“I take people as a story… I can see their higher self before they can.” – Carlos Salum Carlos grew up under Argentina's military dictatorship—surrounded by uncertainty, but also by entrepreneurs, poets, and principled people who knew how to thrive despite it. That tension didn't crush him. It sharpened his vision—so much so that, by adulthood, traditional paths like law & medicine felt like cages, not callings. So he did what most people won't: He bet on himself. On a handshake, he pitched a partnership to the world's top tennis coach. No credentials. No fancy title. Just conviction. Then he flew to Germany, crashed on a friend's couch, & hustled up a seven-city speaking tour with no internet, no safety net, & no backup plan. Eight months later, the world's biggest sports agency called him “Houdini” as he coached legends like Agassi, Seles, & Sampras. But it was never just about tennis. It was always about helping people live with alignment, intention, and impact. Today, he brings that same fire to business owners. Ready to align with something deeper? Find him at SalumInternational.com. Joseph Campbell said, “The privilege of a lifetime is being who you are.” Carlos helps people remember that.

Souvenirs...
Season 3 of the TennisWorthy Podcast is here, just in time for the Australian swing and welcomes a new host in ITHF President and ESPN commentator Patrick McEnroe. Patrick and Chris Bowers bring two stories from Hall of Famers Hana Mandlíková and Pete Sampras. In reliving two key moments from their careers, Mandlíková and Sampras focus on their mental resilience and tenacity in overcoming challenges. Mandlíková, once seen as a natural rival to Martina Navratilova, became a Czech national hero, winning major titles like the Australian Open and Roland Garros. However, she struggled to break through the dominance of Navratilova and Chris Evert in the mid-80s. After improving her fitness and mentality, Mandlíková triumphed at the 1985 US Open, defeating both Evert and Navratilova, with the unexpected help of a Tina Turner anthem.Sampras, on the other hand, learned a crucial lesson about perseverance after his loss to Stefan Edberg in the 1992 US Open final. This experience drove him to dedicate himself fully to the sport, which eventually led to his success, including his 1996 US Open victory. He shares how he battled both illness and subpar play to outlast Alex Corretja in four hours and nine minutes in the quarterfinal.Stay tuned later in January as Patrick brings listeners more stories from the Australian Open. by Ed Shanaphy There's always that guy. The guy that is on the sidelines of every tournament, from a WTA qualifier to an ATP Masters to a Grand Slam. The guy who amazes onlookers through his building of a network. The guy who continues to work, even after retirement and sleeps in the back of a Suburban on the way to the next event. The guy who finally creates such volumes of great work, it brings him to the top of his profession from roots deep in the industry. The guy that becomes a legend and works with legends. On the tennis tour, that guy is Gary Kitchell. Kitchell, or Kitch as he is called by his hundreds - if not thousands - of colleagues and friends, is known around the world as one of the leading physiotherapists who graced tournament tennis courts across the globe. From the hallowed lawn of Centre Court at Wimbledon and the hard cement of Louis Armstrong Court at the US Open to the back courts at the 1990s Volvo ATP Tour stop in New Haven, Kitchell has worked with some of the greatest tennis players of all time. From the era of Borg and McEnroe, to the following upstarts Sampras and Agassi, to Federer and through to today's Tommy Paul, Reilly Opelka and Maria Sakkari, Kitch has treated injuries, reduced stress on the body and helped strength train numerous number one players to new heights. Gary loves tennis. It's always been a part of his life. His early days saw him teaching the indoor season in his native New Jersey. Soon after, he followed the sun as most instructors do and playing in semi-professional tournaments and was noticed at a small club in Vero Beach, Sea Oaks, at which he started his road along the highways and byways of the professional tours. His views of the professional tennis tours are from an interesting objective - a viewpoint from outside the employ of either the men's or women's tour but from within the fires that comprise the professional game and the travel demanded of today's tennis stars. He sees the challenges that the professional tour faces today as the Davis Cup limps along while the Laver Cup becomes a global phenomenon. He also sees the difficulty private members clubs may have using the professional game as a catalyst to new members as the tour lengthens its season and the tournaments are diluted by so much television and streamed coverage. An understanding of the professional game helps Gary to see where tennis may be headed on the amateur level at tennis and country clubs across the country. A commitment to building a community and social network at any club needs to be a priority to continue the sport's growth as it faces challenges from pickleball and padel. As a member of several private members clubs, Gary has some sage advice for club managers and directors in the club management arena. Join Gary on the BeyondTheBaselines.com podcast.

