Political change in late antiquity that came with the collapse of the Western Roman Empire

The fall of the Roman Republic is one of the great stories in all of ancient history and it can still teach lessons relevant to every element of modern life. This telling of the Roman Republic's demise blends systems-based history, trends and forces, events like the Punic Wars and Spartacus' slave rebellion, and the sheer will of legendary historical figures like the Gracchi brothers, Gaius Marius, Sulla, Julius Caesar, Cleopatra, Mark Antony, Octavian, and more. Shedding light on wealth inequality, political and economic corruption, population shifts, the impact of war-both overseas and at home, political violence, questions over citizenship, economic populism, zero-sum politics, violation of political and social norms, a loss of faith in democracy, and more-this historical story has something for everyone. -Consider Supporting the Podcast!- Leave a rating or review on apple podcasts or spotify! Professor Kozlowski tempts the wrath of the Internet by discussing the history of Judaism and Christianity by recounting the major events and themes of the Christian Bible. Along the way we'll revisit some important moments in ancient history, bump into some early Christian heresies, and talk about different perspectives on Christian teaching. ...hopefully without starting any flame wars... It's the end of the year, and that means our annual State of the Union episode is here! In this episode, I'm joined by judicial scholar Dr. Sara Benesh, historian and expert on the fall of Rome, Dr. Edward Watts, and scholar of political violence, Dr. James Hawdon. We draw striking parallels between Rome's transition from a republic to an autocracy and the current state of American politics, and we discuss the erosion of institutional integrity, the rise of political violence, and the unsettling warning sign found in events like the January 6th Capitol attack. We question whether America's democratic foundations might be at risk of crumbling under similar pressures of corruption and strongman politics. As Donald Trump makes his return to the presidency, the dynamics of the U.S. Supreme Court face intense scrutiny. So, we discuss how the current Court might behave under a second Trump presidency, and how the Court's legitimacy may further erode amidst mounting partisan divides. Historical unpredictability among justices is a focal point, as we examine how their decisions could serve as both checks on presidential power and potential avenues for self-aggrandizement. The stakes are raised by provocative statements from Trump's vice president, J.D. Vance, about ignoring Supreme Court decisions, posing a significant challenge to the court's future authority. The path forward for American democracy is fraught with challenges. Our discussion underscores the collective responsibility to defend democratic institutions, emphasizing that this duty extends beyond judges and politicians to each and every citizen. With the world watching, we weigh the potential consequences of ignoring warning signs of political decay, urging listeners to consider their stance in this pivotal moment. How will history judge our actions during this critical time for democracy?Counterpoint Podcast-------------------------Follow Deep Dive:InstagramYouTube Email: deepdivewithshawn@gmail.com Music: Majestic Earth - Joystock

Throughout the history of civilization, the rise and fall of empires has remained one of the most striking phenomena that impacts societies. Ancient cultures who seemingly reached the apex of human achievement for their time could often swiftly be reduced to ashes, by factors ranging from invasions by foreign enemies, to natural cataclysms. However, there are also mysteries about the disappearances of societies throughout history, leading to unanswered questions about how civilizations can seemingly vanish into the mists of time. This week on The Micah Hanks Program, we go in search of answers to the question of how societies collapse, and the intriguing mystery surrounding the disappearance of cultures and the tragic fall of some of history's greatest empires. On this episode of Unsupervised Learning Razib talks to archeologist and historian Bryan Ward-Perkins about his 2005 book The Fall of Rome: And the End of Civilization. Ward-Perkins was born and grew up in Rome, a son of architectural historian and archaeologist, John Bryan Ward-Perkins. Educated at Oxford University, Ward-Perkins eventually became a fellow of Trinity College at the same university, from which he has since retired. An archaeologist with a deep interest in economic history, Ward-Perkins' standout book The Fall of Rome was to a great extent a restatement of traditional understandings of the Roman fall in the wake of academic revisions stimulated by Peter Brown's 1989 World of Late Antiquity: AD 150-750. Ward-Perkins scholarship focuses on the outputs of economic production: fine pottery, grand public buildings and copious coinage. In contrast, Brown and his fellow travelers tended to focus on religious innovation and creativity in the centuries coincident with Rome's fall. The Fall of Rome documents in crisp, dense prose the material collapse attendant with the dissolution of the Western Empire in the late 5th and 6th centuries, from the vanishing of pottery in Britain to the cessation of the construction of massive buildings across the Italian peninsula. Razib also asks Ward-Perkins his opinions on his colleague Pete Heather's book The Fall of the Roman Empire: A New History of Rome and the Barbarians. Ward-Perkins sees Heather's work as complementary; while Ward-Perkins is interested in the material aspects of everyday Roman life, Heather documents and narrates the diplomatic and military affairs of the Roman elite. Ward-Perkins also comments on Chris Wickham's work in books like The Inheritance of Rome: Illuminating the Dark Ages 400-1000, which outlines how the Roman and post-Roman states differed, in particular, the disappearance in Europe of