Tread Perilously concludes its month of celebrating the new series Doctor Who with "Listen." As Clara goes on a somewhat uncomfortable date, The Doctor realizes he is talking to himself and supposes there might be a more sinister reason for it. Soon, he picks up Clara for a trip to the past, the future, and an impossible era to learn the truth behind the perfect hider and the monster under your bed. All the while, Clara's date, Danny Pink, seems to be at the center of the investigation. But is that to do with Clara? And who is the boy Clara finds in a barn somewhere far from England? Justin and Erik discuss Steven Moffat as a writer and his seeming resistance to platonic friendships. Actor Samuel Anderson gets praise for his performance in this episode ... but not as Danny Pink. "Listen" is unavoidably compared to "Blink," which leads to some surprising analysis of both. Does modern Doctor Who work best when Moffat and Russell T. Davies are involved at the same time? Erik once again suggests Matt Smith left earlier than originally planned. Justin praises a key sequence in the episode. Peter Capaldi's performance as The Doctor is reviewed anew and Justin identifies the only true romantic Doctor/companion pairing of the Classic series.

Danny Pink: we hardly knew ye. Seriously. We didn't really ever get a chance to know you. But now you're gone! And you do go out with a bang. Plus, we finally see who the hell this Missy character is. Also: a half-great story from years past with all the trappings that Porter loves.

Joe & Steven; going to hell. Is this the darkest Doctor Who? How far is too far? Is this a riveting conceptual horror or a paceless bore? Danny Pink; charisma bypass? Joe won't make the compromises this story asks, and Steven is delighted about the new female Time Lady.

Happy Thursday, campers, and welcome to the next episode of Doctor Who! In this episode, I'll be honest, Jaime and I barely talk about the plot at all. We're way too distracted with what a total dick the Doctor is being, and the fact that Clara is just...letting it happen. Also, Jaime tells me about the fan opinions that were circulating at the time of this episode's airing, and I find myself surprised that people had such strong opinions to Danny Pink. Thanks again to you all for listening, and we will see you next week with a new episode!
We watch "Last Christmas" (Series 8, Episode 13) where the Doctor saves Clara (and more!) from a severe case of (dream) crabs with the aid of Father Christmas (Santa Claus to us Yanks). Whilst said saving is occurring, the Doctor and Clara come clean to each other about their last meeting (awkward...), Shona auditions strongly for companion (sorry, Clara’s staying... so very awkward...), and Danny Pink visits Clara from the grave yet again (awk... actually poignant). Come for the recap and stay for the Clara-is-leaving gaslighting (aaand we’re back to awkward... sorry Steve).
We watch "Death in Heaven" (Series 8, Episode 12) where the Doctor learns about Missy's plan (well... you couldn’t still expect to call her the MASTER could you? What with her lady parts and all...), Seb ‘squees’ yet is promptly disintegrated (see ya later Tenant stans), and Clara impersonates the Doctor (all I’m saying is a scarf woulda been nice). Whilst said cosplaying is occurring, the reanimated corpses of Danny Pink and Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart save humanity from a fate worse than rotting in the ground. What? I’m an atheist... deal!
FYI- due to a scheduling screwup on my part, there will be no episode od Doctor Who next week. It's completely my fault. I'm sorry. This episode is one in which the Doctor deals with a long-held fear that many people can likely relate to, and decides to investigate further into why it's such a ubiquitous image or dream. Also, more of Danny Pink's history is revealed, and it just gets stranger and stranger. Also, Clara isn't great at the whole tact and sensitivity thing, as it turns out. Thanks so much for listening, and we will see you in 2 weeks with a new episode!
We watch "Dark Water" (Series 8, Episode 11) where Danny Pink dies and bargains for his future (?) in the afterlife. Whilst said Life Defending is occurring, grief stricken Clara drags the Doctor on a mission to locate Danny (umm... check the morgue?), the Doctor helps her look for him (umm... check the morgue!), and Missy explains why they just can’t find him (umm... check the morgue... duh). All this plus the horrifying idea that you have all the feels in being cremated makes for one of the most frakked up penultimate season enders. Now excuse me whilst I update my living will.
