Wimbledon is replacing line judges with electronic line-calling, the latest step into the modern age by the oldest Grand Slam tennis tournament. The All England Club announced that technology will be used to give the “out” and “fault” calls at the championships in 2025, eliminating the need for human officials to make them. Wimbledon organizers said the decision to adopt live electronic line-calling was made following extensive testing at the 2024 tournament and “builds on the existing ball-tracking and line-calling technology that has been in place for many years.” “We consider the technology to be sufficiently robust and the time is right to take this important step in seeking maximum accuracy in our officiating,” said Sally Bolton, chief executive of the All England Club. “For the players, it will offer them the same conditions they have played under at a number of other events on tour.” The move makes the French Open the only Grand Slam tournament without some form of electronic line-calling. The Australian Open and U.S. Open already had eliminated line judges and only have chair umpires on court. Line judges at Wimbledon were dressed in famously elegant uniforms and, for traditionalists, were part of the furniture at the All England Club. Bolton said Wimbledon had a responsibility to "balance tradition and innovation." “Line umpires have played a central role in our officiating set-up at the championships for many decades,” she said, “and we recognize their valuable contribution and thank them for their commitment and service.” Line-calling technology has long been used at Wimbledon and other tennis tournaments to call whether serves are in or out. At the U.S. Open, there have been no line judges—and only chair umpires—since 2021, with Hawk-Eye Live electronic line-calling used for all courts. Bolton said the moves have been made to ensure the day of the finals “builds towards the crescendo of the ladies' and gentlemen's singles finals, with our champions being crowned in front of the largest possible worldwide audience.” This article was provided by The Associated Press.

It's a new day, new week, new month, but the same ol' fast and furious, action packed sports talk that you've come to know and love as the latest podcast is forthcoming. On deck: (4:04) With July ushered in, it's time to check in on MLB teams that can be relevant throughout the summer as they make a play for October baseball. I'll unpack the AL & NL wild card races for the first time. How will the Twins, Royals, Red Sox, Astros and Rays fare throughout the final three months of the regular season? Same for the Padres, Cardinals, Mets, Diamondbacks Giants and Pirates? I'll preview some upcoming series leading into the 4th of July holiday and yes, I'll briefly mention Bobby Bonilla Day as baseball fans can laugh at the Mets and serenade today's BB Day! (31:55) NBA free agency has arrived. There aren't many big profile guys on the list, minus Klay Thompson and DeMar DeRozan. Paul George was arguably the number one guy leading the pack, but he signed with the Philadelphia 76ers to a four year deal. Why the cons outweigh the pros when it comes to the former Clipper? I'll address what else could transpire during this opening week of business in the Association and a couple of new coaches (JB Bickerstaff in Detroit and Kenny Atkinson in Cleveland), LeBron James opting out of his contract looking for an extension AND the Lakers drafted his son, Bronny. Are we looking at a three ring circus in LA leading up to training camp in late September? (48:53) The NHL had their draft over the weekend, but there was plenty of wheeling and dealing throughout the rest of the league as the Tampa Bay Lightning made some shrewd moves (sending Mihkail Sergachev to UTAH, Tanner Jeannot to LA, acquiring scorer Jake Guentzel & signing him to a long term deal. There's been a couple of other signings (Sam Reinhart stays in FLA, Patrick Kane with DET) And what about my beloved Islanders? What are they going to do to as they attempt to keep up with the Joneses in the East? (56:27) Wimbledon commences at the All England Club today. I'll preview the men's side with Novak Djokovic's swift return from knee surgery. How will he respond? And can Iga Swiatek capture her first title at Wimbledon as the #1 women's player in the world? (1:02:45) UFC 303's main event had Alex Pereira KO Jiri Prochazka with a head kick in the second round of their light heavyweight bout on Saturday night. Foster spent just one season as the Wildcats’ coach. The move was announced in a brief statement from athletic director Derrick Gragg. The Chicago Tribune and WSCR-AM reported this week that Foster led a toxic culture that prompted several assistant coaches to quit, and that his bullying and verbally abusive behavior prompted a human resources investigation by the university. Northwestern went 10-40 under Foster. Assistant Brian Anderson will take over as interim coach. NCAA – Legal