On this Mother's Day, we give thanks to God for the divine gift of motherhood in all its diverse forms. Mothering is a gift to our community providing regeneration, healing, hope and community building. We recognize this day can be complex and filled with grief, disappointment and loneliness. May God's Spirit be with each of you wherever you may find yourself this morning. A special thank you to all who celebrated and shared their time yesterday at the 4th Annual Mother's Day Weekend Event - where we celebrated mother's with free professional family photos and a meal from Carribean Kitchen Food Truck. A special shoutout to JSA for partnering with us to utilize their space and creating a community art project together! As we gather separate yet together in Spirit, I invite you to settle in, take a deep breathe as we pray together. This Prayer is written by Cole Arthur Riley, from their book Black Liturgies God our Mother, We thank you for grounding your character in the tenderness, protection and even sorrow of a mother. To know that no human experience - mother or child - is far from you gives us permission to uncover the particularities of how we were made to love and be loved. On this day, we're reminded that we do not begin with ourselves. Our beauty, our pain, do not exist in a vacuum but are tethered to those who've come before us. We pray for the mothers who have protected us, who are weary, who have stayed, who have left, who are grieving, who are proud- understanding that the story of what it means to be a mother is not singular. And as children, would you remind us that it is okay to lament the ways we have not been loved well, while also celebrating the miracle and mystery of those who loved us fiercely. We are made of more than us. Help us to behold it. Amen. And now may we pray this prayer of Blessing over all those who are mothering in all of its diverse forms written by Pastor Stephanie Gracious God, On this Mother's Day, we give thanks to God for the divine gift of motherhood in all its diverse forms. Bless the women who care for and nurture others by leading people and communities toward hope Loving God, look gently upon mothers of newborn and young children, give them energy, patience and gentleness in these fleeting days of sticky hands, messy houses and ever flowing laundry. Bless mothers who are raising school aged children and teenagers, give them peace and joy in parenting in moments that seem both hard and wonderful all at the same time Bless mothers who from afar watch and wonder about their adult children, give them perspective and wisdom as their children make choices. Bless those who are stepping in as a mother-figure in numerous ways to those around them. Bless those who have chosen not to be mother's and may feel shame or misunderstanding from our society. Healing God, comfort all those who mourn the absence of their mother today from death or illness or because of broken and challenging relationships. Comfort those who had hoped to be mothers, but have been unable to do so and those who continue to hope to become mothers. Ever present God, embrace and comfort those mothers who mourn over the loss of their own children. Gracious God, help us to recognize all the women who have guided us and loved us like mothers, shining forth as an example of the deepness of the love you offer to all people. Bless us and keep us today in that love and always. In your name we pray. Amen. See you next Sunday as we celebrate Graduating Seniors and Pentecost Sunday together as a community at the WHCC building. Your presence and encouragement is appreciated as we gather to pray for and honor the graduating seniors among us. Have a Happy mothers day and a great rest of your day!

Prayer is our means for communicating with God. In our Protestant evangelical tradition, most of our prayers are spontaneous, unwritten, and unrehearsed. This is wonderful and reflects the personal nature of our relationship with God. But sometimes, "borrowed prayers" can be helpful in naming things that perhaps we don't instinctively see or consider. It is no more or less sincere or effective than one that you make-up on the spot, as that is measure by the posture of your heart rather than authorship of the words. This Prayer of Confession that we offer today is a borrowed prayer. "Litany of Confession" from the Book of Common Prayer is often used as a corporate prayer during Ash Wednesday and the season of Lent. You may want to listen through one time, then listen again, pausing after each "Have mercy on us, Lord / We confess to you, Lord / Accept our repentance, Lord" to personally reflect and confess along these same lines. You can read along using the link below, as well as find some corresponding scripture to point you to the practice of Lent.

We can't wait for the external world to have peace before we take on the work of peace within us. This Prayer of St. Francis recognizes that effort of dropping our sword. We might not have started the fight, but we can be the bigger, stronger person by ending it not by winning, but by loving.