We watch "In the Forest of the Night" (Series 8, Episode 10) where Clara and Danny Pink search for a missing student whilst on a school field trip to downtown London. When the Doctor locates said student Mave... Mabe... Maebh (really?)... the fun really begins! Of course by ‘fun’, I mean scenes taking place in a bizarrely empty London that’s covered in foliage, poorly green-screened wolves, and a tiger that escaped from the zoo. Plus an environmental message that culminates in the finding of a runaway sibling. Confused? Join the club.
We watch "Listen" (Series 8, Episode 4) where Clara has a disastrous first date with Danny Pink and the Doctor has an existential crisis with the thing under the bed. Whilst said events are occurring, Clara gets to timey-wimey a satisfactory conclusion for her date with former soldier Danny Pink, timey-wimey a new name for orphan Rupert Pink, and timey-wimey a safe return home for (great grandson?) time traveler Orson Pink, all whilst she timey-wimeys the fear in the Doctor that all pubescent boys have: someone is always watching what you’re doing in bed. Oh... the horror!
We get back (after an unexpected but at this point probably not surprising delay) to our regularly scheduled programming with a look at a pair of Danny Pink stories, "Listen" and "The Caretaker." The former still stands as one hell of an episode, with plenty to say about all sorts of things, Danny very much included. The latter... well, it's not very good. And honestly, that's probably the most charitable way we can put it, considering we have way worse to say in the episode proper. Plus toward the end we get into a debate about the morality of the military and being a soldier that neither of us had prepared for at all, and so has more than its fair share of hedging and stammering, yet still we'd say is considerably better thought through than the Doctor's hatred of soldiers in that episode. Anyway, the real point is that Samuel Anderson is nothing short of incredible, and we're lucky to have had him on the show. Next time, join us for the long-awaited beginning of our Clarastravaganza/Clarathon with "The Rings Of Akhaten" and "Journey To The Centre Of The TARDIS."
We'll be back soon with our regularly scheduled look at companion showcase episodes -- Danny Pink is next! -- but first, we wanted to take an episode to remember a legend of film and television. Diana Rigg died last week at 82, so we revisit her absolute delight of a performance as Mrs. Gillyflower in "The Crimson Horror." Sure, the rest of the episode isn't all that great, but! It's Diana Rigg having a complete blast as the villain, acting alongside her daughter Rachel Stirling, who is the other great part of this episode. A worthy showcase for them both, we'd say.
First thing's first: Allison has a book out! It's called "How TV Can Make You Smarter", available now at Bookshop.org and elsewhere! Plus she has a special offer for our listeners who get the book! As for the episode, well, before we return to the Capaldi era with our Danny Pink episode next week -- a prelude of sorts to the much-anticipated Clarastravaganza/Clarathon -- we take a wee break to open the mailbag. We talk some more about the specifics of Jodie Whittaker's performance, kick around a brilliant listener idea for the Jo Martin Doctor, and go on a merry digression about Steven Moffat's Jekyll, which Alasdair loves arguably a bit too much. (Nah, it's the correct amount.)

