In this episode, Rick Tom and Samuel talk about some of the games we have played this month. Then we chat about our visit to Tabletop Gaming Live in Manchester. Games discussed - Wonderland's War Glow Great Western Trail (2nd Edition) Las Vegas Byzanz
It's Dave's belated Birthday! And what better way to celebrate than trekking up North to visit the Trafford Centre, eat a shit load of Starbars, hang out with a Canadian and snuggle up with Gerry in a Premier Inn! Also, we went to Tabletop Gaming Live for a bit. Support the show
00:00 - Listener pal Ben asks us for some gaming recommendations for new parents; exactly which games CAN you play with one hand? 10:27 - Manchester played host to Tabletop Gaming Live 2022, so naturally we were in attendance too. What a great event! 17:56 - We only get to speak about Quarto from Hachette for a little bit, but that's fine because our feelings about it are simple: you should for sure play it. 19:20 - Osprey Games delivers the goods yet again with Village Rails. In it, you'll usher in modernity and the age of steam by building a network across the British countryside. 27:14 - You can feel the money dripping off the screen when you watch The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, which we're enjoying a fair bit - but is there a danger in “fantasy” become “mundane”? 43:42 - Acram Digital are one of the greats when it comes to digital tabletop adaptations, and that's definitely the case with the excellent Unmatched: Digital Edition. 58:42 - We made you a game! You can get What's Better than a Hot Tub? from DriveThruRPG now. Also: Staying In Bingo anyone? All that, and an inappropriate aubergine, with Dan (@ThisDanFrost), Kris (@DigitalStrider), Peter (@XeroXeroXero), and Sam (@MrSamTurner). Our Spotify Playlist brings together lots of great thematic music inspired by the stuff we talk about. Go check it out, if you like. Links to where you can find us - StayingInPodcast.com Note: sometimes we'll have been sent a review copy of the thing we're talking about on the podcast. It doesn't skew how we think about that thing, and we don't receive compensation for anything we discuss, but we thought you might like to know this is the case.

Warning: This podcast contains strong language and adult content The Covid-19 lockdown may be easing in England, but don't worry as the boys from Polyhedron Collider are keeping safe and playing even more games online. But we're not the only ones, as Comic Relief played Dungeons and Dragons 5th Edition this week, with references to Boo, Tiger King and bread curses. They're not the only ones playing D&D 5E as Steve and Andy talk about their initial thoughts on the Dungeons and Dragons Essentials Kit and its adventure The Dragon of Icespire Peak, were we learn that Rory doesn't like wizards. We also give our first impressions on the Alien Roleplaying Game. We also venture into some board games, as Steve talks about “Go with extra steps” game Mitropia and Steve and Andy talk about Eternal Palace, the latest dice placement game from Alley Cat Games which is all about creating beautiful works of art. ### Using and playing extras As a GM, please avoid using these beings as easy targets. ### Taking advantage of this opportunity (6:45) * Treat as characters - start thinking about the supporting characters as characters and not as equipment/extensions of your character. * Names - so you can humanize and speak to them. * Interaction - the difference between “I use my wolf to track the scent of the escaping ogre” to “I ask Wolfenshtain if he manages to track the scent of Krislo the Ogre”. * Routine - create routines for yourself and the supporting cast. * Add the supporting character's point of view - the cave as seen through the nose of Bingo the blink dog. ### Mechanical representation (11:55) Use a system that makes it easy to handle them, and have the players do it. [Savage Worlds](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Savage_Worlds) - extras [Pathfinder](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pathfinder_Roleplaying_Game) 2e - minion [City of Mist](https://www.cityofmist.co/) - extra theme [Dungeon World](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dungeon_World) ### Hirelings (20:20) An NPC with a mechanical element that's not a part of the character. Hirelings [work hard for the money](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=09ZSKE38lTU). ### Animal companions (22:30) ### Familiars (23:55) ### Cohorts (25:35) Download for free: [Three Suggestions for Cohorot Morivations](https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B8GIH-SQ2wnrXzc4QXlUMnVUbWc/view?usp=sharing) [The full series](https://www.eranaviram.me/three-suggestions/), if you'd like to buy. ### Summary (29:00) [Avatar: The Last Airbender](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avatar:_The_Last_Airbender) [Fate/stay night](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fate/stay_night) Non-genre examples: [The Wire](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Wire). [My Name is Earl](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/My_Name_Is_Earl) ### Taking the Load off (32:25) Uri - Been to a wedding! My GM got married! With the party's paladin! Eran - Going to run Path2 in Tabletop Gaming Live, come and play! (It's actually already over, so nevermind!) Aviv - Going on a family vacation! Episode Two of the "Finding Games", a podcast by the people behind Needy Cat Games which showcases talented individuals from the tabletop industry and finds out how they ended up doing such a weird job. In Episode Two, Sophie has a chat with Matt Jarvis. Since 2016 Matt has been the editor of Tabletop Gaming, the UK’s leading magazine and website about board games, card games, miniatures and RPGs. The magazine was launched in the summer of 2015 and has since exploded in popularity, going from quarterly to bi-monthly and, most recently, monthly, accompanied by a redesign and, this year, exclusive subscriber benefits including artwork covers, discounts and promo gifts. The magazine features in-depth interviews and features with the people who make games, reviews of the latest releases, hobby tips and much, much more, while tabletopgaming.co.uk hosts daily news and up-to-date coverage of the hobby. In September 2018, Tabletop Gaming launched its first Tabletop Gaming Live convention in London’s Alexandra Palace, giving visitors the chance to play upcoming games, take part in tournaments and hear from creators in talks, workshops and seminars. The convention is back in Alexandra Palace this September 28th and 29th; tickets are on sale now via The Ticket Factory. Before he wrote about tabletop games, Matt was a video game and technology journalist. His greatest honour remains being named Best Painter in his middle-school Warhammer club. He also owns a needy cat of his own – her name is Holly, she is missing a fang and she snores like a beast. Warning: This podcast contains strong language and adult content Nanty narking is an old Victorian phrase for a right good time, and that's what we're having as we give you another generous helping of tabletop gaming chat. Jon takes on the role of News Ferret as he weasels out the latest board game news, Steve takes us through current Kickstarter games Simulation Theory, Micro Brew and Nanty Narking, and Andy just adds his usually colourful language and unique sense of perspective to proceedings.
