On our first episode of the 2025, we chat about what went down in Weatherfield between the 30th December and the 3rd January (Episodes #11,454 - 11,460). Swarla fans may not have got their Christmas Day pizza fest, but there was plenty of the pair on our screens this week to enjoy, including an impromptu declaration of love from Carla as the bells tolled midnight on New Year's Eve - but are her feelings reciprocated? Speaking of the Swains, Betsy's getting all loved up with Mason this week, but when he finds evidence that could get his brothers sent down for murder, he suddenly finds himself with a massive target on his back... Also this week, Evelyn gets fast tracked to uni, David declares war on Kit, and Tracy's determined to bring Cassie down. Another slow news week this week, so after Street Talk, we just round things off with a bit of feedback before finishing. Street Talk - 00:19:50 Feedback - 02:31:15

This is The DX Mentor podcast. I hope to help those hams trying to move up the DXCC ladder as well as those that at on the DXCC Honor Roll. As fast as technology is moving, no one can keep up on it all. I am here to help. #DX #Hamradio The W8S DXpedition to Swains took place October 4th to the 17th, 2023. The 10 operators made almost 90,000 QSOs on 160 – 6 meters on CW, SSB, RTTY, and FT8. Our guests today are Adrian, KO8SCA, Johannes, PA5X, and Joe, W8GEX. This past weekend, the W8S DXpedition was recognized as the 2023 SWODXA DXpedition of the Year! At that time of this recording, we did not know that this group would be the DXpedition of the Year. "From October 4, 2023 until October 17, 2023 an international team of 10 operators will be active from Swains Island as W8S. QRV on all HF bands in CW, SSB, FT8 and RTTY with 6 stations from 2 separated camps." Introductions W8GEX – Joe went to Swains in 2012. He is the co-host. I think this will be a great conversation. RSGB GB2RS News Bulletin for 5th November 2023

GB2RS News Sunday the 5th of November 2023 The news headlines: • Exam funding for youngsters • Tonight@8 webinar • RSGB affiliated club Course and Exam Finder map The Radio Communications Foundation, or RCF, is a small charity that seeks to promote radio engineering and amateur radio. Last year, several teachers identified the cost of Foundation exams as a barrier for some young people. The RCF Trustees considered how they might help. Funding exams for every youngster was seen to be unaffordable, and unnecessary, in many cases. As a start, and to help those with the greatest need, the Trustees have agreed to fund 60 Foundation exams each year. The funding will be available to anyone who is under the age of 21, in full-time education and needs help with the exam fee. Fifteen exams will be funded every three months. The first batch of 15 exams will be funded in January 2024. If any of the allocated funds are not used, they will be rolled over to the next quarter. No money will change hands as the RCF Trustees will simply make the bookings and pay the RSGB. In time, there will be a simple online application form. In the meantime, anyone seeking funding should send their details to rcfsecretary@commsfoundation.org with a supporting statement from a parent or guardian about why they would benefit from an RCF-funded exam. Details of their interest in amateur radio, and how they have trained, or are training, for the Foundation exam will also help the Trustees make their decisions. If the scheme proves to be successful, and amateurs continue to donate to the RCF, there may be scope for increasing the number of exams funded each year. Further details about the RCF, and how to donate, can be found at commsfoundation.org Don't forget to be part of the RSGB's Tonight@8 webinar tomorrow, Monday the 6th of November. Colin Summers, MM0OPX will give an entry-level talk aimed at newcomers to amateur radio. He will touch on antennas generally but will focus on the end-fed half-wave antenna including details of construction, transformers and performance. Find out more at rsgb.org/webinars The RSGB-affiliated club Course and Exam Finder map has been relaunched this week. All affiliated clubs were invited by email to submit information about the courses and exams that they run. The replies that were received are now on the RSGB website. If you use the search function and it doesn't show any results, you will need to widen your search area. If your club provides training or holds exams and it isn't shown on the map, please go to rsgb.org/examupdate and complete the form. If you need any help, you can email exams@rsgb.org.uk  Additional information will be uploaded each week, so please submit any changes before 3 p.m. on Fridays. The RSGB