Twenty years later, Gurinder Chadha's Bend It Like Beckham still kicks down barriers. Dive into the groundbreaking film that redefined cultural identity, gender roles, and the immigrant experience through soccer, samosas, and Sikh resilience. How did Jess Bhamra's fight to bend societal rules—from racist slurs on the pitch to rolling chapatis in the kitchen—mirror real-world struggles of second-gen immigrants? unpack the film's iconic moments: intercutting bhangra and soccer finals, confronting intergenerational trauma, and smashing stereotypes about “masculine” athletes. Why did Jess's father's tearful confession about his own racist past hit so hard? And how did Chadha's blend of humor and heart turn a sports story into a global anthem for self-determination? From its critique of gendered expectations to its legacy in today's conversations about multiculturalism, discover why Bend It Like Beckham remains a playbook for navigating identity in a divided world. Bend It Like Beckham analysis, cultural identity in film, gender roles in sports, immigrant family dynamics, sports movies and feminism.

Producer's note: When we prepped Jordan's new intro to this amazing interview from April of '22, I had jotted something down like, "who could have dreamed back then that he'd go on to win all the awards." Jordan rightly called this out, because (as she says here) she, and other critics, DID dream that. What I'd meant was: it seemed like one of those performances and films that you hope will be both lauded AND awarded, but you aren't holding your breath for the latter. How thrilling to be wrong sometimes.Watch Ke Huy Quan accept his Oscar for Best Supporting Actor.***As a kid, he was Short Round in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and Data in The Goonies. But as he got older, Ke Huy Quan began to feel that there wasn't really a place for him in front of the camera. After decades of telling himself he didn't miss acting, Crazy Rich Asians made a splash, and Ke began to think that maybe it was time to get back to acting. Ke opens up about all of that, and landing in the perfect threefold role of Waymond, Alpha Waymond, and CEO Waymond in Everything Everywhere All At Once. And then, Jordan has one quick thing about Bend it Like Beckham's 20th anniversary. With Jordan Crucchiola and Ke Huy Quan

Sean finally gets into the Halloween Spirit and reviews Dog Soldiers (2002), with Paul from SP Filmviewers. Paul is the artist of Review It Yourself's beautiful logo. Ellen E Jones and Mark Kermode celebrate 40 years of Film4 with a quartet of famous film-makers who have been part of its rich history and legacy. Founded in 1982, Film4 soon became an iconic and vital voice in British film. It has fostered a reputation for producing gritty, diverse stories from unheard voices as well as championing the more leftfield and experimental side of British cinema. Ellen looks at Film4's origins in conversation with Stephen Frears who directed the very first Film4 film, Walter. Walter stars Sir Ian McKellen as a young man with learning difficulties and the film documents his struggles in Margaret Thatcher's Britain. Frears continued to explore life in 80's Britain in the now iconic and still ground-breaking My Beautiful Laundrette. Stephen and Ellen discuss what the film meant at the time and why it remains relevant. Mark talks to Gurinder Chadha. In 1993 her Film4 produced debut, Bhaji on the Beach, became the first full-length feature film made by a British Asian Woman. Gurinder and Mark discuss the importance of Film4 in championing minorities and what the British film industry was like before and after Film4's emergence. Ellen chats with Ben Wheatley about Film4's response to his irreverent 2011 folk horror film Kill List as well as the multi-platform release of 2013's A Field in England. They talk about how Film4 has always made space for the more uncommercial and experimental side of British cinema. Finally, Mark talks to Clio Barnard about her 2013 Film4 debut, The Selfish Giant. A social realist adaptation of an Oscar Wilde story, Clio discusses how Film4 supported her as an artist and allowed her to share her unique and touching tale. This week's Viewing Note is courtesy of former Film4 head and veteran producer, Paul Webster. Producer: Hester Cant A Prospect Street production for BBC Radio 4

Seriously. Have you SEEN this movie? Listen in and see if you agree that this movie deserves an honorary spot in the lesbian film hall of fame. This episode was edited by Michelle. Logo by Micky. Today, I'm going to make a few people really happy because this is the Bruce Springsteen Niche Episode that more than a handful of you have been waiting for. The episode where I explain the long-lasting appeal of Bruce Springsteen as told through select Springsteen tracks arranged in order of progressive maturity of narrative voice. The journey takes us from frustrated youth in a small town, to emergent adult getting into trouble, an adult desire for love and reconciliation with the past, deepening radicalization as the hardships of life are revealed to be so often caused by oppressive systems of class and hierarchy, and finally a swell of hope and resilience as a more mature voice of elderhood emerges. Features 15 of his 60+ albums. I have created this playlist in Tidal but I'm going to add a list of each track and the specific album it appears on - because the specific recording matters. This is a musician who is known for tireless touring having played over 2,600 concerts since he signed with Columbia Records in 1972. But of course, he had a career before that - Bruce Springsteen has been the front man of a rock and roll band since his first gig as a 17 year old with his band called The Castiles in 1965 and he's never had any other job since. Never had a workin man job. Not a day. But his dad did. His dad had lots of jobs, it was hard for him to keep jobs. Partially because of declining industrial jobs around New Jersey intensifying in the mid-60s, but also because Bruce's dad struggled with alcoholism and undiagnosed depression and schizophrenia, and that became a defining feature of Bruce's life and his music, wrestling with intergenerational demons and the mirroring of one family's life in the larger decline of America as a country and an idea at the end of the 20th century. Gurinder Chadha doesn't make dance films or musicals – but with the slightest nudge, films like Bend It Like Beckham, Bride and Prejudice and Blinded by the Light could easily become full-blown song-and-dance spectaculars. On Why Dance Matters, Gurinder describes how dance formed her own British-Asian identity – from kathak classes to daytimers – and how she encourages her cast and crew to have a bop on set. And, speaking as the UK edges out of lockdown, she explains why live audiences are just as crucial in cinema as in dance. About Gurinder Chadha Gurinder Chadha is one of the UK's most proven and respected film directors and producers. Her award-winning films include Bhaji on the Beach, Bend It Like Beckham, Bride and Prejudice, Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging and Viceroy's House. Recently, Gurinder created Beecham House, an epic drama series set in India in 1795 (ITV and Masterpiece/PBS). Her films have received awards and nominations from, among others, the Golden Globes, BAFTA, European Film Academy, and the Writers Guild of America. When Gurinder Chadha set out to make a movie based on journalist Sarfraz Manzoor's memoir about the effect of Bruce Springsteen music on his life, she had one small problem. The movie couldn't work without Springsteen's songs. So when she and Manzoor snagged a moment with The Boss on a red carpet, they took their shot. Incredibly, it worked. Chadha and Manzoor tell the tale of their film ‘Blinded by the Light.'