On this week's episode of Geektown Radio, we don't just have one guest, we have four! Nick Helm, Jim Howick, Samuel Anderson & Jonny Sweet, otherwise known as the cast of Channel 4's brand new comedy drama 'LOADED', which airs from Monday the 8th May 2017 at 10pm. LOADED centres around the lives of tech entrepreneurs and friends Josh, Leon, Watto and Ewan, who have just sold their start up videogame company for hundreds of millions of pounds. Amid a raging hurricane of money, excess and “millionaire’s guilt”, LOADED is about friendship, ambition, gluttony, the peculiar British distaste for other people’s success and how money can put even life-long friendships to the test. Nick Helm you should all know from the brilliant and Geektown Award winning Uncle. Jim Howick you may recognise from The Aliens, Yonderland, and Horrible Histories. Doctor Who fans will know Samuel Anderson as Clara's boyfriend Danny Pink, and Sky 1 fans will know him from Trollied. And Jonny Sweet you may know from Together, Babylon... Contents [] Plot[] is talking over her phone to , fully ready to admit she has been travelling with and that she loves Danny, when the other end goes silent. A stranger picks up and sadly informs Clara that Danny got hit by a passing car and has died. She struggles with his death for days, refusing to let her emotions go and decides to call on the Doctor to make him change the past. Without telling him her plans, she suggests they go to an active volcano, and then secretly collects all seven of the keys and after the TARDIS is in motion, strikes him with a sleep-inducing patch. When they land and the Doctor wakes up, she throws the keys one by one into the lava - the only way to destroy them - unless the Doctor takes her back to save Danny, despite knowing it would create a time paradox. The Doctor soon reveals this was just a dream state - the patch not working on him and instead had used it on Clara - to learn why she was upset, and to see how far she was willing to go. He offers, as a friend, to see if they can find Danny in the afterlife, and has Clara use the telepathic interface of the TARDIS to centre on Danny. They land in a strange mausoleum which holds several tanks of human skeletons under water. They are greeted by Missy, who introduces herself as an android receptionist, and are taken to Dr Chang, one of the scientists in the facility. The Doctor asks about the oddness of the skeletons not drifting apart, and Dr Chang reveals that they are submerged in a substance called dark water, which only allows organic material to be seen, and that the bodies are encased in a support exoskeleton. The Doctor remains curious about the facility, and Dr Chang explains how it was based on the discovery of the voices of the recently deceased in the white noise in broadcast signals; the Doctor remains doubtful of this. At the same time, Danny has regained consciousness in a spartan office and greeted by Seb, who reveals he is in the Nethersphere - a giant city enclosed within a sphere. Seb explains Danny has died, and helps him to get used to the new space, noting that he is still tied to the state of his body - likely being kept in a refrigerated morgue as he constantly feels cold. As part of this, Seb has arranged a meeting between Danny and a young boy that he had accidentally killed while he was a soldier, and while Danny tearfully tries to offer his apologies, the boy refuses and runs off. As Seb and Danny are talking, Seb then receives a notice that Clara is trying to contact Danny, who does not know that Clara has travelled to the Nethersphere. The Doctor leaves with Dr. Chang to investigate the facility further while Clara takes the call, asking a number of questions to try to assure that she is really speaking to Danny. Clara says she will do anything to be with him, and, wanting her to live out her life while believing that he is dead, Danny presses Clara to end the call. Seb then offers him the option to delete all his emotions. Meanwhile, as the Doctor and Dr Chang return to the tanks, Missy has instructed the skeletons inside to rise and starts the process to drain the tanks. She is caught as the Doctor and Dr Chang enter, and Dr Chang reveals that Missy is the supervisor of the place, rather than a receptionist. Disappointed with Chang, Missy then kills him with a handheld device. As the tanks start to drain, the skeletons are revealed to be those of . Missy points to a spherical device situated in the middle of the area and names that as the Nethersphere, revealed to be a Gallifreyan memory storage system known. Missy explains that the consciousness of the deceased are stored and held to be inserted into new Cybermen soldiers after having their emotions deleted. The Doctor frantically questions Missy's identity, coming to realise she is a possessing two hearts, which he had first recognized when they had come into contact earlier. As the tanks finally drain and open, the Doctor races out of the facility, only to