What is Prayer Simply stated it's asking Not a timid, begging for something like you don't deserve it - asking It's the asking that you do when you know your rights When you know the police, the lawyers and the judge You are entirely confident that what you're asking will be done. 1 John 5:14-15 AMP, Classic Edition says, “And this is the confidence ( the assurance, the privilege of boldness) which we have in Him: (we are sure) that if we ask anything (make any request) according to His will (in agreement with His plan), He listens to and hears us. And if (since) we (positively) know that He listens to us in whatever we ask, we also know (with settled and absolute knowledge) that we have (granted to us as our present possessions) the requests made of Him. You are humble and respectful, but you are very confident. Remember to pray like you Prayers can and will make a difference You are a co-laborer with God (1Cor. 3:9) You are working with God to determine the outcome of situations You are not a bystander with no power or authority. You are working with the One who created the wind, the moon, and the stars - that same God. Remember, God gave the lease for the earth to humans, and we have to ask Him into our situations. Just like we have to ask Him into our lives. Humans have free will- we get to decide, we have choices When you ask, He shows up When you don't pray – God doesn't work things out Prayer transports us from the natural everyday realm into the spirit realm. The spirit realm is the real place where all things originate. People are Spirits – the “real you”, your life force you have a soul (mind, will, and emotions)- that live in the brain And you have a body – where your spirit resides Your body is not the “real you”, it's the house you live in Prayer is the deepest and highest activity of the human spirit It's the highest form of power. Higher than money and position in organizations If you want Real Power - Develop a lifestyle of Prayer and watch the power you yield. Different Types of Prayer I will briefly talk about 3 types of Prayer – there are 5 other types Each Prayer type has different rules and laws that govern its function This is one of the main reasons people don't get answers to Prayer and become discouraged, angry or even bitter with God and stop praying. Prayer of Petition also known as the Prayer of Faith – Mark 11:23 This Prayer changes things It's based on the Word of God Don't ever say, “If it be your will” that's not part of the rules of praying in faith and it's not humility. The Prayer of petition is a process You start with your desire Find a scripture/promise that covers that desire You study that scripture/promise to get the revelation - it's understanding You meditate that scripture/promise until you believe it Then you pray and ask for it - after you believe it You use your words to speak the desire And then you receive it – the manifestation God is cool with you getting your wants and desires met. He tells you that in the Word. So don't be timid and scared to ask for what you want Prayer of Consecration – Luke 22:41-42 This is the Prayer where you say to God “Your will be done.” I want what You want God I lay down my wants and desires This is the Prayer you use when you are committing your life to God for Him to use you as He sees fit Again not what you want, but what He wants. Intercessory Prayer – 1 Timothy 2:1 You stand in the gap for a need that a person has in their life It's not used to change other peoples will, so they conform to your way of thinking or living When you intercede for others, you do it with a motive of love to make their life better Intercession moves demonic and satanic influences from around the person that you are praying for s...

Then I won't have any pain.” And God did what Jabez had asked.Four Prayer Requests That Come Out of This Prayer:#1 Blessing...over all we do for the Father#2 Influence...enlarge our territory#3 Presence...fill our lives and our house with your Spirit#4 Protection...cover us as we hunger for boldnessMatthew 28:19-20 ESV19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age."Acts 1:6-11 ESV6 So when they had come together, they asked him, "Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?" 7 He said to them, "It is not for you to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by his own authority. 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth." 9 And when he had said these things, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. 10 And while they were gazing into heaven as he went, behold, two men stood by them in white robes, 11 and said, "Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven."Psalms 2:7-8 ESV7 I will tell of the decree:The Lord said to me, "You are my Son;today I have begotten you. 8 Ask of me, and I will make the nations your heritage, and the ends of the earth your possession.Acts 4:1-31 ESV1 And as they were speaking to the people, the priests and the captain of the temple and the Sadducees came upon them, 2 greatly annoyed because they were teaching the people and proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection from the dead. 3 And they arrested them and put them in custody until the next day, for it was already evening. 4 But many of those who had heard the word believed, and the number of the men came to about five thousand. 5 On the next day their rulers and elders and scribes gathered together in Jerusalem, 6 with Annas the high priest and Caiaphas and John and Alexander, and all who were of the high-priestly family. 7 And when they had set them in the midst, they inquired, "By what power or by what name did you do this?" 8 Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, "Rulers of the people and elders, 9 if we are being examined today concerning a good deed done to a crippled man, by what means this man has been healed, 10 let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead—by him this man is standing before you well. 11 This Jesus is the stone that was rejected by you, the builders, which has become the cornerstone. 12 And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved." 13 Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated, common men, they were astonished. And they recognized that they had been with Jesus. 14 But seeing the man who was healed standing beside them, they had nothing to say in opposition. 15 But when they had commanded them to leave the council, they conferred with one another, 16 saying, "What shall we do with these men? For that a notable sign has been performed through them is evident to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and we cannot deny it. 17 But in order that it may spread no further among the people, let us warn them to speak no more to anyone in this name." 18 So they called them and charged them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus. 19 But Peter and John answered them, "Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you rather than to God, you must judge, 20 for we cannot but speak of what we have seen and heard." 21 And when they had further threatened them, they let them go, finding no way to punish them, because of the people, for all were praising God for what had happened. 22 For the man on whom this sign of healing was performed was more than forty years old. 23 When they were released, they went to their friends and reported what the chief priests and the elders had said to them. 24 And when they heard it, they lifted their voices together to God and said, "Sovereign Lord, who made the heaven and the earth and the sea and everything in them, 25 who through the mouth of our father David, your servant, said by the Holy Spirit, "'Why did the Gentiles rage, and the peoples plot in vain? 26 The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers were gathered together, against the Lord and against his Anointed'— 27 for truly in this city there were gathered together against your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, along with the Gentiles and the peoples of Israel, 28 to do whatever your hand and your plan had predestined to take place. 29 And now, Lord, look upon their threats and grant to your servants to continue to speak your word with all boldness, 30 while you stretch out your hand to heal, and signs and wonders are performed through the name of your holy servant Jesus." 31 And when they had prayed, the place in which they were gathered together was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and continued to speak the word of God with boldness.

This Prayer for Parents of students everywhere is very personal to me. I can hardly read it without becoming overwhelmed with my love for my own children. It is not meant to preach, but to teach parents that their children's growth and development is part of the plan. It will be especially relevant to anyone who has had a child go away to college.