headaches could just be starting at Northwestern, WVU with Fitzgerald The legal headaches could only be starting for ex-Northwestern football coach Pat Fitzgerald and West Virginia’s Bob Huggins. Fitzgerald was fired this week following hazing allegations in the program. He originally was suspended for two weeks before the school changed course. West Virginia considers Huggins to have resigned after a drunken-driving arrest last month. Huggins says he never formally stepped down and wants to keep coaching basketball. Industry experts are puzzled by what happened. Marty Greenberg is an attorney specializing in coaching contracts. He says if Fitzgerald and Huggins fight back, it would be in everyone’s best interests for a quick resolution. NCAAMBB – March Madness expansion discussed by NCAA committee but no deal imminent The NCAA Division I men’s basketball committee discussed possible expansion of March Madness at its meetings this week but said no moves were imminent to increase the field beyond the current 68 teams. Earlier this year, the NCAA Division I board of directors approved recommendations by the DI transformation committee that included allowing one quarter of teams in bigger sports to compete in championship events. That could mean expanding the fields in both men’s and women’s basketball up to 90 teams. There are many in the sport who believe the 68-team field and three weekends of play are ideal. In 2016, the NCAA signed an eight-year extension of its TV deal worth $8.8 billion and running through 2032. That’s after the Justice Department raised antitrust concerns. The agreement is for the PGA Tour, European tour and Public Investment Fund to become partners. A clause in the framework agreement was that neither side would try to poach players from other tours. The tour said Thursday that it believes the clause is lawful. But it says it has removed it because the clause isn’t needed as they work together in negotiating the final deal. No more players are likely to join LIV this season. It's the All-Star break and Patrick and Seth take a look at everyone's favorite (or least hated) star-studded exhibition game. Patrick breaks down the Home Run Derby action and how the betting has grown on the event over the years. Shohei Ohtani continues to leave us speechless but the Los Angeles Angels have started to fade begging the question as to whether they'll be sellers at the trade deadline. If Ohtani leaves what's his most likely landing spot? And despite risk of injury or trade, did Bovada actually settle Ohtani early as the AL MVP winner? And as Wimbledon draws towards its conclusion Pat and Seth look at the tournament gameplay so far and the potential awkwardness for the All England Club if a Russian or Belarussian ultimately wins the major.
It may be quiet around these parts when it comes to sports, but I'll be sure to come across loud and clear with my thoughts, opinions and analysis on what's happening as the latest podcast is here. On deck: (2:44) Us fans are ready for an intriguing 'second half' of a baseball season that has had a lot of surprise teams thrust in the middle of a playoff chase. The next two and a half weeks will be telling as the trade deadline is on August 1st. Which means, what will teams like the Orioles, Rangers, Reds, Marlins and Diamondbacks do to bring reinforcements and make a push for a playoff berth in October. I'll also break down all of the division and wild card races in the AL & NL. Why does Tony Clark want to tweak the pitch clock come postseason time? I'll review my over/under win totals to see where I'm at with my predictions regarding six teams dating back to late March. (31:36) Are the San Antonio Spurs serious? Putting prized draft pick, Victor Wembanyama on the shelf for the rest of the summer league? I must voice my displeasure on that, as well as, Zion Williamson saying that he wants to be out there playing instead of sitting on the sidelines. Why didn't he have that same energy toward the end of the regular season when his team was battling for a play-in spot? (38:13) We're down to the final few days at Wimbledon as we're one match away from an epic men's final between Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic. Will it actually happen? On the women's side, heavily favored Iga Swiatek was upset earlier in the week by Elena Svitolina. Who'll come out of top and take home a title at the All England Club? (41:26) HBO must be salivating at the thought of bringing their camera crews to the New York Jets practice facility next month. Will this be compelling television? Or will this end up being a dud? Golf – Schauffele and Spieth say PGA Tour Commissioner Monahan has to earn back trust PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan is set to return to work next week. Xander Schauffele says there are tough questions for him to answer about the tour’s stunning commercial deal with the Saudis. And he believes Monahan has some trust to earn