is delighted to welcome Elaine Richards, G4LFM as the new volunteer RSGB Archivist. Elaine is a former RadCom Managing Editor and was keen to continue to oversee the RSGB archives when she retired from her RadCom role last year. If you would like more information about an old amateur radio photo or document or want to check something in the RSGB archives, you can contact Elaine via archivist@rsgb.org.uk Thank you to everyone who bought raffle tickets at the RSGB Convention last month to raise money for the DXpedition Fund. The Fund has already made donations to expeditions such as Bouvet, Swains, Rockall and Tuvalu this year. If you're planning a DXpedition to a rare destination and would like to apply, go to the RSGB website and search for ‘DXpedition Fund'. Using RTTY only on the 80 to 10m bands, where contests are permitted, the exchange is signal report and serial number. On Sunday the 12th, the UK Microwave Group Low Band Contest runs from 1000 to 1400UTC. Using all modes on 1.3 to 3.4GHz frequencies, the exchange is signal report, serial number and locator. Now the radio propagation report, compiled by G0KYA, G3YLA, and G4BAO on Thursday the 2nd of November 2023 The last two weeks have not been too bad for HF propagation, but not particularly good either. The solar flux index hit lows of 119 on the 22nd of October and 121 on the 24th, but subsequently recovered and stood at 159 on Thursday the 2nd of November. This at least allayed the fears of some amateurs that Solar Cycle 25 was over! But, as the solar flux index rose, geomagnetic conditions became slightly unsettled. The maximum Kp index was 4.67 on the 29th of October but has subsequently recovered to between 1 and 3. This didn't affect HF too much with the daylight maximum useable frequency over 3,000km remaining steadfastly over 28MHz all week, even hitting 43MHz on Thursday the 2nd. As a result, the bands have been humming with lots of DX being worked. Phil, GU0SUP reports working Jan, E51JAN on the North Cook Islands on 12m FT8 Fox and Hound mode at around 1630UTC. He said that, as it was almost dark, he didn't expect to hear anything, but had a good copy on him at 190 degrees, so gave him a call. He came straight back. Phil said that this was a big surprise, and he is not sure how it worked. It was quite a skewed path, with pretty much no copy on the real headings, short or long path. He also worked YJ0TT Vanuatu on 10m at 0843UTC that morning, and later at 1741UTC on 20m FT8 Fox and Hound mode. As Phil said: “Two new DXCCs in one day!” So, the moral of the story is to keep on trying – you never know what you will work! Next week NOAA predicts that the solar flux index will decline slightly to the 130s. A bigger problem is a massive coronal hole, which is rotating into an Earth-facing position. This could cause the Kp index to rise, possibly on Sunday the 5th or Monday the 6th.  NOAA also predicts a geomagnetic disturbance on November 9th when the Kp index could rise to four. Otherwise, it suggests fairly settled conditions and a general Kp index of two. As always, keep an eye on solarham.net for up-to-date information. And now the VHF and up propagation news The current spell of unsettled weather with areas of low pressure, strong winds and rain or showers will probably remain over the coming week to the 12th of November. This again suggests that Tropo will not be a feature of VHF/UHF operating and perhaps there are just a few weak options for rain scatter to lift the mood.  Since comments last week about out-of-season Sporadic-E propagation, we are still getting weak Sporadic-E signals on the graph plots on propquest.co.uk which peaked at 5.35MHz at Dourbes on Wednesday the 1st of November, at 1700UTC. This may have been enough to produce paths on 6m band data modes. Favoured times of day for these chance events are typically around 10 a.m. or 5 p.m. Meteor scatter prospects are still good since the decaying Orionids are probably lingering up until the 7th, and we approach the peak of the Taurids around the 12th of November. The week after, we'll be looking forward to the November Leonids. So if you've not tried meteor scatter yet, this may be a good time to read up on modes, frequencies and operating techniques. Lastly, a brief mention of aurora, which is always possible given a decent coronal hole event like last week. So keep a check on the Kp index for larger values above, say, 5. For EME operators, Moon declination is at maximum this weekend, meaning long Moon windows and high Moon elevation. Path losses are at their highest over the period due to apogee on Tuesday the 6th and 144MHz sky noise is low all week. And that's all from the propagation team this week.