Barry STORMS out of the podcast because he doesn't want to hear about the difference between "literally" and "hyperbole". But if you can't handle the heat, get out of the podcast studio! Compared to the 1968 Democratic National Convention, 2024 came and went without a hitch! Regardless, Zach was out of town because he hates traffic! A FED rate cut in September seems like a foregone conclusion at this point, so it can only have a negative impact on mortgage rates if they don't follow through. The US Open starts today and Zach will be watching his favorites: Djokovic and Alcaraz (sorry Americans, we haven't been at the top of global tennis since the days of Sampras and Agassi) As always, FREE 1 on 1 consultations available at: https://townstone.com/consultation-request/

Alexandra Stevenson brings a fun program with her co-host and coach Hugues Laverdière and Eliot Teltscher, formerly 6 in the world in 1983. She calls it "Coaches Corner" - something she plans to do during the Australian Open with Ougi and other coaches. Alexandra pointedly says the pundits need to quit comparing Coco Gauff to Serena Williams. Alexandra says they compare Coco to Serena because she is black. So. She says - stop doing that - compare Coco to herself. Eliot says she plays more like Sanchez Vicario and Sabatini. Ougi agrees with Alexandra on skin color. The trio move on and take on Nick Kyrgios and his comment that the serve and volley players in generation of Sampras, Edberg, Becker, Rafter - could not play against the players of today. Alexandra says "No." Sampras, Edberg, Becker, Rafter - would "eat them for lunch" today. Alexandra talks about the amazing technique - including serve and volley - of an older John McEnroe - and what she saw when she hit with him in October in Malibu, California. They continue to discuss the different players in the Australian Open and their picks for the men's and women's draws. Alexandra talks about Naomi Osaka and her return - and how her team is setting her up for the next five years. She has brought in a prima ballerina to get her core back and her deep knee bends - and she is back with former coach Wim Fissette. Alexandra says Osaka will bring it against Coco Gauff eventually - if not this year.

This week Candy Reid interviews legendary tennis coach Rick Macci in a podcast special. Headlines are...RICK MACCI ON COACHING KIDS - ‘It's all the other things that stick with the kids that help them become a better doctor or lawyer, or treat their kids better or you know, I help kids get better grades or get off drugs or treat people better. To me I don't just change strokes, I change lives and that's the best feeling in the world'.RICK MACCI ON WORKING WITH PARENTS - ‘It's not only about teaching kids, I teach the parents and that's the art of coaching. Think about it, they eventually start telling me what to do, how crazy is that? But I tell people I should be in the Hall of Fame just for dealing with Richard Williams for four years! You have to have a certain personality just dealing with the cast of characters, Jim Pierce, Stefano Capriati, Richard Williams, keeping your hands around that, that's the tough thing'.RICK MACCI ON SERENA WILLIAMS - ‘When she was ten, Serena wasn't that good. I had ten thousand parents look at that video and say that their kid was better then that, but they didn't see what was under the hood. There were arms, legs and head all over the place, but when I said to play competitive points, the whole landscape changed, there was a rage. You don't judge the book by the cover. It's what I saw under the hood which was the wildcard and that's why she's going to be the greatest of all time'.RICK MACCI ON ANDY RODDICK - ‘His thirst for competition was like no other. The guy was so competitive, the wiring to compete, which is the wildcard really to handle the pressure, his competitive thirst, he was a mosquito, he just wouldn't leave you alone. He was never going to be a Sampras or a Chang, but I think he over-achieved and people didn't appreciate him as much until we haven't really had another male American Grand Slam Champion since'.RICK MACCI ON HIS COACHING PHILOSOPHY - ‘I tell people I've been wrong a lot and that's why I'm right more than most people. There's motivational signs all over the Rick Macci tennis centre like 'Winners find a way, losers find excuses' and that's the power of one word, one sentence or one moment in time, that maybe can influence a child's life. It's not where you start, it's where you finish and if you love what you do and you have passion, that will keep pushing you forward'.

