WE ARE BACK... Once again, with another edition of our weekly AEW Dynamite Review Show! Joey is officially the Deep Six Wrestling Predictions Champion once again, coming off of our Bound For Glory Prediction Challenge (which you can hear all about in the previous episode of this podcast, but be warned, it is a long one!), and he is joined as always by Pat, as they cover this week's AEW Dynamite, coming live from Boston! All Elite Wrestling is pushing ahead on the road to the 2021 edition of Full Gear, as we have our main event already announced in the form of AEW World Champion defending his AEW World Championship against former ally, Hangman Adam Page! This show continued the build, with a very fun, very insane, and very memorable main event 8-man Tag Team Match, pitting John Silver, Colt Cabana, Evil Uno, and Stu Grayson of the Dark Order against The Elite, made up of Kenny Omega, Adam Cole, and the Young Bucks! As advertised, this was also a big-time Halloween Match, with both teams dressed for the occasion with The Elite dressed as The Ghostbusters with an accompanying theme song (including the line, "I ain't fraid' of no BUDGE"), while Dark Order opted for less cohesion, as Stu Grayson cosplayed as Kratos, John Silver as Bambi, Evil Uno as Hangman Page, and Colt Cabana as Brandon Cutler! Elsewhere on the card, CM Punk had his first match on AEW Dynamite, battling Bobby Fish, Hikaru Shida faced off once again with Serena Deeb, as not only did she look to achieve her 50th win in AEW, but also looked to move forward in the TBS Women's Championship Tournament, Cody Rhodes addressed the fans about his potential heel turn in a very memorable promo segment, MJF and Darby Allin made it clear that they would be battling at the PPV, FTR and the Lucha Bros made their Full Gear Match official, and Sammy Guevara defended the TNT Championship against Ethan Page of the Men of the Year! We also have an in-depth breakdown on the Ring of Honor news at the beginning of the podcast. So, what did Joey and Pat think of AEW Dynamite this week? Listen to the episode and find out! After fleeing Al-Maghrib, the party regroups under cover of night to hide from the Barbarossa search parties. Mystery, tragedy, and paranoia hang in the air as our heroes hatch a plan to summon and trap the Angel of Death himself... Content Warning: Body Horror and General Strong Horror Elements Detailed Description: Due to Nebet and Budge's stellar efforts (and a 21 Survival check!), our heroes manage to regroup in the foothills of the Adrassian Mountains by 8pm. They can still see search parties in the distance as they begin forming their plan to trap Anupaz and question them about what's going on. Panya excuses herself to commune with Ammut, whom she describes to the party as her "people", and convinces her to schedule a meeting with Anupaz for the following day at noon. She explains to the rest of the group that after her husband left for the war she was lonely and afraid, so she went down to the crossroads and made a deal with a supernatural entity who has been helping her ever since. The group is touched by her sincerity and decides to trust her, agreeing to limit themselves to non-damaging spells during the meeting as long as Anupaz doesn't escalate the situation. Hushi then begins copying the Magic Circle spell into their spellbook, a process which requires them them to roll 3 DC 25 Arcana checks. They can lower the DC by expending spell slots, which lower the DC by an amount equal to the spell's level (1st level spells lower DC by 1, 2nd level spells lower it by 2, etc.). Each failed Arcana check results in the loss of one of the three spell scrolls, meaning they can only afford to fail 3 times before they can no longer copy the spell. The rest of the party pitches in to help, expending spell slots to help lower the DC and donating mag dust to give Hushi advantage on the checks. Budge even lends Hushi his hat so they can use the 2nd level spell contained within. It comes down to the wire, but after 6 straight hours of feverish work and huge amounts of help, Hushi is successfully able to copy Magic Circle into their spellbook! The planning continues into the wee hours of the morning. The party decides to sneak onboard the inaugural journey of the Transwestern Railway, where they'll cast one regular Magic Circle for themselves to hide in and one inverted Magic Circle to trap Anupaz inside. Panya briefly suggests blowing up the train to kill as many people as possible and hopefully appease Anupaz, but this idea gains no traction and earns her further suspicion from her fellow party members. They divide the extra spell scrolls between Lu'luh and Nebet so both of them can cast the spell if need be. Meanwhile, Budge uses the map to identify 3 potential spots for them to intercept the train's journey, all of which happened to be near landmarks Budge had marked in his travels. The closest is two hours away, near a "good picnic spot" along a cliffside overlooking the Glass Sea. The second is three hours away, near some "Friendly Rocks", but is also uncomfortably close to the "Big Fuckin' Wasps". The third is four hours away in the sand dunes, which offer ample places to stage an ambush but are threatened by the infamous "Utaram Bull Worm". Since time is short, the party decides to suspend their planning so they can