Look out for that bat signal and “make the world safe for democracy”! In this very messy installment of the Six Forgotten Warriors saga, Spidey teams up with aged WWII heroes to stop the Insidious Six and learns to appreciate history as Captain America and Red Skull make their return. We talk about John Semper's reinvention of the historic Black Marvel as a Black man in a way that echoes the Watchmen TV series, a reunion of actors of The Terminator, and how Kingpin is the hottest he's ever been. We're watching Spider-Man: The Animated Series: Season 5, Episode 5: “Six Forgotten Warriors, Chapter IV: The Six Fight Again”. Vote for The Mixed Reviews in The Podcast Awards! Watchmen er WATCHMEN, og det kan ingen forandre, men der er igennem årene kommet mange forsøg på, at “genskabe” universet. Kim og jeg gennemgår dem ALLE, så vi kommer vidt omkring. Meget vidt.
VYS0036 | Infinite Game - Vayse to Face with Joseph Matheny - Show Notes Some rare art transcends reality, some even rarer art seems to create a new reality altogether - the work of Joseph Matheny does both of these things while embracing the trickster spirit inherent in the magickal traditions in which his work has its roots. Joseph talks to Hine and Buckley about Ong's Hat, his "living book" project, widely recognised as the first Alternate Reality Game, and how it took on a life of it's own, not only for the people who were playing it but also for the people who created it. The conversation also turns to synchronicity and how his recent work, the Liminal Cycle, seems to generate synchronicity in the lives of those who engage with it, how his work connects so closely to magick, nature and theatre, his experiences in the North Pole and how they affected his writing, the use of magic in political systems and how the internet we know and love (to hate) today retains the legacy of the ritual magicians and DnD enthusiasts who created it... American Fiction is two films at once – a farcical comedy take-down of white gatekeepers who only want one type of Black storytelling and a beautifully tender drama that underlines the richness possible when filmmakers of colour are allowed to operate outside of the boxes they're often put in. Written and directed by Cord Jefferson, whose past writing credits include work on Succession, The Good Place and Damon Lindelof's Watchmen TV adaptation, the film tells the tale of Monk, a frustrated academic played by Jeffrey Wright, who becomes an accidental literary sensation when a manuscript he writes as a joke, perpetuating Black stereotypes, becomes a best-seller. There's sensitivity beneath the scathing satire of that premise, however: American Fiction is a movie that reels you in with its funny premise, then moves you to tears with its elegant portrait of a family as they search for meaning in grief and growing older. In this spoiler conversation, Cord tells Al what struck him about Erasure, the 2001 novel by Percival Everett that American Fiction is an adaptation of. We get into the personal experiences that helped him relate powerfully to Percival's story – and what inspired the changes from page to screen, such as the omission of a storyline involving a murder by an abortion protestor. Listen out, also, for what Cord has to say about the film's meta ending and the symbolism behind the enigmatic image that closes the film. It's another lightning wife-ening episode as Phil & Jake's better halves Beth & Ali return to rank Bob Saget (R.I.P.), oysters, being a know-it-all, marriage, toilet humor, expresso with an “X”, and chest hair on the List of Every Damn Thing. If you have something to add to the list, email it to list@everydamnthing.net (or get at us on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook). We also have a subreddit!SHOW NOTES: As they brag about in the episode, Jake & Ali recently held one-day-old lambs at Toluma Farms in Sonoma County. If you only watch the show's opening credits, Full House really just seems like a tourism ad for San Francisco. Danny Tanner was America's Dad for Beth & Ali, whereas Phil & Jake's America was raised by Bill Cosby. Phil & Jake talk about a Bob Saget scene in the movie Dirty Work, but they really mean the movie Half-Baked. Here's the Saget bit that Beth watched where he talks about his dad's dirty jokes. Saget gets extra consideration for his work with the Scleroderma Research Foundation. Here's Saget's part in The Aristocrats, and here's the Gilbert Gottfried part. We apologize in advance. Ali mentions that a few hours before recording this episode, she and Jake enjoyed some oysters at The Marshall Store (on California's Tomales Bay). Jake mentions that a few years ago, they shucked their own oysters at Buck Bay Oyster Farm (on Washington State's Orcas Island). They've indulged in oysters in many places, but not yet at The Shuckery (in Beth & Phil's home town of Petaluma, CA). It's an ongoing debate as to whether vegans should justify eating oysters. Amy Schneider was Jeopardy! champion until we jinxed her by talking about it on the podcast (which was recorded two days before she lost). She's the most successful woman ever to compete on the game show. She's the good kind of know-it-all. Jake tried to look up the German "scheisse" song that Beth mentions, but all he could find was this Lady Gaga song. Here's Los Punkitos performing “Caca Culo Pedo Pis”. Phil & Beth are targeted by this Fabreze ad with miniature toilets. Phil talks about Eddie