This week Zach and Sloane are joined by fan favorite and all-around supreme beauty Hannah Brown to discuss the problematic 2001 rom-com: The Wedding Planner. Hannah is currently planning her own wedding and the trio discuss her upcoming nuptials and whether or not she'd wear the hideous gown they stuck on poor Bridgette Wilson in this film. Federer vs Nadal... Serena vs Venus... Sampras vs Agassi? Who has the greatest rivalry in tennis and what future rivalries will keep people glued to the TV? Enjoy
LARS CHRISTENSEN ON THE IMPORTANCE OF STATISTICS - ‘I've been doing it from the very beginning, even when he was ten and in the beginning it was about how many unforced errors, how many forced and winners he would do in a match and specifically looking at forehands and backhands and now getting older it's more about serve and return and serve plus one and return plus one, so it's getting more specific but I've kept the statistics always and I always compare during the year'.ROB MORGAN ON GOAL-SETTING - 'The first thing I always do with a player is sit down and work out what's the goal, what's the vision, what does it look like and where do we want to be by the end of the year, so I think sharing a vision is a massive part of coaching. Painting a picture regularly to a player is vital'.ALEX MOLCAN ON LEARNING FROM WATCHING NOVAK DJOKOVIC - ‘Playing against Djokovic showed me it's not about playing crazy fast or trying to be extremely aggressive, it's about the head and you know it looks like Djokovic is playing chess. It was a really incredible experience, I learned a lot from it, I saw how maybe I can play, not exactly, but some moves, how he's thinking, I was re-watching this match a lot and yes, the experience was amazing, it was a good school for me'.SERGIY STAKHOVSKY ON THE WAR IN UKRAINE AND EXPERIENCING OTHER PARTS OF EUROPE - ‘I'm alive, the family is safe, they are in Budapest, they are warm and fed, they go to school, so I think everything is good with them. We all hope we are ok, but unfortunately we don't know that, it's unprecedented times, it's a war, so everybody is trying to live through it to the standards they can. Coming here to Turin after Kyiv has been hit multiple times, coming to a city where it's quiet and peaceful and people are having fun on the tennis court and cheering for tennis, it's different'.ROGER FEDERER ON SAYING GOODBYE TO COMPETITIVE TENNIS - ‘I've definitely given I feel like everything and more to my career than what I could have done. I got to enjoy and learn what hard work and dedication means, so for me, I don't know how much more I could have given, could have tried, I tried I feel a lot of different things, but I feel I'm old enough now to call it a day and I feel really good about it.PLUS MCENROE, BORG, SAMPRAS, AGASSI, HEWITT AND MANY MORE PICK OUT THE FAVOURITE MOMENTS FROM THEIR CAREERS-Show presented by Seb Lauzier-Interviews by Jill Craybas and Chris Bowers-Features by ATP Uncovered