discover that it is situated in the middle of contemporary London, inside . The Doctor tries to warn away civilians but Missy calls out the Doctor's actions as the ravings of a lunatic. The Doctor begs her to tell him who she is; she reveals that "Missy" is short for "the Mistress", as, in her current form, she could not call herself . The episode ends as the Cybermen begin to march on London, Clara trapped in Dr Chang's lab with another Cyberman, and Danny about to activate the deletion of his emotions when he sees the young boy he killed in the reflection. Continuity[] The episode identifies the series-long theme involving Missy, typically who has only been shown at the ends of past episodes and interacting with characters that have just died and arriving in the Nethersphere, such as the Half-Face Man from ""; this is the first episode where the Doctor, Clara, and Missy interact directly. Production[] The read through for "Dark Water" took place on 12 June 2014. Filming began soon afterwards, on 16 June 2014. Locations for the episode included , and . When filming the episode's climax, Capaldi and Gomez mouthed their lines—recorded later using —to hide the reveal from all spectators of the filming. Broadcast and reception[] Preview release[] "Dark Water" has scenes removed from the DVD previews that were sent to reviewers, and a media blackout has been imposed on any plot details that were not released by the BBC or Steven Moffat. One notable scene removed by the BBC is the revelation of Missy's identity. Reception[] Overnight viewing figures were estimated at 5.27 million. The episode received highly positive reviews from critics. Michael Hogan of gave it five stars out of five and called it a "bone-rattling and suitably spooky fare". He praised the source of everyday fears such as death for the horror and was praised the performances of Capaldi, Coleman, Anderson and Gomez. Neela Debnath of said that the episode was "sad, funny, scary, romantic" and "is everything you could ask for from a Doctor Who finale the day after Halloween." He praised the opening premise and the big reveal at the end and also commented on its allusions to Second Doctor stories, and . Matt Risley on IGN praised the episode for its "tense and traumatic dose of Who", but was critical of the lack of action, which usually went hand-in-hand with the Cybermen. Overall, he rated the first part of the finale an 8.4. Alaisdair Wilkins on the AV Club gave the episode a B rating, claiming that "Dark Water could be a good episode, or it could be a terrible one", indicating that it was only the first half of the story.

#doctorwho #podcast #tindogpodcast Reprinted from wiki Following from Clara's admission that she does not want to see the Doctor again after the events of "Kill the Moon", several weeks have passed, and she realizes that she doesn't hate the Doctor as she allows him to take her on one "last hurrah". He takes her via the TARDIS to a space-bound recreation of the Orient Express with passengers dressed in period pieces, all controlled by the computerized operator, Gus. Aboard the train, they find that an elderly woman, Mrs. Pitt, had recently died, claiming that she was attacked by a mummy that no one else could see. They retire to separate cabins for the evening, where Clara calls Danny in her present and gets advice how to properly end her relationship with the Doctor. She later encounters Maisie, Mrs. Pitt's granddaughter, who is distraught over the death and frustrated with the inability to see her body. The two get trapped in the luggage car, where a mummy's sarcophagus sits, and the two talk and bond while waiting for help. Meanwhile, the Doctor, claiming he is a mystery shopper, starts to investigate the murder with the help of the train's engineer Perkins who is also curious about the death as well as the nature of the train. The Doctor speaks to Professor Moorhouse to talk about the myth of the Foretold, a supernatural being who claims its victim 66 seconds after the lights flicker, which they are able to confirm when the train's chef dies in a similar manner as Mrs. Pitt. The Doctor discovers Clara's situation but when he tries to rescue her, the lights flicker and the sarcophagus opens; before he can save her, Captain Quell and his men arrest him for falsifying his credentials. When the 66 seconds are up, they find that one of the Captain's men has died. The Captain, realizing the Doctor was right, releases him. The Doctor begins to question what is really happening on the train, recognizing that most of the passengers are scientific experts and demands to know why. The train suddenly stops in space, and the illusion of the original Orient Express and several of the passengers disperses, revealing they are in a laboratory. Gus tells them they are now to study the attacks of the force behind the attacks so that they can reverse engineer whatever power it has; Professor Moorhouse soon is the next victim, and he stammers out a few details of the