Listeners of Love What You Love that love the show mention:Welp everyone, I'm fixing a sign outside my door for a little bit that says “Gone Fishin'”. It's time to take a little hiatus from Love What You Love. I started the podcast two years ago, and it has brought so much joy into my life - and hopefully into yours, too. ut it does take a lot of time and effort, and while I love it and it's so meaningful to me, I have to admit: I'm tired. Because I do everything myself - finding guests, scheduling, interviewing, editing, promotion, the whole shebang - it's a little bit like a second job. A second job that I have to pay to do. So for the time being, I'm on a hiatus. In the meantime, you can check out the back catalog of 59 episodes of Love What You Love. I'm really hoping to be back in the summer after I've had a chance to rest and recuperate, and attend to some stuff going on in my life. Until then, stay well, stay hopeful, and keep on loving what you love. See you soon! Need transcripts? I freaking love podcasts. I love them. I subscribe to way too many to keep up with, I'm always on the lookout for new ones, and in January 2020, I got back into podcasting myself after 10 years focusing on historical fiction. Did I mention I love podcasts? Here's the cool thing: this week's guest hosts one of my very favorite podcasts! Alie Ward is an Emmy Award-winning science communicator. She's a writer, producer, and correspondent on too many dang shows to list (but I will, in the show notes!) But her passion project is her comedic science show Ologies, named one of Time Magazine's top 50 podcasts! It was so fun to geek out with Alie about podcasting. In this episode, we talk releasing perfectionism; west coast vs east coast podcasts; strategic Chardonnay at an Emmy Awards after party; why failure isn't to be feared; finding your authentic voice; and so much more. Alie is a Daytime Emmy Award-winning science correspondent for CBS's "The Henry Ford's Innovation Nation with Mo Rocca,” and host of “Did I Mention Invention?” on the CW. She acts as a consulting producer on Netflix's “Ada Twist, Scientist,” produced by Michelle and Barack Obama-helmed Higher Ground. She has also recently consulted on their series “Waffles & Mochi,” as well as shows for HBO Max and Amazon Studios. She also appears on Netflix's science series “Brainchild” and Science Channel's "How to Build Everything.” Find Alie: https://www.alieward.com https://www.alieward.com/ologies https://www.instagram.com/alieward https://twitter.com/alieward https://www.instagram.com/Ologies https://twitter.com/Ologies Alie's favorite nonprofits: International Myeloma Foundation https://www.myeloma.org Over 100 nonprofits supported by Ologies, in honor of her guests: https://www.alieward.com/ologies-gives-back *** My favorite podcasts (right now): Completely Arbortrary https://arbortrarypod.com/ Ear Biscuits https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/ear-biscuits/id717407884 Echoes of India: A History Podcast https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/echoes-of-india-a-history-podcast/id1442080847 Fall of Civilizations Podcast https://fallofcivilizationspodcast.com/ Ologies https://www.alieward.com/ologies The Anthropocene Reviewed https://www.wnycstudios.org/podcasts/anthropocene-reviewed The British History Podcast https://www.thebritishhistorypodcast.com/ The History of English https://historyofenglishpodcast.com/ The Lubber's Hole https://lubbershole.podbean.com/ My favorite nonprofits: Humane Society Silicon Valley https://hssv.org Southern Poverty Law Center https://www.splcenter.org Town Cats of Morgan Hill https://towncats.org World Central Kitchen https://wck.org *** We're on Patreon at https://www.patreon.com/lovewhatyoulovepod Hang out with me at https://instagram.com/lovewhatyoulovepod or https://twitter.com/whatyoulovepod LWYL merch! https://society6.com/lovewhatyoulovepod Need transcripts? Before we get started, I just have to note that this is the 50th Love What You Love interview! Thank you so much for being here! I've been lucky enough to work with some of the best around: Zeke Rodrigues Thomas of Mindjam Media was unbelievably helpful in terms of editing and helping me get up to speed, and the delightful Emily White of The Wordary continues to create the best podcast transcripts around. Of course, I've also been super honored to chat with the most interesting people, interested in the coolest things. Speaking of, let's meet this week's guest! Laura Hawkins is the executive director of the Wildlife Center of Silicon Valley whose mission is to provide sick, injured, and orphaned wildlife with exceptional free care, rehabilitation, and the opportunity for release. They also educate the public about coexisting peacefully with local wildlife. It was so cool to talk with Laura! In this chat, we talk ducks that act like dogs; what to do when you find a baby animal; why you shouldn't trim your trees until late October; saving squirrels in India; why it's a really stupid idea to keep a wild animal as a pet; fighting for the underdog; and so, so much more. So, it goes without saying that the pandemic has fundamentally changed our lives - often in horrible ways, sometimes in beautiful ways, and for a few, in transcendent and transformative ways. Heather Hellyer and her husband were on a long RV trip when the pandemic hit and national parks shut down. Looking for something to do, Heather found a nearby herd of wild horses, and a deep, consuming passion was born. Heather chatted with me from her RV in Cody, Wyoming and we talk wild horses' and burros' importance in the ecosystem; Thoreau; the decimation of herd management areas; why you might want to rethink eating that hamburger; which organizations are doing the best work in saving wild horses and burros; where her heart is most at peace; and so much more. Did you know that professional baseball has been played in the United States since 1869. 1869! I'm a relative newcomer to baseball, having started really following my local team (the Giants) about 12 years ago. But today's guest, Andy Walzack, has been crazy about baseball since he was a kid. First as a tradition with his dad, then as an adult with his friends, he's traveled all over the U.S. to visit different ballparks - over 40 and counting! Rick Joosten is a former corporate legal counsel who has traded long days stuck in an office for long walks in nature. A certified Master Naturalist, he’s super passionate about nature - not just what you see out on long hikes, but the nature in your own backyard, too. We talked back in April about the epidemic of feeling nature starved, learning to look more closely, citizen science, and so much more. So find out why Rick loves nature and naturalist programs - and why you might learn to love them too. Rick Joosten on Facebook iNaturalist Master Naturalist Programs by State The New Naturalists Rick’s favorite charities: DonorsChoose "Teachers request funding for projects their districts can't afford, and the charity vets them and serves as a conduit to allow the giver to select and fund or contribute to a specific project they feel is particularly worthy (by location, by type of project, by economic need, etc.). Unlike so many worthy charities, this one facilitates a very concrete and personal connection to a narrow and more modest, yet critical, need. The giver will get specific feedback and thanks from those helped (both the teacher--who will send an e-mail of thanks, often along with wonderful pictures-- and the kids themselves, who will often send handwritten notes and cards/art in thanks). It is the best!" Save Mount Diablo "which has an astonishingly impressive record of success in raising funds to purchase privately held ranches and properties in and around the Diablo Range to protect them from development. They also support public outreach and education, volunteer-led trail hikes, trail and infrastructure development, and restoration of such lands (and effectively advocate for and coordinate with other land trusts, state and local agencies and governments to preserve and protect natural spaces for posterity). Far more than just "park" advocates (not that there's anything wrong with that), they are achieving success on the larger scale needed to preserve wildlife corridors and connected ecosystems that will give threatened species a chance to survive. The "long game" they are playing and winning is something rare and beautiful to see, rivaling what only coordinated government action can typically achieve (and the latter, while impressive, seems to be stagnating and struggling at best, and in some areas, in active retreat)." *** A rotating list of my favorite charities: San Mateo & Santa Clara County Fire Relief Fund World Central Kitchen Have you registered to vote?
