In this episode, the storyteller, Kathy Shimpock, will be reading Charles Dickens' masterpiece, A Christmas Carol. The work is a novella, first published in London by Chapman & Hall in 1843. Because of the story's length, it will be read over four episodes. This is chapter three (or what Dickens called Stave Three, The Second of the Three Spirits). In this story Scrooge will have a visit from "Christmas Present." He will visit the home of Bob Cratchit and his nephew Fred. You'll find a link in the credits to the tale, so you can read along. At the end of each reading, there will be questions for you to journal and reflect on. Although Dickens wrote A Christmas Carol long ago, this story is relevant for today.Story: A Christmas Carol: A Ghost Story of Christmas by Charles Dickens (1843). The Ghost of Christmas Past visits Scrooge and takes him back to his own childhood. He's reminded that he was shown kindness as a young man, and had even been in love, before his greed took over.
The Ghost of Christmas Present shows Scrooge how Christmas should be celebrated – with joy and giving, even when you are poor, like Scrooge's own kindly clerk Bob Cratchit.

Yorkshire couple Matthew Glover and Jane Land created Veganuary at their kitchen table. Inspired by Movember, their concept of challenging the nation to try veganism for a month gained incredible momentum via social media, and became a global organisation. But, along the way, it drained their finances, crashed their servers, and ate up their Christmasses... In this interview with Olly, the husband-and-wife entrepreneurs consider the flaws of their early strategy; take us behind-the-scenes of the iconic Greggs' Vegan Sausage Roll; and reveal how they've faced down criticism from within the vegan movement, the meat lobby and Piers Morgan… _____________ The health theme continues in the Zeitgeist, for which Ollie Peart investigates the trend for low and no alcohol wine and spirits. From miniature cordials by high-end ‘wine' brand Jukes, to a sparkling bottle of Muri's Sherbert Daydream, Ollie attempts to persuade us there's so much more to the zero-booze booze market than Beck's Blue and Shloer. But, armed with a trio of mixers from British start-up Three Spirits and a miniature bottle of orange juice from Pret, can he persuade Olly to give up his dirty martinis? _____________ Elsewhere, in the Foxhole, Alix Fox advises a listener whose teenage trans daughter has, she suspects, become intimate with her girlfriend - another trans girl she met at her boys' school. Stepping around the inevitable minefield this question might attract, Alix consults Dee Lou Whitnell, trans activist and founder of the #TransKidsDeserveToGrowUp campaign, to offer stellar advice on supporting this young couple - whilst steering them away from potential problems. _____________ For our record of the month, it's over to piano man Tom Odell, whose new song, Black Friday, comes from his new album of the same name. _____________ If you have a question you'd like to put to Alix, a trend you'd like Ollie to try, a Mannbassadorship request, or a letter for Olly to read out, just fill in the Feedback form on our website, https://modernmann.co.uk There you'll also find our Beer Money page where you can donate to the show AND HELP US CONTINUE TO MAKE IT. Thanks! … And we'll see you again on February 10th. _____________________ Presenter: Olly Mann. Contributors: Alix Fox, Ollie Peart, Matthew Glover, Jane Land, Tom Odell. Producer: Matt Hill. Are you familiar with Charles Dickens' 1843 book, Christmas Carol? It's an amazing story of salvation, transformation, redemption, and restoration? Even more, what can we learn from our past, present, and future?
The events surrounding Jesus' birth reveal three different attitudes about His coming. There's the spirit of apathy, the spirit of agitation, and the spirit of adoration. And we still see each of these spirits in people today. A closer look at each one helps us ascertain which spirit dominates our own lives.

In this episode, J.C. Rede dives back into Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol, focusing on Stave 3: The Second of the Three Spirits. Scrooge awakens to meet the Ghost of Christmas Present, who takes him on a journey to witness the joy and generosity of the holiday season. They visit the Cratchit family, where Scrooge sees the love and happiness despite their poverty. The spirit also shows Scrooge the suffering of the less fortunate, represented by two wretched children named Ignorance and Want. Scrooge is warned to beware of them and their fate. Through the masterful pen of Dickens, let us watch as Ebenezer Scrooge encounters the Ghost of Christmas Present, a spirit resplendent in its yuletide grandeur. Its robe, as green as the holly and ivy it champions, is edged with a fur as white as the freshly fallen snow outside Scrooge's darkened abode. This phantom of abundant warmth invites not only Scrooge but all of us to look upon its visage—and in so doing, to reflect upon our own capacity to embrace the season's goodwill and charity. We shall bear witness to a transformation as miraculous as it is timely. Scrooge's meagre quarters bloom with the lush foliage of Christmas itself, revealing a tableau of feasting that overflows with the promise of communal joy. A cornucopia, brought forth by the radiant torch of the Ghost, awaits—its unassuming brightness leaving no shadow untouched, no heart untouched. The journey on which Scrooge is taken is one not solely through London's cobbled streets now blanketed in winter's embrace, nor is it contained by the simple walls of the homes he is brought to visit. It is, in truth, a passage into the very souls of those he observes. With each stop, from the Cratchits' humble but hearty festivities, where the spirit of love is rich even when pockets are not, to the light-hearted celebrations of his own nephew, overflowing with mirth and merriment, Scrooge is offered a chance at redemption—a chance to see the world, and Christmas, anew.
Enter the unearthly visitor, the Ghost of Christmas Past, a luminous entity that defies the bounds of time and mortality. This spectral child, glowing with the innocence and wisdom of the ages, comes to guide our miserly Scrooge on a voyage that will stir the dormant waters of his memory, revealing hidden depths long thought lost beneath the surface of his frigid exterior.Together, they will journey through the snowy lanes of yesteryear, past the merry shouts of childhood friends, and into the bittersweet fragments of a life that might have been. The twinkling lights of Christmases past flicker across Scrooge's vision, illuminating the joyous festivities of old Fezziwig's ball, the tender exchanges with a love once cherished, and the echoing laughter of a family that could have been his own.
The Ghost of Christmas Present shows Scrooge how Christmas should be celebrated – with joy and giving, even when you are poor, like Scrooge's own kindly clerk Bob Cratchit.
The Ghost of Christmas Past visits Scrooge and takes him back to his own childhood. He's reminded that he was shown kindness as a young man, and had even been in love, before his greed took over.
In this episode, J. C. Rede introduces Stave II of Charles Dickens' classic tale, "A Christmas Carol." He discusses the immediate success and widespread popularity of the story, as well as Dickens' influence on Christmas traditions. The episode then dives into the second stave, where Scrooge is visited by the Ghost of Christmas Past. The ghost takes Scrooge on a journey through his childhood and early adulthood, showing him the joy and love he once experienced. Scrooge is confronted with the consequences of his greed and is forced to confront his own transformation. The stave ends with Scrooge pleading with the ghost to show him no more.