Murphy doing toilet humor in his early act, which is recounted in “Eddie Murphy Raw”. We're still the first full page of search results when you Google shirtless men wearing elaborate angel wings, gold lamé shorts & furry cha-cha heels. We bring up saxophone in rock music, inciting Beth to vocalize the sax riff from “Baker Street” by Gerry Rafferty (which is, contrary to Phil's opinion, rock music). This episode is the second time that Jake has given a free plug to Fort Point's Sfizio Italian Style Pilsner. The X-Men come up a couple of times in this episode, including when Jake speculates that– in light of Beth's pubic hair definitions– Beast is covered in pubic hair, because mutant powers manifest at puberty. Of course, Beast's full-body fur was part of a post-puberty secondary mutation, so Jake's wrong on this one. Chest hair-y men discussed include Burt Reynolds, Tom Selleck and Sam Elliot. Here's a bonus pic of young Sam Elliot from the Mission: Impossible TV show. Phil and Jake are joined by returning guest Matt Hock (from Space Cadet & The Explosion) to rank In-N-Out Burger, and word mash-ups aka portmanteaus on the List of Every Damn Thing.Get Space Cadet's record “Lion On A Leash” on Wiretap Records, listen to them on Spotify, and follow them on Instagram (@space_cadet_band). And go to one of their upcoming shows! If you have something to add to the list, email it to list@everydamnthing.net (or get at us on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook).SHOW NOTES: In the episode, Phil talks about @tweakseason on TikTok. Phil doesn't have TikTok but he has a summary of @tweakseason's activities on his desk every Monday morning. Here's a youtube compilation it's in the genre of "guy walking around NYC". Fast Food Nation by Eric Schlosser is a book about fast food in America. We read it a long time ago but we remember it was heavy on the Carl's Jr. One of the last chapters is about how everything they just said about how bad the industry is doesn't really apply to In-N-Out - they pay their workers better, produce better quality food, etc. Shake Shack is a fast-casual hamburger chain based in NYC (which is now nationwide). According to Phil, the burger is better than In-N-Out but it costs three times as much. We mention Taqueria Diana in Williamsburg again. Go there. Dick's is the place where the cool hang out. The swass like to play, and the rich flaunt clout. It's a burger place in Seattle. In an alternate universe it took off in popularity instead of In-N-Out. Sir Mix-A-Lot is a Seattle-based rapper and HAM radio enthusiast. Waffle House is an all-day breakfast chain based in the Southeast. When fights happen at Waffle House, they often end up on social media. Veggie Grill is a vegetarian fast food chain on the West Coast, as well as in New York and Massachusetts. It's pretty much wherever coastal elites like to be, and it's good food. Taco Time is a Mexican fast food chain in the western U.S., but not California. El Pollo Loco deserves to be ranked later. It's Phil's favorite fast-food chain. "Thighvertising" came up in Phil's search for portmanteaus. He admits Jake was right it should be called “adverthighsing”. James Joyce coined the term “Scandiknavery” in Finnegan's Wake'. It's pretty specific but we're looking forward to using it. Phil thinks “pegacorn is” a bad one because "Winged Unicorn" just sounds better. Other portmanteaus discussed include “bodacious”, “throuple”, “guesstimate” and “chillax”. After plugging his own shows, Matt makes sure to plug our good friend Dave Hause's upcoming shows in November. In this episode, Allison Alexy talks with Prof. Vyjayanthi Selinger, a scholar of Japanese literature and culture. Her research examines literary representations of conflict in medieval Japan, using conflict as the key node to examine war memory, legal and ritual constraints on war, Buddhist mythmaking, and women in war. Our conversation centers on two articles she has published recently. First we discuss “War Without Blood? The Literary Uses of a Taboo Fluid in the Heike monogatari,” published in Monumenta Nipponica in 2019, and “The Rāmāyana and the Rhizome: Textual Networks in the Work of Minakata Kumagusu” published in Verge: Studies in Global Asias in 2021. Topics of discussion include: blood as symbol and taboo, The Tale of the Heike (Heike monogatari), Buddhism and bodily pollution, research methods and surprises, literary representations of law, Hachinoki (Noh play), the Rāmāyan in Japan, translation, homology and adaptation, Chinese translations of Latin, doctoral requirements for training in language and theory, and Lady Triệu in Watchmen (TV show).Dr. Vyjayanthi Selinger is the Stanley F. Druckenmiller Associate Professor of Asian Studies at Bowdoin College. Her first book, Authorizing the Shogunate: Ritual and Material Symbolism in the Literary Construction of Warrior Order, explores how texts from fourteenth century Japan harnessed symbolic understandings of authority to evoke order and contain rupture. If you're interested in learning more about her work, please watch her presentation in the Japanese Studies and Antiracist Pedagogy Project. You can find her on Twitter @jayselinge, where she would be especially happy to discuss the TV show Watchmen and the character Lady Triệu.Michigan Talks Japan is produced by Robin Griffin, Justin Schell, and Allison Alexy and is supported by the Center for Japanese Studies at the University of Michigan.

