This week's episode gets right into the recap as we discuss the very safe second episode of “Suits LA.” Then Sejohn was turned off by the art style of the new Beat ‘Em Up game releasing this week featuring Lee Falk's The Phantom that he ended up skipping the demo, and Devon is standing by to confirm the game isn't much better when being interacted with. This leads the discussion towards some of our good and bad experiences with gaming before we discuss how there used to be whole stores dedicated to selling toys and how that industry has changed in our lifetimes. Finally we discuss the Lost Media Trailer for the cancelled CW Powerpuff Girls adaptation that totally made us regretful that the series never came to fruition.

The 100th iteration of the iconic Supanova pop culture convention, in Brisbane November 2024, was a landmark event, especially for Phantom fans who descended upon the city in numbers. This year's gathering was a celebration of all things Phantom, with a host of activities and special guests that made it an unforgettable experience.Among the highlights were appearances by talented Phantom cover artists Jamie Johnson, Alex Trpcevski, and Lauren Marshall. These renowned artists, each of them stars across many walks of fandom but known by Phantom phans for their work with Frew Publications, showcased their work with a range of prints, comics and commissions available . They each have recent, current, and upcoming covers which really added emphasis to the currency of our favourite character. Lauren, Alex and Jamie participated in an entertaining Phantom-themed sketch-off, much to the delight of fans who got to witness their creative process firsthand while peppering them with questions all the while.Saturday was packed with social activities that brought the Phantom community even closer. The day began with a casual breakfast hosted by Chris and Kim Hill, where fans were treated to informal catch-ups and a delightful brekky to accompany a tour of Chris' Minor and Major Treasure Rooms in their newly established Skull Cave. It was a delight to see Chris' thoughtful displays of some incredibly rare and diverse Phantom memorabilia and connect over our shared passions. The evening saw the inaugural Brisbane Phantom Phans' Dinner, coordinated by the extraordinary Christopher Schaffer. This intimate gathering was set in a wonderful atmosphere, with a delicious menu and excellent company. A poignant toast was made to departed Phantom luminaries, including Lee Falk, Jim Shepherd and Richard Fry. Another highlight of the evening was a question and answer session with Shane Foley, Frew cover and story artist, who shared insights into his work and experiences, as well as passing some of his original art around for all to see. We're pleased to report that most of it got returned to him! Attendees were delighted to hear from Shane, making the dinner an even more memorable event.Brisbane Supanova 2024 was more than just a convention for those of us with purple in our veins. Thanks to Christopher's initiative and the support of others, it was a testament to the enduring legacy of the Phantom and the vibrant community that continues to celebrate this beloved character. For those who couldn't attend, be sure to listen to the related podcast, where you can hear interviews with the three artists at Supanova, their sketch-off, and the Q&A with Shane Foley at the dinner. Here's to many more gatherings and the continued adventures of the Ghost Who Walks!Support the show
The team does not get a chance to nerd out too much by discussing the Phantom in finer details. This podcast fixes that with one podcasters wife commenting that this is perhaps our nerdiest conversation ever!We will discuss two big questions: Is it ethical for the Phantom to have a major treasure room and is the key to the Phantoms future, the digital comic? To join in this discussion we have Seuj Abir from India joining Dan Fraser, Stephen East and Jermayn Parker. We would love your opinions on what we discuss in this podcast. You can email us at chroniclechamber@gmail.com or chat via our social media profiles with your feedback at Facebook, Twitter and or Instagram. For those who have come in late, The Major Treasure Room houses artefacts from around the world throughout history that the Phantom has rescued or has been given to by people he has interacted with. The sole aim is to protect these items from fire, flood and destruction.Throughout the past 60 odd years when it was first introduced, we have had stories created by from various Newspaper, Team Fantomen, Fratelli Spada and RGE creators. There has been nearly 100 different artefacts shown or have had stories written about them. When the room was conceived by Lee Falk, the world was crazy coming off the second world war with various looted treasures being found. However is that still the case and should they be returned? Our second and last Phantom hard question we will discuss in this podcast is the power of the digital comic. We have seen Lightning Strikes announcing their new monthly digital anthology, Comics Kingdom adding more importance with their digital daily comic website and three comic publishers in Frew, Fantomen and Mad Cave Studios releasing digital content. Is it time for the Phantom to be pushed digitally more? Can the phantom comic survive without a digital presence?Make sure you stay with us and do not forget to subscribe and leave a review on our podcast and or our YouTube Channel.Support the Show.

This week, a returning champion is covered on the pod! 1996's THE PHANTOM marks the return of Lee Falk's most famous creation to the silver screen after the 1943 film serial. And…look, it's competent, you get some good old-fashioned stunt work, you get a classic weird Billy Zane performance. But…this is basically an episode all about Treat Williams and the villainous Xander Drax. Listen along and enjoy!
