In this first of a two-part series, Jim Hoecker and Steve Griffith of the Rail Electrification Council describe the organization's mission and objectives, and discuss what's happening with respect to the broader electric grid. How will its transition away from fossil fuels affect the railroads? What are the potential effects of electrification on the railroads? Why should railroads plan to electrify? Are there lessons to be learned from rail electrification in Europe and the Far East? Is there a current example of a rail road right-of-way being used to support transmission development? What is the the role of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) in transmission planning and siting? Are there any policies or funding that can prompt the railroads to electrify? Hoecker and Griffith discuss these questions with Railway Age Editor-in-Chief William C. Vantuono.

This week's episode is solo hosted & recorded by Christian Harris, while he was on his family vacation at a lake house in Virginia. He sits down with a family friend, father and pastor of Osborne Baptist Church in Eden, NC. We touch on his backstory and how he came to be a pastor, as well as some of the unique history of America's Christian founding, dispelling some commonly believed myths about the founding fathers, historical revisionism, America's checkered past with slavery, where we are now as a country and where we can find our hope. NOTES: This Weeks Whiskey: NONE Discussion Topics / NOTES: AW Tozer: The Crucified Life AW Tozer: The Pursuit of God Albert Mohler jr: The Gathering Storm There is "systemic racism" in America... because there is systemic sin in the human heart When we stop having conversations with those who think different than us, we are in trouble. It is possible for our fear to be real, while our fear is not rooted in reality (perception of things being way worse then they actually are). James 1:19 - Be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry. Listen first to understand & learn... not just to respond.

Steve Griffith is the Director and Founder of Sukhavati Ayurvedic Retreat and Spa. He has studied yoga and meditation since the 70’s and is a long term student of The Beatles meditation teacher, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. I sat down with Steve in Bali, talking about the importance of feeling radical love, how to be present, and how to tap into our purpose through intent. Radically Vibrant Steve We have to break through the conditioning that created an unconscious habit of thought patterns that no longer serve us We never totally revert back to our old patterns once we created new habits, we just have moments where we temporarily fall back into the pattern Being solution minded is a mindset that looks for an answer to a problem instead of placing blame for the problem or giving in to a false reality Radically Inspired Clarity Each time we think about a negative event, we trigger the same chemical response and the stress continues past the actual event Our addictions, habits, and routines hardwire our brain into a neurological pattern that keep us in the past and remove us from having new intentions and thoughts We create our story in our mind and then we walk into it just as a director creates a movie Steve Answers… Why did you create the Sukhavati Ayurvedic Retreat? Does it take more than intention to change our minds? What is your perspective on the amount of consumption we are intaking and...are we doomed?! Radically Loved Quotes “Everyone of us has this great gift of being a human, and being a human means we have free will. Whether we exercise it or not is a habitual practice of our past.” “Stress is chemical imbalances that remove the sense of who we are.” “The world is as you are.” More About Our Guest Steve Griffith is the Founder and Director of Sukhavati Retreat and Spa, creating mindful programs and teaching meditation to guests. Should college students be required to study Shakespeare? As American universities examine the role of the liberal arts and humanities in our society, what will—and what should—happen to the Bard’s place in English curricula? The Shakespeare Requirement, novelist (and creative writing professor) Julie Schumacher’s new academic satire, asks just that. Jason Fitger, hero of Julie Schumacher’s 2014 novel Dear Committee Members, returns in her new book. The tactless and ineffective Fitger is now chair of the fictional Payne University’s English department, and he’s been tasked with marshaling the department’s faculty to approve a new Statement of Vision. One obstacle is Dennis Cassovan, the department’s elderly Shakespeare scholar, who insists that the Statement include a required semester of Shakespeare. Hanging in the balance? The English department’s annual budget and its home in Willard Hall’s crumbling basement. Julie Schumacher is a professor of English and Creative Writing at the University of Minnesota. Her novel Dear Committee Members, won the Thurber Prize for American Humor. The New Yorker called it “a comic aria of crankiness, disillusionment, and futility.” Her new novel, The Shakespeare Requirement, was published by Doubleday in 2018. She is interviewed by Barbara Bogaev. From the Folger’s Shakespeare Unlimited podcast series. Published November 13, 2018. © Folger Shakespeare Library. All rights reserved.