Foretold before he dies. The Doctor contacts Clara, who has discovered that the sarcophagus is meant as a containment unit for whatever the force is, and that this is not the first attempt by whomever is controlling events to discover the nature of the force, having gone through and lost ships and crews previously, in some cases, purposely killing them due to poor performance. Gus forces the Doctor to end the call and return to work when it expels the air from the kitchen car, killing the kitchen staff and threatening to kill more. The Doctor and Perkins discover that the past victims were all suffering from various medical conditions and the Foretold is targeting the weakest. Captain Quell reveals he suffers from wartime post-traumatic stress disorder and soon sees the mummy; providing enough information to the others before he dies. The Doctor and Perkins identify that Foretold drains the victim's energy through phase shifting, a process that takes just over a minute to complete. Perkins identifies the next likely victim to be Maisie, due to her trauma over losing her grandmother, and the Doctor tells Clara to bring her to the lab, having Gus unlock the storage door. On the way there, Clara sees that the TARDIS is protected by a force field, and when she talks to the Doctor about this, she realizes that Gus must know about the Doctor and his Time Lord nature to create the field. The Doctor is forced to admit that Gus had been trying to bring him here to help for some time, and Clara accuses the Doctor of taking her into a dangerous situation again. At this point, Maisie sees the Foretold, and the Doctor absorbs some of her memories as to be able to trick the mummy into thinking he is the intended victim. Within the 66 seconds, the Doctor is able to realize the Foretold is a former soldier from a war thousands of centuries ago, having been modified with phase-shifting camouflage to be an assassin. The Doctor offers their surrender to the Foretold, halting its attack and appearing before everyone before saluting the Doctor and then disintegrates into dust with only its phase-shifting device remaining. Gus congratulates the passengers on their success and then begins to evacuate all the air aboard the train, their services no longer necessary. The Doctor takes the device and rewires it as a short-range teleporter, rescuing all the remaining passengers on the train to his TARDIS before the train blows up when the Doctor made an attempt to hack Gus to find out who is behind all of this. On a nearby planet, regaining consciousness while told what occurred, Clara has a brief discussion on the nature of her relationship to the Doctor. On the TARDIS, the Doctor offers Perkins a job to maintain the time machine, but he politely refuses. Clara takes a call from Danny, who is expecting that she will finally end her trips with the Doctor, but when she ends the call, has reconsidered her earlier decision and wants to continue her travels with the Doctor. Continuity[edit] The question "Are you my mummy?" is a reference to the Ninth Doctor episodes "The Empty Child"/"The Doctor Dances". The Tenth Doctor repeats the question in "The Poison Sky".[1] The Doctor confesses to Clara that the mysterious force which enticed him to the Orient Express "even phoned the TARDIS once", recalling the last line from "The Big Bang", when the Eleventh Doctor, answering the TARDIS phone, replies "an Egyptian goddess loose on the Orient Express, in space?"[1] The Twelfth Doctor is shown offering jelly babies to Professor Moorhouse, a tradition associated with past Doctors, particularly Tom Baker's Fourth Doctor.[1] Danny Pink reminds Clara that the Doctor is "not your boyfriend." This is what the Doctor himself tells her at the end of "Deep Breath".[2] Production[edit] Filming[edit] The read through for Mummy on the Orient Express took place on 1 May 2014. Shooting started on 20 May and finished on 10 June. The episode was primarily studio-based in filming, however the scene with the Doctor and Clara on the planet was shot in Limpert Bay in the Vale of Glamorgan.[1] Casting[edit] Christopher Villers previously appeared in the classic serial The King's Demons, and Janet Henfrey previously appeared in The Curse of Fenric. Frank Skinner considers himself a die-hard Who fan, and previously had appeared in the special The Five(ish) Doctors Reboot.[1] Broadcast and reception[edit] Overnight ratings show that this episode was seen by 5.08 million, a 22.1% share of the available audience and third for the night.[3] Critical reception[edit] "Mummy on the Orient Express" received very positive reviews. Guardian columnist Dan Martin was positive towards the episode and praised the Mummy, saying, "At last, a proper new scary monster to get us behind the sofa," something he felt had been lacking so far in the current series. He called it "a triumph of production design matched with imagination," and praised first time writer for the show Jamie Matheson for blending "cool monsters" and "awkward Tardis dynamics." He did however feel that the reveal of the monster's true nature was "underwhelming."