get a Long Rest and be ready for Anupaz the next day. Still shaken by the events of the day, Budge plays a familiar melody on his flute before going to bed. He 's clearly bothered by something, but he decides to do what he's done for decades now and keep his pain to himself. Meanwhile, Hushi has another dream/vision of Herru Hampton's soul being approached by the Angel of Death himself. In the course of a brief conversation, Anupaz reveals that he serves Ammut, whom he refers to as his "mistress". He judges Herru unworthy and before sucking her soul into a pair of jaws that opens up in the belly of his eye-covered torso. As Hushi desperate shouts are drowned out by the howling wind, Herru's soul is dragged into a realm of endless flames. Hushi snaps awake and discusses with Tovo the implications of what they just saw. The pair realizes that Anupaz is likely serving Ammut because of an unspecified deal that he made with her, and that Ammut is also the likely identity of Panya's mysterious "people". While they talk, the sleeping Budge fails a DC 15 Wisdom saving throw, causing his body to undergo a gruesome transformation into the gelatinous form of Lil' Oozie, which begins slithering towards the corpses of Vile Mouth and Vicious Barbarossa. The party jumps into action; throwing hands, firing bullets, and blasting spells. After a short and panicked battle during which Lily is dispelled and Lu'luh is knocked unconscious, our heroes manage to damage the ooze enough for it to slide back into Budge's unconscious form. As Budge comes to, we get a detailed description of what he saw: his village, shattered by the Calamity. The townspeople have been fused into the very stones that make up their village. Budge, his body still unstable from the Calamity's effects, staggers into his home to discover that his eight year-old daughter was among the casualties. His wife still clings to life, her torso extending out of the wall of the house. As Budge desperately tries to find a way to save her, she begs him to end her agony. Through tears, Budge grants her request, ending her pain and her life. The vision ends and Budge flies into a rage. As the rest of the party tries to comfort him, they hear a commotion off in the distance. They turn to see that the noise of their battle has alerted a veritable army of Barbarossa gang members, who now ride hard across the plains, converging on their location. Danger, intrigue, and horror ensue as our heroes jump into action to defend a mysterious stranger from the monstrous creature that menaces her! Content Warning: Body Horror and Child Endangerment Detailed Description: We begin by having everyone offer their version of what they think the show (which was unnamed at the time of recording) should be called. Connie suggests "Gunslingers & Gaybies" (gay babies) and "Hushi & the Halflings", Jasper offers "The Adventures of Rustbucket & Friends", and Jonny proposes "Onuris Budge & the Budgerigars". After the introductions, the session begins as the party sees Unati's mysterious new character on a railway track, firing her obsidian black rifle at a bizarre creature. Its main body is a huge red and black mass of ooze, and it has spawned several ooze-y black and red humanoid figures that call out to Unati's character. Each of these figures is connected to the main body by thin tendrils that stretch along the ground. Despite Budge's light protests, the party decide to help her out and everyone rolls initiative. Unati's character uses her rifle to fire two Eldritch blasts at the creature, hitting it with both despite disadvantage. Her blasts evoke pure death: black and deep purple with blue flames on the edges. As they get within 5 feet of the creature, the space around them seems to warp and bend them strangely, but they slip through anyway and slam into the creature. Unati rolls max damage against the creature, to the delight of everyone present. She then casts Spirit Shroud, summoning forth deathlike flame spirits which begin flitting around her. Rust is immediately attracted to Unati's character, but then realizes the attraction may stem from his mentor, whose memories he carries. Pushing through his confusion, Rust takes cover behind a rock and fires his Peacemaker twice at the creature, only managing to hit once due to the disadvantage imposed by the bizarre warping effect that surrounds it. The creature tries to retaliate by using some kind of psychic power against Unati's character, which she manages to resist. Hushi then pierces the creature with a Mind Spike, using their Chronal Shift so it fails the save. As their spell pierces the creature, Hushi is nearly overwhelmed by a chorus of wails that attempt to make a connection with their mind. Shaken, Hushi also cast Soul Blade, making their sword temporarily magical. The creature tries to retaliate by using its psychic power against Hushi, but they manage to resist its effect. The creature stretches up into the air and slams two gooey tendrils down onto Unati's character, dealing her 40 points of damage and rendering her unconscious. As the party reels in shock at the power of this creature, Nebet stabilizes Unati's character with Spare the Dying, then brings her back up with Healing Word. Budge attempts to make the creature vulnerable with Faerie Fire, but the creature resists the effect. Infuriated, Budge