and helping others, and this is what is missing from competitive sports. IN TODAY'S EPISODE, YOU WILL LEARN:  What it's like to compete in the worlds toughest race (6:05) What led to Sonja's breakdown (10:05) Sonjas feelings surrounding normalizing mental health struggles in sports (16:40) What Sonja's breakdown looked like (18:27) Sonja's breakdown red flags that were ignored (22:59) What helped Sonja cope with her symptoms (25:42) The concept that was one of the hardest things for Sonja to break down in therapy (30:15) What Sonja was feeling when she was having suicidal ideations (35:02) The advice she would give to herself if she could go back in time (41:00) The details behind Sonjas continued struggle with anxiety and how she manages it (42:28) How Sonja went from breakdown to the worlds toughest race (46:38) The practice Sonja engages in prior to making commitments (52:18) I can't wait to hear your feedback on this episode! Today’s guest is an endurance athlete with a zest for adventure.  That zest has taken her from struggling to finish a local fun-run and learning how to swim as an adult; to completing 18x Ironmans, including finishing 2nd in her age group at the world championships in Kona. But if that wasn’t enough, her thriving coaching business saw her ride a wave of success until the day she found the anxiety and panic attack-inducing stress of running her business brought her to the edge of losing it all. But facing the challenges and learning lessons the hard way, she was able to rebuild and went on to participate in what’s arguably the world's toughest adventure race: Eco Challenge Fiji. Now, if you’ve had a chance to watch the race on Amazon Prime, you’ll know why I wanted to speak with her.  Her openness, dogged determination, and the fact that she’s a self-proclaimed “tough chick” makes her totally one of a kind. I can’t wait to share with you the conversation I had with this mother, athlete, and host of the new podcast “Tales of Toughness” - Sonja Weick.

In the summer of 2019  Benji Vargas did a very inspirational thing. He flew to Europe and raced two full Ironman races in a weekend. Ironman Kalmar in Sweden on Saturday and Ironman Copenhagen on Sunday.  If this sounds like an impossible thing to do you will enjoy this episode tremendously. Benji shares how he prepared for this double, how he and some friends made it happen and all the details including how he felt afterwards. Doing a single Ironman once in your lifetime is something that most people will never do. Doing 2 in a weekend is an even smaller group of people.  It's not just Benji there is a group of people who enjoy challenges like this.  In this episode, we also talk about Luis Alvarez. He is a previous guest on the podcast in Episode 45. We talk about Norseman Extreme Tri and if you are curious about Norseman you will enjoy Episode 17 which is an interview with Sonja Wieck and her Norseman story.  Thank you for listening. Please share the podcast with your friends, leave a review on iTunes and be sure to check out both www.mileaftermilepodcast.com and www.amysaysso.com

Last year in 2015 Sonja Wieck completed the Norseman Xtreme Triathlon. She finished and received a Norseman Black t-shirt which is a very big deal. If you haven't heard of Norseman go ahead and watch this video. You actually hear Sonja's voice at the start and she is also at the finish shedding a tear from relief, joy and satisfaction. Sonja and I discuss everything from why she decided to do this race and how she registered to her getting all undressed in front of strangers in the second transition area. There is a lot of detail in this interview. We discuss how the race works because it's self supported. We discuss her amazing support team. We discuss that she was sick when she did the race and the craziness that was that. Not just a little sick but she found out when she got home that she had pneumonia. We talk about the good decisions she made and the bad decisions too. Sonja discusses that the field at Norseman is basically in amazing shape that makes it to Zombie Hill. Yes - a part of this race is called Zombie Hill. In fact, the tail end of this race is so hard you need a compass and a satellite phone. It's very intense. Sonja and I discuss what it felt like to want to quit at the end of this race and how she worked through it. At the end I ask Sonja the following question: Harek Stranheim says that he set out to create the toughest triathlon on Earth, do you think he succeeded. Listen to the whole thing to hear her answer. Congratulations to Sonja for her finish at Norseman XTreme Triathlon. It was a while ago but still it deserves BIG congratulations. You can find the Norseman XTreme Triathlon information on their website: www.nxtri.com You can find Sonja at www.risingtidetri.com and on Instagram and Twitter @risingtidetri Her personal blog is www.goSonja.com and she's on twitter and Instagram @goSonja ******* You can find the host Amy's thoughts and such at www.amysaysso.com