[4] Ben Lawrence of The Telegraph was positive toward the episode and awarded it four stars out of five. He praised the style of the episode and its ability to make the viewer a part of it: "as a viewer you felt hemmed in by the train's narrow corridors, stalked by an invisible creature that could strike at any moment." He believed that Skinner "started well," but more impressive was David Bamber, describing his performance as "poignant," and praised the development of the relationship between the Doctor and Clara.[5] Morgan Jeffrey of Digital Spy praised the episode, giving it four stars out of five. He praised the chemistry of the two leads: "Capaldi and Coleman remain an utterly magnetic coupling on-screen," citing the final Tardis scene and the beach scene as "magic." He felt that the main problem of the episode was the decision to keep the two apart. He was positive towards Frank Skinner's "genuine love for Doctor Who", which meant he was "practically beaming throughout," and called him "an endearing replacement" for Clara in the episode. He thought that the episode, like the previous one, had a Hinchcliffe vibe to, and that "'Mummy' is a joy, with excellent production design and a roster of perfectly-pitched performances all adding up to create an enchanting atmosphere," and believed it had a "wonderful mood," which felt like "vintage Doctor Who."[6] Tim Liew, writing for Metro, was positive towards "Mummy", calling it "another strong standalone story. ... [The] period costumes helped create a distinctive look and feel, the mummified Foretold was well realised and the repeated use of the 66-second countdown clock injected a real sense of pace and jeopardy."[7] Neela Debnath of The Independent praised the guest stars, Foxes and Skinner, saying Skinner "acts his socks off." She remained critical of Clara, arguing that "her poorly conceived and written character fails to charm," despite praising Coleman's acting. Overall she felt that the episode was "a delightful outer-space romp."[8] Forbes gave a positive review. They praised the "fantastic core principle" to the plot. However, they were disappointed with the run time, believing it would've benefited from another five minutes, citing some areas that could've been explored further, particularly the escape from the train. They praised the cast and the lead, reflecting that "The Doctor infects Capaldi's performance. Drawing on his love for the series I could see the influences of many of the previous actors to take on the role," and praised the development of the Doctor and Clara's relationship. They called Mathieson's script "an impressive debut."[9] The A.V. Club also heavily praised the episode, awarding it another perfect "A" grade. They said, "When the time comes to write the final accounting of the 12th Doctor—and hopefully we won't need to do that for a little while yet—'Mummy On The Orient Express' will loom large. This episode is a triumph for Peter Capaldi." They added that it was "the latest superb episode in a strong season" and that "Peter Capaldi's performance is enough by itself to elevate this story to classic status, but Jamie Mathieson's script provides him excellent support".[10]

Seems like we just did this. After flying solo to Retro Con, Aaron is back together with Adam for another episode of Bad Wolf Radio. Con life. Aaron gives a little more detail about his time at Retro Con and talks about the upcoming New York Comic Con. No news is good news? Not much news to talk about this episode so we jump right into discussing the clips and info from "Kill the Moon" and other upcoming episodes. Poor Danny. We talk about the latest episode "The Caretaker" and the interesting interactions between the Doctor and Clara's boyfriend. Oh, and there was a planet killing robot too.
"I'm the new caretaker. John Smith... most people just call me the Doctor." Skilled exponent of the deep cover persona, the Doctor wields a broom and a non-sonic screwdriver in his new-found role as The Caretaker. Naturally, this makes life very difficult for the peripatetic Clara and her new (but already long-suffering) beau, Mr Danny Pink. A Skovox Blitzer is whizzing around disarming policemen and vandalising school property but the real fireworks happen in the TARDIS when Smith-Oswald-Pink triangle finally comes together and seemingly blows instantly apart. Danny gives Clara an ultimatum (surely flowers are more romantic?), Courtney defiles the time-space machine with her disruptive effluence, and Space Dad gets proprietorial over his impossible little princess. But does all this a decent Doctor Who episode make? Listen in to hear what Jim and Rob make of it all.
Chelsea and Zen clean up some spillage while spilling their guts about the latest - Danny Pink heavy - episode of Doctor Who. The Doctor is at his grumpiest and Chelsea and Zen are at their most confused.