GB2RS News Sunday the 15th of October 2023 The news headlines: • RSGB Construction Competition • New chair of the RSGB's Exams and Syllabus Group • RSGB 2023 Convention The RSGB recognises the importance of construction as a key element of amateur radio, whether that is using traditional construction skills or is a software or systems engineering project. The Society has launched its 2024 Construction Competition and the deadline for entries is the 1st of March 2024. To enable members across the country, and even the world, to enter, entries will be judged over the internet rather than in person. This year a new category called ‘Antennas' has been introduced so there are five categories you can enter: Beginners; Construction Excellence; Innovation; Software and Systems; and Antennas. Special recognition will be given to entries submitted by radio amateurs under the age of 24, and to those who have just gained their Foundation licence. A cash prize will be awarded for the winner of each section, with a bonus for the overall winner, who will also be declared the winner of the Pat Hawker G3VA Award. You can find out more, including how to enter, on the RSGB website at rsgb.org/construction-competition The RSGB is delighted to welcome Andrew Lenton, G8UUG as the new Chair of the Exams and Syllabus Review Group. The Society would also like to thank Donard de Cogan, M0KRK for his hard work and dedication, including chairing the Group for the past three years. You can contact Andrew via esrg.chair@rsgb.org.uk The RSGB 2023 Convention takes place over both days this weekend. There is a fantastic range of presentations on a variety of amateur radio topics. If you haven't already booked, you can buy day tickets on the door or join the Livestream at any time over the weekend. The Livestream contains 12 of the Convention presentations as well as exclusive interviews and additional content. We are asking radio amateurs to register for the Convention Livestream this year. Whether you are there in person, or joining radio amateurs from across the world online, make sure you are part of this major annual event. For more information about the full programme of presentations go to rsgb.org/convention and to register for the Livestream head over to rsgb.org/livestream As we get closer to the ITU World Radio Conference, WRC-23, which starts next month, the future of amateur radio, particularly the 23cm band, is of key importance. The ITU News Magazine has a feature article by IARU President Tim Ellam, VE6SH regarding amateur activity in the 23cm band. This is the topic of a challenging agenda item at the Conference which calls for measures that protect primary radio-navigation services such as Glonass and Galileo from amateur terrestrial and satellite usage. You can read the article by visiting tinyurl.com/TimVE6SH In related news, the IARU also reports that the last formal preparatory meeting ahead of the WRC on this topic was difficult and could not achieve a consensus on measures such as power and bandwidth limits, or frequency restrictions. The IARU supports further efforts and will continue to try to find a solution regarding suitable recommendations, whilst opposing the unwarranted statutory imposition of such. You can read the IARU's post on this subject via tinyurl.com/ITUR23cm  Also, you can hear the latest updates at the RSGB Convention on Sunday, in a talk by IARU expert and RSGB Microwave Manager Barry Lewis, G4SJH.  Jamboree On The Air, or JOTA, is an annual event in which Scouts and Guides all over the world communicate with each other via amateur radio. JOTA 2023 will run from Friday the 20th to Sunday the 22nd of October. You can find out more at jotajoti.info And now for details of rallies and events Dartmoor Autumn Radio Rally is taking place today, Sunday the 15th of October. On Sunday the 22nd of October, the 50MHz Affiliated Societies Contest runs from 0900 to 1300UTC. Using all modes on the 6m band, the exchange is signal report, serial number and locator. The Worked All Germany Contest starts at 1500UTC on Saturday the 21st of October and ends at 1500UTC on Sunday the 22nd of October. Using CW and SSB on the 80 to 10m bands, where contests are permitted, the exchange is signal report and serial number. German stations also send their DOK reference. Now the radio propagation report, compiled by G0KYA, G3YLA, and G4BAO on Thursday the 12th of October 2023 We had a period of low geomagnetic disturbance last week, which allowed the upper HF bands to shine. There were lots of reports of DX being worked on the 10m band as the Kp Index sat mainly in the ones and twos, with a maximum of Kp 3.33 for one three-hour period on the 9th. The Solar Flux Index, or SFI, also remained in the 150s and 160s, hitting a maximum of 166 on the 9th. All in all, these were very good conditions for high-band DXing, especially at this optimum time in the