HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!It is The Phantoms 85th Birthday - on this day back in 1936, something amazing happened with the debut of a comic strip in the newspapers that has changed the world and many peoples lives. We at Chronicle Chamber have celebrated the birthday by talking about each of the decades in detail and going over what we believe are the key moments through out the Phantoms history.Have a listen and tell us what you agree with and do not agree with. Have we missed any key dates or moments? We would love to hear back from you. Here are a few moments we discussed in the podcast. The video will have images showing the dates.1930'sOath of The Phantom, Comics being published around the world, strong character development, top stories, world wide appeal.1940'sWW2, Frew Publications, Wilson McCoy and Alfred Bester filling in for Lee Falk and Ray Moore, First mainstream merchandise, serial featuring Tom Tyler, the first engagement, Mr Walker alias, love interests from other characters to Diana and The Phantom.1950'sHeaps of new countries (Brazil, Sweden, Indonesia, Denmark, Norway etc), Jungle Patrol, the good mark and the Female Phantom were both introduced. Our Phantom was first introduced as the 21st Phantom1960'sSy Barry started on the Daily and Sunday strips, modernisation of the Phantom being moved to Africa and Bengalla becoming independent breaking from its former colonialism rule. RGE/Semic started creating their own stories. Luaga, General Bababu, Eden, Rex, Whispering Woods, Keela Wee, Phantom Peak and Bomsbay Prison were all introduced.1970'sThe Phantom and Diana finally were married and then had two children. The stories from Sweden had a left lean towards them and emerged as the biggest producer of Phantom stories in the world. Old Man Mozz, Kit and Heloise, Dogai Singh, Mori tribe, Wasaki Tribe, origin of the Bandar friendship, the Dolphins, Hzz and Steggy were all introduced. The 7th, 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th, 13th, 14th, 15th and 18th Phantoms are all introduced to readers also.1980'sJim Shepherd took over Frew and modernised the comic. There was an explosion of merchandise in Australia and Sweden helped by the popularity of the clubs. Comic numbers sold in Brazil, Sweden and Australia all peaked. Defenders of the Earth was introduced. Fantomen Land in Sweden was opened and Frew went from the dominate blue cover to yellow strip top.1990'sThe 1996 Billy Zane movie, Sy Barry retiring and Lee Falk passing away was the big three of the decade. We were also introduced to Lubanaga, perhaps the biggest foe the 21st Phantom has ever dealt with. Fantomen moved to colour and Semic sold their rights to Egmont. Unfortunately with Lee Falk nearing his end and Sy barry retiring the newspaper stories hit an all time low. We also saw the 2040 Phantom TV show.2000'sMoonstone started publishing comics, Ulf Granberg was instrumental is saving the newspaper strips existence with Cleas Remeirthi and Tony DePaul. Continue decline in Egmont and Frew sales. Introduction of Sandal Singh and the Python as major arch nemeses to the 21st Phantom.2010'sEnd of an era with Ulf Granberg retiring and Jim Shepherd passing away. Frew Crew picked up the mantle and ran with it. Kid Phantom and Fantomen Kids started. Introduction to the Nomad and numerous swapping of newspaper artists. A bigger focus on Australian created content. We then discussed our favourite decades and had a go at predicting what we believe will be key moments throughout the 2020's.Make sure you stay with us and do not forget to subscribe and leave a review on our podcast and or our

In a very special X-Band: The Phantom Podcast, the ChronicleChamber team are once again privileged to be joined by living legend Sy Barry. As any self-respecting phan knows, Sy Barry drew The Phantom Daily and Sunday newspaper strips for 33 years from 1961 to 1994. It's been two years since we last spoke to the great man for a podcast, back in December 2016, episode #53.Sy is as vibrant and generous with his time as ever. We embark on a wide-ranging conversation covering his career in the comics industry, with a particular focus on his time with The Phantom. It's fascinating listening as Sy recounts stories of the artists and creators he worked with over time, including memories of the legendary Stan Lee. He also reflects on many of the assistants he had during his career on the strip.A number of Patreon questions are answered, Sy lets us know what he really thinks of the phans that come to see him at Comic Conventions, and we make a sneaky suggestion for a piece of merch that Sy embraces pretty quickly! It is genuinely disappointing that the video recording of this chat failed, but thanks to Sy's son David, we do have some video to share with you soon - keep an eye on our YouTube channel! We know you'll enjoy this chat with the man who has provided us all with so very much happy Phantoming over the years.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/chroniclechamber)

In this episode we are honoured to be joined by one of the most prolific The Phantom Daily newspaper strip artists, and the only one to share his initials with our hero!Keith Williams picked up the strip after Sy Barry retired and, together with penciller George Olesen, worked on the strip from 1994-2005. In total, he inked 32 Daily stories and was at the helm when the 1996 Billy Zane film premiered. Post 2005, Keith also inked The Phantom stories for both Moonstone (the Captain Action crossover stories) and Egmont. Armed with a host of queries from Patreon supporters who were given the opportunity to submit their questions, Jermayn and Dan are able to have a truly wide-ranging conversation with the New York based artist. In the podcast Keith chats about his heroes in the comic art world and shares the time he sought advice from his teacher and mentor, the legendary Will Eisner - "Should I take up this offer of doing The Phantom strip?"It's fascinating to hear how Keith faced the daunting task of taking over from Sy Barry, the man who many phans consider to be the greatest Phantom artist of all time. Keith also reflects on working with three different authors in Lee Falk, Claes Reimerthi, and Tony DePaul. One particularly compelling part of the conversation is as Keith reflects on being an African-American artist working on what some critics perceive to be a comic strip troubled with a white supremacist hero and other racist undertones. We know you will enjoy this conversation with a very unassuming and humble man, who played a crucial role in the journey of our hero. As always - Happy Phantoming!Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/chroniclechamber)

Opportunities like this do not come along very often. Ulf Granberg is the man behind Egmont in their glory years - he was the editor of the Swedish Phantom comic book, Fantomen from 1973 to 1987, then again from 2003 to 2012. Ulf has also written over 30 Phantom stories himself. That is over 40 years of being paid to write, edit, read and plot our hero!Ulf is a treasure trove of stories and anecdotes. He interacted with creators from Lee Falk, Sy Barry, Norman Worker, Jamie Vallve and the list goes on and on. and on and on and on!!This interview is so good and so long, Ulf was so very generous with his time, we have had to split it into several parts.