MUTTER'S SPIRAL Podcast returns to discuss "The Caretaker", episode 6 of Series 8 (or Series 34) of Doctor Who, written by Gareth Roberts & Steven Moffat. It's the cataclysmic first meeting of the Doctor and Clara's new friend, Danny Pink, and Clara's in the middle. So, there's a LOT to talk about this week - we have an interesting discussion with 2 very different viewpoints on this episode, the behaviors involved, and how it struck us. It's the favorite episode of the series for one of us, and for the other, it was a journey from initial dislike to great enjoyment of the episode with some issues still. Plus, news and trivia! Please take care and listen! ;-)
As Season 8 reaches the halfway point, we finally get what seems to be the long-awaited meeting of Danny Pink and The Doctor. Does it go as planned or as we imagined? We talk about that and we do it with a special guest, and fellow Whovian, Mandy Rosenberry!

#tindogpodcast #doctorwho notes from wiki "Into the Dalek" is the second episode of the of the British television programme , written by and , directed by , and first broadcast on 30 August 2014. Ford has written previously for the show, co-writing 's "". Starring and the episode also introduces as Danny Pink. It was watched by 5.2 million viewers in the UK on its initial transmission, according to unofficial overnight figures, taking a 24.7 per cent share of the entire TV audience and making it the second-highest rated programme of the evening. Contents [] Plot[] saves Journey Blue, a rebel fighter, from her space shuttle, which is under attack by , but is unable to save her brother, who has already perished. He returns her to the rebel space station, codenamedAristotle. He is greeted by Journey's uncle, Colonel Morgan Blue, who thanks the Doctor for saving his niece, but declares that he must be killed for fear he is a Dalek spy. However, Journey declares that, as he is a 'doctor', the Doctor can help their patient, which is revealed to be a war-torn Dalek they found floating through space who has appeared to have turned good. Meanwhile, , a veteran of the war in Afghanistan with emotional scars from his past, begins teaching Maths at Coal Hill School. In the staff room, Danny is introduced to, who invites him to a leaving do for one of their colleagues. Feeling awkward due to an obvious connection between them, Danny declines, but when Clara finds him in his classroom despairing over his actions, she invites him out for a drink. He agrees, and she returns to her office, where she comes face to face with the Doctor, who she has not seen since he left her three weeks ago when he went for coffee in Glasgow (as seen in ""). He tells her that he needs her help, and asks whether he is a good man. Clara replies that she does not know. They return to the Aristotle, where Colonel Blue details plans to miniaturize the Doctor, Clara, Journey and two rebel soldiers, Ross and Gretchen, so they can enter the broken Dalek, nicknamed Rusty, to see if they can determine what is making it good. Entering through the eyepiece, they begin exploring the upper part of the Dalek. Ross shoots a griphook into the floor, and the Dalek releases antibodies, much like in the human body, which incinerate him. The Doctor, Clara, Journey and Gretchen flee to Rusty's waste centre, where the Doctor correctly guesses that nothing will be guarded. From there, they head to an area of high radiation, with Rusty speaking to the Doctor on the beauty it had witnessed in the galaxy, including the creation of a star, and that the Daleks must be destroyed for wanting to destroy that beauty. At the Dalek's power center, the Doctor discovers a large crack, which he deduces is causing the malfunction within the Dalek. He uses his sonic screwdriver to seal the crack, fixing Rusty in the process. However, this causes it to return to its normal thinking pattern, losing the good within it. Colonel Blue and his men are helpless as the Dalek breaks its chains and begins exterminating the rebels, determined to aid the Dalek cause. It contacts the Dalek main ship, which releases more Daleks with the aim of destroying the rebel station. Inside Rusty, Clara convinces the Doctor to try to reawaken the good side of the Dalek. They split up, with Clara and Journey heading to reawaken memories of the Dalek's past now being suppressed, and the Doctor heading to the Dalek's consciousness. Gretchen sacrifices herself to set up another griphook to get Clara and Journey