calls upon the spirits he follows, transforming his hands into crocodile jaws as he flies into a Rage and charges at the creature. Unati's character casts a spell called Hunger of the Bone Eater, enveloping the creature's main body in a pair of obsidian black jaws that extend from the ground and close over it, blocking it from view. Squelching, crunching, crackling, and the screams of the damned emit from the mass and echo around the cavern. Rust attempts to shoot the tether connecting one of the humanoid creatures to the main body, but his gun misfires and jams. Rather than un-jam it, he draws his sword and charges towards the creature, but he misses again as he swings down at the tendril. As a bonus action, he casts Sanctuary on Unati's character, surrounding her with a floating mirror that reflects light in the eyes of anyone who tries to attack her. The creature then tries to use its mysterious psychic power on Budge, but he resists as well. People are resisting all over the place! Hushi rolls an Insight check to try and discern the nature of the humanoid figures the creature is manifesting, but can only tell that the figures probably aren't railway workers because some of them are children. Frustrated, Hushi fires a 2nd level Ice Knife into the creature, damaging it and exposing that the tethers are invulnerable as long as the main body survives. Finally, Hushi asks Unati's character her name, which is revealed to be Panya. On the creature's turn, it's immediately damaged by Panya's spell. With the damage piling up, the creature misses Tovo with a tendril but manages to hit Budge. As the tendril slams into Budge, he receives a vision of that fateful day when The Calamity occurred. The sky flashes a series of unnatural colors and textures. Panic is everywhere. Budge even hears people repeating the very same things he's heard the ooze-y humanoid figures say, and he realizes he's seeing all of this from the perspective of a child. As the vision ends, the creature again uses its psychic power on Hushi, and this time Hushi fails the saving throw. Hushi feels an intense sucking sensation as the creature rips memories out of their head. The damage renders Hushi unconscious and they drop all everything they're holding before collapsing to the ground facedown. Thankfully, Nebet, ever the MVP, flies over and revives Hushi with Cure Wounds, returning all of their dropped items in the process. Budge, enraged by the shocking vision the creature gave him, uses Wild Shape to transform into an Atlas Bear and attacks the creature. He clamps his crocodile jaw arms onto the creature's central mass and goes into a crocodilian death roll, completely shredding its body. As Budge rips the creature apart, he sees flashes of memories that this creature has absorbed. Budge realizes that these memories come from a variety of people, and that he can choose to connect with one of them if he wants. He enters the memory of the little girl he saw in his previous vision, and he begins to understand that this memory is the last thing the little girl ever experienced before the creature absorbed her. He calls out to the child, telling her to flee, but she doesn't know how. Budge watches in horror as The Calamity's shockwave hits and everyone is altered in horrific ways. As the people around him die, their spirits emerge from their bodies. Each holds a feather in one hand and a heart in the other. The little girl says that the heart and the feather she's holding seem to weigh the same, and asks if that means she can leave. Unfortunately, she seems rooted to the spot, unable to pass on. Budge grasps her hands and tries to comfort her. As he does this, he sees one man's body undergo a disturbing and elaborate transformation that seems to offer brief glimpses of other worlds, most notably a cold and desolate place that's full of stars. As the transformation stabilizes, Budge realizes that the man has transformed into the very creature that Budge was just fighting. The creature senses Budge and the little girl, and begins slithering towards them. Things begin to click into place as Budge realizes two things: 1. All of this already happened years ago. The Calamity killed this little girl and everyone around her, and their spirits were all absorbed by this creature. 2. Somehow, Budge's consciousness has somehow been transported through time, allowing him to interact with the past. And that means he might be able to change history. Budge decides to do everything he can to try and save this little girl. He calls upon his spiritual connection and succeeds on a DC 18 Insight check to encase the child in a watery shield of magical protection just as the creature begins to ooze its way over Budge's spectral body, enveloping him completely. Budge's consciousness suddenly returns to the present moment. As the party tries to check on him, Budge feels something alien slithering around underneath his skin. Before he can react, he hears a voice inside his head. It's the voice of the little girl! "M-Mister? Where am I? Where's my mom? Mister, where's my momma?" As Budge drops Wild Shape, he groans out, "awwwww, fuck!" To Be Continued in Episode Five If you enjoy this podcast please help us out by leaving a review and sharing it with your fellow adventurers. A tense situation turns deadly on this week's Outlaws & Obelisks! Content Warning: Suicide Detailed Description: We begin by rolling for the races of the couple (Asim is a Genasi and Ghilas is a Rabbitfolk), and the sudden intruders (A Minotaur leading a Grung, a Locathah, an ambiguously hairy man, a Warforged, and a Centaur). The Minotaur is Herru Hampton, a lieutenant of the Barbarossa Gang and one of the people Tovo has been tracking down. The Centaur is a member of the Syphaxian cavalry, a group of mercenaries who were fused to their horses in the Cataclysm and have become the most skilled and feared cavalry in Utaram. Tovo reveals himself and attempts to challenge Herru to a one-on-one duel. Herru recognizes him but refuses the duel, announcing that the Barbarossa Gang have decided Squeaky Gate is a strategically useful position and are officially annexing the town. Tovo continues to try and provoke Herru, who decides a show of force is in order and calls out, "Zala!" to an unseen assailant who casts a psychic spell on Tovo, seriously injuring him. The battle is on! Nebet heals Tovo, who dives into the time displaced chicken coop and starts shooting at Herru, injuring her and blasting the gun right out of her hand. Budge runs toward a nearby shed to find the unseen spellcaster and reveals them with Faerie Fire. It turns out that “Zala” is the Gnoll the party had been searching for! She had been so elusive because the Cataclysm put her permanently under the effects of the Pass Without Trace Spell. Realizing she's been discovered, Zala counterattacks Budge with a spell that surrounds him in darkness, cold, and all manner of unseen slimyness. Hushi casts Mind Spike at Herru and injures her even further, forcing her to call off her troops. It turns out the Barbarossa Gang is in the middle of a massive land grab for two reasons: 1. To put themselves in a position to capitalize on the rebuilding that's taking place throughout the region, as well as the eventual return of international trade to the area, and 2. So they can get revenge on the people who caused the Cataclysm in the first place. That's right: the Barbarossa Brothers claim to know who was behind the Cataclysm. Hushi is stunned by this statement and claims that the Cataclysm happened so long ago that everyone responsible should be dead by now, which confuses everyone else, for whom it's only been a few decades. Hushi begins reading Herru's mind and learns that she was born post-Cataclysm and found a home with the Barbarossa Gang after her rough childhood. She considers the Barbarossa Gang her family, but she also fears their power and ruthlessness. Herru attempts to negotiate, offering assistance from the Barbarossas in exchange for letting her live, but Hushi decides to use Detect Thoughts to pierce deeper into her mind and learn where the Barbarossas were holed up. It turns out their center of power is in the much larger city of Dido, which the Barbarossas are secretly controlling from behind the scenes. Herru, feeling the information being pried from her mind, realizes she's failed her adopted family and decides she's as good as dead anyway. She grabs her shotgun and turns it on herself, ending her life before the Barbarossa Gang can mete out any retribution. The party stands, stunned. Hushi was inside Herru's mind when she died and is now in shock. Tovo agrees to let the rest of the gang members in exchange for no further bloodshed. Meanwhile, Budge realizes that he recognizes Zala, and that they had actually worked together for the Barbarossas on the very same job that led to Budge's current fugitive status. He negotiates her safety in return for all stolen items, including Elkaissa's yellow hat, and Zala heads off into the brushlands. Jidiji, the Leonin mayor of Squeaky Gate, offers the party supplies and information as thanks for their assistance. Turns out this is the first gang trouble Squeaky Gate has had. Budge explains that the Barbarossas had hired him to steal magical artifacts and are clearly trying to build up their power and influence. Jidiji suggests that the party go to Al-Maghrib, aka: Sunset City, for further information in their library. She also mentions that there's a large pocket of magical energy a half day's journey from the town, and the party decides to stop by there along the way to investigate. Tovo and Budge create a magical map with all of Budge's notes from his travels through Utaram. As the party prepares to leave, Hushi buries Herru's body a little ways away from the town and performs a small funeral ritual. Asim, Ghilas, and their daughter Lemta also attend the tiny funeral, wishing Herru a blessing from Asatekh. Ghilas explains that Asatekh is the god of the dead, chaos, and destruction. Hushi is weirded out by this and pays them for the time displaced chicken. Meanwhile, Tovo casts Find Steed and summons a camel, who immediately has an epiphany as it gains sapience. Finally, Elkaissa gives Budge her beloved yellow hat as thanks. As Budge puts the hat on, he realizes it's magical in some unknown way. As the party leaves, Magrin tells them to look up someone named Sidon when they arrive in Al-Maghrib and tell him that Magrin Warren sent them. The episode closes as the party rides off into the sunset towards Sunset City. If you enjoy this podcast please help us out by leaving a review and sharing it with your fellow adventurers.
