Blue Rain Gallery is pleased to announce an upcoming show of new paintings by Kathryn Stedham titled “Spirit of the West.” This show of new works is scheduled for August 25 – September 9, 2023 with an opening night reception on Friday, August 25th from 5 – 7pm. In a series of landscape paintings contained only by the limits of the canvas, Stedham seeks to project an image of the Southwest that is both enduring and true. She feels a strong desire to be in the Southwest, absorbing all that the landscape has to offer. The vast, wide open topography and rugged formations of New Mexico offer an endless opportunity for creative exploration in her paintings. The artist shares her view of a quickly vanishing landscape. She seeks to capture the rugged escarpments, colorful mesas and hidden arroyos that make the West wild and intriguing. Stedham starts her process in plein air, visiting these solitary places, getting a feeling for the light and how it changes throughout the day to reveal the best possible framework for a painting. Here she creates small, quick plein air studies that she then takes back to her studio to use as information for larger scale paintings that will ultimately convey a distilled impression of the landscape she has so thoughtfully studied. ... Liner Notes: Revealing Chats With Canada's Retro Music Makers
Recording artist Geoffrey Kelly is one of the founders and co-songwriter for the band Spirit of the West. In this chat with host Dan Hare Geoffrey shares: how backpacking in Europe led him to a career in music; why the band “shook up” the folk music world on the west coast; the band's big break and biggest mistake; what Spirit of the West song is used during Hockey Night in Canada; his close relationship with frontman John Mann and how the band dealt with John's Alzheimer's disease and eventual death; what he's doing now, and so much more. Find out about Geoffrey and Spirit of the West on the band's Facebook page @www.facebook.com/spiritofthewest.ca
Vince Ditrich spent 30 years as the drummer and later manager - of the hugely successful band Spirit of the West. After a life of music on the road, Ditrich turned to writing, and in 2021 he released the first of three novels entitled the Liquor Vicar. The lead character Tony Vicar is from Tyee Lagoon, a fictional Vancouver Island town. “He's a failed musician, he always had dreams of great to grandeur, but he was not able to achieve anything. He just wasn't sufficiently talented and he always held the dream," said Ditrich. “So many of the guys I've known through the years, they still have the same hairstyle they had when they were in Grade 11. Same pants, hearts of gold and wonderful guys but they just can't let go of that." The second book, The Vicar's Knickers, is named after the pub that Tony Vicar has opened and is home to an interesting and colourful cast of characters. The author recently signed an agreement with Sugar Skull Films and together the two are actively pursuing a broadcaster for a television series for Tony Vicar and his cast of characters. Ditrich has not retired from the music biz completely. On this edition of Today in BC, he offers listeners of the podcast a track that he recently produced for Travis Matthews, son of Gordie Matthews, guitarist for k.d. Lang and Ian Tyson. It's an original song, entitled 'Diamonds'. We haven't been shy about our general malaise toward Disney's modern predilection for remakes and sequels that feel a bit creatively bankrupt. So imagine our surprise when we watched one of their first ever sequels, SAVAGE SAM, and discovered it's not necessarily a new trend. Ostensibly a sequel to the classic trauma vehicle Old Yeller, this movie is less a fraught coming-of-age tale about a boy and his dog and more a movie where Kevin Corcoran hurls rocks at people and animals before turning into a Disney-fied version of The Searchers.
Roy L Hales/ Cortes Currents -Spirit of the West Adventures had a much better season than expected. Co-owner Breanne Quesnel says that after BC's interprovincial travel restrictions were lifted, last June,“we saw unprecedented demand for our particular outdoor experience.” The kayaking company adjusted their routine to be more COVID friendly. “For example we met customers in Squirrel Cove, instead of transporting them from Quadra,” explained Quesnel. “We didn't accept as many reservations as we had previously; We were trying to keep it slow, limit group sizes and be responsible in that manner.” Spirit of the West still had 80% of the volume they experienced in 2019, their peak year. “Last year was about 10% of 2019,” she added. “We were only taking private levels; We were only running one tour.” Her customers typically come from around the world, but have mostly been British Columbians for the past two years. By the time the U.S. border opened this year, Spirit of the West only had three spots left. “So we did have three Americans join us, but the rest were of our customers all Canadians this summer,” said Quesnel. Though Spirit of the West is based on Quadra Island, they run tours all over the BC Coat. The Broughton Archipelago, Johnstone Strait, Bella Bella area, Nuchatliyz, and Great Bear Rainforest are all popular areas. Four or five times a year, they also come to Cortes Island to embark upon an expedition into Desolation Sound. “The majority of our tours are in the Johnstone Strait region, so based out of Telegraph Cove and into the Broughton Archipeligo,”she said. “We run trip abroad in the winter as well - In Chile, Patagonia, and the Bahamas.” Q/ Where is your favourite destination? “I know it sounds like a cliche, but the whole coast! Everytime I get in a kayak, anywhere I go - you just can't help but stop and pause and love it all. The Johnstone Strait region when you see a whale surface, or for that matter, off Rebecca Spit or in the backyard of Quadra or Cortes. We are just surrounded by beautiful places.” Photo - courtesy Spirit of the West Adventures
I had Museum Director James Burns on today. James is an interesting guy because he's done so many things. He is a curator, a director, an individual who has always loved history and art. It's a fun ride because we get to see what it takes to get in that world, to be in the world of being an executive director for a museum. You can tell from his story that it's not easy. He's gone through many different ideations and iterations of who he is and what he is to finally get to the pinnacle of his career. It's a wonderful thing to do, to be able to actually find your way in life, to do what you want to do. He's going to be the new director of Western Spirit: Scottsdale's Museum of the West, taking over for Mike Fox on October 16th. It's a big job. There's a lot to do and there are a lot of moving parts. We got to talk quite a bit about his new position as well as the opening that they'll be having on October 16th.I've known James for 20 years, as he pointed out during the interview, and have followed his career closely. As a fan of what he's done for the museums that have had the privilege of having him on staff, I can say, without a shadow of a doubt, he is going to do great things for Scottsdales' premier art museum.