to the mind of Rusty, but is destroyed by antibodies. She awakens after her death in "Heaven" and is greeted by a mysterious woman named Missy, the same woman that greeted the Half-Face Man (""). Clara manages to awaken Rusty's memory of him seeing the creation of a star, while the Doctor manages to link his mind to Rusty's consciousness, reminding him of the destruction the Daleks caused. However, Rusty associates with the Doctor's own deeply-rooted hatred towards the Dalek race, and he exterminates his fellow Daleks as they attempt to destroy the rebel station. On leaving the inside of the Dalek, the Doctor parts with Rusty, upset that the Dalek saw only darkness within him and wishing for a 'victory' in creating a good Dalek. Rusty's response is that the Doctor himself is a good Dalek, while Rusty is not. The Doctor vows to continue with his mission to destroy the Daleks. The Doctor and Clara depart. Journey asks to come with them, but the Doctor declines, telling her that though she has a kind heart, he wishes that she hadn't been a soldier. The Doctor returns Clara to her office, moments after she left. Clara tells the Doctor that, although she is still unsure of whether he is a good man, she knows his intentions are well meant. On leaving, she bumps into Danny, who says he's glad that his being an ex-soldier hasn't put her off. Remembering the Doctor's treatment of Journey, Clara tells Danny that she is not so judgemental. Continuity[] The Doctor refers to his first encounter with the Daleks on in and his 's initial lack of altruism prior to meeting them. Rusty's assessment that the Doctor "is a good Dalek" echoes the lone Dalek's comment to the in "" that he "would make a good Dalek." The Doctor's loathing for the Daleks manifests in "", "", and "". In this episode, Shana and Daniel actually find a Moffat-era episode they quite like, although that seems to be partly through fulfillment of low expectations. Danny Pink is introduced through crying, Clara gets called a boy, and Peter Capaldi puts a shiver down Shana's spine. Also, some silliness about a Dalek. Show Notes: Main Topic: Into the Dalek. If you were cast as the Doctor what characteristics would you want your Doctor to have? "Into the Dalek" actually gives us hope for Series 8. Low standards. Daniel uses the word "sperminate." The story arc of Journey Blue. Blue and pink. Is there such a thing as a "good dalek?" On the nose writing and reused elements from previous episodes. Gendered expectations and Danny Pink. Crying over a meet cute. Referring to Clara as a boy. Pink still a cypher. Journey Blue a much more compelling character. Capaldi's movements are purposeful and his Doctor exudes stillness. Shana and Daniel are both fangirling for Capaldi. The Twelfth Doctor cuts through the bullshit. Daniel talks incoherently about House M.D. Shana wants to read a quote and Daniel steps over his own feet. "Am I a good man?" is the theme of Series 8 most likely. The one single good idea the Moffat era has produced thus far: the Mythic Doctor. Ripping off Star Trek. "Resistance is futile." Things ripped off from earlier episodes. Low expectations about the science content in modern Who. Attracted to the Scottish growl. "Into the Dalek" is one of the best episodes of the Moffat run. Daniel will punch Moffat in the face. Non-sexualized, non-objectified female characters. Defending Clara. Daniel name-drops the Verity podcast. So many silent villains in Moffat Who but here we have an individual speaking part. Sassy villains. Daniel forgets an episode title. Wrapping up with a brief discussion of Missy and the series-long arc. Spoiling the end of The Iron Giant. Next episode: "Robot of Sherwood." In this week's podKast (with a "K") Christian Cawley and James McLean guide you through the latest big stories in the Doctor Who world. We discuss Peter Capaldi's jumper - costume or warmth aid? - and also ask whether or not the rumours concerning his planned single year in the role are anything more than ill-advised conjecture. As we recorded the podKast, Samuel Anderson's casting as Danny Pink was announced, so listen out for a bit of discussion on that. We also turn our attention to the increasing noise concerning the omnirumour, specifically whether or not missing serial Marco Polo has been found, and Matt Smith recently recorded an awesome video for a poorly child. What a guy! Oh, and we also try to work out what is wrong with The Horns of Nimon. Someone has to.