back from the players because of the secretive nature of the deal with the Saudi Arabia wealth fund behind LIV Golf. Schauffele says Monahan had his trust and now has a lot less of it. Jordan Spieth also said Monahan will have quite a bit of trust issues with players. Scottie Scheffler says he wishes player representatives were kept in the loop. A rather slow sports week isn't going to stop your favorite podcast host to babble about what little is happening in the universe of competition. On deck: (2:27) I share how this is one of the slowest sports periods that I've experienced since I've started the podcast five years ago. (4:54) After my little soliloquy on the current barren landscape, baseball is what's getting us through this early part of the summer. Have the Mets started to turn the corner? In what was their biggest win of the year last night, they've won four in a row and look to sweep the first place Arizona Diamondbacks tonight? What is the most important thing for them to do (win, of course) to keep these good vibes going? I'll also get into other series that have taken place this week (Orioles-Yankees, Cardinals-Marlins, Cubs-Brewers roof debacle) and some series that have some punch this weekend before the All-Star Break (Braves-Rays, Orioles-Twins, Mariners-Astros, Mets-Padres, Angels-Dodgers, to name a few). Plus, a big lift in the bullpen for the Texas Rangers (acquiring reliever Aroldis Chapman from the Royals) and the Yankees will have to look for another reliever themselves as Jimmy Cordero has been suspended for the rest of the year due to violating the domestic violence policy. (26:01) The NBA free agency period has come to a screeching halt as we await where James Harden and Damian Lillard will end up. Grant Williams is part of a sign and trade from Boston to Dallas with San Antonio involved. But the Association is about to unveil a plan to have an in-season tournament, which from the surface, comes across as unclear and confusing. (31:27 ) There isn't much, if anything, going on in the NHL. Training camps in the NFL kick off in less than three weeks, but there's nothing to dissect at the moment. Wimbledon is a few days into its tournament. Not a lot of buzz has come out of the All England Club, unless you're Coco Gauff, who was bounced earlier in the week. Other than that, everything has been chalk as there have been no major upsets or developments out in London. It's a tough day for the Halos, a happy return for a Reds hurler and the men's top seed and women's defending champ prevail at All-England Club. Correspondent Bruce Morton reports.
If it's early July, you know it's warm weather, cookouts and celebrating another holiday as I flex my independence as a producer and host of your favorite little podcast with all of the latest in the world of sports. On deck: (3:03) As of this moment, there is no question that the best team in baseball from top to bottom are the Atlanta Braves. I'll explain in great detail as to why, even over organizations like the Tampa Bay Rays, Los Angeles Dodgers and Houston Astros. I'll get into some of the key series that played out over the weekend (Marlins-Braves, Red Sox-Blue Jays, & Astros-Rangers, to name a few.) and peek at the series over the course of the Independence Day holiday. (28:14) Free agency has begun in the both the NBA & NHL. First up, the Association. Not a lot of drama or intrigue with players changing addresses. In fact, quite a few players have stood pat with the teams they finished with last season (i.e. Kyrie Irving, Russell Westbrook, Draymond Green, Khris Middleton, Brook Lopez, Kyle Kuzma, Austin Reaves) among many others. The two big questions are where does James Harden end up as his departure from Philadelphia is forthcoming? And is there a destination for a one Damian Lillard (i.e. Miami, maybe?)considering his enormous contract and getting their worth for the perennial All-Star from Portland? (42:22) As for what's transpired off the ice, there has been plenty of wheeling and dealing in the NHL, but to me, nothing to write home about. I'll get into what has taken place as of this point. How much I love the few tough guys in the sport (i.e. Milan Lucic, Ryan Reaves & Pat Maroon) getting free agent deals or in Maroon's case a trade? Plus, the Islanders re-up on goaltenders Ilya Sorokin, Semyon Varlamov & Scott Mayfield. Did these signings make them a lot better? (47:53) Wimbledon has begun at the All England Club as the third major tennis tournament of the year has arrived. What will transpire on the women's side? Will Iga Swiatek continue her dominance? Will we have a better rematch between Carlos Alcarez-Novak Djokovic, but this time in a Final? (54:47) The NFL has cracked down on a few players violating the leagues gambling policy. I'll share my thoughts on that. Plus, NFL fans rejoice. Training camps open up throughout the sport in a little over three weeks as I can certainly wait for another NFL season to commence.
