This week, I got to talk with Jakob Kerr about his new technothriller Dead Money! We dive into hos his experience in Silicon Valley informed the book, why the tech industry is a prime thriller setting, and how he came up with one of the best intro paragraphs.Dead Money SynopsisDon't call me a fixer. This isn't HBO.In her job as unofficial “problem solver” for Silicon Valley's most ruthless venture capitalist, Mackenzie Clyde's gotten used to playing for high stakes. Even if none of those tech-bro millions she's so good at wrangling ever make it into her pockets. But this time, she's in way over her head—or so it seems. The lightning-rod CEO of tech's hottest startup has just been murdered, leaving behind billions in “dead money” frozen in his will. As the company's chief investor, Mackenzie's boss has a fortune on the line—and with the police treading water, it's up to Mackenzie to step up and resolve things, fast.Mackenzie's a lawyer, not a detective. Cracking this fiendishly clever killing, with its list of suspects that reads like a who's-who of Valley power players, should be way out of her league.Except that Mackenzie's used to being underestimated. In fact, she's counting on it.Because the way she sees it, this isn't an investigation. It's an opportunity. And she'll do anything it takes to seize it.Anything at all.Featuring jaw-dropping twists and a wily, outsider heroine you can't help rooting for, Dead Money is a brilliant sleight-of-hand mystery. Written by a longtime insider, it is also a dead-on snapshot of the Valley's rich and famous—and a glimpse at the darkness lurking behind the tech world's cheery facade. Key Takeaways: Inflation Lowers Your Savings' Value – Over time, the money you save in regular bank accounts or dollar-based investments loses buying power. This means your retirement savings might not go as far in the future. Scarce Assets Hold Value – Things that are rare, like Bitcoin, art, or property, tend to keep or grow in value because they can't be easily duplicated. Investing in these can help protect your money. Bitcoin's Limited Supply – There will only ever be a certain amount of Bitcoin, unlike regular money that governments can keep printing. This makes Bitcoin a strong alternative to traditional savings. Digital Assets Strengthen Retirement Plans – Adding digital assets like Bitcoin to your retirement account (like an IRA) can help protect against inflation and give your savings a boost over time. Turn Savings into Wealth – By including Bitcoin in your retirement portfolio, your money doesn't just sit – it has the potential to grow significantly. This transforms your retirement plan from simple savings into a tool for building wealth. It's the same as PFR have to put 40 in the pot to your 20. Or another way is if you are a 2/1 dog if you were only heads up and they put half the money in and you put half the money in, you are in a losing spot. But with the 20 dead money in, you are 2/1 against. But there is 2 (20) in the pot to your 1 (20) in the pot. 2/1. This is a break even to profitable spot. And any time they both fold you auto profit. This is why 3b with playable hands is so important. When there is a middle player flatting.

I start the show talking about the storms the last few days, and the best readers of the magazine to date. I also put an all call out for HOTW and Call the Floor submissions. You can actually hear the rain pelting the windows as Elle and I record "Table Talk". We review "Dead Money", the new poker movie. Elle gives the history of Bourbon Heritage Month, and talks jigsaw puzzle competitions. We also learned that there is a 45 minute flight in Las Vegas equipped to help you join the Mile High Club. On the "Call the Floor" segment a situation comes up where the dealer spreads the deck into or onto the muck and Elliott talks about his ruling there, but also about dealer training. Our "HOTW" has us coming into the SB position but buying the blinds, and facing a big raise pre-flop with QJ off suit. I end the show with "Joe's One Outer" talking about patience. Estate attorneys are now creating trusts aimed at extending wealth until people who get cryonically preserved can be revived, even if it's hundreds of years later. These revival trusts are an emerging area of law built on a tower of assumptions. Still, they're being taken seriously enough to attract true believers and merit discussion at industry conferences. The revival trust is a twist on the dynasty trust, a tool used by ultra-wealthy people who plan to pass wealth down to multiple generations. If you are rich enough, there is the “Dead Money” plan where you are sharing refrigerator space with Walt Disney — you can bet against the house that someone will remember your wealth as you are dripping away during the thawing process. Tonight on Ground Zero (7-10 pm, pacific time), Clyde Lewis talks with financial analyst, Alan Johnson about DOLLAR OF THE LIVING DEAD. Steven Smyrl is a professional genealogist who has been at the heart of Irish genealogy for over 30 years. He and Paul go back a long way. They reminisce about how Steven got involved in family history in Ireland and his early days in the profession. They also touch on his work on the unsuccessful campaign to have the 1926 Census released early. But coincidentally funding for the digitisation of that census was announced on the day this podcast went live. Steven is somewhat taken aback by a compliment paid by Paul, but Paul ploughs on despite Steven's proper show of humility. Protestant dissenting congregations are one of several areas of genealogy and history in which he has particular expertise. His book, Dictionary of Dublin Dissent (Dublin, 2009), is a major contribution to research in that area. His primary work is in probate research. He tells Paul about the television series Dead Money in which he and his genealogist brother, Kit Smyrl, were the stars of the show, tracing some interesting inheritance cases. Steven is well known for his voluntary work in the field, especially with the Irish Genealogical Research Society and his professional organisation, Accredited Genealogists Ireland. However, few will know that he was instrumental in having the 1939 National Register for England and Wales released. Posterity will thank him for his involvement in having extra information added to death records in the Republic and in Northern Ireland from the 2000s forward. Steven Smyrl is involved in genealogy on all fronts and this chat could have gone on for hours. Mike Mulligan and David Haugh were joined by White Sox television analyst Steve Stone to discuss who could be the club's managerial candidates should Tony La Russa step away after this season. Stone doesn't believe former White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen will be in the picture. Stone also shared his belief that the White Sox's first order of business should be to decide how much dead money they'll eat in 2023, then designate a few players for assignment accordingly.

Your feedback helps me to improve the podcast and grow the show's audience. Follow me on Twitter and YouTube Twitter Handle: @TreyHenninger YouTube Channel: DIY Investing Show Outline The Dead Money Problem and Solution “If you remember only one thing today: Time is Money” What is Dead Money? Any asset you own that is not growing intrinsic value over a period of time. The focus here is on the fundamentals of the business. NOT the stock price. We can't predict stock prices. We're not going to try. Why is this a problem? The longer you hold a dead money position the worse off you are. Principle: Time x Position Sizing x Expected Return of Alternatives = Lost value By using this formula you can anticipate how much exposure you have to dead money losses. The Solution: The impact is large (Big “lost value” bucket) [>> 1%] The likelihood of success is high (Big difference in expected return between opportunities) At least 10% Passivity is better than action. Action leads to errors. Always remember that you had good reasons for your original buy decisions. Summary: Time is Money! Investors lose value on any asset they own that is not growing intrinsic value over time. This episode provides value investors with my solution on how to optimize their portfolio in the face of dead money assets and potential opportunities