Show Notes Provided by Joe Peluso Our fascination with pop culture affords us many pleasures. We get to regularly experience stories of wonder, excitement, and hope. We gape in awe at the images that leap from the minds and souls of creatives that transport us to "strange new worlds", and "never-ending battles". But perhaps the greatest pleasure derived from our immersion in pop culture--old and new--is something that never gets old; Our enjoyment of the shared experience with friends. Bonds are forged, and friendships are created when we discover there are more of "us" out there looking to discuss and dissect the latest issue of Batman, or the most recent episode of Star Trek: Picard. And every so often, through the magic and majesty of comics, TV, and movies an old friendship, sundered by time and geography, is renewed. I'm your apologetic, long-winded host, Joe, who through the auspices of my good friend, James Louie, was given the opportunity to renew a friendship of my youth. What follows is an interview with Keith Williams, a forty-year veteran of comics and comic strips. Keith is an award-winning creator who has worked for DC, and Marvel, and studied under Will Eisner--WILL EISNER! He's worked with Joe Sinnott, and John Byrne, and plied his skills for ten years on Lee Falk's Phantom comic strip. And those are just some of Keith's accomplishments. With this fun-filled interview, I think it's no secret here that I got to accomplish something also. After almost forty years, I got the opportunity to speak to a buddy I worked with in my Barnes and Noble Bookstore days. I experienced the "wonder, excitement, and hope" that stems from our shared devotion to pop culture--a common bond that led me to a renewed friendship. I think I'm a lucky guy! I sincerely hope you enjoy this episode as much as I did.

We're closing out two month's of "Pulp Frustration" with a look at 1996's ill-fated adaptation of Lee Falk's classic comic-strip hero, The Phantom. Intended as a star vehicle for Billy Zane, The Phantom was shepherded by two mega-producers, and came complete with a script co-written by beloved genre icon Joe Dante. But when the writers aren't on the same page as, well, nearly everyone else involved, it can spell disaster. How does The Phantom stack up against the other pulp heroes we've seen so far? Is Treat Williams in a different movie than everyone else? And were they honestly expecting audiences to take that costume seriously? We discuss all this, and more, as we "Slam Evil!" In X-Band: The Phantom Podcast #247 Matt Kyme chatted with us about his involvement with the exciting Phantom video game. We have some phun (with a PH) and discuss playing in Lee Falk's sandbox. The concept of playing in a sandbox is about playing with someone else's creation, ie the Phantom. Jermayn Parker, Stephen East and Dan Fraser are joined with Shane Foley and Matt Kyme who are two creators who thrive playing in the sandbox. All creators go some way into adding the “toys” that creators can play with in the sandbox. However today we're getting a bit more specific. Today we're discussing how creators utilise specific stories to create their own sandboxes to play in. We'll be focusing mainly on Lee Falk stories. Some of the topics we discussed are:Both creators using oodles of Lee Falk story references. For example Frew #1938/9 had three story references. How they get these ideas of adding or filling gaps in past stories. Why Lee Falk stories and not Tony DePaul or the Team Fantomen stories. Why is Lee Falk important to them.Do you like the Fantastical Lee Falk stories? How do you pay tribute to his stories?Do you see your work as 'Lore'?What are some pitfalls of you must look out for when playing in the sandbox?Would Shane Foley ever create stories with Kit and Heloise?Do you use the Phantom Bible?Shane Foley's defense of the 9th Phantom and him being portratyed as the 'Runt'?Their upcoming projectsAre Matt Kyme and Shane Foley coming to Sydney Supanova in 2023?Others who have spoken about the sandbox concept include Paul Mason and Jeff Weigel, we recommend giving their podcasts a re-listen for some other perspectives on the topicI hope you phans enjoyed that. Jermayn Parker is the odd man out as he is joined not by one, or even two but three Swedes in Mikael Lyck, Andreas Eriksson and Jacob Habinc. For Those Who Came In Late: Andreas and Jacob are the editors for Fantomen and they give what we can look forward to for the year 2023. Mikael Lyck helps drill the two editors and we manage to get several exclusives from the editorial team.We start off by learning about Jacob Habinc and Andreas Eriksson and their histories with the comic and their roles as joint editors for the magazine. We then ask the questions about Fantomen 2023 and what we can expect. They will release the same amount of issues with the same amount of pages and a Christmas album and softcover album. The best news is that we will see another hardcover collection book like we saw in 2022 with the Heart of Darkness book. They gave us one clue which is that the stories are Team Fantomen and drawn and written by the same creators. We think we have an idea of the theme, do you? Let us know in the comments or on socials. Some of the other topics we touch upon are the future of the magazine, subscription and printing numbers, some of the new and or returning creators we will see in 2023 like Sal Velluto, Rafael Ruiz, Phillip Madden, David Bishop and Anna Weatherley. One interesting subject was how and why they select Frew stories to print in their own magazines. The other interesting path was how they plan to go ahead with the Sandal Singh and 22nd Phantom plots and how the death of Claes Reimerthi has caused them to rethink the future of the storylines. If you are a patreon of Chronicle Chamber, do not forget if you are a patreon all sneak peaks from Art of Play Games will be first shown to our $5 and above level Patreons, so now is the perfect time to join. The team interviews the man behind perhaps the biggest news of the last 10 years - the announcement of the Phantom video game by