Carter is joined by "SJW Karen" (a.k.a. Keri in a blue wig) and special guest Mystery Chris. They discuss the woke "courageous conversations" Facebook group (which is neither courageous nor about conversations) in which SJW Karen posted a confession of her white privilege. Chris tells Keri that she inspired him to be less compliant with mask mandates, and then Carter prompts Chris for his take on the difference between older and newer superheroes--does the evolution of the superhero tell us something about culture? Next comes some SuperChat responses. Keri talks about waking up from SJW ideology, and Carter warns that newly "awake" former SJWs should trace the causes of SJW ideology back to their philosophical roots rather than simply advocating that the culture rewind a few years. Chris asks Carter about the Watchmen TV show and confirms that it was the dumpster fire Carter expected it to be, and then Carter gives an update on the Lisa Hanson situation. He also tries to explain the importance of discretion when dealing with legal matters. They end the show with a discussion of YouTube's new policy on downvoting designed to spare woke lefties the embarrassment of getting ratio'ed, an overview on the origin of Antifa, and the banning of mullets by an Australian University. Sean watches the Watchmen. The TV show that is. And... it didn't quite live up to the name. So, we discus sequels, and what we want out of them, and how the Watchmen TV show didn't quite work as a sequel.Also:- The virtues of Limbo and Inside- Paul finally played The Long Dark, which is Sean's favorite game- Sean is playing Cyberpunk 2077, which is a bit overwhelming- What makes a good sequel?- Also, how was that Wonder Woman movie? A lukewarm review...
The Film '89 Podcast's dynamic duo of comic book experts, Haydn Spurrell and John Arminio, return to discuss Watchmen, the beloved comic book creation of legendary writer Alan Moore, artist Dave Gibbons and colourist John Higgins. First published by DC Comics in September 1986, ending in October 1987, the 12 issue maxi-series was later collected as a single volume and would go on to become regarded as one of the all-time great comic book series'. It spawned follow-up series' in comic form as well as prequels and in 2009 director Zack Snyder brought the story to the big screen, something many had previously thought impossible. In 2019 HBO launched the 9 episode Watchmen TV series, set 34 years after the original story, it was met with critical acclaim winning 11 Emmys. Haydn and John examine the themes of Moore's original masterwork and give their appraisal of the various iterations of Watchmen that followed in its wake.
Nothing ever ends... Except for the Watchmen TV series it seems! How could anyone possibly follow up on the perfect ending of the comic book? If you know, call the creators of this show! Yikes!

