Series C kicks off with a Tempest of activity (do you see?). Avon gets two snogs, Dayna loses two loved ones and the Sarrans are too primitive to open a hatch. Will Avon really team up with saucy Servalan to rule the galaxy? Who is the random NPC in the dunes? Is there any justification for shaving horses? And do Jim and Martin think the episode hits the mark like Dayna with an arrow, or kicks the bucket like Mike Yates and a Terileptil? Listen to find out (some of the above)! We kick off our Ian Marter retrospective with a look at his time at Oxford University. Thanks to back issues of St. Edmund Hall Magazine, we uncover new information that places Marter at Oxford three years earlier than is widely and incorrectly reported in other published sources. From our research, we found that Marter was at St. Edmund Hall, aka Teddy Hall, from 1963-1966 and was heavily involved with drama in the college's John Oldham Society and the Oxford's drama cuppers. Before Oxford, Marter went to school at the Beckenham and Penge Grammar School in Greater London and went to Oxford on a scholarship to study English language and literature. Among other highlights, Marter directed a well received production of John Osbourne's Luther in 1964 during the Trinity Term of his freshman year at the Oxford Playhouse. He also acted in productions of Fire in Heaven, The Sport of My Mad Mother, and Anton Checkov's The Cherry Orchard. In his final year at St. Edmund Hall, Marter co-starred in Samuel Beckett's play, Waiting for Gadot and was in Richard Burton's production of Doctor Faustus, by Christopher Marlowe which was also released as a film in 1967, giving Marter his first screen credit. Marter was awarded a Class III degree from St. Edmund Hall, which may help explain why he never corrected the record about his time at Oxford. After leaving Oxford in 1966, he landed an assistant stage manager job at the Bristol Old Vic and by the following year, he was acting once again. We briefly talk about his small role in the Vincent Price horror film, The Abominable Dr. Phibes, and his reoccurring role in ITV's Crown Court where he played a police constable and then barrister, Quentin Ingrams, QC. Finally, we discuss being cast as Lt. John Andrews in "Carnival of Monsters" and how Doctor Who may have been different if he landed the role of Capt. Mike Yates a few years earlier. The opening and closing music is "Sinfonietta: IV. Allegrteto," composed by Leoš Janáček and performed by the Pro Arte Orchestra, which was the opening theme for ITV's Crown Court. We recorded this episode on 12-13 August 2024.

Mike Yates is an educator, entrepreneur, and learning activist. His passion and expertise lie at the intersection of education and technology and he is a big believer in the gamification of education. Only in his late 20's or early 30's, Mike Yates led a K-12 private school in his hometown of Austin, Texas called Alpha. According to their website, Alpha was founded by education and technology experts in partnership with parents interested in bringing true innovation to the classroom guided by the belief that kids who love school work harder, step out of their comfort zone, connect with each other, and take ownership of everything from their day-to-day life to their future. Alpha uses adaptive software and unique motivational strategies to empower students to learn at the pace and in the style that works best for them, increasing productivity while fostering passions and building life skills. Alpha uses adaptive learning technology in place of direct instruction to maximize academic learning outcomes. You can learn more about Alpha in the show notes. Yates is currently utilizing his talents as a Senior Product Manager at Teach for America, the largest education nonprofit in the United States. Mike Yates is a man of many interests. As the Senior Managing Director of Strategy for the TFA (Teach for America) Reinvention Lab, he gets to flex both sides of his brain to tap into those interests to broaden the scope of TFA's mission. He spoke with Voices of E-Learning's JW Marshall and Leena Marie Salah about his exciting role within the Reinvention Lab.Teach for America sends young educators into low-income neighborhoods to teach for two years and gives these folks a tremendous leadership opportunity early in their careers. And The Reinvention Lab was born out of the need to, well, reinvent itself. I do take it as a challenge.” Some of the ideas Yates comes up with are centered around doing things to make people within TFA think differently about the possibilities of learning, partnership, branding, and art in new and exciting ways. One of the things Yates feels most passionate about is TFA's ability to show young college graduates interested in education that there is a world of opportunity to take their passions beyond the classroom. “One of my goals in life is to free as many teachers as possible from the matrix,” Yates said. “Not necessarily in ways that make you leave the classroom but expand the way you think about learning or expand the way you think about human beings. I hope to do that for people.”Motivation is the key to unlocking the learning potential of today's youth. Finding what motivates kids takes innovation and driving those initiatives within TFA is what Yates loves about his work at The Reinvention Lab.