Art of Play Games. Thousands of phans from around the world were shocked, amazed and generally excited at the announcement. After the excitement sunk in, the questions flowed so we sat down with Art of Play games director Ash Nicholls who was very open and we think to say after two hours, there may not be many questions we didn't ask. Some of the key questions that are answered in the podcast are:Is it a 2D or 3D style game? The genre of the game and why Art of Play Games chose this genre. The game levels and storylineKey dates including the digital, console and collector box release dates. What will be in the collector boxesThe price points for the various ways of purchasing the game.Who are the artists and writers involved in the creation of the game. Will it be multi player? What generation of the Phantom is featured? What countries and locations will the Phantom be visiting? Will regular and known characters of the Phantom be included in the game? Will there be a morality clause with the game play that suits the Phantom ethos? What Phantom tropes will be non negotiable? Is there room for an expanded “game universe” with other Phantoms or characters like Flash, Mandrake etc? When can we expect more images or gameplay footage?Easter eggs during the gameWill the game play like a comic? Will there be a collectible element? How many units Art of Play Games need to sell to make a profitThe ball park figure to make this game.During the podcast, Ash asks for phan input on certain elements, so ensure you listen or watch and send your feedback to our comments sections. To follow the progress on their website and social media accounts:Website Facebook Instagram Twitter Hastag: #PhantomGame If you are a patreon of Chronicle Chamber, make sure you login to your patreon account as we have a bonus chat with Ash which is just for our patreons. Something a little special this time around as we interview Norwegian Ivan Pedersen who is a long time phan & has worked on 6+ publishers living the dream as a phan. Majority of phans who have a social media profile would know off Ivan. Jermayn Parker flies solo chatting with Ivan as they hash out some online arguments throughout the last 20 years. It is a rather in depth interview as we start at the beginning and go through his phan years to working on the character. As we found out, he has helped coloured stories, consulted and provided scans of original newspaper strips for a lot of publishers including Frew, Fantomet, Comics Revue, Hermes, Zauberstern and Dolmen. Has their been any other phan or person who has worked with more publishers? You will learn how Ivan ticks including his views on black and white verses colour and surprisingly the one Lee Falk story he would scrap from his collection of stories - yes you read that right! We also get Ivan's opinions on some subjects like our Phantom Bible, modifying or adding to Lee Falk's lore, being called a troll, publishers printing three or four daily panels to a line and much more.If you want to learn more about buying comics from his Facebook group here or you find his Fantomet (Norway) / Frew & newspaper stories index here.If you are a patreon of Chronicle Chamber, make sure you login to your patreon account as we have a bonus chat with Ivan which is just for our patreons.

Mikael Lyck takes over the reigns and leads the interview with special guest Robert Aman about his new book "When the Phantom Became Swedish". It is a rather provocative title and we are sure it will get some reactions from phans around the world. Please note, we do discuss several stories in this podcast which are listed here and may be worth a read before listening/watching this podcast.Sweden was leading the way in the 1960's and 1970's regarding many issues in Africa and teh world at the time and it naturally flowed into their comics. Some of the 'left leaning' elements included colonialism, major white families controlling natural resources, race, apartheid, environmental issues, gender equality etc and our Phantom helped solved these issues in Team Fantomen created stories. One of the interesting things we learnt in this podcast was that phans would write in and hold Lee Falk accountable with unacceptable elements by saying he was not processive enough and how the Team Fantomen creators would 'fix' these problems. We will include an example of this in a future article on our website.Through Robert Aman we also learn that Lee Falk was very positive and acceptable of what the Swedish creators were adding to his character.Along with the list of Team Fantomen stories there is some overlap with our initial X-Band: The Phantom Podcast #101 which you may also want to listen to as well. Other podcasts worth reading along with this is our interview with Ulf Granberg in episodes #97A and #97B and Magnus Knuttson in episode #119.To follow Robert Aman you can visit his social media page here and you can buy his books here and here.Do not forget, the first person to sign up as a patreon will receive a signed copy of the book. Another signed copy will be given to a patreon for the next seasonal prize (summer / winter) which will be drawn early December 2022.You can email us at chroniclechamber@gmail.com or chat with us via our social media profiles with your feedback at Facebook, Twitter and or Instagram. Part two of pulp hero appreciation continues with everyone's favorite purple-suited, jungle dwelling crime fighter, the Phantom! Batman meets Indiana Jones was likely the elevator pitch that sold Paramount pictures on adapting Lee Falk's long-running comic strip, but despite the able efforts of Billy Zane, Treat Williams, Catherine Zeta Jones and Kristy Swanson, the Ghost Who Walks took a nosedive at the box office. Join Sebastian and guest host Matt Anderson as they slam evil and take on the mantle of this oft-mocked but memorable adventure romp.
Jermayn Parker and David Barry join forces to discuss with Scott Einiger who is the founder of Kleckt. You may remember Kleckt as the company who announced their intentions of turning Sy Barry into NFT on the Phantom's birthday in 2022.