professional soldiers paid in currency, rather than feudal levies. They also discuss Walter Scheidel's Escape from Rome: The Failure of Empire and the Road to Prosperity, and whether Roman citizens were actually materially better off than their medieval successors. Ward-Perkins also gives his estimation of the time measured in centuries until Western Europe reattained Roman levels of social, technological and political complexity. If American democracy were to collapse, what historical parallels could help us understand what we might be in for? Nazi Germany? Learn how the Nazis swiftly exploited the Reichstag Fire in 1933 to enact the Reichstag Fire Decree, leading to a brutal suppression of political opponents and securing their dominance in the March 5th elections. We explore economic and social turmoil in Weimar Germany that laid the groundwork for Hitler's ascent, drawing poignant comparisons to the fragility of today's democratic system in the United States, and reveal the strategic maneuvers the Nazis employed to position themselves as the true representatives of Germany, transcending traditional political labels and focusing on national unity and modernization. We discuss the cultural anxieties exacerbated by rapid modernization and urbanization, and how Hitler's propaganda machine capitalized on these fears to foster a return to traditional values, further deepening societal and political divides. And, we explore the unique political skills and empathetic understanding Hitler used to galvanize support, setting a dangerous precedent for charismatic leadership in times of crisis. But, when we consider the similarities between conditions in Weimar Germany immediately prior to the collapse of democracy to the conditions in the United States, does past mean prelude? Maybe the gradual democratic collapse of the Roman Republic is a better corollary. So, we look into how systems designed to prevent tyranny can inadvertently lead to gridlock and public disenchantment. By examining historical events like Augustus' rise to power and modern phenomena such as gerrymandering and judicial appointments, we emphasize the subtle dangers of gradual democratic backsliding. This episode helps us understand what might lie ahead for American democracy and underscores the urgent need to recognize and address threats to democratic institutions today to prevent repeating the errors of history.Guests: Dr. Benjamin Hett, Dr. Peter Fritzsche, and Dr. Edward WattsMusic:Infados - Kevin MacLeodDark Tales: Music by Rahul Bhardwaj from Pixabay-------------------------Follow Deep Dive:InstagramYouTube Email: deepdivewithshawn@gmail.com
Support us on Patreon --- On September 4, 476 the barbarian general Odoacer deposed the last Roman emperor in the West and proclaimed himself king of Italy. After 500 years of existence, the Western Roman Empire was gone. But if you were living there at the time, would you have even noticed anything had changed? Liam and Russian Sam return to one of their favorite historical subjects, an area that has energized and terrified generations of scholars for 1500 years: the decline and fall of the Western Roman Empire. Considered to mark the end of classical antiquity and the start of the middle ages, this event was traditionally understood to be the fundamental cataclysm of the history of Europe, perhaps even the history of the world. But on the eve of the Second World War, aging Belgian historian Henri Pirenne proposed an alternative view: that the collapse of the Roman Empire and the rise of the barbarian kingdoms only amounted to a change in management. The real transformation of the Roman world into the medieval world would not happen until centuries later, when the empires of the Muslims and the Carolingian Franks built new political and economic systems that replaced what had been left by Rome. This is the key argument of Mohammed and Charlemagne, Pirenne's most famous work published posthumously in 1937 and one of the most revolutionary texts in medieval history. Still hotly debated today, Pirenne's thesis upended a seemingly adamantine tradition of scholarship established by the Italian humanist Petrarch in the 14th century, and elaborated by later historians such a Edward Gibbon, which viewed the medieval period as a detestable Dark Age that had to be redeemed by the discovery of Roman glory. While not rejecting outright the notion of an early-medieval Dark Age, Pirenne put forward a strong argument for continuity across the 4th, 5th, and 6th centuries, interrupted not by the invasions of barbarian peoples but instead by the later rise of the Muslim caliphate. New religious divisions severed the arteries of trade and communication that united the Mediterranean world. And when a new Roman Empire emerged in the west the following century, Pirenne argues that this realm of Charlemagne did not restore Roman civilization as once was believed, but instead created a new imperial system just like their Arab contemporaries. In this thought-provoking episode, Jeremy Slate draws intriguing parallels between the decline of the Roman Empire and the challenges facing America in 2024. With a master's degree in the Roman Empire, Slate delves into the historical context and highlights key similarities, such as hyperinflation, immigration issues, and centralized power struggles. He explores the reforms implemented by Emperor Diocletian to stabilize Rome and suggests that America can learn from these lessons to build a better future. Slate also discusses the potential role of Donald Trump in bringing stability and addressing these pressing issues. This insightful analysis offers viewers a fresh perspective on current events and encourages them to consider the actions needed to prevent the decline and fall of America.
Rome fell, because of... divorce. Or was it immigration? Maybe moral decay. IDEAS producer Matthew Lazin-Ryder explores the political history of 'the fall of Rome' — a hole in time where politicians, activists, and intellectuals can dump any modern anxiety they wish.