We must face our fears as we reach the end of the Third Doctor's era. Mike Yates is back, Sarah Jane is investigating and we return to Metebelis 3. Is this a fitting end to this Doctor's time? What will we make of the Spider Queen?
Once upon a time, a student that hated the school system made his mission to change it. Today he is going strong at it, and he is telling us how and his vision for 2030.Inspired by one of his articles, we invited Michael Yates, Co-Founder of Guide, Keynote Speaker & Education Consultant.“What was school like for you? I hated school. I hated the desks in rows, the standardized testing, and the awful cafeteria food. More than anything, I could not stand the vast amounts of time I felt I was wasting by learning things that held no relevance to my adult life. As a student, I dreamed of doing school a different way. I now spend almost every day working to disrupt and change the system that I believe failed me and so many other students. I talk, write and dream so much about the future of learning, education, and schools. I didn't have to travel far to meet this week's guest, my friend, kinda neighbour and fellow Whitchurch Folk Club organiser, Paul Sartin. In the wider folk world he's probably best known as a member of Faustus, Belshazzar's Feast and, or course, a former member of Bellowhead. But it's Paul's encyclopaedic knowledge of traditional folk music, and, in particular, songs from in-and-around Hampshire, that make episode 5 of The Old Songs Podcast particularly special. Regular listeners will notice that we've returned to a few topics we've already covered, and we re-meet characters that have cropped up before, but it's so worth it when you're with someone as scholarly as Paul. In particular, it's his knowledge of the folk song collecting process that took place close to 120 years ago. As a direct ancestor to Edith Sartin and Marina Russell, two particularly noted source singers, Paul has spent a lot of time looking at the biographical detail of these people and what these songs meant to them. While we're ostensibly discussing ‘An Acre of Land', the song allows us to touch on a variety of other old songs. In the course of this episode you'll hear performances from Eliza Carthy & the Gift Band, PJ Harvey, Martin Carthy, Cohen Braithwaite-Kilcoyne, Tom Newman, Spiers & Boden, and, of course, the mighty Faustus. Here, then, is my friend and yours – Paul Sartin, freshly dosed on good coffee, hoeing down hard on ‘An Acre of Land'. Who featured in this ‘An Acre of Land' podcast?A quick recap of the songs you've just heard. Clicking on the links below will take you to places to buy the songs. The podcast opened with ‘An Acre of Land', performed by Faustus on their eponymous album. You heard Eliza Carthy & The Gift Band taking on ‘The Elfin Knight', which appeared on the Anchor album.PJ Harvey sang ‘Acre of Land' with Harry Escott on a standalone single. You heard Martin Carthy's seminal performance of ‘Scarborough Fair' from his debut album.Cohen Brathwaite-Kilcoyne's brilliant, rousing performance of ‘Country Carrier' is from his solo album, Outway Songster. The source singer you heard was Tom Newman, singing ‘All For Me Grog' or ‘My Old Hat That I Got On' to Mike Yates. For more on this song, see my blog post.Spiers and Boden performed ‘The Quaker / Brighton Camp' on their Through and Through collection. And the two songs you heard from Faustus were, of course, ‘An Acre of Land' and a clip of ‘Next Stop: Grimsby' (which I mistakenly called ‘Last Stop: Grimsby' – my apologies, both from their Faustus album (see the link above). That's all for this week's episode. See you in a couple of weeks with… well, you'll have to wait and see. So many people to speak to, so little time!

Welcome back to America‘s premier K12 education podcast! In this fantastic episode of The EdUp Edge we talk with Dan Carroll, Founder of Clever, an educational technology company that simplifies digital learning. This week, Dr. Stacey Gonzales and her guest co-host, Mike Yates discuss the complexities teachers face using digital tools, designing the organization and platform for equity, and the future of Clever. This is a wide-ranging discussion on the current and future state of technology in education. Clever was born of co-founder Dan Carroll's frustration as a school tech director in Denver. His plans to use technology to save teachers time and personalize learning were hindered by countless CSV files and forgotten passwords – he knew software could create new ways to learn, but only if everyone can log in quickly and securely. With a team of former teachers, district administrators and edtech developers, Dan drove Clever to build a single sign-on portal that now helps 65% of U.S. K-12 schools spend more time learning and less time logging in. Mike Yates is working to change the landscape of learning, helping our kids to become stakeholders and investors in their own education. In this episode, we discuss his vision for moving beyond anti-racism to being pro-black in our education system. He suggests a whole new way to do education in general, and especially for the empowerment of black and brown students. We don't always see eye-to-eye in this episode, but we come together in our commitment to finding new ways for our kids to thrive. All discussed with a chaser of civility, of course, and a coffee. To read a recap of our conversation and see what we are each reading, visit our post Anti-racism vs Pro-black, or visit our website. You can also watch the conversation on the Hold my Drink YouTube page.