calendar. As promised last week, let's take a look at HF paths from the UK to the W8S Swains Island DXpedition in the South Pacific. The good news is that operations are in full swing and are being spotted daily on the DX Cluster. At a distance of approximately 9,500 miles from the UK on the short-path, and 15,300 miles on the long-path, it's quite a distance for signals to traverse. The short-path beam heading you need to select is a polar path at 350 degrees, and for long-path 169 degrees. The best openings to Swains from the UK start on the 20m band from about 0630UTC. As the morning progresses, move up in frequency until you get to the 10m band around 1000 to 1100UTC. This path should remain open until 1500 or 1600UTC, at which point you can drop down to the 12, 15 or 17m bands. Long-path openings may be a lot weaker, with a short opening on the 15m band from 0600 to 0800UTC. Then move to the 12 or 10m bands from 0700 to 0900UTC. There may also be a long-path evening opening from 1800 to 2000UTC on the 17 and 10m bands. The above predictions are for SSB and CW. You may find FT8 openings extend these times a little. For more details, and to compute your own predictions, see VOACAP.com or Proppy at soundbytes.asia/proppy This weekend, ending today the 15th, may see some geomagnetic disturbances due in part to a coronal hole. But, as long as we don't get any coronal mass ejections, this should settle after the weekend.  The Solar Flux Index is predicted to remain in the 150s with a maximum Kp index of two. If this turns out to be true, we should have a good week of DX hunting to come. And now the VHF and up propagation news The coming period of weather offers many changes, and it looks as though we have said goodbye to the warm air, with low pressure controlling events.   Just a gentle reminder to keep an eye on your antennas as this time of year can produce surprisingly rapid developments of deep low-pressure systems with associated strong winds.  Early next week, a temporary high returns to give you a chance to give those antenna supports and guys a once-over while winds are light, and leave the potential Tropo until the evenings and overnight. Incidentally, this new high is essentially a cold air high, so may not be as productive as the recent Tropo of the week just ending. The new high will probably hang around until midweek when it should migrate north to allow an easterly wind across the south. This will probably bring some showery rain along the east coast. It's possible that we may have some rain scatter from these showers. Meteor scatter is always good in October, with high random meteor rates and a number of small showers. Most notable of these is the Orionids Meteor Shower which peaks on the 22nd of October and is active until the 7th of November with an average zenithal hourly rate of around 20. Of course, aurora is also worth keeping in mind if you get any spare time! For EME operators, Moon declination is negative and falling all week, reaching minimum on Friday the 20th with corresponding shortening Moon windows. As we are now past apogee, path losses will continue to fall.  144MHz sky noise starts very high with the annular eclipse on Saturday the 14th. The following week sees it moderate, increasing to a high of over 2000 Kelvin on Thursday. And that's all from the propagation team this week.

We finally get to sit and chat with Dr. Carol Swain about what to expect in a post - affirmative action world. A woman who escaped abject poverty to become a holder of 5 degrees is probably someone who knows a thing or two about success and how to achieve it. We discuss the lies behind diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), the supreme court decision and why those who dwell on race the most end up being the real racists.  Be on the lookout for her new book!Visit Dr. Swains site:Carol Swain Bio - https://bethepeoplenews.com/about/Be the People Website - https://bethepeoplenews.com/Support the showPlease Rate & Comment!Hosts: Brandon and Daren SmithWebsite: www.blackandblurred.comPatreon: www.patreon.com/blackandblurredYouTube: Black and Blurred PodcastIG: @BlackandBlurredPodcastTwitter: @Blurred_Podcast

The Local's talk show, all about Cape May and the area was at Swain's Hardware, (likely the oldest retail store in Cape May) on August 25th and we chatted with Rick Swain about the history of the store along with some other good tidbits. We also touched on the rental season at the Jersey Shore for September and October, why are some of our plants not blooming this summer, the annual salary of a N.J. lifeguard, the Monomoy life-saving boat on display at the Cape May State Park at Cape May Point, how did the term 'Shoobies' come about, the Nathaniel Foster House being restored, jury trials to resume in September and the new Rio Grande Park slated for an October opening and a little bit more, always interesting.