BRANDON NAKASHIMA ON WINNING THE NEXTGEN ATP FINALS - ‘I'm super-happy right now, it was a great feeling all week, it feels amazing, being an American, being able to play here in Milan it's the best feeling in the world and I'm happy to be able to take it back to the US'.EDUARDO INFANTINO ON COACHING BRANDON NAKASHIMA - ‘We're going step-by-step at this moment and he will start to be ready, maybe in the second part of next year. He's still 21 so for sure his best moments will be in two years time. His game needs to be better because he needs to be more aggressive, have more options to be not predictable in his game and my vision is the same vision that Sampras had, don't be predictable'.JIRI LEHECKA ON HIS PROGRESSION - 'This year has been all about experience for me because it was my for year in the top 100 and being able to compete against the best players in the world. Super-happy that I had a chance to compete in all four Grand Slams, to be able to play some very good matches on the ATP Tour and of course the Challenger Tour was also part of my journey this year'.MICHAL NAVRATIL ON WORKING WITH JIRI LEHECKA - ‘For me the first priority is the heart as Kobe Bryant said. I saw the power, the stamina and of course as a nice person, because he was always the guy who came and was respectful and said hello and even if you are giving him some tips, he was always listening'.JAMES TROTMAN ON WORKING WITH JACK DRAPER FROM A YOUNG AGE - ‘He was feisty on court, desperate to win and sometimes that would cloud his judgement, but his competitive instinct and desire to find a way through a match was incredibly impressive. He's had a lot of injury, one year six tournaments, the next twelve, so the biggest thing we've monitored is his workloads and making sure we're being smart in how we trained hi and the goal was as simple as playing twenty-five tournaments the following year'.DOMINIC STRICKER ON PRACTICING WITH ROGER FEDERER - ‘I've learned a lot talking to Roger was very special and I've practiced with him so many times now and he told me some tips like to work on my serve, that was something he told me many times and now I'd say that my serve is pretty good'. BENJAMIN EBRAHIMZADEH ON DEVELOPING THE PLAYER FIRST - ‘I think as a coach you need to understand the person first and you need to understand how to talk to them, how to approach them, what is their behind their story, because their story always comes out in the pressure moments and then you need to understand what their ideal game could look like and then you need to bring these two aspects together, this is what matters the most'.LORENZO MUSETTI ON PLAYING ON HOME SOIL - ‘I have a lot of friends and a small group, six friends who grew up together and we still live together and they are my first fans after my family and we started like a company when we were like eight or nine and we shared a lot of great memories, vacations and holidays together and they are my support for everyday, even in the bad days'.MATTEO ARNALDI ON PLAYING IN BIG VENUES AND EXPERIENCING THE TOUR - ‘I played in Rome, my first Masters 1000 and it was so cool and I think it was the best moment of my year and afterwards I played Wimbledon and then in New York I almost got into the main draw and I think I learned to play on every surface and that was the main thing for this year'.FRANCESCO PASSARO INTERVIEW - ‘We are lucky because we have a lot of tournaments in Italy, we have a chance to play every week in Italy and I think the boom in the amount of Italian players has been down to this I think, so I am very grateful to the Italian Federation'.MOSE NAVARRA ON HIS ROLE DEVELOPING THE ITALIN OVER 18 PLAYERS - 'The players have everything that they need and each one of us coaches has between two to three players that we look after, plus the structure is also following other guys who are below. The Federation has been following these players since the ages of twelve, thirteen, so it's kind of a step-by-step and we look at the ways they are developing as a person a well as a player'.ROSS HUTCHINS ON THE IMPORTANCE OF THE NEXT GEN EVENT AND HOW IT FITS INTO THE BIGGER PICTURE - 'The whole of the tennis world is always asking about the NextGen and when they are asking about what innovations you're doing next year in February or March and this could be Grand Slams, Masters 1000s, media, key sponsors, they are all asking about what we're going to do and who are the next superstars that are going to play, so I think that it has a position in the game is very exciting'.- Podcast hosted by Seb Lauzier- Interviews by Jill Craybas

With Roland Garros currently on, it's great timing to have the youngest ever Roland Garros champ in the open era on the show, Michael Chang. I initially saw Michael at the IMG Future Stars event in Greece and asked him to come on the show, it's taken a few weeks but it happened!! We chatted about the famous match with Ivan Lendl in the 4th round where Micael cramped, hit under arm serve and was about to retire in the 5th and more. He talks about junior tennis, playing Sampras from 8 years old and offers advice for tennis parents.I hope you enjoy the episodes.Fabio
Jill Craybas interviews Paul Annocone who worked with Pete Sampras, Roger Federer and Tim Henman and is now working alongside coach David Nainkin to help young American, Taylor Fritz
"It's fun to be a part of it if you're a part of the team when they break through or when they change something and you see the benefit right away." A new year means New Year's resolutions and there's arguably no one more in demand this time of the year than a fitness trainer. This week brings in strength coach Gunnar Peterson to talk all things fitness, health and nutrition, with a touch of celebrity status mixed in. Though he loathes being dubbed a "celebrity trainer", he has worked with plenty of big names including Pete Sampras, Matthew McConaughey, Sylvester Stallone, Dwayne Johnson, Hugh Jackman and the Kardashians (he's even appeared on "Revenge Body with Khloe Kardashian").