In this episode Stacy Osei-Kuffour joins Rhianna and Michael to untangle the labyrinthine world of script and story editing for TV. Who writes what? Where do ideas come from? How do you pitch them? And who gets the credit? Stacy answers all these questions and more as she discusses her contribution to shows such as Hunters, the Emmy award-winning Watchmen, Run and PEN15. Welcome to Wrap Party, the podcast that toasts the excellence of the creatives and craftspeople working behind-the-scenes on some of your favourite films and TV shows.SHOW NOTESWATCHINGHunters (TV series). Al Pacino and Logan Lerman play vengeant Nazi hunters in 70s New York in this stylish, cool and genre-bending thrill ride. Watch on Prime Video.Run (TV series). The writers had to get creative in this thrilling rom-com show exec produced by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, set for the most part on a train, as two ex-lovers go on the, well, run. Buy via Prime Video. The Power (TV series). Currently in pre-production with Amazon Studios. We are hotly anticipating this adaptation of Naomi Alderman's novel. In very Thriller Club fashion, we watched two different movies in preparation for this episode! Yikes. So instead of covering either Underwater or Suspiria (tune in the next two weeks for those), we’re going to talk about what we’ve been up to during the quarantine! I, Ryan, ramble on about what I’ve been watching while KZ offers up some entertaining stories from his time having to work in public during a pandemic. Light on horror, heavy on... talking. It’s a podcast. Films/TV quickly reviewed: Parasite, What We Do in the Shadows (TV), Knives Out, Yojimbo, Joker, Sonic the Hedgehog, Zombieland: Double Tap, Once Upon A Time in Hollywood, Dark Phoenix, the Jumanji sequels, Moby Dick (1956), Moby Dick (1998), Moby Dick (2011), Onward, Coco, Venom, Naked Gun, Outlander (TV), Hannibal (TV), Watchmen (TV), The Last Dance (TV), Dark Side of the Ring (TV). Today on the Toy Power podcast, we get real for a bit as we attempt to break down the state of the collecting world, 18 months since the exit of Toys R Us. It’s a chat mainly based around the suffering of our US friends as in a weird twist of fate, these toys are mostly easily available here in Aus… Whats the role of the retailer and do they even care? Whats the meaning behind an exclusive? Do they have it black? And if not WalMart or Target, where does a collector go? Then it’s onto the Watchmen TV show – and we can’t stop gushing about it. Trent even screams in delight at one particularly gruesome scene. We break down just why this reboots stands alone above all others – are you paying attention ThunderCats Roar? And whats with the egg? Did Trent finally pronounce JJ’s name correctly? And in what looks like the start of a new thing, find out how Frank went with his hunt for the rogue figure in his toy room… Support the show: http://patreon.com/toypowerpodcast See omnystudio.com/policies/listener for privacy information.

Cinema chains in the UK and the US are planning to start opening up again next month, even though Coronavirus cases still remain high in both countries, and in some areas are spiking to dangerous new highs. Emily and Ed go over the economic and moral quandary that theatres find themselves in, particulary AMC and its (quickly reversed) decision to not force customers to wear face masks because they didn't want to get caught in a "political controversy." The brand new Watchmen TV series has been out for a few weeks on HBO now. Who watches the Watchmen? Why,the Watch-men, of course! Joyce and Matt chat about the early episodes and reflect a bit on how the show connects with the graphic novel.
In this episode we dive into what is arguably the greatest graphic novel of all time. Even though there has recently been a Watchmen TV show, our thoughts are centered on the novel (and the movie a little). That said, there are spoilers for the show scattered throughout the episode, so don't listen if you haven't seen the show yet and do not want it spoiled. Additional Spoilers: The Walking Dead 4:47 The Hurt Locker 55:20 Flowers For Algernon 1:00:28 The Sword In The Stone 1:22:22 The Man In The High Castle 1:53:09 The Plot Against America 1:53:22

Check out a new installment of Afronerd Radio's Grindhouse podcast airing this Sunday at 6pm eastern. Your "friendly neighborhood" AFROnerdists will shed light on the following issues: favored guest and noted graphic novelist, David Walker (Naomi, Bitter Root) stops by to discuss his latest project, The Hated and the accompanying Kickstarter campaign; Amazon's Hunters (S1)-executive produced by Jordan Peele (Us, Get Out) premiered this week and we give you our thoughts; DC co-publisher, Dan Didio leaves the company but not without controversy-did he leave of his own volition or was he fired? Westworld S3 trailer hit the internets and we speculate; political scientist, The Root editor and MSNBC contributor, Dr. Jason Johnson got into "Snoop Dog-esque" trouble over his critique of certain Black female supporters (misfits?) of Democratic presidential frontrunner, Sen. Bernie Sanders; Watchmen TV may continue after all; NYC Black Comic Book Festival cofounder and educator, John I. Jennings' first publishing list from the Megascope imprint launches; thoughts about last night's Wilder v Fury fight (maybe Wilder's song choice was a problem). Lastly, for BHM-discussing how Captain Ed Dwight was robbed from being the first African American in the NASA space program. Call LIVE at 646-915-9620.