Sean Swains September 9th Prison Strike statement

The Final Straw Radio

Prison officials recently placed Siddique Abdullah Hasan, a death row prisoner held at Ohio's supermax, in segregation. Siddique was framed as a leader of the Lucasville prison uprising in 1993 and has been a vocal supporter of the September 9th national prisoner work stoppage. His segregation should really come as no surprise as prison (mis)managers have long waged a brutal war on truth and on the captives who tell it. What is disturbing and highly instructive is that Siddique's segregation didn't originate with the prison warden, but with the FBI. Yeah. The FBI. This further proves something I suspected in 2012 when prison officials segregated me and tortured me for having an “ideology.” While I was being tortured at a state prison, the FBI was on site. In fact, the FBI assisted by providing the Ohio prison system with training manuals on how to break me. Know where the training manuals were developed? The CIA. The torture tactics that the FBI shared with state prison officials came straight out of the CIA's Counterintelligence and Interrogation Manual. So, let's connect some dots… The FBI and CIA have essentially merged, so all of the dirty, nasty terror that the U.S. used to unleash exclusively overseas can now be employed right here at home. And the meta-data -collecting snoops reading your emails who perfected torture and state terror have state prison wardens on speed dial, giving unthinkable orders to those who run the largest, most sprawling human bondage system in all of human history. This is no conspiracy theory, folks. Conspiracies are kept secret. The architects of this terror state are developing this ultimate control system right in front of your eyes. These enemies of human freedom are not saying, “We don't know what you're talking about,”—they're saying, “We have Apache attack helicopters, so what are you going to do about it?” They want you to know what they're doing. They want you paralyzed with fear. That makes you predictable. So, look. I've been invited to say a few words about why you should support the national prison work stoppage on September 9th. In doing that, I'm not going to rattle off facts and figures about how the criminal justice and corrections systems target racial minorities or how these systems serve to tip the scales in favor of social and political conservatism by neutralizing those who benefit most from radical change. I'm not going to explain how the indiscriminate police shootings of black people is just an outgrowth of the larger program. I'm going to assume that you've been awake and that you've already got a grasp of the painfully obvious. We can also forgo moral arguments about lofty principles like equality and fairness and human compassion. Others can make those arguments much better than I can. Instead, I'm going to try to explain why your own naked self-interests are served in supporting this September 9th work stoppage. Let's talk about you. As Edward Snowden revealed, somewhere in a dark government office, a national security creep is thumbing through your emails, listening to your phone calls, scrutinizing your search histories—he's sniffing through your intellectual underwear. Do you know where this mass-surveillance plan was perfected? My calls have been monitored and recorded since 1991. Hacks in the prison mail room have been reading my mail for 25 years. So, what you now experience is just a more broadly applied, slightly more complicated program of surveillance developed right here in the prison mail room. Our common enemy knows it would be too expensive to take the entire population to prison. So, instead, they brought the prison to you. They've done studies on how much rule-deviant conduct the ycan deter just through the threat of surveillance—the knowledge that the government is watching and listening. Look around. How many cameras are pointed at you? Yeah. That was exported from prison too. Again, studies on how much rebellion can be minimized… Riot response, shields and helmets and kittling—all that came from the prison yard to the college commons. Rubber bullets, pepper spray cannons, Tasers—all used first on prisoners and then perfected on you. Want to speak out against injustice? Want to peacefully demonstrate your concerns in a public setting? Yeah. Take this work. So, thanks to the ever-evolving strategies rolled out from my world into yours, you now live your butchered half-lives with a shotgun in your face. You have the right to shut up…or else. But you don't have the right to a living wage. In the current election cycle, the corporate party candidates bemoan the disappearance of manufacturing and union-scale jobs to other countries. But they don't talk about the jobs that moved down the street and over the barbed wire. Ohio prisoners performed slave labor for the Ford Motor Company and Honda for pennies a day while folks you know are sleeping in their cars. This slavery allows prison officials to run their plantations on the cheap, to your detriment. And none of this speaks to the likelihood of desperate and destroyed human debris getting dumped from this debilitating program back into your