Jannik Sinner bested Carlos Alcaraz in a final between the top two players in men's tennis at the All England Club. Correspondent Gethin Coolbaugh reports.
Julio Rodriguez was voted into the Allstar game by his peers, so why are people in Seattle so mad about it? If fans in other markets were upset he took a spot from one of their favorite players, that makes sense, but who gets mad one of their own players is on the team? Not to mention, his WAR makes him one of the top players in the AL, not just in the outfield and his defense earned him a spot on the team. Does it mean he's the superstar we hope he will be? No, not even close, but both can be true! :30- The Mariners are in New York starting tonight to face the Yankees, so we preview Aaron Judge and his fellow pin-striped teammates. The M's have the pitching advantage, but the bats will need to come through against the Yankees beleaguered pitching staff. :45- What's happening at Wimpleton? The Sinner was saved as Jannik Sinner advanced to the quarterfinals after Gregor Dimitrov went down with injury and a two-set lead. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
JASON VARITEK (Boston Red Sox) joined the show to give us his thoughts on Cal Raleigh's season so far, the difficulties of switch-hitting, commanding a pitching staff and Yankee hate. :30- The Ol' Judge is in the building! - Cal Raleigh will win the home run derby… - Nick Emmanwori will be the talk of camp this year… - Is tennis more boring than ever? :45- We wrap up the show with one last thing! Rain may have dampened the grounds at the All England Club early on Wednesday, but it did little to quell the drama as Wimbledon 2025's Day 3 served up upsets, star performances, and homegrown triumphs. Centre Court was abuzz as Emma Raducanu delivered a commanding performance against 2023 champion Marketa Vondrousova. With aggressive baseline play and composure under pressure, Raducanu sealed a 6-3, 6-3 victory to book her spot in Round 3—reaffirming her form and igniting hopes of a bit of a run on home turf. Next up, the World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka.Joining her in advancing was fellow Brit Cameron Norrie, who battled past 12th seed Frances Tiafoe in four sets, showcasing grit and shot-making under pressure. Meanwhile, young wildcard Oliver Tarvet, though defeated by defending champion Carlos Alcaraz, earned admiration with a spirited showing in front of a supportive home crowd. The day also brought surprises, with fourth seed Jasmine Paolini crashing out at the hands of Kamilla Rakhimova which means that four of the top five women's seeds are out inside three days (!). Another Brit hopeful, Katie Boulter was also edged out in disappointing fashion by Solana Sierra, an Argentinian lucky loser.BABOLATBabolat are an official partner of Wimbledon and their Wimbledon collaboration collection is available to purchase now from babolat.com SOCIALSFollow us on Twitter, Instagram, TikTok and YouTube, plus email the show tennisweeklypod@gmail.com.MERCHPurchase Tennis Weekly Merch through our Etsy store including limited edition designs by Krippa Design where all proceeds go towards the podcast so we can keep doing what we do!REVIEWS***Please take a moment to rate and review the show on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or wherever you get your pods. Wimbledon is replacing line judges with electronic line-calling, the latest step into the modern age by the oldest Grand Slam tennis tournament. The All England Club announced that technology will be used to give the “out” and “fault” calls at the championships in 2025, eliminating the need for human officials to make them. Wimbledon organizers said the decision to adopt live electronic line-calling was made following extensive testing at the 2024 tournament and “builds on the existing ball-tracking and line-calling technology that has been in place for many years.” “We consider the technology to be sufficiently robust and the time is right to take this important step in seeking maximum accuracy in our officiating,” said Sally Bolton, chief executive of the All England Club. “For the players, it will offer them the same conditions they have played under at a number of other events on tour.” The move makes the French Open the only Grand Slam tournament without some form of electronic line-calling. The Australian Open and U.S. Open already had eliminated line judges and only have chair umpires on court. Line judges at Wimbledon were dressed in famously elegant uniforms and, for traditionalists, were part of the furniture at the All England Club. Bolton said Wimbledon had a responsibility to "balance tradition and innovation." “Line umpires have played a central role in our officiating set-up at the championships for many decades,” she said, “and we recognize their valuable contribution and thank them for their commitment and service.” Line-calling technology has long been used at Wimbledon and other tennis tournaments to call whether serves are in or out. At the U.S. Open, there have been no line judges—and only chair umpires—since 2021, with Hawk-Eye Live electronic line-calling used for all courts. Bolton said the moves have been made to ensure the day of the finals “builds towards the crescendo of the ladies' and gentlemen's singles finals, with our champions being crowned in front of the largest possible worldwide audience.” This article was provided by The Associated Press.