Carla checks in with Barney Bentall as he is releasing his newest album after a 5 year hiatus! " The Drifter & The Preacher is the great paradox of a nomadic homebody, and a musical tour de force that could prove to be truly defining for a musician, a songwriter, a friend, a father, a brother, a husband and a son… coming face-to-face with a life lived. Lead single "The Miner," which was co-written and features his son Dustin Bentall, will be immediately available as a download to fans who pre-order the album on iTunes. Barney Bentall hit the music scene as the lead man for Barney Bentall and The Legendary Hearts back in 1988, with his self-titled debut CD soaring to the top of the charts, reaching platinum status in Canada and establishing Bentall as a must-see as a concert draw. The last couple of years have seen Barney Bentall translate his tremendous ability and deep introspection into his 10th studio album, which is an ambitious effort accomplished by one of the greatest storytellers of our time. "This was written for my father-in-law. Bar none, one of the most interesting and intelligent people I have met,” says Bentall. “He taught me many valuable things and gave me the best friend I have. He died with his boots on at the age of ninety-three. I wrote this at my ranch shortly after on a star-studded night.” While plenty of musicians have told stories of their family, Bentall possesses the emotion and interpretive skills to reveal an eclectic range that few could muster, and no more so than in the first single, “The Miner.” Says Bentall, “My son Dustin is a travelling musician. ‘The Miner’ marks the first time we wrote a song together… It started out as a story about Dustin’s grandfather and as a continuation of ‘The Drifter‘. Songs often have a mind of their own and… ‘Life goes where it goes’. When the dust had settled, we ended up with a story loosely based on a good friend of ours. He, much like the two of us, is driving down the road less travelled.” The Drifter & The Preacher also features a collaboration with Jim Cuddy of Blue Rodeo on "Won’t Change The World." Bentall says, “Sometimes a song is the only tool in the chest when you are trying to get back into someone’s favour. My good friend Jim Cuddy jumped in on this one. I swear, that boy gets behind an old tube microphone in a recording studio and puts on a clinic every time.” Inspiration set in not only from his family, but good friends, too. “The Ocean and You (A song for John Mann)” is a stirring song paying tribute to the Spirit Of The West singer. “Around the time we were forming the Legendary Hearts, we had this rustic studio in a millwork shop in the False Creek area in Vancouver. It was a sketchy part of town at the time, but heaven to us. Back in the day, that studio was our Clubhouse. We wrote and demoed ‘Something To Live For’ there, among many other songs. The founding members of Spirit Of The West -- Geoffrey Kelly and John Mann -- became lifelong friends of mine in the early ‘80s. We made their first record in that studio and had a wonderful party or two. Along with our partners/wives, it was an unforgettable and cherished circle. I wrote this song about John and his ongoing courageous fight with early onset Alzheimer’s. It is also about the equally courageous role of John’s partner Jill. God bless ya, Johnny.” Catch Barney Bentall live at the following Canadian tour stops: July 20 – Toronto, ON – Live on the Patio at Roy Thomson Hall July 21 - Mission, BC - Mission Folk Music Festival July 26 - 30 – Calgary, AB – Calgary Folk Music Festival August 4 – Minnedosa, MB – Rockin’ The Fields of Minnedosa Festival August 6 – Comox, BC – The Filberg Festival August 18 – Saskatoon, SK – Rock The River Festival August 19 – Wainwright, AB – Come By The Hills Music F --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/carlas-coffee-house/support