neighborhood, with no opportunities and absolutely no tools for developing healthy relationships. We're not dealing with a system here that fails to rehabilitate 90% of the time, creating future crime and victimization. We're dealing with a system that works as designed, manufacturing crime and suffering, creating an industry of crime and crime response, a system that sees you and your well-being as collateral damage. You're not safer because prison (mis)managers lock up prisoners; you're less safe because prison (mis)managers destroy and mangle human beings and then set them loose. On top of all that, the militarized police force is a projection of a looming threat that you too can be scooped up and destroyed for decades directly, and that looming threat serves to maintain the current status quo. It's a no-brainer that the prison complex is an integral component to the fascist police state keeping you un-free. So, that being the case, a challenge to this control complex is pregnant with the potential for radically altering the government's capacity to maintain all of the consequences just listed. It all goes together. The planned work stoppage on September 9th doesn't seek better food or pizza parties for coddled criminals; it seeks to change the world you and I both live in. It seeks to empower the powerless to at least imagine the future we deserve and to inspire the belief that we can do something about it. Look. You can struggle against the terror state when it is still disorganized and casualties will be few, or you can wait. You can wait and struggle against the terror state when its powers are established and casualties will be greater, or you can wait again…You can wait and struggle against the terror state when victory will be very hard and casualties will be great…or you can continue to wait. You can wait and struggle against the terror state when victory will be dubious and the struggle feels hopeless, or yet again you can wait… You can wait and struggle against the terror state when there is no hope of victory and you only fight because it is better to fight and to die that to live as a slave. The choice is yours. Some choose to fight now. I make this statement in full knowledge that having said what I've said, I might never be heard from again…unless we take this motherfucker down. So, look. I'm not going to tell you that if you opt out of this pivotal stand against our common enemy and it fails that our children or our grandchildren will look back at this crucial moment and pity us for our cowardice and our inaction, that they will lament the intolerable existence under fascism to which we doomed them. No. That's not what I'm saying. What I'm saying is that if we don't act now and if we don't succeed, our children and grandchildren will live so un-free, they will sit in regimented rows in their classroom, wearing uniforms and arm-bands, and the teacher will swat the blackboard with a horse-crop to draw their attention to the message written there: “IT HAS ALWAYS BEEN THIS WAY.” And it will be as if this moment never existed. Only one thing stands between us and that dystopian future: YOU. This is Anarchist Prisoner Sean Swain from Warren Correctional Institution at Lebanon, Ohio. If you're listening, you are the resistance.

Suzy Barile - Undaunted Heart: The True Story Of A Southern Belle & A Yankee General Undaunted Heart: The True Story Of A Southern Belle & A Yankee General When a brigade of General Sherman's victorious army marched into Chapel Hill the day after Easter 1865, the Civil War had just ended and President Abraham Lincoln had been assassinated. Citizens of the picturesque North Carolina college town had endured years of hardship and sacrifice, and now the Union army was patrolling its streets. One of Sherman's young generals paid a visit to the stately home of David Swain, president of the University of North Carolina and a former governor of the state, to inform him that the town was now under Union occupation. Against this unlikely backdrop began a passionate and controversial love story still vivid in town lore. When President Swain's daughter Ella met the Union general, life for these two young people who had spent the war on opposite sides was forever altered. General Smith Atkins of Illinois abhorred slavery and greatly admired Abraham Lincoln. Spirited young Ella Swain had been raised in a slave-owning family and had spent the war years gathering supplies to send to Confederate soldiers. But, as a close friend of the Swain's wrote, when Atkins met Ella, the two "changed eyes at first sight and a wooing followed." The reaction of the Swains and fellow North Carolinians to this North-South love affair was swift and often unforgiving. In Undaunted Heart: The True Story of a Southern Belle and a Yankee General, author Suzy Barile, a great-great-granddaughter of Ella Swain and Smith Atkins, tells their story, separating facts from the elaborate embellishments the famous courtship and marriage have taken on over the generations. Interwoven throughout Undaunted Heart are excerpts from Ella's never-before-published letters to her parents that reveal a loving marriage that transcended differences and scandal.
